Celebrating All That Is Manly! HELLO EDEN PRAIRIE LIFESTYLE READERS!

June is upon us and Father’s Day is nearly here. What better month is there to celebrate all that is manly? In preparation for our annual men’s issue, we did extensive research on what it means to be a man. We read the collected works of Earnest Hemingway. We watched every Stallone, Willis, Schwarzenegger, and Allen movie. We drank whiskey and smoked cigars, but concluded that doing so only makes it too difficult to make model airplanes, and our wives said we had to brush our teeth. In this special issue of Eden Prairie Lifestyle, we feature some of our area’s manliest small business owners. We have Jason Ivesdal, the owner of Higher Power Training, whose bicep muscles are so big that they have to be measured by the U.S. Geological Survey. We have Mike Ferrell, the proprietor of Memories Made Fishing Guides, whose only mission in life is sharing the joy that is inconveniencing fish. We have Aaron Bourdage, whose Northern Fire Grilling & BBQ Supply provides all one needs to engage in the primal art of carnivory. Finally we have Steve Lee Swift, whose Grandmasters Wing Chun Kung Fu offers instruction in the most effective

FISHING WITH PURPOSE
“WHILE I WAS OUT THERE, I WASN’T THINKING ABOUT PAYING MY BILLS OR MORTGAGE, MY WIFE OR MY KIDS, MY JOB OR THE MILITARY. I GOT TO LISTEN TO THE WATER, AND
TO BE A FERRELL MAN IS TO BE A FISHERMAN.
JUST THINK ABOUT THE FISH.”
ther took him fishing off the shore of Powderhorn
Mike Ferrell can’t recall the first time his grandfaLake, but he does remember parading around his grandparents’ backyard with his first two crappies dangling from the end of a stick. As he grew older, Mike’s father and uncle began taking him out on Lake Nokomis. That’s where Mike caught his first muskie (or a “pike on steroids,” as he calls it) and became addicted to fishing for life. “I went to college in Ely where I studied fisheries and wildlife management,” said Mike, “and I worked at Skube’s Bait & Tackle when I wasn’t in class. One day a guy walked into the shop, so tall he could have hit his head on the ceiling. I wasn’t familiar with basketball at the time or I would have known he was Kevin Gamble from the Sacramento Kings. He told me he wanted to go fishing and that he usually went with the store owner. I told him the owner was out playing golf, so he could either go with me or go alone. “You usually only see rowboats and canoes around Ely, not this guy’s 20-foot Skeeter with a 200 horse motor and all the bells and whistles. I was very nervous, but at the same time I kept the mentality that we were just going fishing, no different than usual. I took him to a spot on Shagawa Lake where I’d been doing well all that week. In about three hours we pulled in 30 walleye and 20 smallmouth bass. He caught a 28-inch walleye that day – his personal best. He decided to bring it to the taxidermist, so he probably still has it. “Mr. Gamble paid me $500 for taking him out that day, which is pretty substantial for a 19-year-old kid. But when the owner came in to work the next day, he told me he’d take half for his ‘finder’s fee!’ “A few years later I was staying at a resort in west Minnesota. They must have been short-staffed, because the owner of the place asked me to take some of his other guests out fishing. One of them, a Marine who had served in Vietnam, didn’t seem to like me all that much. I guess I asked him all the wrong questions and otherwise pushed his buttons. “Toward the end of the trip the Marine asked me to stop the boat. ‘Thanks for this,’ he said. ‘It was a nice relief.’ I began to thank him for his service, but he cut me off, telling me to be quiet and not so cliché. I’ll never forget what he said after that.

WATER & WOODS (CONTINUED)
“That night I told my girlfriend Allie I want to take veterans out fishing. We looked into volunteering with other organizations, but decided we could do it best by ourselves. My boss at the time, another fishing guide named Matt Johnson, took us out to Rapid Marine in Rogers where he helped us pick out our first boat. We printed out some fliers, and in 2014 we started taking veterans out fishing free of charge, just doing whatever we could with the cash in our pockets. In two years we needed a bigger boat, at which point Allie told me we were going to go broke if we didn’t start making some money. That’s really when Memories Made Guide Service officially started. “Our guide service is based in Apple Valley, and we fish all over the state with a focus on Lake Minnetonka. We’ll go after all the fish Minnesota has to offer in our Crestliner 1850 Fish Hawk with top-of-the-line electronics and tournament model rods. If you’ve never fished before, we’ll tell you what to expect and what kind of attire to wear. We only offer half-day trips, because a full day out on the water can be kind of a grind even for an expert angler. We don’t want you getting burned out there! “Eden Prairie has some of my favorite fishing in the whole state. Bryant Lake is one of the town’s best kept secrets, full of panfish that are easy for a beginner to reel in. You need a park pass to fish there, but it’s worth it. Nearby Lake Minnewashta is catch and release only for bass, which means the fish there can easily grow to trophy size. It’s a great spot for topwater fishing with all its shallows and lily pads. And any Minnesota lake with a dock is prime fishing for largemouth bass – just throw out a weedless Chatterbait or let a jig worm sink to the bottom. When it comes to bass in general, a jig and a worm are your best weapons. “Catching fish is the easy part for a guide. My real passion is spreading knowledge. I always feel most fulfilled whenever I can help my clients gain the confidence they need to go out and do it themselves. When that happens, I know I’ve done my job right.” You can learn more about Mike and his mission and book your own trip at memoriesmadeguides.com. 12

