WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT RIDING AND COMPETING?
Whether I’m simply spending practice time at the barn or jumping 1.40 meters at the national championships, I treasure every minute of it! My parents have always been my number one supporters, having sacrificed and worked hard to help me achieve my goals. So, I guess my favorite part is when they can witness these events in person and share these times together. WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST CHALLENGING ASPECT OF BEING AN EQUESTRIAN? I think this would involve learning to balance my nerves while maintaining a calm, laser-like focus…all the while having FUN in the process! A trainer once told me, “If you aren’t nervous, then you’re crazy!” WHAT HAS IT BEEN LIKE TO COMPETE ON BAYLOR’S EQUESTRIAN TEAM? I couldn’t be happier. Becoming a student-athlete on Baylor’s equestrian team has been a life-changing experience. Equestrian is primarily an individualistic sport, so now, having the opportunity to become part of a collegiate competition team has taught me the value of teamwork and togetherness. Our coaches are very supportive and help us achieve a good balance of athletics and education. WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES FOR THE FUTURE? I really want our Baylor team to win a National Championship! Being part of a championship team would be an incredible experience. I’d like to get my MBA, and then join the business world…and of course, find time to show more amazing horses in the amateur jumping circuit!

“We feed them 60 pounds of sunflower and wild bird seeds a week,” Bill says. “We also have been feeding them leftover desserts for the last 31 years. And for you peacock nutritionists that keep telling me not to feed the peacocks bread and pastries, well, they love my pecan brownies, my cherry apple pies, my cherry cranberry pecan muffins, banana pecan pancakes, my German chocolate cake and my peach bread pudding.” In addition, Bill says, the peacocks have impeccable taste in music. “This morning 18 peacocks showed up. Most of them are still hanging around. I’m playing their favorite music. They also like salsa music,” he says. One of the most interesting times of year is peacock mating season, which begins in January and ends in May. During this time, the peacocks spread their tail feathers and strut around the community in hopes of attracting a mate. 20

fossil rim IF AN AFRICAN SAFARI ISN’T A PRACTICAL OPTION THIS YEAR, BUT YOUR FAMILY IS EAGER TO EMBARK ON A JUMANJI-LIKE ADVENTURE, FOSSIL RIM WILDLIFE CENTER IS THE PERFECT DESTINATION. “Fossil Rim is home to approximately 1,100 animals spanning more than 50 species on 1,800 acres,” says Marketing Associate Tye Chandler. Located near Glen Rose, Fossil Rim is not a zoo. It is a nonprofit organization seeking to save species by utilizing its vast land as a breeding facility. The many animals housed there have plenty of space to roam - much like their natural habitats. And visitors are able to observe and learn from the animals as they quietly explore the park. “This greater room to roam allows for herds to live together and exhibit natural behaviors. Instead of the animals being in the enclosures that you might find at a zoo, it is often a role reversal at Fossil Rim, as people are in the enclosure that is their own vehicle or they are within our guided tour vehicles,” Tye says. The animals that live in Fossil Rim’s Main Pasture have 420 acres to themselves. Giraffes and Hartmann’s mountain zebras reside in the Game Preserve, which is 266 acres. Guest vehicles travel through a total of four pastures. Some animals are more discreetly located. “We have a part of the facility called the Jim Jackson Intensive Management Area, where wolves, black rhinos, and other animals live,” Tye says. “It can only be visited by guided tour and is quieter and more secluded for animals that may need the extra privacy.”

TRAVEL DESTINATION (CONTINUED)
Families can enjoy self-guided tours in the comfort of their own vehicles or guided tours led by Fossil Rim employees. Visit FossilRim.org for information on which tours and amenities are being offered at the time of your visit. Driving through Fossil Rim, visitors can observe and photograph several different species of animals – many of which they may have never observed in person – including wildebeest, giraffes, scimitar-horned oryx, blackbuck, addax, Hartmann’s mountain zebras, cheetahs and sable antelope – just to name a few. Most animals, with the exception of white rhinos and cheetahs, can be given feed pellets provided by Fossil Rim. “I always recommend arriving as close to our 8:30 a.m. opening as possible,” Tye says. If guided tours are available, he highly recommends going that route. “Guided tours are better than visiting in your own vehicle because you learn more, get more animal food, can take some routes guest vehicles cannot go, and you can ask questions if you have them along the way.” As a nonprofit organization, Fossil Rim depends on visitors, members, donors, volunteers and corporate sponsors to continue its conservation efforts. “Commitment is the courage to change, and the teaching staff at Bridlewood exhibited our desire to put student needs above all else by accomplishing this monumental feat,” Mrs. Block says. “I am so incredibly proud to serve alongside our dedicated teachers. Commitment speaks ‘yes’ over and over and there is no room for ‘no.’” Though

