AS WITH MOST THINGS IN 2020, THE FASHION INDUSTRY HAS EXPERIENCED ITS OWN TWISTS AND PIVOTS. The typical fashion cycle that starts in September is more uncertain and unusual this season, and small and large brands are feeling it. The industry as a whole is rethinking the inefficiencies of its traditional system due to changes brought on by the pandemic, and it will take time for things to settle and for a new system to evolve. But evolve it must. Our cover feature, local couture designer Luly Yang, shares her thoughts on the pandemic and how she quickly adapted. Our photo shoot with Luly was her first

Luly shares with us how she was forced to slow down and think about her business in a new way. Read more on page 22. KIDS FAIR TO GO! In an ongoing effort to make up for the cancellation of the annual art fair, the Bellevue Art Museum celebrates this summer by offering kids the opportunity to bring the fair to their home! Using safe social distancing precautions, the BAM staff handed out a variety of over 6000+ free craft kits that were inspired by the Museum’s current exhibitions. Each craft kit included materials and instructions, as well as additional learning resources for adults to utilize in efforts to teach their children about art.

IF THE END OF THE RAINBOW HAD AN ADDRESS, IT WOULD NOT BE SURPRISING IF LEATRICE EISEMAN OF BAINBRIDGE ISLAND ANSWERED THE DOOR. As the Director of the Eiseman Center for Color Information and Training and the Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute, Lee Eiseman is in the business of color. Whether she is consulting about color trends for Lamborghini or branding for Leatherman, Eiseman spends her days immersed in the psychology of color and helping individuals and companies find the right color rational to express themselves at home or on the shelves of a store near you. A peek at Eiseman’s Instagram page offers a glimpse of life as a world-renown color expert. She posts inspiration images found in nature, art and architecture, travel, food and of course, fashion.

Bellevue Lifestyle | September 2020
When Bellevue Lifestyle was curious if Eiseman ever lives life in neutral she talked about her own fashion sensibility; yes she is often found wearing color, “It’s rare that I would be head to toe in neutrals. I like the excitement of picking out an outfit,” she says. But she also embraces neutrals accented with a pop of color in specially chosen accessories or jewelry. For her work as a consultant, she has areas of her home painted in a neutral backdrop that allows her to evaluate color in natural, northern light, an important consideration here in the Pacific Northwest. Yes, there are light boxes available to help isolate and evaluate color, but for Eiseman, her comfort level is “My eye, judging in northern light, but if a client has different light it must be judged in that environment.” But she is not dogmatic or bossy about color selections and her process is geared towards helping clients understand their personal feelings about color and to help them select the hues that make them most comfortable, “I have to be super objective for the client. I want them to feel like I am someone who listened…that this designer understood me.” When Eiseman works with clients at home or in business, she says her role as a color consultant is part therapist and part investigator, as she helps people unravel ‘WHY’ they react to color in a particular way. A CEO may initially nix a color choice known to provoke a positive reaction for a product group, and Lee will work to unravel the origin of that feeling, possibly an experience in childhood, and then work to help the client understand their bias and think about color in a new way. At the other end of the spectrum is the person who says they “don’t have an eye for color.” Eiseman insists every one has a perspective expressed in everyday ways such as setting a table. “Who doesn’t want to receive a compliment creatively, to have a license to have fun, to be like kids again… to get that first box of crayons.” When the Pantone Color of the Year debuted in 1999, no one anticipated the enduring popularity and influence the forecast would hold more than twenty years later. That first choice, Cerulean Blue, was selected on the cusp of the new millennium, a time of uncertainty and change, and fear of a virus, the Y2K bug. Here we are, more than Twenty years later, and the color of the year is Classic Blue. A choice that began the hike to color of the year in mid 2019, a choice that was not out of the blue, but instead was based on trend watching, cultural influences, the entertainment industry and more. Each Color of the Year is released with great fanfare and press coverage and will go on to play a major role in fashion, design and consumer goods, making one question which comes first, the color or the trend? Classic Blue was announced in December 2019, well be before the crush of a new virus changed our world. Yet the quote Pantone released for Classic Blue was a prescient glimpse at how the year 2020 continues to challenge us to grow and a testament to Eiseman’s trend forecasting talent: “We are living in a time that requires trust and faith. It is this kind of constancy and confidence that is expressed by PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue, a solid and dependable blue hue we can always rely on. Imbued with a deep resonance, Classic Blue provides an anchoring foundation. A boundless blue evocative of the vast and infinite evening sky, Classic Blue encourages us to look beyond the obvious to expand our thinking; challenging us to think more deeply, increase our perspective and open the flow of communication.”

