In the past few months, we’ve heard about “these uncertain and challenging times”. What I have learned through this quarantine period is just the opposite. The hard times faced have brought a sense of certainty to a community like Grosse Pointe. “We the people” are the engine of compassion. We take action to help neighbors and community. We work daily as individuals to better ourselves and our families. That rugged spirit to succeed, build, and flourish is the very dynamic which allows us to help others when society calls. We position the community to benefit from our ability to withstand hard times and assist our neighbors at the same time. It is these times when the true heart of Grosse Pointers beats the loudest. We have been through a crisis that has taken hundreds of lives in Grosse Pointe and been devastating to the economy. Our hearts go out to the families who have lost loved ones or lost jobs or businesses. No words or compassion can make that better. We can

WHAT DO YOU DO?

HOMETOWN HEROES

President, Healthcare Operations & Chief Operating Officer of Henry Ford Health System.

THE MEN ON THE FRONT-LINE

HOW HAS COVID-19 AFFECTED YOUR WORK DAY?

With the onset of COVID 19 my days quickly turned into 16 hour days, 7 days per week. Managing that coplextity with a combination of zoom, webex, skype, phone and every other mechanism out there. We had to go into crisis incident command mode and prioritize on serving our patients; providing a safe environment for our employees, and excelerating innovation around how care is delivered.

robert g. riney

DO YOU HAVE ANY INSPIRING STORIES THAT YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE? This crisis reaffirmed how blessed I am to work with truly mission focused colleagues. The particular heroism that impacted me the most was the role that our nurses and physicians had to play of being the communicator between critically ill patients and their loved ones during this time when no visitors could be allowed. Specifically, learning of team members that held hands, sang, provided spiritual support and anything else that comforted a patient as they passed away, will be something that I will never forget. On a brighter side, I am awed by seeing the joy in the eyes of our caregivers every time they wheel a patient that has been discharged after successfully battling COVID 19, out of the hospital to recover at home. It speaks volumes to me about their character. WHAT HAS THIS TAUGHT YOU? In times of crisis, when much is expected of you, focus on what is needed most, on what you can control and/or significantly influence. Put aside all other issues and revisit them when you reach stability. 14

The first day there were two of us, some days as many as 20 (properly socially distanced, we would walk in front of the Hospital as a group and pray for the patients, staff, and all hospital workers at St. John and the whole world). So many nurses, doctors and other staff have stopped to thank us - telling us the comfort they have received having people praying for them and their patients. One patient, Autumn, told us that when she was in the emergency room - the nurses there comforted her by telling her, “Don’t worry, there is a group of people outside the hospital right now praying for you.” Autumn said, “I knew when they told me that, I was going to be OK.” And praise God, she was - she was released that day and Autumn said her fever broke, and all her shortness of breath were

That is amazing! The second thing I learned was to pray expectantly. We begged God to heal Autumn and begged Him to let her know He did it. Every day, people send intentions for prayer - many for Covid infected people….or for the families of people who died from Covid. Others for people who have

Consistent with the governor’s guidelines, all city facilities with the exception of open spaces in our parks have been closed. ROBERT E. NOVITKE, M AY O R , C I T Y O F GROSSE POINTE WOODS 1. WHAT MEASURES IS THE CITY TAKING TO ENSURE OUR SAFETY? Our City has taken numerous measures to attempt to protect our residents, employees and the general public, including educating our employees in the appropriate manner in which to interact with our residents and the general public, both in routine and emergency situations; restricting access to playscapes or other areas prone to contamination; encouraging our residents, through our website and e-blasts, to utilize appropriate social distancing and protective measures; upon opening of our City Hall plans to utilize screening at our counter area, installation of hand sanitizer stations, and providing masks for those entering without such; and continuing development of COVID-19 strategies, as well as coordinating such actions with the other Grosse Pointe and Harper Woods communities. observing social distancing. 2. DO YOU HAVE AN INSPIRATIONAL STORY THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE? Community groups and individuals have stepped up to support local businesses and thank our public safety officers, public works employees, health care professionals, and other essential workers who have put themselves on the line for all of us. The City’s Grosse Pointe Boat Club with support from the City of Grosse Pointe Foundation raised enough funds to deliver hundreds of meals from locally owned restaurants to the City’s first responders, essential workers, and medical personnel at Henry Ford-Cottage and Beaumont Grosse Pointe. The club also provided food vouchers for workers at grocery and drug stores. One Grosse Pointe City resident ordered lunch from The Little Club for every City employee. And a Shores resident sent a generous check to the City, earmarked as a staff thank-you. It’s been inspiring to see people 1. WHAT MEASURES IS THE CITY TAKING TO ENSURE

G P YC ’s R e s p o n s e t o C OV I D - 1 9 SUPPORTING ITS COMMUNITY, MEMBERS AND EMPLOYEES

GROSSE POINTE SHORES, MI, APRIL 24, 2020 - THE GROSSE POINTE YACHT CLUB’S (GPYC) RESPONSE TO COVID-19 INCLUDES SHOWING APPRECIATION AND SUPPORT FOR ITS COMMUNITY, MEMBERS AND EMPLOYEES. First and foremost, the GPYC wanted to show its appreciation for all of the country’s essential workers. On April 15, the GPYC donated and delivered 250 meals to Ascension St. John Hospital in Detroit. The meals were prepared by the Club’s kitchen staff, and the funds for the food was donated by a

group of GPYC members. The Club also has a supportive banner on display on the fence by Lake Shore Road. It reads “Not All Heroes Wear a Cape. Thank You to All Front Line Workers.” The banner includes photos of a police officer, a grocery store employee, a fireman, postal worker and healthcare professionals. The Club partnered with Towar Productions to have the banner created. Another important part of the GPYC’s mission during this time is to take care of its employees. Just like most businesses in the area, the Club has had to lay off most of its employees -- many of whom need to be on the property to complete their job. To ease the stress of these layoffs, the GPYC has made the commitment to continue health care coverage for its full-time employees (anyone working 32 hours or more per week). As for its members, the GPYC has been connecting with members by offering Curbside Carryout. This service is also available to Grosse Pointe Shores residents. GPYC members have also been enjoying virtual events such as “Happy Hour,” where one of the Club’s bartenders demonstrates how to make various cocktail recipes via Zoom. In an effort to thank members during this difficult period, the Club’s Board has offered all members spending food and beverage credits over the next transitional months. The Grosse Pointe Yacht Club was founded in 1914 by a group of 25 sailing and iceboating enthusiasts. Located on the shore of Lake St. Clair in Grosse Pointe Shores, Mich., the private marina and sailing club is a member of the Detroit Regional Yacht-racing Association (DRYA). For the second year in a row, Grosse Pointe Yacht Club has been awarded the prestigious Distinguished Club award, as determined by the annual Distinguished Clubs award program conducted by BoardRoom magazine, one
