singing that heals

(EVEN DURING A FORMIDABLE PANDEMIC)

ARTICLE JULIE BROWN PATTON 12

Frisco Life | August 2020

“MAY YOUR HEART BE FILLED WITH JOY AND PEACE. MAY YOUR WAYS BE GUIDED BY STEADFAST LOVE. MAY YOU FIND STRENGTH IN THE SONGS OF OUR HEARTS. AND OUR WORDS BRING A GIFT OF HOPE.” Those are the first lines of song lyrics written during this year’s coronavirus global pandemic in direct dedication to children and teachers, specifically to Ann Smith, the founder and artistic director of North Texas Metroplex Children’s Choirs. The song was written by Judith Herrington, a choral composer from Washington. She and Ann had met in January at a music conference in Atlanta, Georgia. The two became fast friends and comrades, and Ann commissioned her to write a piece for the 25th anniversary of NTCC in 2021. “We spent a lot of time going back and forth on text, my thoughts, the Psalms and Bible stories I liked,” recalls Ann. “Then there was silence for a couple of months.” When Ann received an email from Judith one day out of the blue, outlining this song, Ann says she got goosebumps. “As I listened more, I got tears. This treasure of music ended up being a gift to our choirs, a Gift of Hope,“ Ann says. “COVID-19 has caused a lot of sorrow in families. Loved ones were lost because of the virus. Other people who were in the hospital for illnesses other than COVID could not see their family members unless death was near. I look at how so many people and businesses have reached out to help. Our government has reached out to aid those in need. Our American Spirit came through even in a very dark time in our history,” Ann reflects. But, as Ann concludes, Americans were designed to be hopeful because “it’s a gift.” “In this time, and in times to come, hope, trust and faith are the paths we must follow,” she adds. The vision of the North Texas Children’s Choir is to provide elementary- aged children of North Texas with a choral musical experience that exceeds the daily classroom setting. This is achieved by selecting challenging repertoire and performing in a venue of professional quality with a professional guest conductor.

“MAY YOUR HEART BE FILLED WITH JOY AND PEACE. MAY YOUR WAYS BE GUIDED BY STEADFAST LOVE. MAY YOU FIND STRENGTH IN THE SONGS OF OUR HEARTS. AND OUR WORDS BRING A GIFT OF HOPE.”

ABOUT NTMCC The North Texas Children’s Choir, formerly the Metroplex Children’s Choir, began in 1995 as a simple dream. The dream was for elementary-aged children to have an enriching experience outside the traditional choral music classroom. Seeds of beauty, culture and joy are sown in the hearts of children as the choir sang music from around the world. With 20 different schools and 200-plus children singing annually at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas, the dream came alive. Throughout the years, more than 4,500 children have taken part in the audition process and festival concert. It provides children with a challenge and a chance to grow musically, socially as they meet new friends, and emotionally as hearing older choirs/ensembles helps to visualize their future in music. The vision of the choir is achieved by selecting challenging repertoire and performing in a venue of professional quality with a professional guest conductor. NTChoirs.com

Home Care For Special Needs

“At Inclusive Community Home Care Agency, we recognize the dedication and the devotion of the families and survivors of our veterans. “This family quickly became like family to me,” she recalls. Wanting to make an even deeper impact into the special needs community, Christin took a job with the federal government. She accepted a position with the Department of Defense Education Activity on Fort Stewart Army base. She says this position allowed her to work with special needs children of military families. She poured three years into this specialty. Still wanting to expand her platform even further and after she received her master’s degree in human services and leadership, Christin accepted another federal government job, this time with The Department of Homeland Security to help prepare the disability community from disasters. Christin graduated with her PhD during the summer of 2019, going on from there to pursue her passion toward entrepreneurship. Through prayer, mentoring and coaching, she says a year later she started the development of Inclusive Community Home Care Agency. “I knew I wanted to reach the community in a broader way, I truly believe that everything has a particular purpose that is linked to a greater purpose,” she says. As Myles Monroe projected: “The journey may encounter many bumps and detours, but eventually it will come to a direct end.” 214.210.8477 InclusiveCommunityCare.com 20

Inclusive Community Home Care is unique because they realize individuals with disabilities, specifically those who are blind, low vision, deaf or hard of hearing, don’t receive equal access to health care. Knowing this, Inclusive Community offers accessible communication options, such as interpreting services, alternate formats and other assistive technology options for those who need care but require additional support.

02.

Inclusive Community Home Care Agency serves those who have served our country. Inclusive staffers serve them as they would their own families and survivors because they value their loyalty and understand what they sacrificed to support all of us. These services are available to veterans of all ages, privately in their own homes.

03.

Inclusive Community Home Care is dedicated to ensuring equal access to their clients who receive in-home care services. They believe it is essential for their caregivers and administrative staff to provide equal access and equal opportunity to people with diverse abilities. They offer language services for individuals who may be deaf or hard of hearing, blind, speak limited or no English, and people who have speech disabilities. CityLifestyle.com/Frisco

+ Cardboard + White crepe paper + Construction paper + Glue + Scissors + Beads, yarn, pom poms, etc.

DIRECTIONS 1. Take your cardboard and cut two pieces into the shape of a llama (we found a stencil online). Then, cut strips of cardboard the depth you want your llama to be. You’ll connect these to either side of the llama cutouts to enclose your piñata. 2. Glue your strip of cardboard all along the edge of one side of your llama, then glue to the other side. (Be sure to leave a hole you can close up later so you can fill it with your favorite candy!) 3. Starting at the neck, cover the front, back and sides of your llama with white crepe paper, cutting a slit every half inch or so to create the traditional piñata look. 4. Cover all remaining sides the neck and head with white construction paper, cut to fit your design. 5. Using construction paper, beads, pom poms, tassels, buttons, etc., add some flair to the rest of your llama! Bonus points for incorporating different shapes and textures into your final product.

PARTING THOUGHTS

Corners of the Heart BE A CHANGE MAKER IN A CHANGING WORLD ARTICLE BECKA CORBITT

“I ALONE CANNOT CHANGE THE WORLD, BUT I CAN CAST A STONE ACROSS THE WATERS TO CREATE MANY RIPPLES.” - MOTHER TERESA Talking through real issues and facing new norms: our willingness to effectively listen to one another’s thoughts through these new seasons we face is critical in calming our anxieties and putting our fears to rest. In the corners of our hearts are places that feel uneasy and cause us to wonder if it is safe to mention our own feelings on topics we are all daily facing at this time. To move through changes, we must allow one another the freedom to have those hard conversations, express our fears and help each other verbalize the unsettling realness we walk into each day. There’s the old saying...”This Too Shall Pass” and “There Is Nothing New Under The Sun.” As true as these may be... when what we face is literally “In Our Face” everyday, we have to open up our hearts to be great listeners, effective listeners and compassionate listeners. I have had the opportunity weekly to talk directly with business owners, teachers, mothers, fathers, health care workers, city officials and more. Inside each of these conversations is wisdom, concerns, wondering about the future and hope toward a better tomorrow. Also, I hear words of encouragement and amazing stories of how our community and those communities around us are pulling together and showing support, love and open arms to one another. Just like the corners of our hearts hold powerful soul nuggets. Think about what you can do to make an impact in your corner of the world. Support local, reach out in a powerful way through generosity, offer someone a listening ear and above all...show love to all. Be a Change Maker in our Changing World.
