"Now more than ever it is important that we build strong relationships among our residents and first responders," Mayor Robert Simison said. "In Meridian, we pride ourselves on being one of Idaho’s safest cities, and can credit that to the mutual respect between citizens and our officers. This respect has been earned through longstanding efforts that begin with education, and continue with each interaction that takes place between our police and fire departments and the community they serve." MERIDIAN MAN NETS NEW CATFISH RECORD Meridian’s Reed Monson landed a new catch and release state record for channel catfish. Monson was fishing for largemouth bass on Lake Lowell on July 24 when the 33-inch catfish inhaled his plastic swimbait. His fish narrowly beats the prior record, which was set by Scott Turner (32 inches) in May 2020. While Lake Lowell is primarily known as a bass destination, it does have a robust catfish population that is often overlooked. Idaho Fish and Game stocks between 5,000-10,000

catfish annually, which grow quickly and frequently exceed 10 pounds. Fish and Game often stocks channel catfish during the summer months, when waters are too warm for trout. Catfish have abundant populations in the Snake River and many of Idaho’s lakes, reservoirs, and ponds.

FROM MERIDIAN, AFTERNOON OR DAY-LONG ROAD TRIPS TO AWARDWINNING WINERIES ARE EASY

Meridian Lifestyle | October 2020

THERE ARE 62 WINERIES IN IDAHO AND COUNTING. It’s been exciting to watch this industry grow and many local wine aficionados will recall the big news in 2007 when Idaho received its first American Viticulture Area (AVA) designation. “There were many pioneers working on the Snake River Valley AVA before I started Cinder in 2006, but I was happy when we received that designation,” said Melanie Krause, winemaker and founder. “Having this AVA legitimizes the wine and helps tell the story of our wines here. It’s more specific than just being from a state.” “We’re proud to be part of Idaho’s quality wine community,” said Melanie. According to the Idaho Wine Commission, the wine-producing industry – viticulture – is one of the state’s fastest growing industries. Idaho now has three AVAs: The Snake River AVA was the state’s first, approved in 2007; the Eagle Foothills AVA followed in 2015 and, near Lewiston in central Idaho, the LewisClark AVA in 2016. Among the first grapes planted and tested in the hills formerly covered with sagebrush was Riesling. With success and determination, other varieties were planted and flourished in the various microclimates found in southern Idaho: Viognier, Syrah, Chardonnay, Petite Verdot, Malbec, Tempranillo

and

Cabernet

Sauvignon

among them. And following that 43rd parallel around the globe you find similar varieties in the wine regions of southern France, central Italy, and northern Spain.

It’s called Crave Delivery, an appbased food delivery concept that launched in the Treasure Valley in June 2020. Crave is designed to be a completely new way to order food from award-winning restaurants. The food dishes are prepared in a central commercial kitchen and delivered to Meridian, Eagle and Boise by drivers who work directly for Crave. Annual Family Tradition ARTICLE GREG GEWALT

OCTOBER IS HERE AND THAT MEANS

AFTER 16 YEARS, THIS FALL IS LINDER FARMS FINAL SEASON

THE AIR IS STARTING TO BECOME CRISPER, THE FALL LEAVES HAVE STARTED TO FALL, AND HARVEST ACTIVITIES ARE IN FULL SWING! Linder Farms has become one of the state’s most treasured places to visit during this time of year and it’s easy to see why. However, just like seasons come and go, this fall will be Linder Farms last season. Over the past 16 years, Linder Farms has been an annual tradition for many Treasure Valley families. People of all ages have enjoyed the fields of sunflowers, the petting zoo, pumpkin patch, and the Halloween festivities.

Randy and Sherrie are going to great lengths to make this year a season to remember. Randy Feist and his wife Sherrie originally started Linder Farms as a hobby, and earlier this year wrote to the community, “We have decided to make this our final season primarily because it is time for our lives to go in a different direction… running this farm and growing it has been a dream come true… After 16 years of running the farm, we are forever grateful that you have made Linder Farms a tradition for your family.” Working with 15 acres of their own, over the years Linder Farms depended on the ability to lease land from adjoining neighbors to accommodate their 20-acre pumpkin patch and 20-acre corn maze. As Meridian grows and developers build more homes, open farmland is coming at a premium which led to the Feist family’s decision to make 2020 their last season. Randy and Sherrie have worked hard to grow and improve their farm events each year, and 2020 will be no different - they are going to great lengths to make this year a season to remember. Idahoans Feeding the Nation

ARTICLE GREG GEWALT

A RECENT STUDY REVEALED THAT 92 PERCENT OF CONSUMERS INDICATE THAT KNOWING WHERE THEIR FOOD COMES FROM IS SOMEWHAT, OR VERY, IMPORTANT. Until recently, nearly all potatoes grown within the borders of Idaho were one variety— the Russet Burbank. This variety was actually discovered by accident when a brilliant horticulturist, Luther Burbank, was experimenting with another potato variety in the back yard of his New England home. Burbank brought

his first potato to California, and it later was planted in Washington and Oregon. Finally, it was modified in Colorado to have a reticulated, rough-skinned texture. Once it arrived on Idaho soil, everything changed.

