GIVING BACK

TRANSFORM YOUR HOME GIVING NEW MEANING TO SPRING CLEANING

12

Greenwich Lifestyle | March 2020

WITH DEEP ROOTS IN HISTORY AND RELIGION, THE PRACTICE OF SPRING CLEANING HAS BECOME AN AMERICAN STAPLE. Spring Cleaning is the practice of thoroughly cleaning the house. Many times this involves getting rid of unwanted objects and reorganizing the home. HAVEN, a Greenwich-based organization company, developed a three-step approach to decluttering your home. Edit your possessions, organize your belongings, and style your space. Seems simple right? But of course, it’s always easier said than done. HAVEN founders Corrie Jackson and Jennifer Bakker are sharing their spring cleaning tips with you! Fate brought these high school besties from the U.K. to Greenwich. After multiples moves for each of them they settled in Greenwich and realized the importance of treating a home like a haven. They decided to start HAVEN to help families transform their homes.

GL: HOW DID YOU TWO MEET? We’ve been best friends since high school back in the UK! GL: WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START HAVEN? We honed our nerdy organizational skills in a variety of living spaces, and numerous international moves taught us the value of a streamlined home. The stars aligned when we both moved to Greenwich and launched our luxury home organizing company at the end of last year. GL: WHAT IS THE MISSION OF YOUR BRAND? We want to redefine the way you organize. We believe everyone deserves a place to recharge, retreat and relax. One of our best-kept secrets? A home that looks beautiful is more likely to stay that way. Which is why we developed a three-step approach to decluttering: edit, organize, style. Our personalized systems are so effective we joke HAVEN is your home’s juice cleanse, 12-hour sleep and reset button rolled into one!

GIVING BACK (CONTINUED)

GL: WHAT ARE YOUR TOP 3 TIPS FOR SPRING CLEANING?

TIP #1

Change the language. Living an organized life is 100% achievable with the right system in place. The key is to identify your organizing style and build a system around it. Break it down into manageable goals. Rather than ‘I want to organize my house’, which feels vague and unwieldy, switch it to: ‘I will create a system that makes my pantry work’. Or ‘I will create the space my entryway needs to function’.

TIP #2

Prioritize your entryway. The way you enter your home sets the tone for the rest of the house. If your entryway is a car-crash of coats, shoes, bags and other paraphernalia, then shoot this zone to the top of your todo list. Short on space? Your system could be as simple as a standalone coat rack or hooks behind a door. Got drawers? Invest in some dividers. Finally, adopt our ‘60-second rule’. When you arrive home, spend 60 seconds putting things in their place. Not only does it clear your head but it makes it easier to leave the house, too.

TIP #3

Master the small stuff. Stray objects (aka the declutterer’s nemeses): pens, phone chargers, bills, hairbands etc. Find a spot for everything. If it doesn’t have a designated place, it doesn’t stay (ruthless? Us?)

As we shed our winter layers, it’s also important to talk about exfoliating our skin to uncover fresh new skin. While moisturizing yourself from head to toe can help get rid of dry winter skin, sometimes your body just needs to start from scratch. Proper exfoliation removes dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. It allows for products to penetrate deeper and work more effectively and also serves to unclog pores. The JHouse offers a Unzented Body Scrub by Zents that mixes sugar and salt together to exfoliate the skin to perfection with a rich infusion of shea butter and coconut oil that soothes and protects the skin from the elements. In the past few years, wellness and self care have become very important topics. Skincare has become the new makeup, and the conversation has been all about how to take care of your skin. So of course we had to take a moment to talk about facials. Facials help detoxify your skin, treat skin concerns, thoroughly cleanse your skin, and can also help prevent aging. Nothing says spring quite like a fresh, dewy face. The HydraFacial MD provides cleansing, exfoliation, and extractions while simultaneously hydrating the skin using proprietary serums filled with antioxidants, peptides and hyaluronic acid. Clients have reported visibly softer, smoother, and brighter skin! The JHouse Spa is a relaxing environment where you can focus on you. Visit jhousespa.com and book your visit!

My clients are more open to going custom. Pushing the boundaries of the basic shaker cabinetry and doing something more interesting i.e., adding inset screens, or interesting panel design, etc. I’m fortunate to work with some very talented woodworkers and craftsmen in the area. I often see a piece of furniture for inspiration and work with my woodworker to customize specifically for my client. WHEN BUYING A NEW HOME, AND A HOUSEWARMING IS PROBABLY THE LAST! Once you’ve gotten to the end of the list, it’s finally time to start thinking about thinking about inviting your friends over to celebrate this next step in your life. Here are a few tips on how to throw the perfect housewarming party!

FOOD & WINE (CONTINUED)

1. Bar Every great party starts with a great drink! Make sure the bar is set up in a convenient location. Set up glasses, napkins, wine, mixers, and of course the hard liquor. If you really want to be fancy, opt for a signature cocktail that you can batch mix before the guest arrive. We love this recipe for Grapefruit Thyme Fizz, which is perfect for a spring housewarming party.

GRAPEFRUIT THYME FIZZ INGREDIENTS + 1 1/2 cups of grapefruit juice + 1 cup sparkling water

+ 2 ounces of vodka + fresh grapefruit and thyme sprigs for garnish

+ 1 cup ice

Greenwich Lifestyle | March 2020

2. Food Keep the food simple. Fruit, cheese, and veggie platters are a great way to go. A grazing board is the perfect centerpiece for a party and will keep your guests full throughout the night. In the past year, grazing boards have become the must-have for any party. Arrange your favorite cheeses, meets, bread, and more on a large cutting board, and you’ll be set for the night.

3. Tour Plan a tour once everyone arrives so you don’t end up spending the entire night walking around the house. Don’t worry too much about unpacked boxes; it’s part of the “just moved in” charm!

4. Music The right playlist can make or break a party. Luckily Spotify is packed with housewarming party playlists for you to choose from. Add or take away songs and keep the music going on in the background throughout the night.

5. Games Games always add a fun element to a party. You can set up cards and board games for guests to enjoy on their own or organize trivia, pictionary, etc for the whole group!

CULINARY CRE ATIONS (CONTINUED)

If you have a babysitter who likes to cook, you could set out the instructions and ingredients for them to have something fun to do with your kids—it beats ordering pizza again!

ingredients + Prep

Depending on what you order, you may need some of your own supplies. When you select your meals, think about what you will need to cook the food in and if any other kitchen utensils would be helpful. Have them ready to go so you don’t have to make any last-minute trips to the store, defeating the purpose of getting your box delivered! Look over the prep times and cook times to ensure you won’t be rushed, and have fun! If the meals are foods you would enjoy reheated, you could do all of your cooking the day you get the box to meal prep for your week, or you can just store the ingredients to the other meals in your fridge and cook them throughout the week.

cooking

If you’re a little less-experienced in the kitchen, meal kits are great for learning! Read the instructions carefully before you get started so you don’t feel frazzled while the heat is up high, and take your time. Gobble is great for beginners because all of the meals are prepped for you and can be cooked in 15 minutes with just one skillet. If you want to learn how to do more plant-based cooking for your health and the environment, Purple Carrot makes it easy to enjoy delicious meals and not even miss the meat. If you are a more seasoned chef, feel free to take your own spin on the recipes and add some extra flavor or swap out ingredients to make it perfect for your palate. If you know what you want to make and have your own recipes already,

let’s eat!

This is the really fun part! It’s time to start taste-testing. Make a note tab in your phone for tracking what you love and what isn’t your favorite. That way, when it’s time to select more meals, you know what you have tried and what you absolutely have to try again. Don’t forget to ask your family what was a hit and a miss.
