Sue Collins | scollins@lifestylepubs.com

Happy April, MY MOM USED TO SAY, “APRIL SHOWERS BRING MAY FLOWERS.” Here in the south, our flowering trees and bulbs have already started to pop and spring is tugging us along into warmer weather. Mom was an optimist. Living in Michigan, perhaps were it not for her sunny disposition, we would have all been miserable. Winter goes on and on there (though, not this year, as our globe struggles). My brother Tim was born in Detroit April 20 and more than once he celebrated a birthday with a toboggan party at the golf course. Now, he lives in Northern Michigan, above the 45th parallel and chops cords of wood each fall to fuel his wood-burning furnace all winter long. He was born to embrace winter, I guess. Happy Birthday, big brother!

I applaud his commitment to using renewable and natural resources (fallen wood from his property - helping keep the forest fire free and healthy). Over its lifecycle, the biomass is a carbon-neutral fuel source. Cool! In my house, I can’t do anything quite as grandiose, but I recycle religiously, try to buy gently used stuff (garden tools, baby gear for the grandson, shelves for the garage, lawn furniture, even a sweet ski jacket) and add as little mass to the landfill as I can. THE DRIVE FROM ARUBA’S TIDY QUEEN BEATRIX INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT TO THE HOTELS (HIGH RISE AND LOW RISE DISTRICTS), IS AS CARIBBEAN AS YOU’D HOPED, WITH GLIMPSES OF TURQUOISE BAYS, STRAINS OF STEEL DRUM MUSIC AND ROWS OF SHOPS TAUNTING TOURISTS. Much of the architecture, however, is pastel and proper, tipping toward colonial, influenced by Danish settlers giving Aruba a refined and welcoming face. What began as a fishing outpost for Amerindians has changed hands between the Spanish and Dutch throughout the centuries, and is now a diverse constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Aruba is a true melting pot, with over 90 nationalities represented in its population of more than 110,000 friendly residents. The pride runs deep, calling Arubans home. Daniel grew up in Aruba, starting at the Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino as a bar back and was recognized for his gregarious nature and work ethic. He says Marriott believed in him and provided extensive mixology training and now he is a featured bartender at the swank lobby bar and restaurant. The night we arrived, he was shaking a very sophisticated Old Fashioned, smoked in a tiny jewel box fired with cedar chips. That beats rum punch all day. Aruba continued to surprise me, with 18 percent of the island designated a national park. Arikok National Park stretches across nearly 8,000 acres along Aruba’s rugged northeast coastline. The volcanic lava formations provide an exciting terrain for 20

an adventurous drive in an open-air UTV (utility terrain vehicle). Getting behind the wheel, settling into the bumps and ruts, I forgot where I was until our guide signaled us to pull off, pointing to Conchi, The Natural Pool. We stopped for a swim in the warm water to rinse off the dust, listening to the wild waves crashing just the other side of the cliffs. To soothe our windburned faces, we stopped at the Aruba Aloe Factory, toured the farm founded in 1890 and slathered on their hypoallergenic face lotion fortified with pure aloe vera (leaves hand-cut within hours of harvest), vitamin E and jojoba oil. Heading back to the Marriott, we had a choice between the family pool and adultonly pool. The larger “family” pool offered up just the right amount of party with three generations hanging out by the pool bar, a surprisingly talented frat boy grandson singing Motown hits, poolside, generously playing to the audience of late afternoon swimmers all sipping drinks. We watched the sunset over five courses at the Marriott’s “pop up” restaurant, Atardi, ON the beach. Tucking our shoes away on the patio, we could dig our toes into the sand and feel Aruba’s pull. BACK STAGE (CONTINUED) LISTEN TO THIS CINDY’S FAVORITE PIECES 1. Faure’Requiem: It is French, in a minor key, and most importantly, features the violas. 2. Mozart Requiem: It’s a fabulous piece of work, in the key of d minor. There is a mystery surrounding this piece. Mozart died before it was completed. 3. Libertango by Piazzola: It makes me want to dance! 4. Beethoven Symphony #6, #7 & #9: No reason, just love them, I can’t choose just one. 5. Tchaikovsky Symphony #6: It’s a very passionate work. FIVE MUSICAL COMPOSITIONS I LOVE JCSO MAESTRO WAYNE BAUGHMAN Like most musicians I know, I find it impossible to pick a single favorite composition or even a top-five or top ten, maybe not even a top 100. Here are five that I have grown to love over many years. 1. Ein Deutsches Requiem (A German Requiem) by Johannes Brahms. Frequently referred to as the “Protestant Requiem” because of its use of selected scriptures from the German Bible rather than the traditional Catholic Requiem Mass. Many listeners find its message refreshing, soothing and hopeful. 2. Symphony No. 1 in D minor (“The Titan”) by Gustav Mahler. In my opinion, the symphonic form achieves near perfection in terms of structure, instrumentation and sheer harmonic and melodic beauty in the first of his nine complete symphonies. Somewhat underappreciated in his own time, Mahler’s music gained tremendous popularity in the mid-twentieth century establishing him as a true genius. 3. Der Rosenkavalier Suite by Richard Strauss. This twenty-four-minute composition condenses everything that’s wonderful about Strauss’s three hour plus comic opera to create one of the most satisfying orchestral suites ever written. I could listen to this music once a day forever and not get tired of hearing it. 4. Lux Aeterna (Eternal Light) by Morten Lauridsen. This setting of portions of the Catholic Requiem Mass is about as close to heaven as one could possibly get. Lauridsen’s harmonic treatment of chant-like melodies is mesmerizing and other-worldly. This music is an ideal accompaniment for serious contemplation. 5. Cinema Paradiso Main Theme by Ennio Morricone, arrangement by Takayuki Hattori. If you cried while watching the movie, you’ll continue crying when you hear this fabulous arrangement of Morricone’s unforgettable theme. This arrangement was created for violinist, Gil Shaham, and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. 26