focused this school-year, Mrs. Block says Bridlewood will maintain a nurturing, wellrounded learning environment. “Our families can take comfort in the fact we will sustain our family atmosphere centered around our desire to teach the whole child,” she says. “We will not waiver on our commitment to meeting every child’s academic, social and emotional needs.” Bridlewood is the fourth STEM campus to open in the district. Other locations include Donald Elementary, Valley Ridge Elementary and Polser Elementary. Next year Josey Lane will open its STEM campus. Dr. Greene says LISD hopes to offer even more STEM opportunities throughout the district in the future. “The vision is for all elementary schools in the district to offer some form of a STEM foundation either through science classes, math classes or weekly enrichment in engineering,” he says. Though all STEM campuses in LISD are currently at the elementary level, Dr. Greene says the school system will broaden STEM offerings in 2021. “To continue learning from the elementary to middle school level, some middle school locations will begin to incorporate STEM in 2021,” he says. “At the high school level, learning for students becomes more specialized and tailored toward student interest. All five high schools already offer a variety of STEM related courses. Additionally, the district has two career centers: Technology, Exploration & Career Center East (TECC-East) and Technology, Exploration & Career Center West (TECCWest). These locations provide additional learning in specialized STEM fields.” For more information about LISD’s STEM learning, visit LISD.net. 28

M AT E R I A L S
PIÑLLAMA
+ Cardboard + White crepe paper + Construction paper + Glue + Scissors + Beads, yarn, pom poms, etc.
DIRECTIONS 1. Take your cardboard and cut two pieces into the shape of a llama (we found a stencil online). Then, cut strips of cardboard the depth you want your llama to be. You’ll connect these to either side of the llama cutouts to enclose your piñata. 2. Glue your strip of cardboard all along the edge of one side of your llama, then glue to the other side. (Be sure to leave a hole you can close up later so you can fill it with your favorite candy!) 3. Starting at the neck, cover the front, back and sides of your llama with white crepe paper, cutting a slit every half inch or so to create the traditional piñata look. 4. Cover all remaining sides of the neck and head with white construction paper, cut to fit your design. 5. Using construction paper, beads, pom poms, tassels, buttons, etc., add some flair to the rest of your llama! Bonus points for incorporating different shapes and textures into your final product.

RENOVATE & REFINE
A COZY SPACE TENTS AND FORTS PROVIDE HOURS OF ENTERTAINMENT AND A RESPITE FROM THE BUSY WORLD ARTICLE STEPHANIE HASBROUCK PHOTOGRAPHY CONTRIBUTED
I REMEMBER AS A CHILD SPENDING HOURS UPON HOURS BUILDING FORTS WITH MY BIG SISTER. We’d gather every throw blanket and quilt from the house and drape it over furniture, and just when we’d created most solid, beautiful fort, it would be dinnertime, and we’d have to tear down our impressive creation. Fast forward a couple of decades, and our children acquired the same passion for fort-building. When he was little, my youngest son would spend hours creating the perfect structure of pillows and blankets and chairs. It was a sight to behold. Luckily nowadays there are many beautiful tent options available online. Less assembly (and fewer pillows and blankets) required! Children can have a permanent tiny retreat in their own room. Forts allow kiddos to retreat and take a moment for themselves to read a book or visit with their toys or pet. It’s the perfect space for decompressing in an often over-scheduled world. 34

The Forbes “Best-in-State Wealth Advisors” ranking was developed by SHOOK Research and is based on in-person and telephone due diligence meetings to evaluate each advisor qualitatively, a major component of a ranking algorithm that includes: client retention, industry experience, review of compliance records, firm nominations; and quantitative criteria, including: assets under management and revenue generated for their firms. Investment performance is not a criterion because client objectives and risk tolerances vary, and advisors rarely have audited performance reports. Rankings are based on the opinions of SHOOK Research, LLC and not indicative of future performance or representative of any one client’s experience. The Barron’s “Top 1,200 Financial Advisors” ranking considered advisors with a minimum of seven years financial services experience and have been employed at their current firm for at least one year. This is a list of the top advisors in each state, with the number of ranking spots determined by each state’s population and wealth. Other quantitative and qualitative measures include assets under management, revenues generated by advisors for their firms, and the quality of the advisors’ practices, regulatory records, internal company documents, and 100-plus points of data provided by the advisors themselves.
