ROSEMARY ALLISON

NAMED WOMAN OF THE YEAR 2020 BY ASSEMBLYMEMBER JACQUI IRWIN

The annual Woman of the Year celebration is sponsored every year by the California Legislative Women’s Caucus as part of the Women’s History Month

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 21, 2020 CONTACT: Karie Portillo (805) 312-8445 or karie.portillo@asm.ca.gov

Santa Rosa Valley Resident named Assembly District 44 Woman of the Year SACRAMENTO – Every year, the California Legislative Women’s Caucus sponsors the annual “Woman of the Year” celebration as part of Women’s History Month. This year, Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin (D-Thousand Oaks) named Santa Rosa Valley resident, Rosemary Allsion, as her 2020 Woman of the Year. “It is a great joy to honor powerful women that are pillars of our community every year,” said Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin. “Rosemary’s life-long dedication to bringing people together for the greater good has made her an incredible leader in our community. Known for her philanthropy and her business acumen, year after year she has worked to raise funds for the American Cancer Society, Y.M.C.A. and For The Troops; that’s why I’m proud to honor her as the 2020 Woman of the Year.” Rosemary serves as an elected member of the Santa Rosa Valley Municipal Advisory Council, which has overseen the development of a local equestrian and hiking park, supported the installation of traffic lights and provided emergency housing for animals during wildfires. Long known for her interest in public safety, she has also helped to establish the Santa Rosa Valley Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) that links the community with information on fire updates, mountain lion sightings, and local crimes. She currently serves on the Board of For The Troops, a nonprofit that ships 2,000 “We Care” packages to deployed servicemembers each month. For the last three years, she has also chaired the annual gala at The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library to raise funds to mitigate the $30,000 monthly postage. Additionally, Rosemary is a successful businesswoman, recognized by the Wall Street Journal as one of the Top 250 realtors in the United States. Due to the unprecedented spread of COVID-19, the Woman of the Year luncheon and celebration that had been scheduled to take place on March 23rd in Sacramento have been cancelled. Nevertheless, Rosemary will be celebrated locally on a later date. Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin represents California’s 44th Assembly District, which includes the communities of Camarillo, Lake Sherwood, Moorpark, Oak Park, Oxnard, Port Hueneme, Santa Rosa Valley, Thousand Oaks, and Westlake Village.

THINKING ABOUT SELLING YOUR HOME IN 2020? Rosemary can give you advice on improvements that will highlight your home’s strengths, downplay its weakness and appeal to the greatest possible pool of prospective buyers. Although the structure itself is often the deciding factor, many steps must be taken to enhance your home’s features and increase the likelihood of it selling faster.

I am flattered to receive this honor and be placed in such distinguished ranks as those of the past honorees. These women exemplify courage, dedication and a determination to build a better quality of life for our community, helping future generations face the challenges that are put in front of them. I am honored to be working alongside some of the most passionate community advocates and change-makers in California without which none of my goals could have been accomplished.

VENTURA COUNTY COMMUNITY F O U N DAT I O N D E V E L O P S C OV I D - 1 9 R A P I D R E S P O N S E F U N D THE VENTURA COUNTY COMMUNITY FOUNDATION (VCCF) HAS CREATED THE VENTURA COUNTY RAPID RESPONSE FUND TO HELP ALL AFFECTED INDIVIDUALS, FAMILIES, NONPROFITS AND SMALL BUSINESSES DUE TO COVID-19. VCCF began the fund on March 13 and estimated that $25 million would need be raised to support the community. “There is an abundance of need,” says Vanessa Bechtel, president and CEO of VCCF. “Every dollar makes a difference. If we all pitch in, we can help our neighbors.” VCCF has partnered with the County of Ventura, Amgen Foundation, Southeast Ventura County YMCA, Give An Hour and the Economic Development Collaborative (EDC) to support these efforts, along with securing personal protective equipment (PPE) for doctors, emergency responders and others on the front lines. Other essential items include baby monitors and iPads to communicate with family and friends for those stuck in isolation. “It’s really critical that those on the front line have PPE; it’s like a war zone out there,” says Bechtel. “We are negotiating the purchasing of certain equipment on behalf of our community.” Individuals and families living in Ventura County making less than $50,000 can apply for direct financial assistance distributed by Southeast Ventura County YMCA to help with food and housing support, childcare, wage replacement, mental health care and other needs. Bechtel says she has heard stories such as a mother being laid off from work having to take care of her sick child with cancer and wondering how she would be able to pay the medical bills. “Their stories are heartbreaking,” says Bechtel. Bechtel says hundreds of individual and family applications have been submitted and money is being distributed in rounds, with the first round being $120,000 by April 10. As of early May, over $1 million has been distributed to help the community. Applications can be submitted through the form on the VCCF website, RapidResponseVC.org. “We have more applicants than funding,” says Bechtel. “We are trying to get funding out as rapidly as possible.” 18