Keep Johns Creek Beautiful invites you to join in the fun and show your commitment to keeping our city clean, beautiful, and litter-free by committing to adopting a road or by participating in a citywide “plogging” event! Litter on our roadways is not only unsightly, it eventually finds its way into our waterways and into the Chattahoochee River, which is our source of drinking water.

ABOUT ADOPT-A-ROAD: Adopt-A-Road is a litter prevention program sponsored by the City of Johns Creek and Keep Johns Creek Beautiful to encourage community engagement and promote civic responsibility through small gestures of great impact: debris removal along Johns Creek’s roadways. Since the program’s inception, AdoptA-Road has offered individuals, civic organizations, schools, and businesses the opportunity to beautify over 30 miles of road in Johns Creek, pledging to keep their road litter free year-round. Participating groups receive high visibility safety vests, tools for debris removal and disposal, and training on how to safely and responsibly complete their service. In recognition of continued support and commitment to improving our environment, the City of Johns Creek installs signage at both ends of each adopted road segment, identifying the volunteer group responsible for its quarterly clean-ups and beautification projects. In addition, Keep Johns Creek Beautiful has a gold star merit system to acknowledge volunteers’ efforts. “Our

who

make a two-year commitment to wake up on a Saturday morning and go out into the community and pick up litter along the roadway are the most amazing people to me. They show an inspiring level of dedication to doing small local actions that collectively make a huge impact toward making our little corner of the world a better place. I am proud that they are a part of our volunteer family.”

CULINARY CREATIONS

Kabob Koobideh with Beyond Meat

ARTICLE CHEF PEYMAN ROSTAMI

PERSIAN BASKET MARKET - KITCHEN & BAR

INGREDIENTS + 1 ½ pound Beyond Meat + 1 medium yellow onions + 1 garlic cloves, peeled and minced + 1 tsp sumac (sold at the Middle Eastern markets) + Ground Black Pepper, Salt, Turmeric, Powdered Saffron + Olive oil to brush the kabob before grilling – optional INSTRUCTIONS 1. For best results Beyond Meat should be room temperature. 2. Finely chop the onion pieces in a food processor until very juicy. Place a fine metal mesh over a bowl and strain the processed onion by pressing it with a spatula. Discard the juice. 3. Add the remaining onion pulp to a medium bowl. 4. Add Beyond Meat, minced garlic, salt, Turmeric & a small dash of Saffron to the bowl. Knead until mixture is paste-like. 5. Divide the paste into two equal balls. 6. Get one of the balls of paste in the palm of your hand, place the skewer on top of it and squeeze the paste around the skewer. Once you make sure that paste is not going to fall off, start squeezing it from top to bottom and cover the middle section of the skewer. Leave the top and bottom of the skewer clear. Wet your fingers with the tap water and keep squeezing and spreading the paste evenly around the skewer. The paste should be about ½ inch thick all around the skewer. 7. Set the skewer gently on a shallow baking sheet with sides, so the paste does not touch the bottom. To grill the Koobideh use two square metal pipes to form a rack for skewers. Turn skewers often and be careful not to overcook or touch grate. Serve on a piece of flatbread. Slide kebab off the skewer onto the serving platter. The flavorful kabob juices make the bread delicious. Serve with Persian Rice or grilled vegetables and a sprinkle of sumac PersianBasketATL.com 42
