Letter from the Editor OUR SEPTEMBER ISSUE HIGHLIGHTS FASHION AND STYLE. While this tends to be a favorite theme of mine, I definitely felt a little out of touch with this year’s trends as I have spent the past several months sporting a lot of loungewear with the lifestyle changes with work and play during this time. I’m sure most of you can relate to the change in attire as many of us work from home and spend more time enjoying outdoor recreation. My children still wanted to do their traditional back-to-school shopping, but with school starting online, I see a lot of all-day pajamas and casualwear in our future. The cyclical nature of fashion trends are fun to watch as many of the cuts, washes and styles from decades past come back for the next generation to enjoy. From boho fashion (my favorite) that owes a nod to hippies of the ‘60s and ‘70s, or the midcentury modern clothing that emerged in the ‘60s as well, these looks can still be enjoyed to this day. Stonewashed, high-waisted jeans (please no), neon, legwarmers, blazers, and parachute pants of the ‘80s have made a resurgence, too. (I’m staying as far away from those mom jeans as I can regardless of their recent comeback. Some people can rock that look, but I am not one of them.) The ‘90s corduroy, plaid

to express ourselves. For this year’s fashion issue, our talented stylist, Amani Skalacki, found some of this season’s fashion finds from area Kansas City-owned boutiques. We just picked a few to showcase, but numerous locally owned boutiques around our city and surrounding area offer a great selection. Plus, it feels great to support and shop local. We could all use a lift right now, and new fashion gives us optimism and promise that another season awaits us that goes beyond bleach-stained sweatpants and disposable masks. Fashion isn’t frivolous when it signals hope that a brighter tomorrow is right around the corner.

behind the scenes as an executive to being behind the scenes as a creative. Now I can’t believe I get to be both. Q: DO YOU HAVE A SPECIAL PROCESS FOR WRITING A SONG? A: For me, it all starts with a word or phrase that catches my ear—it can be something I hear in conversation in a crowd or even a few words from a sentence in a book I’m reading. If a few words are enticing to me, I’ll make a note in my iPhone. I have hundreds of those compiled over the years, so when I walk into a writing session with an artist or other writers I toss those ideas out as conversation starters. Sometimes they turn into a song. Sometimes they turn into a conversation that turns into another idea. But that’s how it starts. Q: WHAT DOES THE PROCESS LOOK LIKE ONCE YOU HAVE A COMPLETED SONG? HOW DOES IT GET INTO THE HANDS OF SINGERS LIKE KEITH URBAN, KENNY CHESNEY AND MIRANDA LAMBERT? A: There are infinite ways songs can end up finding their way to an artist. A publisher might send it to another publisher who might send it to the label who sends it to management and then to the artist. Or sometimes it’s as simple as me texting an artist directly and saying, “Hey, I wanted you to hear this.” This part of our business is really still a mystery even to those of us who are in it. How songs find their way from the writing room onto the radio is honestly up to the universe. WE just have to trust the process and that in time if the music is good enough it will eventually find its way. I have had songs recorded by artists a week after they are written, and some as long as five years later. The key is to just wake up tomorrow and find a way to write another song. What happens after the song is finished is in some ways none of my business…even though it’s my livelihood. Q: DO YOU WRITE WITH A SPECIFIC ARTIST IN MIND? A: I write a lot WITH artists, so those days it’s obvious that we are aiming for what they want to write. Most days I just try to write the best idea that’s in the room. Q: ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON ANY NEW MUSIC? A: All three of the artists I’m working with are on their own unique creative timelines right now. Tiera is writing and planning on releasing her own music independently later this year. Hailey Whitters is very busy releasing a slew of new content and videos promoting The Dream, a record she released earlier this year. And Madison Kozak is quarantined in Canada co-writing and building up her catalog to build material for a project that hasn’t been started yet. It’s fun to see all three navigate 2020 in their way creatively. Q: DO YOU HAVE ANY FUTURE PLANS FOR YOUR BUSINESS? A: I have spent the last year building a roster of artists. Now, the focus is to build that roster’s success. The dream of Songs & Daughters for me is to work really hard so that these incredible artists get to win. That is going to be so gratifying. “When looking at designers it is a bit of a puzzle, and many parts have to work together to make the right fit. The quality and fit are key factors, but we truly look at our designers as partners in our business, and we collaborate with them to make brides’ dress dreams come to life. Right now we are seeing a range of style requests—there has been a huge push for the simple chic, but very sophisticated gowns. Girls are looking to wow guests with dramatic silhouettes, leaving lace and beading behind. We are also seeing lots of 3D floral applique—think of delicate pearls or petals popping on a veil or down a long train. This type of dramatic detail adds texture and unexpected visual interest. Either way, brides want the gowns to be memorable.” Bridal Extraordinaire is committed to exceeding expectations and going above and beyond for all brides. “Right now we are focusing on taking good care of brides through a difficult year. We are offering services for extended storage, cleaning for gowns being worn twice, off-the-rack options for those couples that decide to elope and virtual appointment options. We just want brides to know that we are here to help them and to celebrate them!” To book an appointment and join the BE family, visit bridalextraordinaire.com. 18

