LISTON DESIGN BUILD HONORED BY HOUZZ PATIO DESIGN MAKES TOP 10 LIST

12

St. Charles County Lifestyle | March 2020

LISTON DESIGN BUILD, LOCATED IN ST. CHARLES, WAS RECENTLY FEATURED ON HOUZZ’S “THE 10 MOST POPULAR PATIOS OF 2019 LIST.” Every year, the home design website highlights the most-saved patio photos, and Liston Design Build made it to the #9 spot. Just to give you some context, Houzz receives more than 40 million unique visitors each month. “For this project in St. Charles, we created a custom home for our clients that was optimized for their family’s needs and lifestyle,” says Owner Keith Liston. “This included an outdoor living space designed to be an elegant spot for dining and relaxing. To achieve this, we built a covered porch with an outdoor kitchen and grilling area. “We stained the ceiling in a custom gray shade and installed matching outdoor Shaker-style cabinetry. For the flooring, we chose a contemporary look with Aberdeen pavers. We also included an outdoor ceiling fan to provide additional comfort in the summer. The final result is a polished, yet cozy patio space that’s perfect for entertaining guests all year round.” This project also received the “Custom Home of the Year” award from the Home Builders Association of St. Louis & Eastern Missouri.

THE MORE YO U K N O W. . . A GUIDE TO BUILDING YOUR CUSTOM HOME

ARTICLE NORMA STOLTZ - EXECUTIVE HOMES

YOU’RE READY FOR A NEW HOME. You know what you want and, just as important, what you don’t. You’ve decided new construction is your best option, but you’re worried it will be too complicated, expensive or time-consuming. To simplify the process, imagine your new home is a giant jigsaw puzzle. You know what you want the finished “picture” to be. Now you just need help putting all the pieces together. With a clear understanding of your preferred location, type of home, building timeline and cost, the first step is to choose your builder. Here are some important factors to consider before beginning:

20

St. Charles County Lifestyle | March 2020

Relax and Surround Yourself by Nature.. + Choose your location. This includes the community, the view and the likelihood of any changes to the surrounding

area that could impact future value. Unlike flooring or paint color, your homesite can’t be changed if you tire of it later. + Decide on the type of home you want, based on the size of your family (now and in the future) and what features are most important—the must-haves and the would-like-to-haves. + Choose an experienced home builder—one who will

understand your needs, engage in your vision, respect your budget and value your time. Do your research and, if possible, visit other homes the company has built. + Schedule your first meeting. It’s important to establish a “comfort level.” If the meeting doesn’t go well, it probably won’t get better during the many months it takes to build.

the budget you want to set. Often our wish list exceeds our financial reality. While it’s good to get everything you’d like in your new home—that’s why you’re building—you want to be able to sleep well at night. Convey this honestly to your builder and be certain to get as much “up front” pricing as possible. You won’t be happy with costly last-minute surprises. + Be realistic in your expectations. THE EXPANSIVE SKIES OF NEW TOWN AND UNIQUE WATER VIEWS INSPIRED THE ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN OF THIS FOUR-STORY CUSTOM HOME. Working with the Architect, Tim Busse, homeowner Jenny Powell says she used his ability to “see out through the windows” even though it was just a plan on paper. They designed window placements and additional features to allow beautiful vistas from every floor. Jenny says from the sunrise porch, you can view the country vistas and the community pool with its lazy river, as dawn breaks across New Town. FOR BUSY FAMILIES, FINDING TIME TO EAT TOGETHER ISN’T ALWAYS EASY, BUT COMING TOGETHER AROUND THE DINNER TABLE REGULARLY ISN’T JUST ABOUT KEEPING HUNGRY BELLIES FULL. Family meals nourish the spirit, brain and overall health. Children who grow up sharing family meals are also more likely to exhibit prosocial behavior as adults, such as sharing, fairness and respect. Research has also shown that with each additional family meal shared during the week, adolescents are less likely to show symptoms of violence, depression and suicide; less likely to use or abuse drugs or run away; and less likely to engage in risky behavior or delinquent acts. DIRECTIONS Heat oven to 375 F. In large skillet, cook ground beef and onion until beef is thoroughly cooked and onions are tender. Drain. Stir in ketchup and mustard. On ungreased baking sheet, flatten biscuit dough to form 6-inch rounds. Spoon beef mixture onto one side of flattened dough. Sprinkle with cheese. Top with dill pickle half. Fold dough over filling. With fork tines, press dough edges to seal. Cut two slits in top of dough to release steam. Brush each turnover with egg wash. Bake 18-22 minutes, or until deep golden brown. Local home décor expert, Sarah Corrigan, owner of The White Hare in Cottleville, gives these additional home decorating trends and tips:

She says gray is still popular in the overall decorating scheme but seen more now with heavy cream/white as a partner or as an accent color. Browns of all tones are being introduced back into the mix with gray, allowing this lovely friendship to bring some of the missed warmth back into the scene. With more people working from home these days, it changes the way we decorate and want to feel about our decor. That said, we are seeing a lot more of an “outside-in” approach using a lot of mixed woods and stones with a heavy use of natural fibers such as rattan, fringe and sea grasses. As far as botanicals, we’re seeing less of the traditional floral arrangements and more of the fern, loose floral stem bouquet or artistic succulent display, even if still of the “faux” persuasion. Other natural textures will continue to be seen as well as lighter, natural unfinished wood. No need to panic if you’ve turned your entire home to gray, as many of these lighter woods will easily transition with gray-toned decor. Mixed metals are very popular with gold tones--updated brass continuing to be a strong leader in the pack. (NO, you can’t keep your 90’s brass). As far as color, at this most recent market we saw a lot of creams, classic blues, muted browns, greens, matte blacks, pale pinks and just a hint of red and orange. Vintage, unique finds such as magnifying glasses, compasses, and trinket boxes, as well as hand-carved items like candle holders, bowls or shelf accessories, are huge right now. We’re also seeing dog-focused decor being more prominent than ever, with people considering their pets as part of the family. March 2020 | St. Charles County Lifestyle

Most food subscription boxes will allow you to choose a delivery day and time frame that works best for you. Your grocery items will be packaged as intuitively as possible, with any refrigerator items tucked in with ice packs. Bonus: You can reuse the insulation and ice packs in kids’ lunch boxes, on road trips or in your own lunches at work.

Depending on what you order, you may need some of your own supplies. When you select your meals, think about what you will need to cook the food in and if any other kitchen utensils would be helpful. Have them ready to go so you don’t have to make any last-minute trips to the store, defeating the purpose of getting your box delivered! If the meals are foods you would enjoy reheated, you could do all of your cooking the day you get the box to meal prep for your week, or you can just store the ingredients to the other meals in your fridge and cook them throughout the week.

If you’re a little less-experienced in the kitchen, meal kits are great for learning! Read the instructions carefully before you get started so you don’t feel frazzled while the heat is up high, and take your time. If you are a more seasoned chef, feel free to take your own spin on the recipes and add some extra flavor or swap out ingredients to make it perfect for your palate.

This is the really fun part! It’s time to start taste-testing. Make a note tab in your phone for tracking what you love and what isn’t your favorite. That way, when it’s time to select more meals, you know what you have tried and what you absolutely have to try again. Don’t forget to ask your family what was a hit and a miss. Who knows— maybe the kids love some of the Purple Carrot recipes and don’t even notice how many veggies they are eating!
