THE VIEW IS BREATHTAKINGLY BEAUTIFULNOTHING SHORT OF STUNNING. Gazing over the 100 acres of Hidden Hills Farm and Vineyard, the eye takes in the expanse of green, the horses amid play, and the equestrian center with its handmade barn doors. The larger than life sliding doors give way to a warm space beckoning one to sit and savor a glass of Hidden Hills wine. Each detail of the tasting room that’s within the working equestrian barn, was carefully chosen by Robin Sagoskin. The polished concrete floor, the soaring beams, and the warmly glowing globed chandeliers all work together to create the perfect balance. Cozy seating is throughout and along the wall is a custom created tasting bar.

Frederick Lifestyle | May 2020
Robin Sagoskin, owner of Hidden Hills Farm and Vineyard, has made her way to vintner by way of Wall Street and foreign language instruction. She’s at the stage when most people are thinking of doing less, but as she says, “Where many people at this time in their lives are winding down, I am going full force.” Along with her role as CEO of Hidden Hills, Robin finds time to be on the Board of the Washington National Opera and is a wife, a mom and a member of the Rotary Club of Frederick. Searching for an agri-business to complement their horse farm, Robin weighed the options. “I wanted to preserve and share the beautiful green spaces of this county, and I was aware that Frederick County was becoming known for wine. Everything else kind of followed,” she says. Making excellent wine is part skill and part magic; Robin knows this well. Prior to the launch of her winery in 2014, the focus was on gaining knowledge to grow the best grapes in Maryland. She says, “I was willing to hire and learn from the best people and I developed these wonderful relationships with others. We [local vintners] learn from and share with each other. It’s a great community for this business.” “I wanted to grow Maryland’s grape, the Chambourcin,” she says, “and I wanted to make the best Chambourcin and Vidal Blanc. Everyone grows a lot of other things, but if we had to pick two grapes that could be completely left on their own, these are the ones.” This didn’t happen overnight; it took four years for the Chambourcin to start producing and Robin hasn’t stopped there. “Both our Vidal Blanc and our Chambourcin won gold medals for the state,” she says.
Supporting charities and loving and caring for horses continue to be two of Robin’s greatest passions. In the past, buyers could purchase a special Hidden Hills wine which could have their horse printed on a label and all proceeds benefited Days End Farm Horse Rescue in Mount Airy. In addition, Robin says, “We have also created a special wine called Challedon that we use to benefit the Weinberg Center for the Arts in Frederick.” As a nod to her love of all things equestrian, all Hidden Hills wines are named after specific horses or breeds of horses. Robin is in love with Frederick and where she is in life. To describe her, joie de vivre is fitting. She is full of life, quick to say, “yes” to supporting others, whether it be a charity or a young woman. She says, “I will say in all the jobs I have ever had; I was usually the first woman. As one of the first women on Wall Street, it was a challenge, but we all helped one another. So many women were good to me. Many people were so helpful and supportive in this industry, so if I can give back by supporting and encouraging younger women or organizations, that’s what I want to do.” CityLifestyle.com/Frederick

keeping it real AWARD WINNING BLOGGERS GO FOR THE GUSTO IN FREDERICK COUNTY ARTICLE RHONDA STEPHENS PHOTOGRAPHY REBECCA MITCHELL
KEEPING IT REAL IS MORE THAN A TAGLINE FOR THE HOUSEWIVES OF FREDERICK COUNTY. Sisters and friends, and now neighbors, these Middletown ladies are the creative minds behind the multiyear award-winning “Best of Frederick” blog, The Housewives of Frederick County. “Being identical twins has made us special. Even though we have grown up identical and are used to it, so many people want to know what it’s like to be a twin,” says Terri, of the sisterly duo Terri and Pam. She can’t help but laugh as she says, “Throughout our lives, we were called Pete and Repeat. We were always compared to one another!” Spend any amount of time with the Housewives, you’re likely to find them in their golf cart driving between their next-door homes and you will definitely find that these ladies are pure fun. Warning! You’re likely to get a cramp in your side from all the laughter! 18

Grandmother had never shared that information with their mom. “So, we have Gambinos in our family. We know people!” Terri laughs, imitating an Italian accent. “It’s a mind-blowing experience, and we’ve tried to embrace it and have even attended our family reunion in New Jersey!” Beginning their blog as a resource for Frederick County in 2012, Pam says, “We feel like we’re doing more than just being a resource, we’re helping people, and we love to share and empower others. We might be Housewives of Frederick County, but we’re keeping it as real and as grounded as possible and want to be the positive resource where people want to go to connect. We’re not controversial. We’re just happy.” You can find the Real Housewives of Frederick County on Facebook and Instagram.

