CLASS

OF 2020 GRAUDATES SHARE WHAT HAS MADE 2020 A YEAR TO REMEMBER

Maria Smith WHITWORTH UNIVERSITY CLASS OF 2020 #EVERYTHINGISFINE

WHAT WILL YOU REMEMBER MOST ABOUT 2020? Hard to say. At the moment, everything is cancelled, I can’t see my friends, and my life feels like it’s been put on hold, so it’s really easy to be pessimistic. But at the same time, there are so many things to look forward to, like graduation weekend being rescheduled to the fall, and beginning my career as a softball coach. It’s a lot of mixed feelings. CAMPUS MEMORY: The art building on my campus never closes, so my friend and I would pull all nighters to finish our projects and I’m talking blankets, pillows, snacks, How I Met Your Mother streaming on Hulu, the whole get-up. The best part? We’re both graduating with honors from the art program. Worth it. DESCRIBE A MOMENT OF GROWTH OR A LIFE LESSON: Being a part of the Whitworth softball team was one giant life lesson in itself. From resilience to growth, to holding each other accountable, we have all supported each other and helped each other grow into better athletes and better people. I find it fitting that we chose “respond” as this year’s motto, given that we’ve been thrown into a situation that we can either sulk about, or push through to make the best of it. 16

Bellevue Lifestyle | July 2020

Caspian Svenson BELLEVUE HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 2020 #CANCELED

WHAT WILL YOU REMEMBER MOST ABOUT 2020? I will remember all the time I have gotten to spend with my family. During quarantine, we have all been staying at home and this has led to much more time with my brothers and parents. SCHOOL MEMORY: In my freshman year biology class we had a substitute teacher for two weeks that didn’t know anything about biology, and didn’t understand how to work a Smartboard. Now whenever I watch Game of Thrones I think of this class because I watched the entire first season during this two weeks in class. WHAT IS YOUR SUPERPOWER? My superpower is the ability to sleep anywhere and anytime. DO YOU HAVE A PLAN OR A VISION FOR YOUR FUTURE? My plan for the immediate future is to attend Duke next year. When it comes to life after college, I think I will be working in the NFL as a scout with aspirations to become a general manager. DESCRIBE A MOMENT OF GROWTH OR A LIFE LESSON: I failed the first test I took in pre-calc. I’ve always been a competitive student so this really made me mad and discouraged. Mr. Gehrig was super supportive and met me nearly everyday before school to help me study and make sure that I would be ready for the next test. I ended up doing well in the class and didn’t fail another test. Taking this class helped develop my work ethic and taught me the importance of learning from failure rather than dwelling on it.

WHAT WILL YOU WILL REMEMBER MOST ABOUT 2020? Graduating in the middle of a pandemic is not something I’m going to forget! WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES OR MOTIVATES YOU? I am inspired by my parents who both work tirelessly to make their dreams come true. Their hard work and dedication to everything they put their mind to makes me want to be a better person. SCHOOL MEMORY: Going to a small school has been fun because by the end you know everyone really well. Nights like senior takeover are extra memorable because spending time with my class just means spending time with all my friends. WHAT IS YOUR SUPER POWER? My super power is always being able to find a new alpine lake to hike to! DO YOU HAVE A VISION OR PLAN FOR YOUR FUTURE? I am going to Boston College next year to study political science and pre-law. I am hoping to get my JD and be a lawyer some day. DESCRIBE A MOMENT OF GROWTH OR A LIFE LESSON: I am student body president, but getting on student government was not easy and I lost a lot in middle school before I finally got the chance to be on ASB. This experience taught me to never give up because as an 8th grader I genuinely thought where I am today was not in the cards for me, so being able to live out my dream and persevere to make it happen has had a huge impact on my life.