“ There is an abundance of need... Every dollar makes a difference. If we all pitch in, we can help o u r n e i g h b o r s .” VCCF has also partnered with 805 Undocufund for undocumented service workers to receive individual assistance. Bechtel says more than 1,700 families applied within the first 24 hours. VCCF is also working in partnership with Future Leaders of America, Central Coast Alliance United for a Sustainable Economy, Mixteco Indigena Community Organizing Project and The McCune Foundation to assist these types of individuals. “We need to raise millions of dollars for this,” says Bechtel. The Rapid Response Fund will also help nonprofits with unrestricted and general/charitable needs affiliated with the COVID-19 response. Money will also be distributed in rounds. Bechtel used FOOD Share, which delivers food every month to 76,000 people in the county and began using mobile pantries to deliver food, as an example. “(In one day) the mobile pantries almost ran out within an hour,” says Bechtel. “The need is extensive and it requires a rework of logistics. So many food pantries are closed and Arc of Ventura County receiving a donation of 27 boxes.

they need the flexibility to buy food and supplies.” Bechtel used another example of caretakers unable to show up to work to bring items to senior citizens in isolation. “These organizations need unrestricted support to deal with new need,” says Bechtel. “There are more bar-

Small businesses needing resources and funding can also apply. The VCCF board recently approved a $125,000 challenge grant to help Women’s Economic Ventures provide businesses with low- and no-interest loans. Bechtel says with the EDC partnership, the nonprofit had more than 1,000 small businesses reaching out for help within the first week. “(On average) they work with 900 or more per year,” says Bechtel. “They need capital to get to these slow businesses. It’s about getting bridge funding so that they have the tools to continue to operate.” Applications for small businesses will be ongoing. Small business owners seeking assistance should schedule an appointment through the EDC website. “We have to stay committed and open,” says Bechtel. “By giving, volunteering and helping to spread the word by taking small action, we can maintain a resilient community.” For more information, to donate or to fill out an application, visit VCCF.org. 20

The Agoura Hills holistic healing center offers teas, nutritional guidance, herbal remedies and a full range of body, mind and spiritual therapies all in one location. “From the outside, people walk by and don't seem to understand what we offer,” says Deanna. “Others come in and think we are a ‘spa’ because we offer massages and facials. Some only see the tea bar and lounge and have no idea there is 2,500 sq ft of rooms behind the door to the Healing Sanctuary.” Offering an array of holistic therapies, the team at FOY Life helps individuals design a wellness program tailored to address their specific needs. By bringing the most effective healing options and educational opportunities together in one convenient place, FOY Life provides a space for comprehensive coordinated care in a community of healers who work together to focus on every client’s specific needs. “We'll help you design the best path toward optimal well-being, recommend the right-fit holistic therapies and remedies and help you manage the Health and Wellness journey you've always wanted,” says Deanna, adding, “The FOY Life team will monitor your progress

and stay with you throughout your entire wellness journey so you can skyrocket to optimal health and wellness faster and stay there forever.” In addition to the Yoga studio that doubles as a Meditation Sanctuary, FOY Life offers therapies that are new and unique to many, such as sound baths and energy healing. “When customers are asked if they have ever experienced a sound bath, most respond with ‘What is a sound bath?’” laughs Deanna. “Energy Healing is the most unknown, unsung therapy that if I had to give my healing an order of ranking by service (including both Western and Eastern), Energy Healing would be at the top of the list.” Currently closed due to CV-19 requirements, FOY Life’s studio has a very warm feeling and the space is meant to be used for gatherings and healings of all kinds. The entire space is available to rent to transform it into “anything you can dream it to be,” adds Deanna. “We aren't like anything else you have ever experienced in the Conejo Valley, so why not take a chance and stop by and see us?” encourages Deanna. “Up until the COVID-19

Elective surgeries have also been postponed to create the capacity. “We have the bed capacity, staffing, supplies and equipment we need at this time,” says Dr. Suski. “We continue to plan daily by accessing the resources and best practices to ensure we remain able to meet the needs of the communities we serve as the situation continues to evolve.” In terms of personal protective equipment (PPE) and ventilator supply, Dr. Suski says the supply at Los Robles remains intact. WITH KIDS DURING COVID-19

AS COVID-19 SWEEPS THE PLANET AND COUNTRY AND SHELTER IN PLACE ORDERS AND PRECAUTIONS ARE TAKEN TO PROTECT OUR HEALTH, AMERICANS ARE TRYING TO ADJUST TO A NEW NORMAL. School and work closures have families staying home except for essential needs. Kids are already feeling stuck and miss their friends, activities and routines. Many parents, however, are learning how to work from home while juggling educating and caring for their kids. This new family dynamic, coupled with the anxiety and stress of what is happening in the world, may make it seem impossible to get anything done. The following tips can help you develop a routine and environment that works best for you and your family.