DESIGNER, LULY YANG HAD TO SWIFTLY ADJUST TO NEW REGULATIONS AND CHANGES WITHIN THE INDUSTRY. ”We adapted and turned our business into a mask focused design studio,” said Yang. While many were losing work due to the virus, Yang and her team were working harder than ever. They donated their first batch of 20,000 medical masks to Providence Hospital and another 20,000 to Harbor View. Moving forward, they continue to provide as many local businesses that they personally know, with masks for their staff. “It was around the end of February that we recognized a need in our community for something that wasn’t available but necessary for daily protection, so we got to work.”

and demand, slow fashion and why her business is grounded in sustainability. “It has greatly disrupted the supply chain, the mills and the factories. One supports the other, and when one thing stops, everything else stops. If there is no demand for irresponsible fashion then it will go away.” Yang's approach with couture has always been about being thoughtful and green –how you shop, what you wear, who designed it, it’s all a part of being more intentional with your decisions not only as a designer but also as a consumer. She is happy to see a new introspective focus on slow fashion evolving within the industry. “Don’t produce what you don’t need, said Yang. Restraint in design takes skill and an artistic eye. Sometimes, less is more.” As a female, Asian business owner, Yang gave us a little insight on the importance of inclusivity and diversity in the workplace and how she has personally managed this over her 20 year career as a POC fashion designer. “You will always experience joy and hardship when running your own business. I am very fortunate that I can choose the people and environment that I surround myself with good intention. I love the Northwest for the diversity and cultural richness it has provided for my business. We have a very diverse group of individuals working for Luly Yang Couture and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Diversity brings together different perspectives and enriching experiences –it makes the world more colorful and beautiful like a painting.” To learn more about Luly Yang and her designs, visit her website at lulyyang.com or stop by her shop in the Fairmont Hotel in downtown Seattle.

VALERIE MADISON TAKES MODERN ELEGANCE AND DESIGNS PIECES THAT ARE AS UNIQUE AS YOU AND YOUR LOVED ONE. Whether you’re looking for an engagement ring or unique keepsake, craft a one of kind piece of jewelry you’ll cherish for years to come with Valerie Madison Fine Jewelry. We had the opportunity to chat with Valerie about what makes her pieces special. BL: HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR DESIGN STYLE? VM: Modern, minimal, and elegant are the words I would use to describe my work. Fresh and avant-garde, something that people haven’t seen everyday. Minimal and not overly designed are a cornerstone of my work, everything is intentional. Lastly, I want my pieces to feel timeless & enduring which is why I strive for perfection in every piece. 28
Bellevue Lifestyle | September 2020
ARTICLE SUSAN GEORGE BL: HAVE YOU ALWAYS HAD A PASSION FOR JEWELRY? VM: Yes, although I would say my passion for jewelry stems from my love of nature. My early memories on the school playground include me digging around in the rocks looking for the prettiest and most unique ones. I’m a nature girl at heart and my early career ambitions included paleontologist or wildlife biologist. I also loved to craft as a little girl and I remember my mom bringing me to the craft store and allowing me to pick out beads to bring home and do what I like with them. My family members couldn’t afford to be avid jewelry collectors when I was younger so I wasn’t particularly interested in jewelry until I was older and could pursue it on my own. BL: WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO ULTIMATELY MAKE THIS YOUR CAREER? VM: I went to college locally at the University of Washington to study Environmental Science. I started making jewelry as a hobby between my classes and on weekends to de-stress. I was hungry for information about the jewelry industry, always daydreaming about possibly pursuing it one day. In my research I learned about the gold mining industry in particular and it’s terrible effects on the earth, as well as its habitats and communities. I realized I could apply environmental responsibility into jewelry making. After college I continued making jewelry as a hobby and then I made the leap to become a full time designer and business owner in 2014. Ever since my first few attempts at making jewelry and holding a torch I saw that I had a knack for it and I knew that my passion could take me far. I wanted this career because I wanted to be my own boss and be able to do something really well and create beautiful inspirational jewelry. Today I have the pleasure of designing one-of-a-kind diamond rings, working with clients around the country on custom engagement rings, and developing a collection of modern, minimal fine jewelry.

BL: WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT MAKING CUSTOM JEWELRY? VM: It’s been amazing to work with so many couples near and far. Being able to tell a client’s story by creating their dream ring has been such a truly rewarding experience. What I love most is knowing that I’m helping create an integral part of their love story that will be passed down for generations. BL: WHERE DO YOU FIND YOUR INSPIRATION? VM: I’m very inspired by clean, minimalist lines and design that has structure, balance, and elegance. I’ve not yet been able to pinpoint a single source that I draw inspiration from specifically because so far, it has all come from within. In the photo you can see an array of styles using uniquely shaped and colored diamonds. Each of these rings is one of a kind meaning that while we can attempt to recreate a ring with something similar we’ll never be able to make an exact copy. This is something that is so important to couples today who want something unique to represent their commitment. All of these rings are low-profile, minimal, and have a refined elegance that