F I VE WOME N GETTING PERSONAL WITH WOMEN WHO ARE MAKING A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE
K AT H I E C A L L A H A N B R A D Y PRESIDENT AND CEO OF FITCI
WHAT WAS A CHALLENGE YOU HAD TO OVERCOME IN YOUR LIFE? A long struggle with Lyme, which meant I couldn’t run anymore and then for a while not being able to get out of bed. WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED? Every problem has a solution, we just have to look at the problem in a different way and surround yourself with brilliant people. Both have served me well. WHICH CAREER MIGHT YOU HAVE PURSUED IF NOT FOR THE ONE YOU’RE IN? I grew up on a 300-acre experimental farm and have always loved agriculture, which I studied for a while. Then I moved to computer science, then medicine, and finally circled back to my entrepreneurial roots. WHAT HAS INSPIRED YOU DURING THIS TIME OF THE VIRUS? My heart is warmed by the entrepreneurial spirit of individuals who are diving in to help one another during this pandemic. Whatever our new world may look like, it’s exciting to think about how much further our technology and science will have grown; the amazing possibilities, the partnerships and the pivots companies will have made because of it. I’m thankful that FITCI has a great ecosystem that we can call upon to help in a small way.

LINDA SINGH INTERIM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AND CEO OF TEDCO
WHAT’S THE MOST SPONTANEOUS THING YOU’VE EVER DONE? Marry my husband. After dating for 5 plus years one day, I said to him, “let’s make a commitment to either get married or go our separate ways,” and he said let’s get married tomorrow, so we did. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR CAREER? The wide variety of work experiences that I’ve been able to be a part of over the last 38 years. Experiences that range from working for a pretzel shop, Airpax, Leeds & Northrup, Accenture, the U.S. Army National Guard, Maryland Cabinet Secretary to TEDCO as Interim Executive Director/CEO, and a Leader-in-Residence at Towson University. WHAT WAS A CHALLENGE YOU HAD TO OVERCOME IN YOUR LIFE? There were so many, but the most challenging was being without a home and figuring out from day-to-day where I was going to stay. WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED? That I needed to get over myself. If I was going to succeed in this world, I had to realize that not everything was about me. IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT IS SOMETHING POSITIVE THAT HAS COME OUT OF THIS QUARANTINE? One good thing is that it has pushed and challenged everyone to rise up and learn how to operate using technology and distance to achieve productivity.

FIVE WOMEN OF INFLUENCE (CONTINUED)
SHABRI MOORE PRINCIPAL AND FOUNDER OF MOORE WEALTH WHAT WAS A CHALLENGE YOU HAD TO OVERCOME IN YOUR LIFE? Learning that I could raise our sons, build a successful business, and live a full life after the sudden death of my husband. WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED? It was in the form of a question: “What are you waiting for?” WHAT DRIVES YOU OR GETS YOU OUT OF BED EACH DAY? The gift of the day---to love the people in my life, to make a difference in some way, and to continue to build a business that now includes both of my sons. KNOWING WHAT YOU KNOW NOW, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUR YOUNGER SELF? Be present in every moment and spend more of those moments with the people you love the most. WHO INSPIRES YOU AND WHY? My late husband because he always believed that the right time for anything is right now---hence the question: “what are you waiting for?” WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO FIND PEACE AND POSITIVITY DURING THE COVID-19 QUARANTINE? Since Orange Theory is temporarily closed, my morning routine is meditation and yoga to calm my mind and body, and prepare myself for the day.
SARAH HURWIT Z ROBE Y CO-OWNER OF COLONIAL JEWELERS WHAT’S THE MOST SPONTANEOUS THING YOU’VE EVER DONE? My sister and I booked a trip to Spain-Israel-Amsterdam with only a month or so notice. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR CAREER? Working with my family, as well as being a part of such a long-standing Frederick business. WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED? “Double-check your math,” my mom said, and I use it every single day! WHAT DRIVES YOU OR GETS YOU OUT OF BED EACH DAY? My earlyriser kids (kidding!) but I love to get up and get going on the day ahead. WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO FIND PEACE AND POSITIVITY DURING THE COVID-19 QUARANTINE? I’m trying to have gratitude for the extra time I have with my young boys. I am seeking to be grateful for not being as “busy” as I was before this. 24
Frederick Lifestyle | May 2020
K E L LY S C H U L Z SECRETARY OF THE MARYLAND DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE WHAT WAS A CHALLENGE YOU HAD TO OVERCOME IN YOUR LIFE? The professional challenge was getting started later in life, but I will never regret my decision to stay home and raise my two boys. WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED? When I asked my youngest son about whether I should run for office, he said, “If not you, who? If not now, when?” WHO INSPIRES YOU AND WHY? My two boys have always been my inspiration and as they have grown into men, I see them inspiring others as well. WHAT MESSAGE OF HOPE DO YOU WANT TO GIVE OUR READERS DURING THE CHALLENGING DAYS OF THE VIRUS? As Marylanders begin to adjust to a new normal, the true nature of who we are becomes clear. We have already seen individuals, businesses, faith leaders and communities step forward to provide necessary supplies, funding, and overall support to our neighbors, and I have no doubt that over time, this will continue to grow.

