LIFESTYLE LETTER

JULY 2020 PUBLISHER

Nine Years of Community DEAR READERS, This is my 109th letter to you all, so I feel like we know each other rather well. That's right, July marks our 9th anniversary here at Northland Lifestyle Magazine, and I'm thrilled to continue finding stories that reflect our vibrant community. Life has changed since I took this job. I've had two children. I've survived a pandemic (I think). I've met hundreds of inspiring business owners, stellar students,

and passionate artists. I've found my favorite restaurants and independently owned shops. I've helped style models in a treehouse amid the heat of summer. And I've enjoyed nearly every second of it. I consider it a tremendous honor to be able to do what I do. Media is a challenging landscape right now, and it is ever-changing. I appreciate the commitment to hyper-local coverage that Jeron Traphagan, our publisher, brings to the table. It's great to have a partner that believes in our mission so strongly. In this issue, we are exploring yet another industry impacted by the pandemic--performances. We check in with the team at Trezo Mare as they pivot to bring their live music to guests at home, and explore a collaborative project that aims to raise money for musicians that need financial assistance. We also learn how to make our backyard parties feel as fun as a night out on the town.

PUBLISHER’S LETTER

Nine years and just the beginning THEY SAY TIME FLIES WHEN YOU'RE HAVING FUN - AND THAT REALLY IS TRUE! Northland Lifestyle has become a staple in the Northland for bringing good news, inspiring stories, and amazing businesses to mailboxes. I am proud and very fortunate to be part of its growth. Many of our partners have been with the publication since it started, and I would like to say thank you to them for their loyalty and support. Our parent company, Lifestyle Publications, is growing rapidly and we now have 90+ publications nationwide. It's very gratifying knowing it all started here in Kansas City. The Northland was one of the founding publications, creating a solid platform for growth. The last months have been challenging and unknown for all of us, but Northland Lifestyle took it to another level and focused on inspiring in a time of need. This is just one of many examples of how we have made our mark as a community-based publication. I would like to extend a big thank you and congratulations to our editor, Rachel. She has been with the publication from day one and truly is the backbone behind it all. This publication wouldn't be what it is without her expertise, and her talents are unmatched. She truly cares about the community and she ensures each story is placed on the right pedestal with each issue. Happy nine years, Northland Lifestyle. Thanks for letting us be your cheerleader. We can't wait for what's to come!

EDC AND FORD FUND GENERATES $50,000 FOR FEED NORTHLAND KIDS The Ford Motor Company Fund and the Clay County Economic Development Council recently combined forces to raise more than $50,000 to help fight hunger among Northland school children. The EDC event was both unusual and effective: a virtual happy hour that drew EDC members, supporters, and friends May 1 via a Zoom videoconference system. GIVING BACK

To g e t h e r A p a r t : KANSAS CITY MUSICIANS JOIN FORCES WHILE SHELTERING IN PLACE ARTICLE RACHEL C. MURPHY | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

MARCH 24, 2020. The city fell silent as stay-at-home orders swept across the Kansas City metro area. Restaurants closed, parks succumbed to police tape, and people everywhere looked at each other with suspicion, wondering if the unknown menace of COVID-19 was lurking in their seemingly healthy lungs. For many, that shutdown meant lost wages for a short time. For the music community, the effects are wearing on longer. The restaurants and bars that hired them to bring in guests are struggling under capacity limits and depleted cash reserves. Times are bleak. But it’s also in times like this that creators thrive, lighting the dark times with hope and healing. At least, that’s the goal for David George, the singer/ songwriter and driving force behind “When We All Come Together,” a song that he wrote and produced. As soon as the stay-at-home order was announced, George, known for his work with A Crooked Mile, and the Volker Brothers, as well as guest stints playing with John Fogerty, among others, started hatching an idea for an at-home musical collaboration to raise funds for the Midwest Music Foundation. The Midwest Music Foundation was created for these times of stress. For the last ten plus years, the MMF has been a lifeline for musicians in need of financial aid because of medical expenses. MMF was the vision of Abigail Henderson of The Gaslights. After receiving care CONTINUED >

INQUISITION, ACCORDING TO MONTY PYTHON. No one expected a city-wide shutdown this year either. For bars and restaurants, this loss of income has been devastating. The Monarch Bar, located on the Country Club Plaza, was about to welcome their sister bar, Verdigris, to Park Place in Leawood when everything came to a screeching halt. Luckily, both bars were able to pivot to a to-go cocktail format in order to survive and keep their staff employed. So what do you do when you’re stuck at home instead of making the finest cocktails in the city? Mix a drink! Brock Schulte, bar manager of the Monarch, and Stephen Montez, general manager of Verdigris, have been kind enough to share the cocktails they have been mixing at home while they wait to wow their guests once more. And to keep it even simpler, they chose two different cocktails that showcase one outstanding spirit, The Real McCoy 12 Year Single Blended Premium Rum. Enjoy!