Growing up in his father’s watch shop, Bozhko loved absorbing knowledge of watch mechanisms and aesthetics. “Taking inspiration from my father, I decided I can continue the business of ‘timepieces’ by applying my creativity to what I had learned.” In 2014 HODINA was born with the simple motto “own the hour”. In other words: this life is given to you once, spend it wisely. Bozhko is inspired by mid-century architecture, interior design, minimalism, God, nature and people. “Minimalism applies to how I do life. To limit distraction and focus on what ‘I believe’ matters: God. It also translates into how I see the world and eventually into my product design. As you might guess, my strengths are belief, focus and execution. They make for an interesting combo.” We live in a world inundated with technology, consumerism and media. As this world advances, Bozhko believes it’s important we adapt this idea of minimalism into our lives in some way. “It’s freeing and good for the soul. It’s what I’m passionate about now more than ever.” Website: www.hodina.co | Instagram: @hodina.co @bozh___ 32

Fauzia Davis is the sole owner and founder of Lamain Beauty. Lamain is a cruelty free makeup brand built on inclusivity, diversity and nontoxic products, with all products proudly made in USA. Over the last few years, Davis has been learning and educating herself about beauty and skincare, and became inspired to make change in the industry and advocate for all shades of beauty. “When I created Lamain Beauty, I was thinking

beyond just someone’s skin color, but inclusive of all the human race. Everyone is beautiful and deserves to be celebrated!” says Davis. Lamain Beauty is formulated to enhance beauty of all complexions by setting new standards to help women see and let their true beauty shine. Lamain’s primary goal is to satisfy the unique demands of all women and men, and remain true to their slogan that all their products are “THOUGHTFULLY MADE WITH YOU IN MIND”. Davis began her journey in the beauty industry as a freelance and published model, and became frustrated with the beauty industry. “I hated the idea that all women should look the same and how makeup artists had to mix three different shades to get my skin tone, but only to get it wrong! So, I decided that instead of complaining about it, that I would create a solution.” Davis stays inspired by creating her non-toxic products with purpose, inclusivity and diversity. “I feel like I’m part of a continuum of women who for centuries used whatever they had to create with a purpose. The fusion of creativity delights me!” Website: www.lamaibeauty.com Instagram: @Lamainbeauty

Galina Adzhigirey started sketching brides in wedding dresses when she was a toddler. She absolutely loves drawing beautiful gowns and dresses, and became inspired by two sisters from Australia, Megan and Kerrie Hess (@meganhess_official and @kerriehessillustration). “When I discovered them, I got so excited that they could do such fun art for a living, that I decided to channel that into starting my own thing!” Galina thinks that people are incredibly amazing and she loves sketching her interpretation of them in a glamorous way. Her art is fun, cheerful and fashionable, and fashion brands have taken notice - she has worked with David Yurman, Salvatore Ferragamo, Neiman Marcus, Kendra Scott, Nordstrom, Seattle Bride, The Bellevue Collection, JCrew, and more. Galina also does live illustrations at fashion events, which is highly engaging for guests, and a fun piece of memorabilia for them to take home. “I started illustrating at events with watercolors, but since that took a while to dry off I transitioned into using markers, which are also more entertaining to watch. When I have extra time I’ll do some acrylic paintings, and lately it’s been more digital art on the Procreate App on the iPad.” Aside from being an illustrator, Galina is also a teacher, author, wife and mom. She enjoys traveling around the world with her husband and can’t wait to start traveling again. She home-schools her two daughters, which allows them to do a lot of drawing, crafts, baking, reading and taking walks. Website: DrawingBlueberry.com Instagram: @DrawingBlueberry

VITAMIN A IS ESSENTIAL TO PROTECTING THE CORNEAS OF OUR EYES. By taking care of your corneas, you can extend the health of your eyesight and reduce vision loss with age. An easy way to remember what to eat for healthy eyes is to look for orange foods. Carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, and butternut squash are all high in vitamin A.

Did you know that vitamin A is also imperative for skin health? So while you’re caring for your corneas, you’re also boosting your outer glow. If you want to kick it up a notch, be intentional about eating plenty of foods with omega-3 fatty acids to reduce acne and inflammation and help your skin produce its own collagen. For your healthy fats, go for flax seed, walnuts, chia seeds, and fish.

For soft, flowing tresses, make sure you’re getting an equal amount of B vitamins in your diet. We naturally get plenty of B-6 because it’s in most grains, but it’s easier to end up with a biotin or B-12 deficiency if you don’t pay attention. Focus on foods like salmon, eggs, spinach, and broccoli for a healthy balance of B vitamins for your hair.
