will only be a matter of time when we can resume our human connection through gathering and embracing one another. It has been so refreshing to see how connected people are even in light of our “social distancing.” Through the past two months during the COVID-19 outbreak, it is astonishing to witness the outpouring of support and connection among the people of our community. Hats off to all of you for staying positive and hopeful throughout this unusual time. Human kindness always prevails—it's what we were made to do. Now it’s time to focus on the amazing gentlemen of our community... I always look forward to our “Gents” issue of Paradise Valley Lifestyle. Then, when they heard that Phoenix Children's Hospital needed 1,700 meals to support nurses during Nurse's Week (May 6-12), Casa Amigos tapped into its networks and raised $25,000 in 24 hours. Charitable Green Giving THUNDERBIRDS CHARITIES LENDS A MUCH-NEEDED HAND TO MORE THAN 300 VALLEY ORGANIZATIONS WHILE HELMING THE MOST-ATTENDED STOP ON THE PGA TOUR—THE WASTE MANAGEMENT PHOENIX OPEN

AFTER THE WEEK-LONG ACTIVITIES, FESTIVITIES, AND CELEBRATIONS BIG AND MINI, MOST WASTE MANAGEMENT PHOENIX OPEN ENTHUSIASTS ARE READY FOR SOME R&R BY THE TIME POST-TOURNAMENT MONDAY ROLLS AROUND. But Scott Jenkins and his fellow Thunderbirds Charities members don’t have that luxury. There is no room to decompress, nurse a hangover, or pledge to not think or speak anything golf for a while. For the storied Phoenix charity organization that helms the largest-attended tournament on the PGA tour, planning for the following year’s Phoenix Open starts the Monday morning after the winner is crowned Sunday afternoon. 14

Paradise Valley Lifestyle | June 2020

Planning for the 2021 Open, scheduled for Feb. 1-7, is well underway. Although the impact of COVID-19 plays a role that has The Thunderbirds (ThunderbirdsCharities.org) relying on cues from government leaders on how to proceed, the behind-the-scenes show of moving pieces marches on. “It’s a full year-long planning cycle. I was in meetings the Monday after the Sunday concluding day,” says Jenkins, the tournament chairman for the Open. “Sales of suites start in the summer. It’s a full-time job that continues through the year.” And it’s all worth it to know that the funds raised and given to more than 300 local charitable organizations will be put to good use. This year alone, the total amount that will be donated to local charities will reach $14 million, supporting organizations like St. Mary’s Food Bank, Phoenix Children’s Hospital, UMOM, and Family Promise. A most recent example of the difference these donations make is with the Valley’s Boys & Girls Clubs that have expanded their hours to care for children of first responders who do not have the luxury of working from home or finding other childcare options amid the pandemic. These funds ensure they have a safe place to go while mom and dad continue to do their jobs on the frontlines. Thunderbirds Charities also recently put together an emergency $1 million charity fund to assist those affected by the new coronavirus. “The fact that we are able to fund Boys & Girls Clubs to help them stay open longer so our hospital staff, as well as firefighters and police officers, can take care of us and take care of the community, we can see firsthand how it helps all of us,” Jenkins says. “And because the community is so supportive of the WM Phoenix Open, that really allows us, in times of crisis and need, to support the community with the tournament.” Since its inception in 1986, the nonprofit Thunderbirds Charities has raised more than $160 million for Arizona charities. It was formed with the specific duty of distributing money raised through the Open.

this allows us to keep our focus on that,” Campus Executive Director Amy Schwabenlender says. “Saying ‘thank you’ oftentimes isn’t enough.” This is the charitable arm of The Thunderbirds organization, which was formed in 1937 when the Phoenix Chamber of Commerce expanded its role as a convention and tourism bureau. The idea was to promote the Valley of the Sun through sports. It was comprised of five founding members, each of whom then recruited 10 colleagues to help with this task. The organization’s Zoom channel allows these charities to share not only the impact these precious funds make, but also their missions and their vital roles in the community. Jenkins has been present for check presentations and other events, where he’s seen the impact up close. “I grew up in Phoenix, and the opportunity to lead an organization like this is a wonderful feeling,” he says. “It’s very cyclical in nature. THESE SIX MEN ARE FORCES IN SHAPING THE VALLEY’S HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY

