Show dogs to rescues THIS FEBRUARY, TULSAN JULIE MUELLER AND HER PRIZE SALUKI, STEWART, TRAVELED TO NEW YORK CITY TO PARTICIPATE IN THE ANNUAL WESTMINSTER KENNEL CLUB DOG SHOW EARNING A BIG WIN AS BEST OF BREED. tlemen who met regularly in the bar of a Manhattan hotel to trade stories about their shooting accomplishments and the talents of their dogs. Today the dog show evaluates 205 breeds, and holds agility and obedience championships. I learned the club also gives millions in charitable donations supporting breed rescue organizations and companion animal disaster relief. As the mom of two rescued Cavalier King Charles spaniels, I am passionate about matching animals with loving owners. The Westminster Gives Back Award assists with rescue expenses, vet care, feeding and grooming. Just this year, club recipients include American Belgian Malinois Club/American Belgian Malinois Rescue Trust, American Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Rescue Trust and Italian Greyhound Club of America.

VISION CHECK? CHECK. Did you know that 80 percent of a child’s learning is visual and more than 25 percent of children have vision problems? Before school starts, add checking your child’s vision to the list of must-dos. The American Optometric Association recommends that children have a first eye exam at six months of age and checked again once a year, as some eye conditions are hidden and annual comprehensive exams catch what screenings cannot. Adventure Vision is now a part of Pediatric Dental Group located on South Utica Avenue in Tulsa. Children can now have their teeth and vision checked the same day. Think carefully about the proposed terms of a divorce settlement The process of divorcing is often complex and difficult. There are a few things that make this even more challenging. Having numerous assets or having an ex who is not willing to work to come to mutually agreeable terms are two of these. Individuals might not want to think about having to battle things out in court, but it may be necessary if the settlement negotiations are not successful. Negotiating the terms of the divorce requires that both parties in the matter be willing to compromise. In most cases, neither party is going to get everything they want. Being able to think clearly about how various arrangements impact them may help as they evaluate the
potential options. It is usually best to think about what aspects of the end of the marriage they want to focus. For example, they might not care about what happens to the marital home, but they may want to keep their special art collection. In these cases, a strategy can be worked out that increases the chance of that happening. Determining what is truly important to them can also help them to save their energy for those matters. Parties should think about the long-term implications of the settlement. This includes taking a look at how the arrangements will affect their finances in the future. Assets that are costly to keep up might not be ideal when they are trying to survive solely on their own income. Therefore, it is important
to evaluate the possible settlement options to ensure they make informed decisions. Westminster is the second longest running sporting event in the United States. People come from all over the world to see the dogs. It is a two-day “benched” dog show where dogs are required to stay at their bench all day so the public can view the competitors. Security is extremely high and is nationally televised which adds to the pressure. Stewart won Best of Breed at Westminster and is currently the number one Saluki and number four Hound in America. He also competed and won Best of Breed at the AKC National Championship dog show last December. He currently holds 18 All Breed Best in Show wins and is a Certified Therapy Dog. Mueller and Blake love competing and going to dog shows. Their Salukis are impressive show dogs but more importantly, they are pets and beloved members of the family. They say, “And they are all spoiled rotten!”
A b ou t Aurora Ke nne l Mueller’s first love has always been to be around dogs whether it is taking care of them, working with them, or simply spending time with them. She opened Aurora Kennel in 1990 offering all breed grooming and boarding services. The store offers holistic food and natural grooming products. Mueller says, “It’s easy to love dogs. But it takes a day-in and day-out commitment to care for them, just like a child. Aurora Kennel is open seven days a week. We pride ourselves on professionalism and taking care of your pets as if they are our own.”

SLEMP’S EXPERIENCE HAS GIVEN HER CLEAR INSIGHT INTO WHAT WILL HELP KEEP ANIMALS OUT OF THE SHELTERS. HERE ARE HER TIPS: 01 Spay or neuter your animals. Don’t breed your animals

adding to Oklahoma’s pet overpopulation problem. 02 Help rescues by fostering animals, volunteering, or donating money and goods. 03 Microchip your pet(s) and have an ID tag on the collar(s). Wouldn’t you pick up every loose dog you saw if you knew it would be easy to get them home? 04 Make a caretaker plan for your animals so they don’t end up at the shelter. If something happens to you, where will your animals go? 05 Keep your animal healthy and up to date on vaccines so if it does end up at a shelter, it won’t catch disease. 06 Research before you adopt and know adopting is for the life of the pet. Various dog breeds have different characteristics so make sure the pet is a good fit for the lifestyle you lead.
If you need help with a pet, there are multiple local resources and pet pages on Facebook that can point you in the right direction for help with food, fencing, dog houses and possible vet care. Slemp says WoofLikeToMeet.com is a great resource for all things dog that includes training, behavior problems and much more. If you’re thinking of adopting a pet, visit a shelter or a rescue. Slemp says, “You can find full breed, mixed breed, big, small, cattle dog, lap dog and everything in between at the shelter or a rescue.” She also recommends that if you’ve lost a pet, visit all the shelters in person. Information might be posted incorrectly online and lighting makes the animals’ coloring appear different in photos. Siamese-mix adopted or rescued from the BA Animal Shelter photo by Kathy Slemp.
Loving animals is Slemp’s part-time job. She has been the publisher of Tulsa Lifestyle since 2014.

PIÑLLAMA
+ Cardboard + White crepe paper + Construction paper + Glue + Scissors + Beads, yarn, pom poms, etc.
DIRECTIONS 1. Take your cardboard and cut two pieces into the shape of a llama (we found a stencil online). Then, cut strips of cardboard the depth you want your llama to be. You’ll connect these to either side of the llama cutouts to enclose your piñata. 2. Glue your strip of cardboard all along the edge of one side of your llama, then glue to the other side. (Be sure to leave a hole you can close up later so you can fill it with your favorite candy!) 3. Starting at the neck, cover the front, back and sides of your llama with white crepe paper, cutting a slit every half inch or so to create the traditional piñata look. 4. Cover all remaining sides the neck and head with white construction paper, cut to fit your design. 5. Using construction paper, beads, pom poms, tassels, buttons, etc., add some flair to the rest of your llama! Bonus points for incorporating different shapes and textures into your final product.
