ORGANIC OR LAB CREATEDIT’S YOUR CHOICE!

COLORFUL GEMSTONES ARTICLE RHONDA STEPHENS PHOTOGRAPHY JILLYLAINE PHOTOGRAPHY

VISITING A JEWELRY STORE TO GAZE AT ALL THE BEAUTIFUL GEMSTONES IS SOMETHING NEARLY EVERYONE HAS DONE. If you are planning to add a gem to your jewelry collection, there are considerations to be made, such as will your purchase be an organic gemstone or one created in a lab? Born under high heat and pressure, gemstones are formed over thousands of years deep in the earth, or formed as soon as six months if created in a lab. Lab-created or synthesized gems are identical to their natural counterpart because they are made of the same material. Synthesized gems often have better color saturation, cost less and have fewer inclusions than found in nature.

Cheryl Kibiloski, owner of The Find Consignment in Monrovia, says, “As a gemologist, I think lab-grown is equally as beautiful as some of the natural gems, but it is a personal preference. Some of my clients only want something that came out of the ground. These gems have come so far. Lab-grown sapphires, for example, have become so much more affordable and desirable. It has all the natural elements in it, takes less time for the stone to develop and costs less because it didn’t come from a mine. They are virtually indistinguishable, even to the professionals. It takes a well-trained eye to know the difference.” “I worked in jewelry stores primarily with diamonds, but when I attended the Gemological Institute, I fell in love with the colored gemstones even more than the diamonds. Gemstones have these beautiful inclusions, meaning any material that is trapped inside of another mineral while that mineral forms. For example, peridot has an identifying inclusion that, when viewed through the microscope, looks like a Lily pad inside. Sapphires and rubies have an inclusion that appears to be a fingerprint. It looks like God has left his fingerprints inside the stone. Gazing at gemstones, I have a whole different viewpoint because not only is it pretty on the outside, it’s cool knowing what to look for on the inside. It brings

HER CALENDAR’S FULL WITH NO AGENDA KEEPING UP WITH KARLYS KLINE

ARTICLE RHONDA STEPHENS PHOTOGRAPHY REBECCA MITCHELL

HEADING TO THE TROPICS TO RELAX FOR RETIREMENT ISN’T THIS PETITE POWERHOUSE’S IDEA OF FUN. At the age when many are slowing down, Karlys Kline says, “Without a doubt, my life is busier today than it was 20 years ago! I pack my days full, as much as possible, except for Sundays. Those are reserved for my husband, Tom Lynch. I think I’m at full stride now. I sometimes joke that I will soon learn to say ‘no,’ but I just don’t see it happening!” Life certainly is full for this amazingly energetic woman. If you have not had the pleasure, and I do mean pleasure, of meeting Karlys, you are missing out on pure sunshine. People gravitate toward her, and with good reason. Rarely is she seen without a smile on her face, and the truth is she has never met a stranger. In fact, you may have seen her out and about on her daily ‘meet-ups.’ As a regular at Café Nola, Karlys can scarcely make it to the ladies’ room without hearing a multitude of greetings from around the room from both new and old friends. It is hard to believe that Karlys once was a stranger in town. Following her heart, and an article she had read about Frederick, she moved here in 1989. Without knowing anyone, she threw herself into getting to know the community and determined that she

HER CALENDAR’S FULL WITH NO AGENDA (CONTINUED)

“I THINK I AM AT FULL STRIDE NOW”

She says, “I didn’t know anyone, not one person, to invite to join me. But I would often see familiar faces, and we would chat. It was a great way to get to know downtown and the energy of the people!” Through work, Karlys met Ann Burnside Love, a longtime Frederick resident who owned the marketing firm now known as Love and Co. Ann encouraged her to become involved in community service and opened doors for her, one of which was sponsoring Karlys for The Rotary. She says, “Ann was solely responsible for my initial immersion into community service, and I am forever grateful.” Not at all intimidated by power or position, Karlys followed Ann’s advice by seeking ways to connect with others and to serve the community. “As the saying goes, ‘we’re all just people.’ I had no preconceived notion as to who was prominent or influTop Right: Dress by Jade Couture, courtesy of TLC Bridal; Jewelry courtesy of Colonial Jewelers. ential. I met most people initially in a non-business setting. I genuinely think that people in Frederick don’t get caught up in their positions, status or financial wealth.”

