ZuZu Mango Tango “The ZuZu Mango Tango is spicy, refreshing, and complex,” says Beverage Ambassador PJ Baron of this drink found at ZuZu at Hotel Valley Ho. “We infuse premium tequila with grilled jalapeños from chef’s garden. We add mango puree, fresh lime juice, and Agavero liqueur, which is distilled from damiana flowers (known in Latin America to get you out on the dance floor and make you fall in love... hence the name ZuZu Mango Tango).” Baron shares that the drink pairs well with the restaurant’s brunch specialty, The John Berry. “The smoky jalapeño vibe, fresh lime, and tajin rim as an accompaniment to the grilled shrimp are on point. The mango, spaghetti squash, and tomatoes all complement each other, building layers of flavor that will keep you coming back for that next bite, next sip, and second round. It’s a great brunch combo, and available seven days a week.” ZuZu offers brunch, happy hour and dinner, and is also known for its famous dessert, The Show Stopper Shake. $14; HotelValleyHo.com 22

Illicit Affair “The first description word that comes to mind is illuminating,” says Christina Demas, the lead bartender at Maple & Ash, of this drink. “The drink glows, once the first one is ordered, it turns heads. It is light, but booze-forward, it’s easy to drink a couple and not feel like you have a sugar overload.” This brightly colored drink is a mixture of Belvedere vodka, a house-made dragon fruit syrup, citrus, elderflower, and cucumber. Plus, Demas says, a few other secret ingredients to round out the flavors. “The [creation of] Illicit Affair was a joint effort between myself and Majdi Kayyali, our bar director,” she says. “We were looking to add an eye-catching vodka cocktail—something that was approachable and sexy. I joke and call it the Cosmopolitan of Scottsdale. It also shares the same name as one of Taylor Swift’s new songs. It’s easily become our top-selling cocktail.” The drink pairs well with the flavor profiles on Maple & Ash’s menu, including its Fire Roasted Seafood Tower, or one of its woodfired steaks. $18; MapleAndAsh.com

HULA’s Hurricane At HULA’s Modern Tiki, settle in for the storm with this drink, which was originally created during World War II in New Orleans, where whiskey was in short supply, and then spread throughout the world’s island cultures where rum-based tropical cocktails are popular, and storms plentiful, according M. Dana Mule, the owner of HULA’s. The glass it’s served in is similar in shape to the “hurricane lamps” of that time. “The Hurricane is a celebratory cocktail with bold flavors, and a subtle, strong gust of ‘wow’ on the backend. Perfect for all occasions, or any bad day!” Mule says. The drink is made with dark, light and gold rums infused with pineapple and vanilla bean, and topped with tropical juices and dark rum. ARTIST’S PALETTE (CONTINUED)

VIRTUOSO: SARA GARRANT, BOURBON STEAK As skillful as Executive Chef Sara Garrant is with her dishes at Michael Mina’s Bourbon Steak, you’d think she got her start in cooking at the highest of fine dining concepts in the world. But, her story is way better than that. Garrant grew up in a tiny fishing community in Alaska. She learned to cook as a small child by literally grabbing the day’s fresh catch from the pier and throwing it on a skillet, in the oven, or atop a grill. Clearly fearless from a young age, Garrant approaches her kitchen today with the same gusto, and it shows in her food. Rich and robust with beautiful attention to detail, Garrant pours her heart into every single plate she serves. Of particular note is her take on Japanese A5 ribeye, as well as her arctic char. Oh, and don’t miss the duck fat fries with dipping sauces, either! ScottsdalePrincess.com/dining/bourbon-steak/ FLAIR: HULA’S MODERN TIKI While HULA’s Modern Tiki in Scottsdale is technically in the desert, thanks to its mid-century modern décor meets swanky beach party vibe and classic tiki-inspired cocktails, it always feels like you’re on island time when inside. The expertly curated (and always awesomely garnished) cocktail menu both pays impressive homage to the more classic tropical cocktails, from the Mai Tai to the Hurricane, while showcasing the talent of its mixology team with modern riffs and impressive updated options using fresh ingredients such as pomegranates, blood oranges, as

well as top shelf spirits. HulasModernTiki.com MOTHER OF INVENTION: CHRYSA ROBERTSON, RANCHO PINOT For nearly 30 years, Executive Chef Chrysa Robertson has helmed Rancho Pinot, a seasonally-inspired restaurant in the heart of Scottsdale. She got her start working under Carol Steele, widely known as the godmother of the local culinary scene, and then under James Beard Award-winner Nancy Silverton, followed by fellow James Beard darling Hiro Sone. By 1993, she was ready to try her hand at her own concept, and chose Arizona for its home. Robertson describes her food as a melting pot of diverse flavors, much like Arizona itself. 30

