As an owner of two small businesses, I would implore you to do business with the companies you see in this issue, and others here locally. 2020 Census!
The U.S. Constitution mandates that every 10 years we count every person who lives in the United States. This year is the first digital census, which means you can respond online. Drop this link into your browser and watch the video to learn more about the census: www.census.gov
DOES FILLING OUT A CENSUS FORM IMPACT ME? YES IT DOES!
The distribution of more than $675 billion in federal funds, grants, and support to states, counties, and communities are based on census data. That money is spent on schools, hospitals, roads, public works, and other vital programs. • • •
3 WAYS TO RESPOND:
Fill out your form online. Request a paper form by calling the U.S. Census Bureau. Work with a certified Census representative to complete your form over-the phone.
IS CENSUS DATA CONFIDENTIAL?
Your answers are protected by law and are strictly confidential. It is illegal for the Census Bureau, or its employees to share your personal information with any other government agency. This includes law enforcement, government agents or immigration.
IT’S ABOUT REDISTRICTING
After each decade’s census, state officials redraw the boundaries of the congressional and state legislative districts in their states to account for population shifts. Taking part is your civic duty and this year 2020 will be easier than ever! In 2020, you will be able to respond to the census online. Completing the census is mandatory: it’s a way to participate in our democracy and say “I COUNT! April 1, 2020 is Census Day – Are You Ready? To learn more visit www.census.gov

you’re finally giving yourself permission to explore the world alone. Well, congratulations! The hardest part is saying Yes to yourself. Too often we miss amazing opportunities because we are afraid to go alone. This year I took my first solo vacation. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do but never fully committed to. I have to say, my solo trip to Cartagena, Colombia, was even better than expected. Not just because Cartagena is one of those dreamy destinations that we all lust over on Instagram, but because I was in full control of my experience. There was no one to consult or ask for an opinion. My preferences were the only thing that mattered, and my choices were the priority. Now it’s your turn! Planning a solo trip can be just as much fun as actually taking the trip. Be sure to make time to explore all your options. Follow these 5 simple steps to begin your journey! CONTINUED >

high school students encounter. It was named by its founder, Thena Monts Norman, in honor of Bishop Dr. Barbara Lewis King, founder and spiritual leader of Hillside International Truth Center. In its 23-year history, the foundation has awarded over 300 scholarships. It is hard to believe this year is the 100th anniversary of the Harlem Renaissance. The Renaissance was an awakening of the second generation of a freed people, who recognized their own self-worth. They enlighten and brighten the world with their talent and intellect. There’s no better example of Black achievement to place before our aspiring students than the Harlem Renaissance. Thanks to the many supporters of the BLKSF, this event was an overwhelming success! The master of ceremonies, Arthur Cole, presided over an exciting evening of songs, dances and other festivities. The guests were treated to marvelous renditions of the various artists, musicians and poets of that era. Tributes were made to Langston Hughes by Horace Brown, Fats Waller by Tim McAfee Lewis, Billie Holiday by Chandri Morton, Cab Calloway’s “Minnie the Moocher” by Michelle Benjamin and many other artists and participants of the Renaissance. The King Harlem Dancers, portrayed by the Hillside Truth in Motion dancers, topped off the program with a spectacular dance revue to the tune of Duke Ellington’s, “It Don’t Mean a Thing If It Ain’t Got That Swing.” Their performance was so outstanding that the audience gave them a standing ovation and called for an encore. The evening was capped off by the 911 Band, which swung into action with their electrifying sound, keeping guests dancing until closing. BLKSF thanks the many businesses who support the foundation’s efforts. Find these businesses at BLKSF.net; please support them. Donations are always welcome at BLKSF.net. GENESIS ASSET MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES GROUP- KEVIN WEBB
DR. LEROY VENNSMILE STUDIO While this time away from the office has been challenging, it has afforded my office time to reflect on best practices. We just had a meeting in the lobby of our new facility in Fairburn (practicing six feet of social distancing, of course). We scheduled a deep cleaning for the office and prioritized resources regarding PPE supplies so we are prepared post pandemic, even if there is a future "flare-up". I am in the process of integrating teledentistry into our digital flow at the office. This will give patients the option to have access to me and my staff from the comfort of their home which is helpful in times like this but also in general with the busy lives we all lead. We will be adding more treatment days to our schedule to meet the needs of our new and existing patients as well. We look forward to sharing a smile with South Fulton sooner than later. Smile...it's just life.