New Jersey native Patrick Brophy planned to go into hospitality early on. “Well, except for my dream to be in a Bon Jovi-style band back in the day,” says Brophy, noting he knew early on his passion for being in a hair band far outweighed his musical prowess. Beyond fantasizing about being a rock star, Brophy spent his free time exploring hotels in Jersey’s famed Atlantic City. “My pastime turned into what would become my career at 16 when I started at Trump Taj Mahal,” says Brophy. Eager to pursue hospitality full-time, Brophy studied the industry at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas while working at The Mirage and Caesar’s Palace in the early 2000s. One of his more unique assignments? Dressing in a toga to accompany the Caesar’s Cleopatra character to bestow casino winners with gold medallions, which was a marketing program at the time. After graduating, Brophy began a storied career with Hyatt Hotels, living in nine different cities over the course of the next decade. He would also serve in leadership roles with The Ritz-Carlton, and Don CeSar Beach Resort at Postcard Inn before making his way to Omni Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Montelucia. “My wife, son, and I joke that we need to stop going on vacations because when we do, we move to the destination,” says Brophy, who visited the Valley and fell in love with it less than a year before making the move to Scottsdale. Now settled in, Brophy is excited to show guests several enhancements, including extensive updates to the adult pool, Joya Spa, and the culinary program at the resort. 20

GENERAL MANAGER FAIRMONT SCOTTSDALE PRINCESS Jack Miller, who grew up in Florida, was captain of his football team in high school and recruited by colleges nationwide until an injury in the final game his senior year sidelined him from playing competitively ever again. Down but never out, the enterprising Miller soon focused his competitive energy in another direction: the Holiday Inn. “I got a reputation for two things—helping in every department, and coming up with big ideas,” says Miller, who at 22 became the youngest-ever person to be named general manager for the brand. For the next 30 years, innovating at hotels across North America became his life’s work. By the late 1990s, Miller was regional vice president of Intercontinental Hotels. He also married a fellow hospitality professional, Shea, and was busy raising four children. In 2009, he was named general manager of the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess. “I set out to make the resort the center of the community, despite the recession,” says Miller, who helped re-imagine the Princess as a culinary mecca, signing on nationally regarded chefs Michael Mina and Richard Sandoval to open concepts Bourbon Steak, La Hacienda, and Toro Latin Rum Bar on-site, as well as developing their own concepts, such as casual eatery Ironwood American Kitchen and Plaza Bar. He also founded Christmas at the Princess, and during summers, developed a similar program focused on fireworks and pool activities. Miller even spearheaded the resort’s ongoing relationship with the Waste Management Phoenix Open, and has poured nearly $100 million into improvements and renovations over the past decade. The result? The Princess has grown from 400 employees to 1,200, and is currently the best-performing Fairmont resort worldwide.

ronen aviram

Ronen Aviram grew up exploring the world. His father’s career required travel, and so as a child, Aviram was able join him on numerous road trips around the country, and then later, cities all over Europe and the Middle East. “I was always enamored with the different hotels around the world and the unique experiences they offered,” he says. This led him to take a summer job at the Clarion Hotel in New Jersey one summer while home from college. He started as a bellman/van driver, but jumped in to help out wherever he could. Within two weeks on the job, he was promoted to front desk agent. That work ethic and drive would define his career. After receiving his master’s degree in hotel and food service management, he was immediately recruited by Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts— and he’s been in demand ever since. Aviram has worked in every continental U.S. time zone, with his career taking him to the Regent Beverly Wilshire, Four Seasons Resort Aviara, Four Seasons Resort Jackson Hole, Fairmont Scottsdale Princess, Fairmont Dallas, and Swissotel Chicago. After a stint away, since being part of the opening team, Aviram was recruited back to Hotel Valley Ho in 2016. Under his watch the hotel has thrived, winning awards such as the 2019 Reader’s Choice Awards // No. 8 Top Hotels in the Southwest and West from Condè Nast Traveler. He’s worked with his team to develop unique and exciting experiences, whether through the spa, culinary offerings, events, summer chefs and farmers’ market, working with the local arts community, and more. “We want this to be a place where visitors can hang out where the locals go—that’s what we want people to say about Hotel Valley Ho,” he says. “And we aim to show everyone that we appreciate that they came through our doors.”