Does It Make Sense to Appeal?
Some divorce and family law matters do not settle. Instead, the case is tried in the family court. Putting the case in the hands of a family court judge can be a risky proposition. Most parties would prefer to settle outside of court, but it is not always possible. All it can take is one issue of disagreement for many parties to decide that they have no choice but to go to trial. After trial, the family court judge will issue a judgment. How this works can vary by jurisdiction and locality, but it can often take weeks or longer for a judge to render their judgment. It can take weeks because family court judges generally have to issue a written judgment that has findings of fact and conclusions of law. Some parties are happy with the results of the trial. Other parties are unhappy. In some cases, it can be a mixed bag. A party might like certain parts of the judgment and not like others. For parties who are unhappy with the results, the question for them is whether they should appeal the judgment. Appealing the ruling can prolong the litigation. It can result in more attor-
neys’ fees. But the question beyond that is whether an appeal will work. Laws vary by jurisdiction. Every case can also involve different intricacies. However, in a general sense, to succeed on an appeal, a party must generally show that the family court judge erred as a matter of law or that they abused their discretion. These terms can be somewhat complicated for many to understand. But to show the judge erred as a matter of law, this generally requires a showing that the judge did not abide by the statutes, rules or existing case law. Sometimes, this does happen, but it is not always easy to show. To show the judge abused their discretion is a bit more complicated. Within the confines of statutes, rule and existing case law, there is some grey area that family court judges can navigate based on the law. Take the standard in child custody cases that these matters are to be resolved based on the best interests of the child. To determine what is in the best interests of the child, a family court judge has to weigh the evidence. The family court judge also can believe and disbelieve witnesses. Showing a judge abused their discretion is not easy, but sometimes a party can prove it. To simplify how an appeal works,
think instant replay in football. With instant replay, the question is whether or not the referee got the call right based on the play itself and the rules the referee has to apply. An appeal works largely the same way. Parties do not get to redo the trial on appeal. Instead, the appellate court is to review the transcript and legal file. In doing that, the issue is whether the trial court erred based on the evidence presented at trial. For some parties, they might have a reasonable chance of succeeding on appeal. For others, it might be difficult. Nonetheless, for parties who are considering an appeal, there are deadlines that have to be followed or else a party can waive the right to appeal. Thus, it is always critical to speak to a lawyer immediately. Stange Law Firm, PC limits their practice to family law matters including divorce, child custody, child support, paternity, guardianship, adoption, mediation, collaborative law and other domestic relation matters. Stange Law Firm, PC gives clients 24/7 access to their case through a secured online case tracker found on the website. They also give their clients their cell phone numbers. FALLING IN LOVE. Brooke and Britt Dowd have experienced this feeling several times! First with each other, then with their two darling daughters, aged 2 and 3, then his parents’ farmhouse. “We moved to our forever farm in 2012 when Britt’s dad got a job opportunity in a different location. At that time, we were able to buy their 1965 brick farmhouse from them. With only a few bathrooms and bedrooms, it was fine for us, and we created lifelong memories in those newlywed stages, but as we grew our family, things started to get a little tight,” Brooke says. “After our second child, we met with Ridge Craft Custom Homes to get his thoughts on demolishing the entire house and starting over or keeping the existing foundation and re-framing it. After much planning and thought we decided it would be worth the expense to do a complete demolition. I am so happy we chose a fresh start for our growing family, and thankful God was working in our favor, and we did not have to sell the land to create our dream home.”

By taking care of your corneas, you can extend the health of your eyesight and reduce vision loss with age. An easy way to remember what to eat for healthy eyes is to look for orange foods. Carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, and butternut squash are all high in vitamin A.

H E A LT H Y SKIN Did you know that vitamin A is also imperative for skin health? So while you’re caring for your corneas, you’re also boosting your outer glow. If you want to kick it up a notch, be intentional about eating plenty of foods with omega-3 fatty acids to reduce acne and inflammation and help your skin produce its own collagen. For your healthy fats, go for flax seed, walnuts, chia seeds, and fish.

For soft, flowing tresses, make sure you’re getting an equal amount of B vitamins in your diet. We naturally get plenty of B-6 because it’s in most grains, but it’s easier to end up with a biotin or B-12 deficiency if you don’t pay attention. Focus on foods like salmon, eggs, spinach, and broccoli for a healthy balance of B vitamins for your hair.

WITH MASTER MIXOLOGISTS OF THE MONARCH BAR AND VERDIGRIS THE MONARCH BAR, LOCATED ON THE COUNTRY CLUB PLAZA, JUST WELCOMED ITS SISTER BAR, VERDIGRIS, TO PARK PLACE IN LEAWOOD. Brock Schulte, bar manager of the Monarch, and Stephen Montez, general manager of Verdigris, give us a taste of what they are drinking at home. And to keep it even simpler, they chose two different cocktails that showcase one outstanding spirit, The Real McCoy 12 Year Single Blended Premium Rum. Enjoy! Brock Schulte loves this iteration of the classic mojito, featured on the Monarch Bar’s Mojito Migration.
mojito
+ 1.5 ounces Real McCoy 12 year rum + .75 ounces fresh lime juice + .75 ounces mint syrup Whip shake all of the above with pebble ice, open strain into a Collins glass. Top with 1.5 ounces soda water and pack with more pebble ice. Garnish with 3-4 mint sprigs. Stephen Montez looks to the classic tiki pairing of rum and Velvet Falernum for a simple but tasty concoction.

+ 2 ounces The Real McCoy 12 year rum + .5 ounces Taylor's Velvet Falernum + 1 lime coin Combine liquids in your rocks glass with large ice cubes and stir until cold. Squeeze the lime coin over your cocktail to express the oils and a bit of juice. Drop into your glass and enjoy. 50