Her ingredients are meant to pay homage to the smells and tastes of everywhere from here in the Southwest and Mexico to the Mediterranean. Beyond leading the charge for hyper-local dishes in the Valley, in 1998 she started the Phoenix chapter of Slow Food, an organization dedicated to the pleasures of the table, and to the preservation and sustainability of regional culinary- and food-producing traditions. RanchoPinot.com SETTING THE MOOD: MARCELLINO RISTORANTE Romance is always in the air at Marcellino, due The Americano

in large part to the obvious true love of its owners, Marcellino and Sima Verzino. Most nights, you will find both at the restaurant—Marcellino in the kitchen and Sima tending to guests or sometimes even performing live music—stealing smiles at each other throughout the night. Building on this sweet chemistry is the dark and dreamy décor, with rich woods and dim lighting inside (including a bar space Marcellino himself designed with intimacy in mind), as well as seating on the two small, cozy patios outside. And then, of course, there is the food. Chef Marcellino was born on his family’s farm in Italy, and was raised in the “farmto-table” life before it even had the name, he often says. He has stayed true to what he learned on that farm all those years ago every day since in the kitchen, and the resulting menu makes all guests not only feel welcome, but extremely special, and in the mood for nothing but love. MarcellinoRistorante.com OVERALL ARTISTIC EXCELLENCE: THE AMERICANO Earlier this year, Pomo Restaurant Group—known for Pomo Pizzeria Napoletana and Mora Italian— collaborated with Creation Hospitality to launch The Americano. The 7,000-square-foot true Italian steakhouse—in the vein of the iconic Palm Restaurant— has an open kitchen with a wood-fired grill, dark booths, and a color palette of dark grays and light greens with giant art pieces throughout. The menu is equal parts love letter to hand-made pasta, rich sauces (hello, truffles!), butter-drenched steaks, and out-of-this-world cocktails that literally smoke, sizzle, and shimmer as they are delivered tableside

ROAD TRIP (CONTINUED)

Old Town Cottonwood is just 15 minutes from the Page Springs vineyards or Alcantara. Upon arriving on the cozy Main Street (yes, that is its name), the best plan is to set up a home base at The Tavern Hotel, a historic building refurbished in recent years into one of Northern Arizona’s top accommodation options. They have deluxe rooms and luxury penthouses, all with free parking, access to a private pool, zero resort fees, free wi-fi, and “guests only” cards good for discounts all over town, including several of the wineries. If up for a special occasion, the reasonably priced 2,300-square-foot Tavern Hotel Penthouse is well worth it. The Main Street of Cottonwood boasts several restaurants—notably Pizzeria Bocce, Crema Café (best brunch in Arizona), and Merkin Osteria. And then there’s the wine. At Burning Tree, there is lush patio furniture one might expect at a friend’s fancy pool party rather than at a winery. Directly across the street is Arizona Stronghold Vineyards, which has a lovely patio hidden behind its storefront. There are sips exclusive to the tasting room, as well as a full kitchen serving tapas, cheese plates, skewers—including duck, elk, and bison options—and even desserts. A few doors down from Burning Tree and more or less kitty-corner from Stronghold are both Carlson Creek Vineyards and Pillsbury Wine Company. Each offers wine tasting flights, as well as locally made wines by the glass and bottle. Joining them along Main Street are also Winery 101, which features wines from the husband and wife winemaker owners; State Bar, an indoor-outdoor bar with yard games and both local wines and beers on tap; and Small Batch Wine & Spirits, a family-owned tasting room with both boutique wines and craft beers.

FRANCINE BRINGS THE FLAVORS OF THE MEDITERRANEAN TO SCOTTSDALE

Scottsdale Lifestyle | October 2020

An Ode to France

“THE INSPIRATION WAS THE CUISINE OF FRANCINE, THE MOTHER OF THE FOUNDER OF THE RESTAURANT,” SAYS LAURENT HALASZ, FOUNDER AND OWNER OF FRANCINE, WHICH OPENED RECENTLY AT SCOTTSDALE FASHION SQUARE. “She cooks in the style of the French Riviera, with local and seasonal ingredients.” This new restaurant, which offers French Mediterranean cuisine—”light on butter and cream, with an emphasis on olive oil and fresh herbs,” Halasz says—is helmed by Valley native and classically French trained Executive Chef Brian Archibald. “FRANCINE’s flavor profile is Mediterranean, or as we like to say the ‘food of the sun.’ Everything you will find on the menu at FRANCINE will be similar to the flavor profiles and coastal cuisine that you might find right now in the French Riviera,” Archibald explains. Additionally, Archibald’s longstanding relationships with farms and purveyors allows FRANCINE to showcase some extraordinary dishes that are sourced from around the word. Some of those extraordinary dishes? The dinner menu features items such as Striped Bass, Steak Tartare, Bouillabaisse, Grilled Octopus, Zucchini Carpaccio, Salad Nicoise, Ratatouille Tart, Poulet Roti, Mushroom & Taleggio Pizza, Bone Marrow, and Seared Duck a la Provencal. For lunch and afternoon hours, the menu showcases a selection of salads, carpaccio, pizza, and informal and shareable dishes. There will also be seasonal flavors incorporated into the menu. The décor at FRANCINE is elegant and homey, created with beige, gray, and blue, with South of France design elements. “[The] cuisine is modern and vibrant, and the décor welcoming, making FRANCINE a perfect destination for many dining occasions,” Halasz says.