Karlys, believing we have the power to choose our own contentment and happiness, says, “I am genuinely happy almost always. A gigantic reason for that is because life with Tom makes my heart sing. Many years ago, I made a conscious effort to eliminate negative people that were draining my good energy. I think attitude is the key to happiness, and I am grateful for everything in my life. Some people say that I’m lucky, but I say it was hard work and mainly the right attitude.” It was hard work at the start. Karlys realized that there were many amazing women in Frederick, but they didn’t seem to know one another. She came up with a creative idea that left a legacy of deep friendships. “About 20 years ago, I had the idea of having quar-

FASHION AND BEAUTY HAVE BEEN DEFINED THROUGH THE ERAS IN A THOUSAND DIFFERENT WAYS. Each year, month, and season, the definition evolves. Today, we live in a blend of cultures, perspectives and nationalities that shape our society and transcend any limits placed on “beauty.” Skin color, hair type, body shape, and other physical aspects become unique building blocks for the radiance we each possess. Fashion, in its own right, takes the foundation of our outward individuality and layers upon it the expression of our inward personality.

IN CONTRAST TO ALL OF THE THINGS THAT 2020 HAS TAKEN AWAY FROM US, THERE IS ONE THING THAT IT HAS GIVEN US IN FULL MEASURE, AND THAT IS A HEIGHTENED AWARENESS OF THE INTERSECTION – AND SOMETIMES CONFLICT – BETWEEN OUR HEALTH AND OUR FINANCES. Our health and our prosperity are inextricably linked, and the increased focus on this idea brought on by the challenges of the COVID pandemic may be the gift that many didn’t know they needed, especially if retirement years are around the bend.

What do health and prosperity look like in retirement for you? Most Americans

are living longer, healthier lives, and our retirement years will likely be full of opportunities to pursue our health goals; it’s never too late to become more fit. Theresa Harrison started running after retiring from the helm of her very successful intelligence and cyberspace business. It’s not too late to make a lasting dietary or lifestyle change, or to pick up a new hobby that promotes well-being such as becoming involved in The Rotary and traveling the world as Jan West did upon retiring from her real estate company. In fact, the slower pace of retirement opens doors that have been closed to us in our working years or years busy with our children’s lives. Suddenly it’s not impossible to join a yoga class that meets in the middle of the day, or a cycling club that rides for hours each weekend, or swim in the English Channel Relay like former Frederick County school teacher, Janet Manning, has done. Not many would take up that challenge, but Janet was game to do that to commemorate her 50th birthday.

When we think about what may be in the years ahead, it can be encouraging and exciting; less stress and more time will do wonders for our health and longevity – but will health costs that we face in our senior years sabotage all of that potential? Playing one of the largest roles in both our health and financial considerations for retirement is Medicare, and because it’s both complicated and frankly, unenjoyable to learn about, many seniors approach their Medicare eligibility (for most Americans, at age 65) largely in the dark

about what to expect. The results of this can be shocking and disappointing; costs are generally much higher than they anticipated, care that they would have expected to be covered by Medicare will not be, and depending on location, plan and provider options may be limited. Without a foundational understanding of what Medicare costs, what it does and doesn’t cover, and what choices they’ll have access to, facing all of these considerations can leave many retiring Americans feeling robbed of some of the financial security and health benefits they were counting on. To minimize stress and maximize enjoyment of our senior years, it’s never too early to learn more about Medicare – if you’re approaching Medicare eligibility, you’ll have the confidence that comes from a clear vision of what lies ahead, and if you’re several years away, you’ll have the time you may need to save more for healthcare costs in your retirement years. Some of the things to learn now are:

+ Medicare has monthly premiums, deductibles, coinsurance and copayments; depending on your health needs, out-of-pockets costs for many Medicare beneficiaries can be several thousand dollars per year.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE (CONTINUED) + Medicare does not cover long-term care (also called custodial care), and most nursing home care is custodial care, so planning for long-term care costs in addition to Medicare costs is an important piece of a secure retirement.

+ Medicare does not cover dental care (Medicare plans that mention dental benefits are offering ancillary benefits that typically don’t exceed $1500-$2000 per year). The dental needs of seniors are often greater than those of younger people, especially as dental technology rapidly advances, so planning extra savings for years of dental care is critical.

+ Medicare plan options are different from one state to the next and even from one county to the next, and they will have varying costs depending on locality, as well (you may have the same plan as a cousin in North Carolina, but may be surprised to find that your premiums in Maryland are higher). You may see doctors who are critical to your care, but those providers are not in-network for the plan in your area that fits your budget. If you are many years away, staying on top of changes in the Medicare system and how they’ll impact you later is a wise practice, in addition to saving more with eyes towards realistic healthcare expenses in retirement. If your Medicare years are quickly approaching or you are already on Medicare, there is still good news – Medicare is constantly growing and making improvements that are focused on the whole health of its beneficiaries, and plan options in the Frederick area are improving each year, as well. With help from a licensed Medicare insurance professional, you can review your current plans and make cost-saving changes for the year ahead. Wherever you are on your path, knowing more will mean less stress – a winning combination for a healthy and prosperous retirement.