STEPPING INTO THE FUTURE WITH THOMAS SCOTT SALON AND SPA

Frederick Lifestyle | May 2020
“WE LIKE BIG HAIR! I TRY TO KEEP IT BIG, BUT I LIKE IT A BIT MESSY,” SAYS MARY JANE, OWNER OF THOMAS SCOTT SALON AND SPA, WITH HER ADORABLY TASSELED YET STYLED ‘DO.’ The room is full of laughter and Gwen Zimmerman, her daughter-in-law, is in agreement. It’s a revelation that is endearing to us 80’s fans, who are fond of the styling known for curls teased to heavenly heights. Her curls and their height may be tamed a bit, but Thomas Scott Salon and Spa owner, Mary Jane Tabler remains perfectly in style! Getting to know more about this dynamic woman, you see that behind her gentle southern ways, lies the grit that it takes to be at the helm of her salon in an ever-changing and demanding industry. “I had the privilege of being a stay at home mom for 11 years, but I had always wanted to be a hairdresser. I always loved this industry! I used to make my sister sit and let me do her hair; she had such thick, pretty hair!” Mary Jane says. Soon after attaining her goal of becoming a hairstylist, she took steps to open her salon, Thomas Scott Salon and Spa. Mary Jane is so proud of the salon she founded 36 years ago. Always seeking to grow and evolve with changing times, Thomas Scott Salon and Spa has kept up with the latest styles and innovations in hair care. “We’ve tried to keep ahead of the curve,” Mary Jane says of the business, “not only with our move, but with our emphasis on education and hair trends, and with technology in the salon. One reason I have lasted in the business is because we try to be very progressive. We went with computerized systems early on. It demanded a lot of attention to stay
products that have an emphasis on giving back. We’re fea-
up to date. I loved being behind the chair but to grow the
turing Farmhouse Fresh, a skincare line that has a passion
business like we did, I couldn’t do both.”
for rescuing, safe relocation, and loving care of forgotten,
Growing and changing, both Mary Jane and Gwen believe
neglected, and abused animals. Another brand we will feature,
that the best business move is to relocate the salon from
Klass Cosmetics, is a company we are so excited about. With
their Baughmans Lane location to their new space at the
Klass, they have developed a program called Klass Act. For
Frederick Shopping Center. The new location is designed
each product that is purchased, they will donate a product to
with an industrial flair and high ceilings. They consulted with
an organization of our choosing that helps women. Last year,
an architect and Mary Jane and Gwen worked to be sure
we designated Heartly House, and Klass Act donated over
that everything needed for success was integrated into the
$2,000 worth of cosmetics. They were so excited to receive
design. Gwen says, “One thing that has changed is we are
these luxury products. Any product we bring into the space
going with a heavy retail presence with natural and organic
is here for a reason.”

Along with Mary Jane at the helm, she has had as many as four other family members as part of the business. She says, “Thank God I have good people around me. I’ve always had a lot of family that has supported me—my daughter, Janie, and granddaughter, Sarah, work here. My sister worked as buying manager, but she just retired. Gwen was an oncology nurse and has been working here for about three years as a consultant. She’s been such a help with the business and the move.”
Gwen says she does miss her former job as an oncology nurse, but the drive became too much, and that’s how Mary Jane got her! “I do anything that needs to be done. I have been doing all social media, maintaining the website, public relations, and marketing by attending all the community events, and working on the culture in the salon.” Mary Jane says, “Gwen is on the leadership team and has organized team building events like rock painting and a retreat. I love doing all the things that Gwen does. It’s fun for me to go with her to all the mixers like Rotary and Chamber. We look to find ways to participate in giving back to the community.” Mary Jane concludes with, “We’ve had so many challenges in getting into our new place but we are so excited. Along with the other stores, restaurants, and a grocery store, it’s a really great location and it’s got everything. We needed a change, and this is just the start of our new adventure.” ThomasScottSalons.com

PACK YOUR SMALL SPACES WITH A BIG PUNCH BY STARTING YOUR OWN CONTAINER GARDEN
IT MAY BE THAT YOU DON’T HAVE MUCH SPACE TO WORK WITH; MAYBE YOU ARE ALWAYS ON-THE-MOVE; OR, MAYBE YOU JUST SIMPLY WANT SOME GREENERY TO ADD A LITTLE BIT OF COLOR TO YOUR SPACE. It doesn’t matter what your reason may be. Container gardening—the practice of growing plants exclusively in containers rather than in the ground—is a great way to pack some punch into a small (or portable!) space.
+
Save some space by building your garden vertically instead of horizontally. If you’re running out of room indoors, try placing your pots on an old bookshelf or baker’s rack.