WHAT WILL YOU REMEMBER MOST ABOUT 2020? I will remember the struggles I have had because I can always grow from them and do way better. WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES OR MOTIVATES YOU? My positive attitude always motivates me. my passion to succeed in school and out of school. I always dream big, so my open mind and positive attitude will always motivate me. Gavin Wong ROSA PARKS ELEMENTARY FIFTH GRADE #CANCELED, #THEEND

WHAT WILL YOU REMEMBER THE MOST ABOUT 2020? I’ll probably remember this lockdown the most. Being stuck at home. Doing remote school. Not being able to see my friends. WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES OR MOTIVATES YOU? I’m motivated by the reward of free time or freedom when my school work is done. I’m inspired by Dave Faloni. He’s a Star Wars guy. He created Clone Wars. George Lucas hand picked him for the project. He directs the Mandalorian. SCHOOL MEMORY: My top 3 memories are being on crew for our school’s drama productions. This was my most fun experience! I got to do the sound board for our last production. We made all the sets and changed them out during the show. My other favorite memory was the chaotic 5th Grade Camp. It sucked, but that’s what made it fun. And this lockdown. It’s definitely memorable. Other things I remembered when my mom told me to dig deeper: earning a party one year but then a bear came onto the school playground so we had to stay inside. That was a bummer. WHAT IS YOUR SUPERPOWER? Making people laugh! Helping others with social problems. Can I say video games? DESCRIBE A MOMENT OF GROWTH OR A LIFE LESSON: I grew the most with Ms. Zink. I had her 2nd and 3rd grade. I struggled with multiplication. She taught me good tips and math clicked for me! Multiplication became a breeze! Also, learning to do the coffee grinder in hip hop. My dance teacher gave a few pointers and then I was able to ace it, it’s hard to learn from righties!

binge-worthy book club reads

WHEN I THINK OF SUMMER, I THINK OF SUNSHINE, OUTDOOR ADVENTURES, ROMANCE AND BOOKS. I recall childhood days when I would spend countless hours devouring as many books as possible, allowing myself to be transported to different worlds through the power of words. There’s really nothing like it. You dive headfirst into the author’s handiwork and hopefully come out on the other side with a new perspective on life, new knowledge of the world around you, and hopefully of yourself. Years of research from doctors and scientist shave confirmed that reading improves memory, increases brain power, and can even lower blood pressure. This is exactly why I decided it was time to get back

to my roots and start a book club last October. I was itching to get back to the place where imagination and possibility meet. Its been a game-changer so far and

TRANSPORT YOURSELF TO DIFFERENT WORLDS THROUGH THE POWER OF WORDS

I’m excited to share this summer’s top picks.

ARTICLE EARL BENJAMIN PHOTOGRAPHY PAO SANCHEZ

»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»

100 DAYS TO BRAVE BY ANNIE F. DOWNS Devotions for unlocking your most courageous self. We are living in truly uncertain times and I for one am in need of all the courage, positivity and hope I can get. Author Annie F. Downs offers all of this and more in her 100-day devotional journey toward a braver life. She uses a friend-like conversational tone to inject scriptural seeds of faith into the reader’s daily life. Not only are there affirmations of love and confidence, but also practical advice for living a fuller life. Her book allows for a daily discovery of one’s inner strength, with reminders that we all are indeed not alone.

BORN A CRIME BY TREVOR NOAH Stories from a South African childhood. I haven’t sped through a book like this one in a long while. Author Trevor Noah’s first book became an instant New York Times bestseller, as he shared intimate details of his life growing up in South Africa. He does this almost effortlessly, all while discovering what it means to be of mixed race. His naturally comical tone takes some of the sting away from many of his painful experiences. Noah was raised by a powerhouse single-mother and much of his stories are love letters to her determination and grit. He writes with the refreshing candidness of a friend sharing stories over a good meal.