Do you... ...feel like you’ve mastered some areas of your life, yet feel unfulf illed? ...feel lonely, even if you are in a relationship? ...often feel embarrassed or regretful over things you do when you’re angry? ...feel like stress may be the death of you? ...want to feel more in control of your emotions and your life? While men can go to many coaches, my strengths are getting to the bottom of real issues and getting past the barriers that men naturally carry. I have been counseling men for over 20 years and I know how to meet them where they are to see more possibilities in relationships and in everyday life.

We really like to cater to those types of organizations, because as I grew up and I saw my mom working so hard in the nonprofit world, the big, giant, well-run organizations usually are the ones who got the lion’s share of the donations. … I’m not saying that we don’t donate to those organizations, but I like to donate to organizations that cater to people they can touch

MASTERING YO U R THINKING

“WE’RE ALL NORMAL WHEN WE HAVE EMOTIONS, WHEN WE STRUGGLE IN LIFE,” SAYS CHRISTY MAXEY, MC. “Those are normal things in life and it’s part of the human experience.” So are feeling sad, overwhelmed, stuck, having negative thoughts, and relationship challenges. Knowing how to process those feelings, thoughts, and struggles— essentially elevating your “emotional resilience”—so that you can thrive is something that Maxey has dedicated her career to teaching. She has a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s of counseling, both from Arizona State University, and spent 20 years as a therapist in a private psychotherapy practice. From working with thousands of clients during that time, she realized there were common recurring themes—feeling depression or anxiety, relationship issues, unhappiness with their lives and themselves, and feeling stuck. Knowing that she wanted to help a broader audience she decided to transition into coaching, becoming a personal development coach. “I realized I wanted to be part of a movement for people who didn’t need a diagnosis, but needed skills or healing from the past,” she says. “This is for anyone who wants to do any kind of inner personal growth work. Personal Development Coaching will help you with the relationship you have with yourself, with others and with your life.” Maxey explains that many times people have unresolved issues because they don’t know how to address them. “Nobody teaches us how to work through things appropriately,” she says. “I work with people who are successful in their business or career, who might be married with three beautiful children, and who still feel they don’t measure up or feel fulfilled. What I teach people is how to manage their emotions—everyone should learn how to manage their emotions so that they can become emotionally resilient—and how to clear limiting beliefs that keep them unhappy. You learn about yourself and you learn skills that help you create a life you want.” Maxey works with men, women, and, if it’s the right fit, teenagers. Her treatment specializations include personal development, 40

She has also taken her training, education, and experience and created the MaxxMethod: A Psychological Framework for Self-Mastery, a method that she uses to help her clients become the master of their thinking, their emotions, and their dreams. She has written a workbook using this framework that will be available on Amazon early this month. She works with people and couples locally, nationally, and internationally, both at her office (she has one at Camelback Road and 32nd Street in Phoenix, and one in Mesa) and via Zoom, and offers an intensive 8-week program as well as one-on-one coaching. “I love what I do because people make changes,” she says. “They learn how to build a foundation of true self-worth, and that’s priceless. It’s easy to work with people who want to make change and feel better, but they just don’t know how to do it.” When Maxey isn’t coaching others, she’s an avid hiker and loves being adventurous and traveling to places like Montana and Colorado. “Life is meant to be enjoyed, and that’s what I like to help people with,” she says. “People suffer needlessly because they don’t know how to make it better.
