To a New Year and a New Decade HAPPY AND HEALTHY NEW YEAR! As we begin 2020, a new decade, we set goals and envision what our future will hold for ourselves and our families. where we were 12 months ago. So much change can happen in a year, so as we plan our future and commit to resolutions, we also leave some room to change our minds— to grow and become a better person tomorrow than we are today. January is our Health and Wellness issue and I’m so excited to share the stories of Dr. Ruchi Kaul of Maitri Wellness and Dr. Ann Marie Olsen of Sophisticated Hearing. Dr. Kaul brings a whole new approach to personalized medical care for each one of her patients. She has the knowledge, experience and compassion that is rarely exhibited in today’s hectic world. MIKE MCLACHLAN IS “STICKING” WITH HOCKEY THESE DAYS. The Franklin Lakes native grew up playing the game at Indian Hills High School, followed by club hockey in the Penn State Men’s League. Taking a timeout for marriage, career and family, he coached at Don Bosco before transferring to his current position as Head Coach of Ramapo High School’s ice hockey team. In 2016, a group of parents approached him about starting a team for players in Wyckoff, and the Wyckoff Generals were founded as an independent spring co-ed hockey team for players aged 17 and under. The group grew to 100 players and five teams in three short years, with players coming from as far away as Livingston, Ringwood, and New City, New York. “Traditionally, hockey teams begin practicing in August or September and don’t finish their season until March,” says Mike. “Spring hockey is a great opportunity for kids CONTINUED >

creativity in the game, which helps players avoid being too rigid.” The team welcomes young women to its roster and currently has nine female players; two of whom play on the Ramapo High School team. Mike enjoys seeing the growth in popularity and development of a sport he loves, and he feels the most important aspect of any sport is to develop positive life skills in kids and young adults. “I get satisfaction in seeing our players improve their skills and finding effective ways to motivate them. You have to find the balance of giving compliments along with constructive criticism. I love coaching because sports affect kids in a positive way.”

“WHEN YOU LOSE YOUR VISION, YOU LOSE CONTACT WITH THINGS. WHEN YOU LOSE YOUR HEARING, YOU LOSE CONTACT WITH PEOPLE.” –Helen Keller That’s a meaningful quote for Dr. Ann Marie Olson, founder of Sophisticated Hearing in Ho-Ho-Kus. “When people go out socially, they bring their glasses so they can see. When they start losing their hearing, many choose to stay home and forego their social lives because they feel uncomfortable when they cannot properly participate in the conversation. I encourage patients to consider their hearing aids like their glasses. Make sure you have them in order to enjoy time out with friends.” Dr. Olson has a long history of education and experience in helping her patients hear better. With a doctorate in audiology, she is the President of HLAA (Hearing Loss Association of America) and the Vice President of Communications for the New Jersey Academy of Audiology, a professional association for audiologists. There is a significant difference in the level of ser-

vice between a hearing aid dispensary and a visit to an audiologist. “A hearing care center directed by an audiologist is not just about selling hearing aids,” she says. “We analyze each person’s situation, occupation and lifestyle. Then, we diagnose the level of hearing loss and present options to the patient. There are many health-related issues that may cause hearing loss including diabetes, heart disease, smoking, poor circulation and high blood pressure. Chemotherapy treatments and heavy antibiotic use can also have hearing loss as side effects. An initial consultation includes an analysis of the patient’s past history and previous hearing tests. The discussion includes questions about specific hearing difficulties and the patient’s lifestyle. Dr. Olson advises bringing a trusted loved one along. Getting objective feedback from another person can be eye-opening for both parties involved. A hearing test is administered which can simulate different environments; for example, there may be significant problems when background noise is present. Once Dr. Olson has the results, she advises on manufacturers and styles. She also takes into account issues like dexterity and choosing the aid which suits the patient’s age and lifestyle. The progressive technology being developed in hearing aids is staggering. New models are invisible

THE DEFINITION OF WELLNESS
BALANCE YOUR BODY AND MIND AT DEFINE
ARTICLE KRIS PEPPER PHOTOGRAPHY JEAN TERMAN
24
Northwest Bergen Lifestyle | January 2020
HOW DO YOU “DEFINE” WELLNESS? Ask Ellen Park, owner of DEFINE Body & Mind in Allendale. “We have a different way of doing things. Our classes offer sustainability in exercise that you cannot get from other programs that incorporate a lot of stress to the body. We support strong bodies while being kind to your joints.” When Ellen moved to Bergen County, she checked out fitness clubs, but could not find anything that she loved. “Everything felt very singular,” she says. “So, I decided to start my own. I researched many fitness franchises and DEFINE really spoke to me.” Ellen liked the various disciplines of exercise as well as the philosophy of health and well-being for the body and mind. CLASSES INCLUDE: Hammock - Similar to aerial yoga, but focus on lengthening and stretching the body. The workout helps decompress the spinal cord; great for lower back pain and sciatica sufferers. Mindball - Utilizing a Yamuna Mindball which is perfect for runners to roll out calves, hamstrings, and hips. Body - Ballet barre class which combines small and large movements with isometrics. Bounce - High-intensity interval training on a trampoline combining cardio and weight training. Cycling - Builds strength and endurance while being joint-friendly. Many classes are uniquely scheduled back-to-back so that members can attend two complementary sessions the same day. “DEFINE’s philosophy is to keep everything in balance,” says Ellen. “The connection of body and mind throughout your workout routine is what we are all about.” 49 West Allendale Ave, Allendale 201.783.8008 Allendale.DefineBody.com

Maitri Wellness WHEN DR. RUCHI KAUL DECIDED TO NAME HER PRACTICE MAITRI WELLNESS, SHE KNEW THAT THE WORD “MAITRI” TRANSLATES FROM SANSKRIT TO MEAN “UNCONDITIONAL LOVING-KINDNESS.” She soon realized that the name accurately reflected her foundational mantra as a physician who focuses on direct-care, integrative medicine. She has a love of life relationships, experiences and learning that enhance the services she provides throughout her practice. HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN MEDICINE? I grew up in Westchester, New York. My dad was a pediatric infectious disease physician, and my mom had a radiation oncology practice. I attended Dartmouth for my undergraduate degree in Spanish and later went back for my Masters in Epidemiology and Biochemistry. I attended Case Western Medical School in South Bend, Indiana and did my residency in South Bend and later at Beth Israel Hospital in New York City. My mom and dad were born in India. When I was 10, my dad thought he may want to move the family back there, so I accompanied him for six months while my mom stayed in the U.S. During that time, I learned to read and write Hindi. My dad ultimately made the decision to return to the United States, but I gained valuable cultural insights while I was in India. As I developed an interest in entering the medical field as a young adult, I began working in my parents’ practices and learned a