UNTAMED BY GLENNON DOYLE Both an intimate memoir and a galvanizing wake-up call. Although written with a focus to help liberate women, all readers can find freedom in Glennon Doyle’s honest memoir on courageous living. Like many “good” wives and mothers, Doyle was unaware that she had somehow lost her spark in order to please society and the people around her. One person changes everything thing for her in one specific moment. This isn’t just a love story, it is a resurrection of true self and lesson in trusting the fire inside each of us.

family summer bucket list 11 FUN ACTIVITIES TO DO AS A FAMILY. BRING THE SUMMER MAGIC TO YOUR EVERY DAY! ARTICLE CANDACE OLIVER

CAN YOU ENVISION THAT PERFECT SUMMER NIGHT? The sun slowly fading turning the evening sky into a gorgeous magenta. The beautiful summer glow on tanned skin. The fun-filled day transitioning into s’mores around a campfire. Kids running around laughing, all while being surrounded by your favorite people, snuggled up to a fire. LIFE IS GOOD. #summertime There’s

something

MAGICAL

about

summertime! This is a sweet season to make those life-long memories with your family. The weight of school is lifted off of the kids and a newfound sense of freedom rings in the household. Kids spell LOVE as T-I-M-E. They want YOU! They want to spend time with you while you are fully engaged. Put your phones down, get your pens, paper and calendar out and make your families Summer Bucket List. Be sure this list comes to life! Write down which days you will do specific activities so you all have something to look

forward

to.

Remember

specific

requests get specific results. Make a decision to be intentional and present with your family this summer. #noregrets. Here are a few fun ideas to get you in the spirit of Summer! HAVE FUN with your kids. Let JOY fill your homes and hearts and let each activity you do send an intentional message and life lesson. There are a few things that happen here, kids learn how to make and implement a plan, a reward system is created with the fun follow through, independence and confidence is instilled and best of ALL, this bucket list will help bring unity and make lasting memories together. Creativity is BIRTHED! 32

1. have an ice cream party with loads of toppings Who doesn’t love an ice cream bar? Pretend like you’re on a cruise and set up your bar with ALL the goods. (Of course, customize this if you are dairy free, gluten free, etc.) Vanilla, coconut, brownie, and mint chocolate chip ice cream are always a hit…have fun with it! Berries, granola, gummy worms, cookies, whip cream and cherries on top! This one “activity” will be on repeat, I’m sure.

2. make s’mores Is it even summer if you don’t make s’mores? The classic bonfire, gooey marshmallows stuck to your fingers, melted chocolate and graham crackers. (No fire? Your stove or microwave will work too) Put all the ingredients on a platter and tell your favorite stories as you all enjoy this sweet treat.

3. have a water balloon fight No pool? No lake? No ocean? No problem! Divide friends and family into two teams. Assign laundry baskets with water balloons as bases and it’s GO time! Always remember to remind the entire family to be encouragers and team players.

4. bake cookies to share Write three families you want to bless with homemade chocolate chip cookies. Gather all the ingredients and let the kids add, mix and create so they feel included and gain confidence. While the cookies bake, write cards to the families and have fun as you deliver these fan favorite gifts. It is better to give than receive.

5. make your own otter pops A fun way to cool down on a HOT summer day. Save your family from unneeded sugar that is found in so many popsicles. Choose your favorite healthy juice, fill and freeze! (You can order the popsicle bags on Amazon. They are called Zipzicle bags)

6. make handmade cards to send to friends and family CRAFT DAY! Get stickers, glue, colored paper, glitter and all that jazz on a large table. You can use butcher paper to make it extra fun! This can be indoors or outdoors, your choice. Have your child pick 1-3 people they want to make a card for. Help them create and you lead by example making cards as well. The fun part is putting the card in an envelope and mailing it off! Aunts, grandmas and grandpas, friends and whomever you choose to send these to will save and swoon over how special they felt when retrieving the mail.

7. tie-dyed t-shirts Grab some white t-shirts that never get worn and re purpose them…OR order some fresh ones on Amazon. The best and simplest way to do this is to order a Tie Dye Kit and follow the instructions. I remember doing this at summer camps and it was always the most fun process!

