From our golf courses, tennis courts, swimming pools and incredible lake, to our clubs, parks and shores, there is something here for everyone. In this community, our children have many options to take advantage of what Grosse Pointe has to offer. Our pampered pets also have more opportunities to enjoy our beautiful topography. To capture the words of Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, "There is no place like Grosse Pointe." Kids and summer fun go hand in hand. If you are looking for activities for children, we have some suggestions to enhance their summer. Lou’s Pet Shop is a Grosse Pointe treasure. Donnie teaches us the value of the culture of kindness through pet keeping as well as educating us about exotic animals and their care. a stream of expensive repairs. Variables, like budget and anticipated usage drive decisions about leasing vs. buying or new vs. used should be taken into consideration. Leasing is best option if you only need the car for two to three years. Since you are only “buying” the depreciation for the period of the lease, payments are much lower…but you build no equity. Purchasing is a better alternative if you will be keeping the vehicle for more than two to three years. Which leads to another question…new car vs. used car. The benefit of purchasing a late-model pre-owned vehicle is clear. Its price is lower because the initial depreciation was absorbed by the previous owner. With a manufacturer’s “Certified Pre-Owned Vehicle”, the extended warranty combines with a lender’s “Certified” terms to make it like buying a new car. My recommendation? With our two dealerships representing 6 great brands…picking one is like asking me to name my favorite child. The answer is the same…I love ‘em all. But since you asked… For a lease… a Jeep Compass Limited 4X4. This Jeep combines ruggedness with features like heated leather seating, remote start and back-up camera assist. Its resale value is so high, the lease payment on a Limited is less than Jeeps not nearly as well equipped. For purchase, a 2018 “Certified Pre-Owned” Buick Encore SUV. This one-owner Buick Encore Sport Touring with 5,100 miles is like new and comes with a 6-year 100,000-mile factory warranty. Price? $10,000 less than the original MSRP! Ray Laethem Buick-GMC can be found at 17677 Mack Avenue, at University; Ray Laethem Chrysler-DodgeJeep-Ram at 18001 Mack, at Washington. Find more about them on-line at www.raylaethem.com THE RAY LAETHEM DEALERSHIPS ARE A 40-YEAR OLD MACK AVENUE LANDMARK WITH GROSSE POINTE ROOTS THAT RUN DEEP. The Company’s Founder, Ray Laethem was a Grosse Pointer. His son Jeff, who now manages the dealerships bearing his father’s name, is a life-long Pointer as well. Managing two dealerships representing six separate brands of cars, trucks and SUVs, Jeff seemed to be the right person to ask what advice he would offer to a family considering a car for their teenager. Here’s what he had to say.--There are many factors to consider when choosing a vehicle for the teenage driver. Some are non-negotiable, like safety and reliability. Some factors are variable. Your teen should be driving a vehicle with the latest safety features… not just air bags, but active safety, like lane change alerts or rear cross path detection. Reliability is the other “must have”. You can’t have a teenager stranded with a car that won’t start, causing

FINANCIAL BUZZ

ways kids can earn money TIPS ON KIDS SUMMER JOBS

ARTICLE PAIGE PEABODY 22

Grosse Pointe Lifestyle | August 2020

THINGS HAVE CHANGED SO MUCH SINCE I WAS A CHILD. There are travel sports, year round arts and music programs, and full time everything and anything. With all of this going on, how can our children find the hours to work? These busy schedules don't help but there are ways for our kids to make money and still participate in their summer fun. Depending on your child's interest and/or skill-set, there are many creative opportunities out there to earn a dollar. I like to separate these types of revenue generating activities into three categories. The first segment is the traditional job, which may have an age requirement, consists of order-taking, cashiering or bagging at a local market, caddying at the golf course, life guarding or camp counseling at a local park or club, and hostessing or waitressing at a nearby restaurant. These may not be as flexible as some of the other categories that I will mention below but can be a good experience and learning tool for your youth. You can even have him/ her ask about flexibility in scheduling. The next category is the self starter, which can be done at any age based on maturity. This consists of babysitting, mowing lawns, selling artwork, private lessons, boat washing and more. Business cards, websites and social media can be handy in getting the word out to the community about the available opportunity. These can be fun and easily fit into a busy schedule. You and your child just need to decide what days and times are best and stick to those. They can even be listed on the media tool used in the outreach. The last category is the "helpful home jobs". Again, these

ways kids can earn money: TIP 1 USE YOUR CONNECTIONS - We all know that our friends and family are most likely to know and trust those who we refer for hire. Well, the same goes for our kids. Use your circle of influence to see who is hiring and how to get in front of them. This is really a win win since they can hire someone who they know to be responsible and you know just what they are getting into.

can be started at almost any age and the reward can include anything the child would consider a "payout". These are like chores but should not be something that your child is required to do. This type of work could include cleaning out the garage, organizing the pantry, cleaning the windows, and/or painting the fence. This

TIP 2 START LOOKING EARLY - If your youth goes to job hunt the day school gets out, they won’t likely be able to find anything. They need to start in the winter and probably just after the New Year. People and businesses want to know that they are covered during the summer months and need to have their hires set before the season begins.

"job" might be something you would normally hire someone else to do or just something you want done but don't have the time to commit at

TIP 3 BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU ASK FOR - Make sure that the job

FUN PAPER CRAFT ACTIVITY FOR YOU + YOUR KIDDO ARTICLE NICOLETTE MARTIN

M AT E R I A L S + Cardboard + White crepe paper + Construction paper + Glue + Scissors + Beads, yarn, pom poms, etc.

DIRECTIONS 1. Take your cardboard and cut two pieces into the shape of a llama (we found a stencil online). Then, cut strips of cardboard the depth you want your llama to be. You’ll connect these to either side of the llama cutouts to enclose your piñata. 2. Glue your strip of cardboard all along the edge of one side of your llama, then glue to the other side. (Be sure to leave a hole you can close up later so you can fill it with your favorite candy!)

PIÑLLAMA

3. Starting at the neck, cover the front, back and sides of your llama with white crepe paper, cutting a slit every half inch or so to create the traditional piñata look. 4. Cover all remaining sides the neck and head with white construction paper, cut to fit your design. 5. Using construction paper, beads, pom poms, tassels, buttons, etc., add some flair to the rest of your llama! Bonus points for incorporating different shapes and textures into your final product.

If you have time to visit Lou's Pet Shop, please be sure to check out Franky, the infamous turtle, or should we say Sulcata Tortoise who is 26 years young and will probably out live all of us. Donnie's hope is that his children will retire with him in warm sunny Florida. Lou’s Pet Shop carries a variety of exotic pets to fit your fancy. Donnie Cook took over from Lou’s son, Joe over 14 years ago. Donnie was in the automotive industry when he took a leap of faith and let his passion for animals drive his career. When Joe was going to sell the store, Donnie decided to purchase it and save it from closing. Donnie created a mission statement that meant something special to the community; “Crafting a culture of kindness through pet keeping.” Lou’s Pet Shop is licensed to sell exotic animals through the United States Department of Agriculture.
