Tito's

WHAT POLO IN THE PINES MEANS TO US: Tito’s Handmade Vodka has been with Polo in the Pines since the very beginning in 2012! We knew from the beginning what a fabulous occasion it would be to get together and support the amazing things that Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta does. Tito’s Handmade Vodka was started by a man named Tito Beveridge in Austin, TX in 1997. In fact, he created the first legal distillery in Texas. Since the start of Tito’s, he has always been very involved in giving back to the community. As we have grown as a company, he has made that a point for all employees to take that love for giving back and run with it. Just in Georgia, we will support over 300 charities this year alone. One of our mottos at Tito’s is “Spread the Love. Make the World a Better Place.” Tito’s Handmade Vodka 1406 Smith Rd, Austin, TX TitosVodka.com

THE GOOD WORK AT AFLAC CANCER AND BLOOD DISORDERS CENTER AT CHILDREN’S HEALTHCARE OF ATLANTA

ARTICLE ANGIE DUPREY | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

ACH YEAR, MORE THAN 16,000 CHILDREN WILL RECEIVE A NEW CANCER DIAGNOSIS. Last year alone 456 parents walked through the doors of the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and heard the devastating words, “your child has cancer.” That’s more than one family per day. In recent years the Aflac Cancer Center has seen exponential growth in patient volumes, caring for more children with cancer and blood disorders than any other program in the country. This large volume allows them to evaluate each child and learn from each patient seen. And because of the

large number of children cared for here in Atlanta, the Aflac Cancer Center is in the top two percent of institutions for clinical trial enrollment. So, what does this mean? This means these children have access to the most novel treatment

options and most promising therapies for their specific needs. We learn from each of these patients and, in return, share that information with all other pediatric cancer programs across the country.

EVIS BABO D.M.D

Once again, this year the Aflac Cancer Center has been named a top pediatric cancer program by U.S. News and World Report, and is dedicated to finding new innovative treatments and conducting cutting-edge research, because every child deserves a lifetime. Children’s recognizes they cannot accomplish this alone. Children’s is both humbled and

honored to be the beneficiary of the 2019 annual fundraising efforts thru Polo in the Pines. With the wonderful and generous support to the Sharon McCollum Knight, Polo in the Pines Pediatric Cancer Research Fund at Children’s, through the Aflac Cancer Center, researchers like Dr. Tobey MacDonald and Dr. Jason Fangusaro (below) are working together to provide a better future for the patients that need them most. Children’s Aflac Neuro-Oncology program focuses on “Four pillars”—basic and translational research, innovative clinical trials, a survivor program identifying quality of life and neurocognitive outcomes, and trains the next generation of CONTINUED >

EVERY ONCE IN AWHILE YOU MEET SOMEONE THAT CHANGES YOUR LIFE FOREVER. For me, this person was Tina Fowler, founder and executive director of Polo in the Pines. Eight years ago I received a phone call from Tina after she saw an ad for an equestrian themed event I was running. She had an unbridled excite-

Polo in the Pines would truly make me a “planner with a purpose.” My new life in Atlanta was already dedicated to working with non-profit organizations but Polo in the Pines would be a new adventure for me and one that would unexpectedly fine-tune my efforts. Tina and I met that fateful day on a park bench in North Fulton County near the polo fields in Cumming. Her energy was intoxicating and I found myself swept up in her vision of a “Pretty Woman” inspired polo fundraiser that would leverage emerging brands, restaurants, wines, and spirits all for a greater good. And as we all know, when we gather to support those in need, the giving is indeed great. Our inspiring friendship and Polo in the Pines were born. There have been so many personal friends in Atlanta who have supported my efforts over the years and incredible partnerships have fueled my work with Polo in the Pines. This year, Tina and I are hoping our efforts and the efforts of

new ideas and opportunities for Polo in the Pines. The event has grown over the years. This now two-day event is comprised of The Legacy Luncheon on Saturday and the Atlanta Polo Brunch Festival on Sunday. They are two of my favorite events on the Atlanta social calendar. We have harnessed so much good will and put it under it under one giant tent. You can feel the love and the intention as our friends and guests gather. Our friends and our guests have an amazing time and there is something to be said about “stomping the divots” with a glass of bubbles in early October in Atlanta. Won’t you join Tina Fowler and me on October 5 and 6? I can promise you that we will have a wonderful time, I am planning on it!

ARTICLE SUE G. COLLINS PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED “THE NEXT BEST THING TO A HAT IS A HALO! If you’re not wearing a halo, you’d better be wearing a hat!” Illona Cardona wears both. Illona is the creator and owner of the A Tisket A Tasket Hat Shops in north Atlanta. This month, she will be helping women chose just the right hat for Polo in the Pines, October 5 and 6, supporting a 7-year mission to fund pediatric cancer research and promote awareness and family support at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. “I met Tina (Fowler, founder of Polo in the Pines) a few years back at the Atlanta Steeplechase in Rome. She told me about her Mom and

46

how she was going to continue her philanthropy with Polo in the Pines,” says Illona, pictured here. “Tina is such a lovely person, I do what we could to assist. Anytime small businesses band together, great things happen!” Illona Cardona’s dear friend and renowned milliner Frederick Jones, designed hats for Henri Bendel, SAKS and fashionable shops nationwide. Before Frederick passed away, he told Illona his only regret was never opening the hat shop they both dreamed of. A former New York clothing designer and F.I.T graduate, Illona decided it wasn’t too late to realize that dream and A Tisket A Tasket was born. We can’t wait to see what she will be wearing at Polo in the Pines!
