The Art That Inspires Us FEBRUARY IS OUR MONTH OF ART—MAKING, COLLECTING, ADMIRING AND LEARNING. We love art because it gives us a glimpse of someone’s heart, the part of them we don’t see on the surface. We are all drawn to art in different ways. We like to look at and listen to art that makes us feel something, art that resonates with us. Through art, we learn about ourselves.

Three years after (Arthur) Jones started testing the MedX lumbar extension machine at the University of Florida, the company received the FDA’s approval . . . Within months, it was evident that MedX was effective. Anywhere that a MedX lumbar extension machine was up and running, spine surgeons complained bitterly that their surgery volume was declining.

catastrophe by creating a visual record of their home and all possessions. Losing a home to a fire, storm, or any disaster is devastating financially and emotionally. When making an insurance claim, complete documentation is key to quickly rebuilding your life. To ensure an adequate settlement, VHI documents the complete contents, fixtures, and finishes of a home. They capture the entire home, including furniture, artwork, jewelry, firearms, and inside closets and cupboards, to record your belongings in place. With comprehensive proof of possessions, settlements take less time and reflect the property’s true value. “Because creating a home inventory is a daunting task, only about half of homeowners have one,” says VHI Founder, Ken Aaron, “and most are incomplete or out of date.” Making an accurate inventory after a disaster is extremely difficult, if not impossible.

Back home in Central Oregon, he can be seen having fun on Mount Bachelor or doing some morning laps on Tumalo Mountain. For him, the training is year round, which makes Bend the perfect home. In the off-season, he spends time riding the mountain bike trails and completing “living room workouts.” But mostly, Sage just wants to ski. “Each season I get in a good amount of skiing for myself, then when it comes time to film, I’m feeling confident, strong, and fine to be cruising at the slower pace of production,” says Sage.

Cattabriga-Alosa’s love for the natural world is on full display in his 2018 film Elemental. The short film was his chance to share his love for the natural elements as it showcases his time skiing high on the peaks and mountain biking down on the trails. “I had been wanting to make a combination ski and bike film for over ten years,” explains Sage. “My wife Annie really helped put things together, as I wanted the film to have meaning and a greater message.” While Sage and Annie, with whom he met and fell in love at Burning Man, occasionally ski and mountain bike together, their real connection is through the artistic endeavors of visual art projects, music collaborations, and farming their three acres of land alongside their young twins. “I’ve won a bunch of video awards, but it’s all really just the fact that I found a way to do what I love for so long that I’m most proud of,” says Sage.

THE CURVE OF SCOLIOSIS The spine has the important job of providing structural support and balance to the body. Most of us have a spine that is relatively straight, however, some have an abnormal sideways curve, called scoliosis. Each year approximately three million new cases are diagnosed in the US. While only a small percentage of people with scoliosis require treatment, some experience debilitating symptoms such as low back pain, pain between the shoulder blades that worsens with prolonged standing or sitting, and difficulty breathing with exertion. Some may also demonstrate: • • • •

Uneven shoulders (one shoulder lower) Pelvic asymmetry (waste height is uneven) Elevated rib cage Shoulder blades may be uneven

The good news, according to Bend scoliosis expert, Marcus Ainsworth, PT, DPT, is that successful management of the symptoms associated with scoliosis is possible. “Many people who seek medical treatment for their scoliosis symptoms are told that nothing can help them except exercise,” said Ainsworth. “While I agree that exercise is beneficial, patients are often not told what specific exercises to do to help them. General core strengthening is beneficial but doesn’t address muscular asymmetries and curvature that may be influencing a person’s symptoms. ” There are three primary types of scoliosis: 1.

Idiopathic scoliosis - This is the most common form of scoliosis and makes up about 65% of the cases. The cause is unknown and is most common in adolescents.

2.

Congenital - This form of scoliosis is present at birth and makes up about 15% of cases.

3.