8. pick berries Strawberries, Blueberries, raspberries, blackberries…you pick (no pun intended! Ha!) Mark out a day to go to a berry picking farm. Have a blast and think of the creative ways you can eat the berries. Eat them as they are…or maybe you make a jam or pie.

34

Bellevue Lifestyle | July 2020

9. go 24 hours with NO electronics This may or may not seem like a tall order for you and your family. We use the internet for EVERYTHING… think about it…when was the last time you went without your phone? Try going 24 hours without internet, radio, TV or phone. Go camping, play games, read books, TALK with your family or even complete some more items from the bucket list. Soon enough, you will wish you had these quiet moments more often.

10. run through sprinklers Simple is often times the absolute BEST, not to mention the most FUN! Get your sunscreen and bathing suits on and head straight to your front or backyard. Turn the sprinklers on and let your imagination run wild!

11. family game night After a day of fun in the sun, get all showered up and in your cozies for a FAMILY GAME NIGHT! Depending on the ages of the kids…this may look like Duck Duck Goose, Pictionary, or Texas Hold ‘Em. Make some popcorn and have your favorite beverage, these are memories that will last forever.

Narbaitz likes Riesling and fried foods or sushi, Mickel is into slabs of butter on sourdough with whatever wine is in his glass (currently Pinot Gris), Ron Lachini craves a great Barolo or Pinot Noir/Burgundy with something braised, and Huard digs a burger with Beecher’s flagship or beef short ribs with a glass of Horse Heaven Hills. These neighbors all agree that wine drinkers should trust their own palate. Narbaitz says “if you like it, its good! If you don’t, it’s not... regardless of what others may think.” Mickel cuts to the chase and advises “Drink more of what you love and less of what you dont.” The journey to becoming a winemaker includes mentors, mistakes along with meeting and learning from lots of people. It can be a bumpy ride; Huard recalls a lesson he learned early on; “At age 28 I thought I was pretty much a wine expert…. That was until my friend and teammate Drew Bledsoe put two glasses of the same wine in front of me and in front of a number of our NE Patriot teammates. I went on to describe the wines and told the group that the first glass was definitely a Cabernet and was well balanced and had a long finish. Glass 2 I said was either a merlot, or some old world wine that did not do much for my palate. Sure enough Drew revealed the brown bagged wine to the party and that both glasses were indeed the same wine. Yes I was humbled and had a long way to go with my wine knowledge. LOL.” 40

Narbaitz talks about his wine hero Robert Mondavi. “He was a visionary and pioneer who brought worldwide recognition and acclaim to the wines of Napa Valley and the United States. For Lachini, winemaking is all in the family. “My great grandparents made wine when I was a little kid and that experience along with the family meal most likely defined our transition into this industry. When I was in my mid-20’s, I was fortunate to taste four of the legendary 1961 Bordeaux first growths … had a next door neighbor who introduced me to the finer side of aged Grand Cru Burgundies and regular visits to Napa & Sonoma along with travels to Tuscany, Greece and Spain lit my fire. Our dream has always been to live our lives around our values and create a generational business.” Huard is a fan of Washington wine pioneers Paul Champoux, Norm McKibbon, Chris Camarda and Charlie Hoppes, but his ultimate hero is close to home “I have the best winemaker on the planet in Chris Peterson.” Mickel reflects on his mentor; “Bob Betz, MW, founder of Betz Family Winery is my true blueprint and one of the kindest and most genuine people you will ever meet. Having spent nearly a decade working for, and learning from, both he and his wife Cathy, I owe him my understanding for limit-pushing and ability to capture the purity of fruit that Washington State farmers work so hard to deliver. It’s thrilling to be part of a community that stretches from growers and vineyard workers all the way through to families and friends even as we are adapting and innovating new ways to connect with one another.”
