HOW TO WINTER LIKE A NORWEGIAN In Norway, there is a saying, “There is no bad weather, only bad clothing.” This phrase is exactly how Norway-native physical therapist, Shanette Menegus, wants us to think about winter in Central Oregon. Yet, as the temperatures continue to drop, it can be challenging for some to find ways to stay both positive and active. It can seem less inviting to go outside for a walk or a hike when it is cold outside. “Being able to take yourself into the new year with promises for healthy living and a vision for what your new year should bring, requires a conscious effort,” said Shanette. That means opening yourself up to the outdoors. Fresh air with a connection to nature are fundamental to any Norwegian. As a physical therapist, Shanette talks with her patients about what outdoor winter activity can look like. She teaches the importance of year-round activity for not only the body but also the soul. For someone who has grown up in warmer climates and then relocated to Central Oregon, it can be a challenge to understand how appropriate layers of clothing can help to create an outstanding winter day in the mountains. Locally, we are fortunate to have clear blue skies and inviting trails on which we can explore. Shanette encourages discovering new hobbies for stimulating the mind and moving the body. Nordic skiing, skate skiing, snowshoeing, alpine skiing, and snowboarding are all within a very short drive of our homes. Wanoga Park even allows you to bring your favorite four-legged friend along for the journey. The Norwegian viewpoint is that finding beauty in the tasks makes them more enjoyable. “Nike has it right,” said Shanette. “Just do it.”
WHY SAUNAS ARE ESSENTIAL TO NORWEGIANS
In the wintertime clinic setting, physical therapists see a lot of muscle sprain injuries, especially of the wrist and ankles. Preventing these injuries requires ensuring you have good flexibility. Norwegians are known for their saunas. They know that flexibility can be improved in the sauna and steam rooms. Deep penetrating heat can be very beneficial to addressing tightness in the muscles and soft tissues. “The heat allows you to push the limits of your flexibility because the warmth can work out stubborn tightness and pain in your muscles,” said Shanette. Try incorporating saunas before and after winter activities to maintain flexibility. But don’t just sit in a sauna. Stretch your body while in there and be sure to hydrate. Research shows that stretching in the sauna can improve flexibility by 205%. All types of stretching will suffice, however, the hip flexors, which are often very tight can melt like butter with regular sauna use. Shanette also recommends sauna use for deepening relaxation, which allows you to come out more rejuvenated. And that is the whole point for connecting with nature while also moving your body - to rejuvenate yourself.

TEN YEARS AGO, WHEN CYNTHIA LAROCHE WAS STILL NEW TO TEACHING YOGA, A GROUP OF WOMEN ASKED HER TO LEAD A RETREAT SOMEWHERE WARM. Cynthia had no clue what this yoga retreat would look like or what participants, both seasoned yogis and those new to the practice, might expect from an intensive week of yoga, but she said, yes. In 2020, she will lead her tenth retreat at the Mar de Jade Wellness & Vacation Retreat Center in Chacala, Mexico (north of Puerto Vallarta). Cynthia, and fellow instructors, Banni Bunting and Angela Goodstein, will guide participants through daily yoga sessions, meditation, breath work and crystal healing.

On the first day of the retreat, Cynthia gathers everyone in Mar de Jade’s yoga studio overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Some are nervous about what to expect. They’re worried the yoga will be too strenuous. Others secretly worry two hours of yoga might

be boring. Most have specific goals to return home energized, healed, or even slimmer. Cynthia asks them to tune into the rhythmic crashing of waves against the rocky coast and breathe. Mar de Jade means jewel of the sea, and the staff encourage guests to unburden themselves by tossing their burdens like rocks for the ocean to carry away. Each day of the retreat includes twice daily yoga, in addition to dedicated breath work, meditation guidance and crystals specifically chosen for healing each chakra (the seven energy centers along the spine). Afternoons are spent relaxing in oceanside hammocks, paddle boarding, walking into the nearby town of Chacala or touring the Montessori School, which the resort owners opened, before everyone gathers again for sunset yoga and dinner of locally caught fish. The resort has its own organic farm, the source of daily meals, including a breakfast favorite of freshly sliced papaya. Wholesome meals and basking in the sun and balmy breezes of the Pacific set the stage for a deeper, more patient

exploration of a yoga practice. So often, Cynthia says, people are in a hurry to change something about themselves; they want to leave the yoga mat transformed. She sees students “bumping up against” aspects of themselves, the “unruly pieces” they’d rather leave behind. The body wants to fidget, the mind sail away. She invites her students to stay in the “uncomfortable sensa-