Neuromuscular - This form is caused by alterations in muscle control, paralysis, weakness or contractions as seen in people

with cerebral palsy or spina bifida. The degree of curvature can be measured by taking an x-ray of your spine. •

Curves 0-25 degrees may be conservatively with physical therapy.

treated

•

Curves 25-40 degrees may be managed by your physician with the use of body jackets or braces.

•

Curves beyond 40 degrees may require surgery because they often worsen with time.

Depending on the type of scoliosis and the degree of curvature, treatment options, will vary. Physical therapy can be very effective at treating the pain associated with rotational asymmetries of the trunk caused by scoliosis. In his Bend practice, Ainsworth uses Postural Restoration Institute (PRI) techniques to neutralize the asymmetries that often cause pain. PRI techniques strengthen the muscle groups that oppose the curve to counter the rotation of the spine and promote symmetry. It also helps stop further abnormal muscle tone development, promotes neutrality in the pelvis, and equalizes stance or weight distribution while standing. The rib cage often demonstrates asymmetries, which can make breathing more challenging. To compensate for this asymmetry, people overuse the muscles in the neck and back, which can lead to neck and back pain with time. Manual therapy techniques used in physical therapy aim to improve rib cage expansion on one side to promote more symmetrical breathing patterns. When exercises are properly executed the individual often experiences early decreases in pain. While the treatment does not claim to reverse the curvature, the success rate of decreasing pain and improving function is high. If you are concerned about the pain associated with scoliosis, schedule an evaluation to better understand how physical therapy may help you.

JEFF AND HEATHER THOMPSON GLASSBLOWING IS NOT ONLY AN ANCIENT ART FORM; THIS UNIQUE MEDIUM HAS TRANSFORMED FROM FACTORY FUNCTIONALITY OBJECTS TO ONE OF A KIND SCULPTURES, LIGHT FIXTURES AND WALL ART. Jeff and Heather Thompson’s Bend workshop functions in the tradition of the “studio glass movement” that emerged in the 60s. Using three primary furnaces: the crucible, glory and kiln along with a five-foot, steel pipe that gathers the molten glass from the furnaces — the process of shaping glass takes extreme concentration and time. The Thompson’s use their knowledge, experience and non-verbal communication (they are married) to create their unique art. Glassblowing has been described as “a dance” of movement and coordination, combining colors, shapes and unique features for each piece. With several installations both locally and nationally, the Thompsons draw inspiration from both nature and the alchemy of bringing science and art together. “The yin and yang of the pure natural environment is a process that inspires me,” says Heather. “The flow of the glass and heat mixed with color intrigues me and it feels like I’m playing with the stars. Nature, the universe, light and colors are my inspiration,” she adds. The Thompson’s Studio Art includes blown, sculpted and solid pieces and the pair are currently experimenting with forged and fabricated steel components, wall lighting features and creating custom glass colors which is rarely done in the glassblowing world. Embracing the entrepreneurial and artistic spirit of Central Oregon, The Thompson’s art is a blend of traditional, contemporary and custom works. “The desire to create is a part of my perARTICLE JULIE E. ROCHELLE ROSE-SCHUELER If there was ever an artist that understands her craft piece by piece, it’s Rochelle Rose-Schueler. With her Wild Rose Mosaics, "Splash," mosaic of hotel room keys.

Rochelle starts with small individual shards of glass or tile on a macro level to build public art, and functional, architectural and sculptural mosaics. With an early interest in architecture and alternative energy, she always had a passion for the natural world. Rochelle brings her understanding of a wide range of arts and craft to her work. Her experience with screen-printing, tie-dye, homebuilding, welding, metal arts and ceramics led her to a 2012 discovery of the language of mosaic. “My contemporary mosaic work is inspired by nature, mathematics, and engineering structure and is a continuous process of exploring and refining a personal abstract language,” she says. She has traveled to work on commissioned and public art projects in New Orleans, San Francisco, and Mexico. GIVING BACK

