DO YOU HAVE ANY CHILDHOOD MEMORIES OF SUMMER YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE? One memory that comes to mind is the year my brother and I went to Camp Summit through Lee’s Summit Parks and Recreation. We had so much fun swimming, running around the playground and playing games in the gym with our friends. My fondest summer memories are those spent with family. Family vacations were mostly spent camping with our cousins or going to the National Veteran Wheelchair Games to support my stepdad and to volunteer to help other wheelchair athletes.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PASTIME DURING THE HEAT OF SUMMER? We love to get in the water! Our family goes to several lakes in the area and visits with family and friends at their pool. This year our daughters are really interested in water balloons and water toys.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE ICE CREAM FLAVOR?
We love going to Stockton Lake with our kids and spending time connecting as a family every weekend we can get away! Our kids look forward to tubing and finding quiet coves to swim and fish in. It’s become a special place for our family full of fun memories!
Ice cream is definitely a summer favorite for my family. I have had Type One Diabetes for the last 28 years so I don’t get to partake in the family fun as often as I’d like. But, every once in awhile, when my blood sugar is a little low, I get to sneak a little cookies & cream!

DO YOU HAVE ANY CHILDHOOD MEMORIES OF SUMMER YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE?
More than anything, my favorite childhood memories are playing with friends in the neighborhood. We rode bikes, played baseball, soccer, golf and just had fun. We would go out in the morning and play until the street lights came on. Those were simple and fun times.
My favorite memories of summer were being part of the neighborhood swim team. I started swimming for the team when I was six years old, and by the time I was eight, I would ride my bike to practice about a mile away at 8:00 A.M. Our swim meets were always on Saturdays and I remember leaving our house around 6:00 AM. I still have a box in the basement with all of the ribbons and medals!

Letter from the Editor AUGUST IS TRADITIONALLY OUR ISSUE THAT WE DEDICATE TO KIDS AND PETS. It signifies the end of summer and kids getting ready to go back to school. This year is different for many reasons, but the unknown of what this coming school year will look like for our local youth is looming over many of us with kids ready to return to their routine. I can’t help but think of some of the big milestones and experiences that may be lost this year.

I am internally struggling the most with my high school senior who doesn’t have time to make up the things that will be lost. The list of experiences and opportunities that were supposed to occur this year for him that no longer will is extensive—and the list of unknowns is probably just as long. All of our kids are missing things that are important to them or that could impact their future. They are going through something that none of us have ever had to experience in our lifetime, and yet I am impressed with how I see them handling it. Not only do I recognize a strong resilience in them, but also I am witnessing kids in our community get innovative and step up to make a difference to those in need at this

Let’s remember to show some additional love and patience to the kids in our lives and community this fall as things are far from what they are used to, and they have all lost valuable and important experiences. Some kids are easy to shower with attention, love, and praise or extend grace to because they know how to receive it well, but the ones who push you away or struggle with receiving it are often the ones that need it the most. As summer comes to a close, take this time to give a little extra support to our youth. Love, Angela

shortages in the $150,000 range for young millennials to purchase. And the current pandemic situation makes everyone’s decisions all over the board. WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST REQUESTED HOME AMENITY OR LATEST TREND? Buyers are looking for homes with space and outdoor amenities right now due to the fact that we have all recently spent so much time at home. Home office space is very desirable, too. HOW HAS THE CURRENT COVID-19 SITUATION IMPACTED BUYING AND SELLING IN 2020? WHAT UNIQUE CHALLENGES DOES IT PRESENT TO THE BUYING/SELLING PROCESS? COVID has affected the real estate process from a practical standpoint as far as scheduling appointments. During the buying process, agents previously could schedule overlapping appointments on highly competitive price points ($300,000 and lower). Quite often, we would be in a house with other agents and buyers in different locations in the home. Now we have to take more time to schedule appointments since there are no overlapping showings. This translates into more time spent scheduling appointments and more advanced notices to get into a property. This requires more flexibility from buyers for availability to view homes and more flexibility from the seller to be out of their home for the showings. For sellers, it means if they are currently living in their home, they need to disinfect the home when returning to their home. While agents and buyers are wearing masks and gloves, we still very much want sellers to be diligent in disinfecting the property to protect themselves.
“DE-CLUTTER TO MAKE YOUR HOME SPACIOUS AND SHOWCASE THE THINGS THAT DREW YOU TO THE PROPERTY WHEN YOU PURCHASED IT.”

quently during the decision-making process this spring. It makes it all the more important to have an agent be a reliable, trusted source of information who can help you navigate and stay on course to achieve your home selling/purchasing goals. We truly care about our clients’ overall well-being and try our best to provide a common sense approach to the transaction process. We personally coach our team members to do the same. We also spent a large amount of time during our quarantine checking on our clients outside of their real estate needs. IS ZILLOW A RELIABLE SOURCE FOR REAL ESTATE INFORMATION? No, Zillow is free to the public because agents pay for the individual’s contact information. While it remains a useful general tool, it is always better to have access to the Multiple Listing Service through contact with a trusted agent. Zillow is a marketing site that does not have to abide by any governing body for accuracy on pricing or inventory. have cats or dogs, they don’t often get to experience cattle and other farm animals. She said although they are large and strong animals that can potentially be dangerous, they are also gentle enough to pet and interact with. Kevin said when he was growing up, his grandparents lived in Arkansas and raised cows, which gave him a love for cattle. Currently, they have 139 head of cows. They also direct-sell the steers for beef, an option many are considering given the current meat shortage at grocery stores, and he welcomes people to contact him for more information on buying beef. The addition of the three buffalo to the ranch was rather recent, and he got them from a regional auction. “They are just a beautiful, majestic animal,” Kevin says. Kevin and Renee both admit that many of the animals on the farm are not hurting for attention. Kevin says some of his cows are spoiled, but it might not end with just the cows. “The goats and donkey like getting fed,” Renee says. “They are spoiled rotten!” 22