Farming isn’t easy and yet it’s one of the most important careers in the world The reasons are simple: Idaho’s unique growing conditions, coupled with warm, sunny days and cool, crisp nights. The rich volcanic soil was just waiting for the application of water from irrigation to be able to produce bountiful crops of potatoes. Every year, Idaho harvests about 13 billion pounds of potatoes from 311,000 acres of mineral-rich volcanic soil. Today there are more than 600 farmers in Idaho who grow spuds adding russet, red, gold and fingerling varieties over the years and contributing further to Idaho’s potato market share. Farming isn’t easy and yet it’s one of the most important careers in the world. While growing and shipping advances were evolving, new technology was improving potato products. Scientists and food technologists were exploring methods for capturing the freshest of Idaho flavors to create top-quality frozen and dehydrated potatoes. The industry’s quality controls are so sophisticated that processed potato foods are often able to maintain their nutritional content with an extended shelf life. “Sysco’s QA [Quality Assurance] team includes, approximately, 200 full-time corporate associates and more than 50 contracted inspectors. This team is dedicated to one mission: delivering Sysco Brand products that meet the most exacting safety, reliability, and quality standards, as well as working with our suppliers to ensure the same standards are being upheld on non-Sysco branded products.” It might have taken a crisis like Covid-19 to really bring to light who these ‘essential workers’ really were, those who worked third shifts, quietly stocking shelves for eager patrons, or those driving across great stretches of highways and Sysco Chief Executive Officer Kevin Hourican talks about how the food supplier had to completely change its business model after the economy shutdown because of the coronavirus.

Says Mutschler, “Sysco pivoted its business quickly to help retail grocers in a number of ways, including providing labor to work in retailer warehouses and products to help meet the massive shift in demand. Sysco also stepped up to help the communities where we live and work by helping to alleviate a significant increase in food insecurity. We donated 30 million meals globally and loaned refrigerated trailers to help some foodbanks with storage for the increase in food inventory. We even donated produce to the Boise Zoo to feed the animals!” Even in our bleakest moments, we can take faith that not only will we not suffer from lack, but we can make a conscious effort to support our

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

Holistic Nutrition & Integrative Health FINDING NEW WAYS TO LIVE A MORE FULFILLED AND PASSIONATE LIFE

ARTICLE MCKENZIE JOYNER PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF MCKENZIE JOYNER

TRUE HEALTH ISN’T COMPRISED OF JUST THE FOODS WE EAT, BUT ALSO IN THE WAY WE MOVE OUR BODY, THE THOUGHTS WE THINK AND THE INFORMATION WE CONSUME ON A DAILY BASIS. I am convinced that these pieces come together and shape our overall health and well-being. FOOD - It is important to be intentional about the foods we are choosing to eat and when we eat them. I am convinced that eating seasonally and sourcing locally is essential. Eating seasonally allows your body to intuitively crave the foods needed to keep you healthy and nourished throughout the year. To make sourcing locally easier, I recommend building a relationship with your local farmers, bakers, and small businesses that support local vendors. This helps you know where your food comes from, who grew it, how they farmed it, and keeps your dollar within the community. NUTRITION - Eating shouldn’t be about logging your calories, tracking points, or checking things off from an outdated food pyramid. You should be enjoying every bite of nutrient-dense, delicious food at the end of your fork. Cooking and eating a meal should be an experience filled with love and enjoyment, not something to stress about nor rush through. I strongly suggest eating the rainbow, including a variety of textures as well as flavors at every meal. Placing different colors on your plate ensures a wide array of nutrients being ingested. I also recommend one fermented food with each meal as they keep your gut microbiome healthy. This could be pickles, kimchi, kombucha, sauerkraut, etc. 36

MOVEMENT - Movement is medicine. You can change your mood simply by moving your body. Exercise increases your heart rate, breath frequency, and releases endorphins. The movement doesn’t have to be extreme nor lengthy; it can be stretching, going for a walk, moving through yoga poses, or running in the foothills. There are wonderful ways to move your body, and I make it a point to do so on a daily basis. If you do the same, you will be amazed at how good you feel both physically and mentally. MINDFULNESS - Our minds are powerful. The thoughts and feelings we have every day create our environment in which we live and experience the world. My advice is to take time each day to sit in silence; you could meditate or just listen to your breath. This daily practice creates a space free from thought, outside noise, influence, or distraction. This simple act of being with yourself in silence will alter your reality, mindset, and ability to take on life. Make space for this sacred time for yourself. ROUTINE - It is the habits that we make that create our lives, health, and total wellness. It is the small actions that we do daily that build our base and set us up to live a life we love; a life that fills us up and creates space for more goodness to come our way. I n s pi r e d by S u cc e s s Jenna N. Englund ARTICLE KENDALL HOULTON

- VICE PRESIDENT, BERKELEY BUILDING COMPANY

WHAT DO YOU THINK ARE THE BEST SKILLS THAT YOU BRING TO YOUR JOB? In home building, community building, in managing a team and in life in general, I have found that empathy has been the skillset that has served to be the most important in my role at Berkeley Building Co. Being able to put myself in another’s shoes, while taking the initiative to constantly improve and explore new ways to anticipate and meet the needs of our clients and the community we serve has been invaluable. WHAT IS THE DEFINITION OF SUCCESS FOR YOU, PERSONALLY AND PROFESSIONALLY? Both personally and professionally, when I can create an environment for others where they feel supported and encouraged, they are limitless in what they are able to accomplish. Success to me is when your work and efforts have made a positive impact on others and helped the people who surround you feel confident to accomplish great things. OUTSIDE OF WORK/PROFESSION, DO YOU HAVE SKILLS OR TALENTS THAT MOST PEOPLE DO NOT KNOW ABOUT? Outside of work, I enjoy fundraising and working with charitable organizations. I love coaching soccer for little ones. Throwing a great party. And probably least known, I grew up salmon fishing (Oregon Coast) with my grandfather and am well-versed in fishing bait and tackle tactics. WHAT ARE SOME CAUSES YOU CARE ABOUT? As the mother of a Boise St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital “Miracle Child,” I am passionate about paying it forward by my