the body’s fidgeting or resistance. “If we turn toward the things we push up against,” she says, “and allow those things in, we begin to see the walls that we’ve built up around our own hearts. If you can sit within an uncomfortable moment and not run from it, there’s an opportunity to soften around the resistance… and in the softening we become more receptive, more open to receive what has always been available to us, the magnificence of our own potential.” For those who can’t embark on a weeklong retreat or even squeeze in weekly yoga classes, Cynthia offers some simple, practical tools for nurturing a mindfulness practice at home. “Before I get out of bed in the morning I always say, ‘Thank you’ or ‘Wow!’ This morning practice puts me in the equation… I get to choose, to decide, regardless of what’s going on… we forget how powerful we are,” she says, especially when we are faced with pain, sickness, heartache or disappointment. She also suggests setting an alarm and sitting quietly for one minute. Maybe it turns into two or three minutes, she says, but start with one. These simple practices shape her day and create space for reflectiveness. A weeklong retreat in Mexico may be balm for body and soul, deepening one’s yoga practice, but Cynthia says it is not necessary to travel thousands of miles to foster self-acceptance and love. She cites an interpretation of one of her favorite Buddhist teachings: you will search the world over and find no one more deserving of your love than yourself. INDOOR PLANTS CREATE HEALTHY BATHROOM SPACES
22
Bend Lifestyle | January 2020
Left: Pothos and philodendron tolerate the lower light and fluctuations of temperature found in many showers. Right: Popular rain shower heads pair with plants in a shower to create a rainforest effect.
IN 2020, THE DECORATING TREND OF INDOOR
PLANTS
CONTINUES
AND
EXPANDS TO INCLUDE THE BATHROOM. Given the dry climate of Central Oregon, a shower space shouldn’t be overlooked to create a healthy and serene oasis of green. Yet, the trend isn’t just aesthetic. Plants not only evoke a nature-inspired, mood-elevating feeling, but they also filter carbon dioxide and toxins during their photosynthesis process to oxygenate the air and create a healthier environment. Many houseplants thrive in low to moderate light with higher humidity, but not all plants are suited for the fluctuations in temperature between shower time and colder, non-use hours. Considering factors of low light, high humidity and temperature swings, some choices include: bromeliads, cyclamen, bamboo, pothos, snake plants, spider plants and orchids. And if a shower isn’t a suitable place for a plant, consider shelves or windowsills to create a healthy, serene space to start the day.

Understanding Hypnotherapy Means Unlocking the Power of the Brain to Help Achieve a Better Quality of Life
CYNTHIA CROSSMAN HAS ALWAYS THRIVED ON HELPING OTHERS ACHIEVE A BETTER QUALITY OF LIFE, AND SPENT MANY YEARS TEACHING YOGA MEDITATION. When she moved to Bend in 2015, Cynthia found a new calling as a hypnotherapist. “I saw the need for this in our community,” she says, “and it’s an exciting, innovative field.” She trained with a hypnotherapist in Portland and was certified in 2017 through the Banyan Hypnosis Center. Here, Cynthia shares insights on both old misconceptions and new applications of hypnotherapy.

Q
Q
WHAT DO YOU WANT PEOPLE TO BETTER UNDERSTAND ABOUT HYPNOSIS?
First, let’s clarify what hypnosis is NOT: it’s not entertainment and it’s not mind con-
trol. To be hypnotized, a person must want this on some level. I can’t hypnotize someone against their will. During hypnosis, you are not asleep or unconscious. You actually are in a heightened state of awareness, but deeply relaxed. Hypnosis works with the subconscious mind, which is the database of our lives. The subconscious keeps all our experiences, thoughts, feelings, and habits in its library. We can access the subconscious through hypnosis to change thought patterns that cause problems for us. C yn thia C
CAN YOU EXPLAIN HOW HYPNOSIS WORKS IN THE BRAIN? The conscious mind is very protective. Without it, we’d be overwhelmed by too
sm an
many options and stimuli. But the conscious mind dislikes change, so we need
ro s
to access the subconscious mind to form new, positive habits. Negative habits, like smoking, often simply settle in over time. We reset those desires through positive suggestions during hypnosis, such as, “I feel great being a non-smoker.” Sometimes, we need to resolve problems based in childhood experiences. Maybe a person is numbing feelings from past trauma. Through hypnosis we can go back to that time and reset the reaction to the experience, choosing a more positive path. The adult self can talk to the child self and reinforce the idea that it’s going to be okay. Hypnotherapy does not focus on reliving trauma–it’s more about understanding the event from an adult perspective and sharing that with the child self. YOU’VE HELPED PEOPLE WITH EXTREME WEIGHT LOSS. CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT THAT PROCESS?
Virtual gastric bypass is a wonderful option for those who need to lose a sig-
nificant amount of weight. Often their doctor has recommended surgical gastric bypass, which reduces the actual stomach volume. Virtual gastric bypass, through hypnosis, causes a person to believe their stomach is smaller. They eat smaller portions and feel satisfied with less food. During hypnosis, we first explore the person’s relationship with food—especially emotional eating. We have a positive conversation to realign these habits. Our second session involves visualizing the gastric bypass procedure, from arriving at the doctor’s office to the placement of a band around their stomach. It’s an alternative to surgery that is non-invasive,

CAN HYPNOTHERAPY REDUCE CHRONIC PAIN?
experiences, thoughts, feelings, and
Acute pain tells us when something is harming us. But chronic
pain, such as back pain which affects millions of people, can mean the nerves and brain are set in a pattern that no longer serves us. Sometimes anxiety from expecting discomfort is enough to trigger a desire for medication. We can disrupt that cycle and reduce the use of medication working in partnership with the client’s doctor.