WORKING FROM HOME (CONTINUED)

Conejo Valley Lifestyle | June 2020

DESIGNATE A WORKSPACE Having a particular place in which you work can help set you up for success. If you are not used to working from home, creating a space that feels like going to a workplace can get you into a better routine and improve your focus. Try to create your workplace away from the main areas of your home and, if possible, with a door you can close. These tricks will also help remind your kids not to disturb you when you are in your workspace. Make your workspace as similar to the one at your job as possible. You can also play music or wear noise-cancelling headphones to reduce distractions if another adult or older child is there to care for the younger ones. Once you do arrive at your workspace, reset to adjust your mind from home life to work life. ASK FOR HELP This is not the time to try to do everything yourself. If you have a partner at home, take turns spending time with the kids so you can each have uninterrupted time to focus on work or time to yourself to recharge. If you are feeling overwhelmed or are struggling to get something done for work, talk to your boss or team about the situation before things become too difficult. Everyone is affected in some way by the COVID-19 outbreak and therefore, will likely understand. If you are struggling to balance work and being home with the kids, try talking to them at their level. Kids are more aware and understanding than we often realize. So an open conversation with them may help. BE FLEXIBLE No one knows how long this is going to last, and everything about sheltering in place is new. So realize it will take time to adjust. Even if a strategy works one day, it may not work the next. This is a difficult time for kids as well, who may not fully understand what is going on or be able to handle it emotionally. Unexpected things will come up in your work, with your kids or any other aspect of your life. So, try to build in some wiggle room because you will likely need to make changes as you go. For example, if the day is going really smoothly, perhaps work a little longer to accomplish a bit more in case things do not go smoothly on another day. STAY POSITIVE Focus on the positive aspects of being home with your kids, even while trying to work and adapt to this new and unusual situation. Remember, the circumstance is only temporary. Things will eventually get done, and everyone is trying their best to manage right now with their own set of challenges and obstacles. Try to balance work and quality time with your family while you are all stuck at home. The effort you make to do so can help your family bond and turn a tumultuous time into one filled with good memories. Kimberly Blaker is a freelance parenting writer. Add to that the fact that two large government shelters in Los Angeles recently closed, asking the public and animal rescues to take in the strays and unwanted animals.

“Bruce told me that if he didn’t continue to help, he would go crazy,” laughs Kim, noting that he protects himself by always wearing a mask and gloves. “I get a glimmer of hope every time I see Bruce sitting with the rescue dogs. One person can change the world by giving people hope,” she says. GROWING NEED Shelter Hope has experienced an increase in the number of daily calls from families needing assistance during these challenging times. “Food and vet care are at the top of the list, as many concerned residents are worried about being out of work and not sure how they can care for the maintenance of their pets,” says Kim. Additional concerns include those from senior citizens requesting help with walking their pets and getting groceries for themselves and food for their pets. “We are able to provide assistance and have been walking dogs for people, dropping off food and supplies and the occasional grocery store shopping too,” says Kim, adding “Our friends at Pet Food Express gave us an enormous discount on all that we purchase and load it into our cars for us.” Kim says Shelter Hope has experienced an increased interest from people wanting to adopt and foster because they have a lot of time on their hands, which she says presents additional challenges during these uncertain times. “Obviously, that is great news, but in trying to be safe and social distance, how do we make sure that we are placing this dog into a safer place than the one we proKINDNESS IN CRISIS

The Chinese symbol for crisis encompasses both danger and opportunity. What is the opportunity for us while dealing with the Coronavirus? 01 To practice relaxation or meditation techniques. Simply close your eyes and follow your breath with your mind as your breath comes in and goes out. Continue to let go as you practice. 02 To do things you did not have time for. Like read a book or paint a room, listen to music or communicate with friends or family. 03 To practice becoming the observer of your thoughts to access a healthy relaxed state of mind which puts you into your peaceful zone. 04 To find a way to be empathetic, positive and helpful toward others. 05 To get to know yourself in a deeper less anxious state. Being with yourself without distractions will bring up feelings below the surface. PARTING THOUGHTS ARTICLE KIM PAGANO

every stranger is just a friend you haven't met yet colleges closed, this will really be a time to remember. We all found ways to connect through Facetime and Zoom calls, and even an app called House Party. I made it a point to reach out to check in with several family members, friends and neighbors. I’ve been doing my radio show from home and continue to do so. Not really conducting business, just sharing the brighter side of life and celebrating the angels in our community that are making a difference. My salon closed right away and I was able to bring home my products for clients that needed a quick color done by someone in their own home. What a concept! I was giving tutorials to guide them to do their own color, and quite frankly, even the pickiest were not picky. Our construction company was able to carry on, classified as essential, since the work takes place in empty commercial buildings. In the beginning we had huge hopes of gutting our home and getting all of our projects done, but that quickly slipped away. What did happen is we relaxed, OVERNIGHT OUR WORLD HAS CHANGED DIRECTIONS,