OREGON’S GIFT TO C U LT U R E OREGON OFFERS ONE OF THE NATION’S MOST UNIQUE TAX CREDITS, BUT WHILE IT’S ONE OF THE MOST EFFECTIVE FORMS OF ENGAGEMENT IN ARTS AND CULTURE IN THE STATE, STILL MANY PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT IT. Oregon’s Cultural Tax Credit both reduces what an income-tax paying Oregonian owes to the state, while also supporting both arts and culture activities stretching from the coast to urban centers and to the high desert. The tax credit was extended by policymakers for six more years, until 2026, thanks to lobbying by the Cultural Advocacy Coalition, one of the only statewide advocacy groups, and with leadership by the Oregon Cultural Trust, which was established by the Oregon Legislature as a funding engine

Up to 60 percent of the funds raised through the tax credit are distributed to the Cultural Trust’s statewide partners, 45 county and tribal cultural coalitions and direct to organizations through competitive grants. The remaining amount is invested in a permanent fund through the Cultural Trust.

old WE’RE SHARING TIPS, TRICKS + UNIQUE WAYS TO INCORPORATE YOUR ANTIQUE ITEMS INTO YOUR HOME

ANTIQUES ARE MAKING A COMEBACK. Whether you’re an antique aficionada, a thrifty thrifter or new to the whole concept of vintage revival; whether it’s a hand-me-down, a thrift-store-find or just something cool you stumbled upon at an estate sale; endless opportunities exist to effortlessly incorporate retro, vintage, antique or whatever-you-want-to-call-them items into different parts of your modern home.

WHAT IT IS Antique Chest STYLE IT Coffee Table PRO TIP Revive solid-wood pieces with little actual value by refinishing the wood to your liking.

Don’t be afraid to do something different, and don’t take things too seriously. If the piece you’re working with doesn’t have any real value, you have so many options to liven it up, including paint, finish and hardware.

Make your piece multi-purpose by turning the lid into a game table or by storing your cocktail accessories inside for an easy-access mini bar!

Spread the vintage love. Use antiques strategically and as accent pieces to keep your overall aesthetic from coming off as too dated.

Repurpose old tins, mugs, teacups or storage containers into succulent gardens. Because succulents have shallow root systems, they can survive (and thrive!) in smaller spaces.

STYLE IT

tips Create the most impact by displaying (not hiding!) items that carry the best stories or sentimental value. We love the use of incorporating these smaller figurines as bookends and paperweights.

Make it art. Don’t be afraid to display unique pieces as wall art. Consider creating a gallery wall that mixes vintage photographs, prints, mirrors and china.

ENHANCE LIFE BY LEARNING SOMETHING NEW AND CREATIVE 34

Bend Lifestyle | February 2020

IF THIS YEAR FINDS YOU COLORING WITHIN THE LINES OF YOUR CREATIVE LIFE, THERE ARE A MULTITUDE OF WAYS TO BREAK OUT IN A RAINBOW OF EXPRESSION. Studies of health have linked education to living longer, and by extension, the engagement and fulfillment we get when trying new things helps keep the brain limber. In his formative work, Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience, psychologist Mihaly Csíkszentmihályi outlined the theory that people are happiest when they are in flow—a state of concentration or complete absorption with the activity at hand and the situation. Craft books for beginners teach both ancient and quirky arts. Here are a few of our favorites to help you find new ways to go with the “flow.”

Macramé, Fanny Zedenius. With a refreshing twist on a 1970’s craft, this book teaches the essentials of macramé—with a glossary, tips and fully-illustrated instructions for 22 projects from plant hangers to wall hangings. Amazing Origami, Tuttle Publishers. Using the simplest of materials, a single piece of paper, origami is a relaxing way to challenge the mind while creating harmonious designs. Begin with a kit that gives step-by-step instructions, diagrams and papers. Pure Soapmaking, Anne-Marie Faiola. A collection of 32 recipes for creating all-natural soaps in a home kitchen. The cold-process of soapmaking combines skin-nourishing ingredients with natural infusions, and essential oils to create unique and luxurious blends. Botanical Inks, Babs Behan. Learn how to direct-transfer plant dyes and their herbal qualities into cloth using simple kitchen equipment.

of natural, non-toxic dyes and how to create different effects with eco-printing techniques.