GRANDMASTERS WING CHUN KUNG FU (CONTINUED)
This revelation has emboldened the girl. Even days afterward, she is still giving me healthy chops when I least expect them, each accompanied by its own enthusiastic “pa-CHEW” sound effect. We’ll no doubt return to Sifu Swift shortly so I can learn to defend myself from her. I must be honest. When I first reached out to Sifu Swift, I had envisioned a story in which he would teach two blind women how to fight, and that they would then fight one another. I abandoned that thread for three reasons. First, Wing Chun is vicious. You do not spar with a martial art that is meant only to put your opponent down through the most direct measures available. Second, Wing Chun isn’t something you pick up overnight. It is a complex martial art which lets you treat a fight as though it’s a game of chess where you get three times as many turns as your opponent. A single lesson couldn’t turn anyone into a streetfighter. Third, the other blind woman was sick that day and couldn’t make it. If life were a Kung Fu movie, then Sifu Swift would be the kind of teacher you’d have to climb a mountain in order to meet with. Thankfully, it is far easier in real life to visit his training hall in the suburbs. You can learn more about him at grandmasterswingchun.com, and order his instructional DVDs including Attacked While Sitting there as well. For the real deal, you may attend class at Grandmasters Wing Chun Kung Fu at 6566 Edenvale Blvd in Eden Prairie. You can also learn more at grandmasterswingchun.com.

HIGHER POWER TRAINING 20
Eden Prairie Lifestyle | June 2020
JASON IVESDAL WAS ALWAYS THE STRONGEST BOY IN HIS CLASS. The odds of being the strongest boy in your class are good while you’re growing up in Binford, North Dakota, population 240. Jason did put in his hours pumping iron too, modeling his own routine after that of his father, a high school teacher. Jason admired his dad, and his dad was proud of a son who could knock other kids around on a football field like they were filled with straw. “I realized early on, hey – if you lift weights, you not only become a better athlete. You become more confident, too.” Jason has all the confidence of a captain standing on the deck of his battleship as he speaks in his Eden Prairie gym, Higher Power Training. He shows me around his 15 thousand square foot facility, replete with the machines, weights, and equipment he has deemed the most effective at their jobs over the years. Jason folds his arms as he explains the proper use of the hyper extension bench, revealing biceps that look like sequoias. “I’ve always had a passion for physical training and sports performance training, and knew they would be my career,” Jason continued. “I studied Exercise science at North Dakota State University and in 1997 took an internship in Dallas where I learned hands-on with career personal trainers. I worked alongside Everett Aaberg, one of the top trainers in the country. He taught me the practical side to physical training, and as a businessman he also taught me how to run my own gym. In 2004 I became a mentee under Charles Poliquin,
“THE BEST HOUSE YOU CAN INVEST IN IS YOUR BODY, THE ONLY HOUSE YOU LIVE IN 24/7”
who probably worked with the most Olympians of any man on earth. He trained athletes in about 40 different sports. “With so much great experience, I was ready to start Higher Power Training. We’re a real mom and pop operation, and people are always surprised by how much we have here: a three-lane 50 yard sprint track for speed and agility training, a massive amount of free weights and machines, and power racks like you’d find in a collegiate weight room.

“As much space as we have, I still want to use it efficiently. Chest press and rotator cuff machines just take up space in a gym because free weights and bands let you train more effectively. We don’t have those kinds of machines here, but we do have three different leg curl machines because they’re simply the best way to target hamstrings. “Fitness is the best stress reduction. Whatever comes your way, you can get through it with exercise. It will give you a more relaxed approach to life, and looking good will make you feel more confident in general. Helping people get that kind of strength is really what inspires me most. “If you want to get fit, the first place you should put your time and energy in is strength training. That requires a plan, and that plan can be complicated. We live in a world with so much available information that you can find a lot of conflicting answers. A personal trainer has heard all of them before, and knows which ones are right. A personal trainer also helps you feel accountable for sticking to your plan, and continually adapts it to keep pushing you and making you stronger. They will let you avoid the mistakes that lead to stagnating results. “One of the first things we do with anyone who comes to Higher Power Training is talk about nutrition. You’ve got to treat a body

transformation like a home remodeling process. If working out is the teardown, then nutrition, which determines the new materials you’re getting, is the actual remodel. It doesn’t have to be too complicated – pretty much just controlled portions of protein, fruits and vegetables, healthy fats like olive oil, avocado, and nuts and seeds, and finally slow carbs like brown rice, sweet potato, and quinoa. “We also talk to a new client about their schedule and how much time they can commit to exercise. We can still help you a lot even if you only have a few hours a week to spare, because our nutrition coaching really does make the time you invest that much more effective. But I have to warn you: exercise is addicting, so you’ll only want to do it more and more.” Jason and the trainers of Higher Power Training can help just about anyone get into better shape. They work with people recovering from injuries, people who want to see how good they can look, and even professional athletes – Jason has called more than 20 different Minnesota Vikings his clients over the years. He wouldn’t let me print their names, as it is probably not wise to annoy so many pro ballers by sharing their personal information. Jason would let me print his website, though. It is higherpowertraining.com.