with water, loaded on trucks, and distributed to key locations frequented by the homeless in the Atlanta Metro Area. The initiative was developed by Terence Lester, executive director of Love Beyond Walls, an organization who mission is to “restore dignity to the homeless and poor by providing a voice, visibility, shelter, community, and grooming and support services to achieve self-sufficiency.” Lester who was once counted amongst Atlanta’s homeless is now founder of Love Beyond Walls. “Lecrae understands the importance of restoring the community and affirming the dignity of those who are unseen, that it takes both faith and action to provide real restoration in our communities and world. Jesus washed feet, now we have an opportunity to wash hands and provide that same type of restoration in a modern way.” “I’ve been following Covid19 quite intently since it’s become a pandemic and first and foremost, I want to remind people THIS IS NOT THE END!” shares Lecrae. “While we can heed The Center For Disease Control and Prevention’s recommendation to stay away from others who are sick, avoid crowds, and properly wash our hands, I can’t help but think about those living on the street who have no way to bathe or wash their hands. People who may eat, sleep, and congregate so close to each other that social distancing is not possible.”

THE YOUNG SONGSTRESS FEATURED ON MISSY'S DRIPDEMEANOR SINGLE
“He was also a rebel and listened to Al Green, Bob Marley and a lot of older, classic artists. I listened to a lot of Aaliyah, Mariah Carey, and Alicia Keys with my mom and aunt. But my first musical idol was Selena,” she says. When asked about who’s on her playlist today, she touts another songstress with capturing her ear. “The other day I heard ‘Just Be A Man About It’ by Toni Braxton for the first time. I fell in love with it.” Sum1’s uncle noticed her interest and introduced her to songwriting software. By age 15, she was writing and singing her own songs. With the power of social media, a manager stumbled upon her talent on the Gram, connected her with a girl group, and within two years, the girls were signed to a recording deal in Atlanta! Now solo, Sum1 has partnered with music mogul Missy Elliott on Missy’s latest single, “DripDemeanor.” “It was fun working with her and her team. They’re all down to earth and humble. LOCAL’S CHOICE SEXY, FEARLESS STYLE
TORI SOUDAN A TRUE ARTIST AND VISIONARY, TORI SOUDAN IS ONE OF THE FEW AFRICAN AMERICAN FEMALE SHOE DESIGNERS IN THE WORLD. Her purpose—born out of a love for fashion—began at just 9 years old in her hometown of Stratford, Connecticut, where her mother taught her to make fancy Easter dresses. As a teenager, Tori progressed to designing prom gowns for classmates. Her inspiration to design footwear came in 1994 when she studied abroad and saw a demonstration given by a master shoemaker near Venice, Italy. She was struck by the intricacies of Old World shoemaking and embarked on her vision to design footwear of impeccable quality for women. She went on to graduate Spelman College, and after studying design at the famed Parson’s Institute of Design in NYC and interning with American sportswear designer Tommy Hilfiger, Tori was ready to give women what she knew they deserved—the most superlative shoes imaginable, and in 2011, she debuted her first collection. Today the Tori Soudan Shoe Collection is about timeless sophistication and sexy, fearless style. For Tori, shoes are emotional and she designs stories. Her designs, which are handmade in Italy by master artisans, are also evocative of her love of art, photography, fashion and exotic destinations, all of which translate into a heady dose of color, texture, wit and directional detailing, be it architectural shapes or a provocative combination of unique skins and opulent fabrics. “I love creating dimensions in my designs. I play with light and reflection, smooth versus soft surfaces and sheen versus matte, as it’s essential to me to move beyond the ordinary into something that denotes distinction,” she says. Tori believes that women should dress from the shoes up, and with every collection she passionately gives them a reason to do so. Check out her unique styles at ToriSoudan.com.