Northern Fire Grilling & BBQ Supply ARTICLE DAVID SCHELLER
COMPETITION BARBECUE IS SERIOUS BUSINESS. The guys who enter these contests talk about their next rack of ribs like they’re building the Brooklyn Bridge. They’ve spent a lifetime experimenting with different woods, temperatures, and sauces. Ask any one of them what spices they put in their meat rub, and they’ll give you the same answer: “I could tell you, but I’d have to kill you.” (This isn’t threatening. A surprisingly high number of grill guys also happen to look like Santa Claus.) Now imagine these enthusiasts’ shock when Aaron Bourdage and his wife Missy Fisher won first place in their first barbecue competition eight years ago. Their beards must have curled.

“It all came from out of the blue,” said Aaron. “One night Missy and I were cooking ribs. Instead of running out to the store for sauce, we made our own. We loved it. The kids loved it. We started giving it out as gifts, and everyone else loved it. A buddy of mine told me to enter a competition with it, and even though we had never done that before, our sauce turned out to be our secret weapon.” In competition barbecue, you submit your meat in a simple, styrofoam box to ensure unbiased judging. As Aaron and Missy’s box was numbered 19, they named their sauce after it. Lucky 19 barbecue sauce is now available in three flavors: Pablo Honey, The Devil’s Own made with ghost chili peppers, and Kansas City style Sweet Lil’ Devil. With an auspicious start like that, Aaron and Missy had to continue grilling competitively. And when they heard their friend was selling his local barbecue supply store, it felt only natural that they commit the rest of their lives to the pit. Aaron and Missy found a great partner in former national champion Jeff Vanderlinde, whom you may have seen on TV shows including BBQ Pitmasters. The trio thus opened Minnetonka’s own Northern Fire Grilling & BBQ Supply in the spring of this year. “I’ve seen pretty much every barbecue, grill, and smoker in action that you could imagine over the past ten years,” said Aaron. “Now, I’m not knocking other people’s products – but if you find it at Northern Fire, you can be sure I’ve identified it as a superior cooker. “When you come into Northern Fire, we’re going to help you find the cooker that perfectly suits your needs. Maybe you’re an old pro who loves making burnt ends for your extended family. Maybe you just want to fire up a couple burgers on your deck every now and then. However you want to grill, we’ll give you the best quality for your money that the Twin Cities have to offer. “You don’t have to babysit a grill like your father used to anymore. Today’s cookers are Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled! So long as you have its app on your phone, you can control a modern cooker’s temperature from anywhere in the world. You can even load recipes into it and count on perfect temperatures to cook your meat throughout the day. It’s a serious upgrade from plugging in a slow cooker before you go to work.”

Although it looks simplistic, a Traeger has the ability to grill, smoke, bake, roast, braise, and barbecue, and all with the hardwood of your choosing. They offer Primo’s classic kamado style grills, one of the East’s greatest contributions to barbecue since the invention of teriyaki sauce. Northern Fire also has an eye-catching line-up of Outlaw Smokers. (Aaron will beat you to the punch in pointing out that they look like hot rods.) Outlaw makes the genuine article, meant to be attended to throughout the day by a specialist focused entirely on making the world’s tastiest brisket. For all of the impressive technology Northern Fire has in store, their simplest device is also their greatest seller: the Solo Stove, a happy stainless steel cylinder that delivers the awe of a fire pit right on your patio, but is 85 percent smokeless! Northern Fire provides the high quality fuels you need to smoke any meat just right. Their charcoals by Rockwood and Jealous Devil contain no impurities for you to guess about during your dinnertime, and their pellets by Traeger and Dansons are 100 percent hardwood. Perhaps most importantly, Northern Fire has the meats. “Do you remember how they used to advertise pork as the ‘other white meat?’” Aaron asks. “Well, that’s completely wrong – pork should never be white. We’ve partnered with Compart Family Farms, whose pork is just on another level of richness and flavor. They raise traditional Duroc pigs, and only breed stock that has passed their strict ultrasound test for marbling. We carry the best beef too, from Snake River Farms out of Boise. They raise top grade American Wagyu, which I can only describe as the most marbled and beefiest beef you’ll ever taste in your life.” Northern Fire has all the barbecue paraphernalia a pitmaster could hope for: every flavor of wood, rub, and sauce (including the Lucky 19 that started it all), as well as knives by Hammer Stahl and famed Rochester craftsman Jeb Taylor. Go there for Aaron’s help finding the perfect new cooker or just to stock up on whatever you need to convert vegetarians.