Say it louder with color!” Her approach for portraits remains consistent among different subjects — considering different variables to highlight what makes them unique. “Portraiture is all about using different lighting setups based on your subject, think hair color, skin tone, and even age of the subject,” she says. “I focus my lighting techniques with animals to bring out their unique traits and characteristics — so I’m considering the length of coat, stature, their eyes...how I can light the subject to bring out the unique characteristics of the animal.” When considering colors for the background of a personal photoshoot, she will select one based on what she’s feeling that day or pick a color she hasn’t used in a while to spice things up. Ultimately, she doesn’t want her work to be tied to any specific color family, so she will throw neutral colors or an unexpected bold color into the mix. She mentions that her CONTINUED >

portfolio showcases a lot of pinks and pastel blues, primarily because she likes the way dogs pop off of pastel colors. “I’m endlessly fascinated by creating and shaping light,” she says. “You can change the [message] of an image with the placement, shape and angle of light. This also affects the mood of the image. Just a slight change of light modifier can take the image from flat to dramatic.” During a photoshoot, Pusateri says she is always moving and will typically hit her step goal on shoot days well before lunch. “The style of my shooting is really animated,” she says. “Like I’m laying down, tummy-first stretched out on the floor... or I’m pretzeled into some other position to get that shot. I’m not sure how other photographers work — but for as long as my body is able to do so I will 110% sacrifice any of my own personal comfort to get that shot.” She adds that anticipation, composition and timing contribute to a successful photoshoot. “Animals don’t have the same patience that humans do to sit still for a session, so it’s anticipating movement and being quick to capture those magical moments when you have their attention and they’re hitting their mark,” she says. Working with animals presents its own challenges, like the communication barrier or short attention spans, but she has found many benefits in her work, like the joy dogs bring to set. “My family didn’t have pets growing up, so for a girl who asked Santa for a puppy every year — I’ve got the dream job!” she says. MOOSE IS AN ADORABLE 6-MONTH-OLD GOLDENDOODLE PUP WHO STRUTS THE STREETS OF LEE’S SUMMIT ACCOMPANIED BY HIS OWNER, CARLI DIMARCO. His hysterical personality has turned the people of downtown Lee’s Summit into raving fans. DiMarco explains,”The downtown Lee’s Summit area is so dog-friendly. People are always so genial, and all of the business owners are accommodating.” DiMarco is starting a project called “Moose Approved” to highlight businesses in the area that Moose loves to visit that are pet-friendly. “I love seeing how well our community accommodates, and I want to find a way to give back.” Dimarco, who grew up as an athlete and is still very physically active, explains that her pup’s high energy personality matches her lifestyle. “We are the perfect fit because we both love to play fetch, go on runs, and enjoy the outdoors,” says DiMarco. “As every human does, I’ve had a lot of tough seasons. Personally, my dogs give me an emotional connection different than human nature can. Their mood doesn’t change with the situation around them and their comfort doesn’t depend on convenience. Ultimately, they’re a constant in a world full of chaos.”

Think carefully about the proposed terms of a divorce settlement
The process of divorcing is often complex and difficult. There are a few things that make this even more challenging. Having numerous assets or having an ex who is not willing to work to come to mutually agreeable terms are two of these. Individuals might not want to think about having to battle things out in court, but it may be necessary if the settlement negotiations are not successful. Negotiating the terms of the divorce requires that both parties in the matter be willing to compromise. In most cases, neither party is going to get everything they want. Being able to think clearly about how various arrangements impact them
may help as they evaluate the potential options. It is usually best to think about what aspects of the end of the marriage they want to focus. For example, they might not care about what happens to the marital home, but they may want to keep their special art collection. In these cases, a strategy can be worked out that increases the chance of that happening. Determining what is truly important to them can also help them to save their energy for those matters. Parties should think about the long-term implications of the settlement. This includes taking a look at how the arrangements will affect their finances in the future. Assets that are costly to keep up might not be ideal when they are trying to survive solely on their own income. Therefore, it is important

RENOVATE & REFINE
DIY AT HOME THEATER WITH LEANN PARKER ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY LEANN PARKER
LEANN PARKER OF @SILVERTOOTHHOMES SHARES HOW TO TRANSFORM YOUR BACKYARD INTO A MOVIE THEATER FOR ENTERTAINING FAMILY OR FRIENDS. Our family had so much fun creating this At-Home Movie Theater party for our son Ezra’s 8th birthday. All you need is a projector and an outdoor space, but I wanted to jazz it up just a little bit more. I created a ticket booth and concession stand for a full movie theater experience to ensure that our movie night felt like our guests were actually going to a movie theater and not just our house. In attempt to achieve that, we set up a ticket booth at the front door using our kids old puppet theater. My daughter handed out tickets for guests to 40

use to “purchase” their popcorn, candy and drinks at the concession stand. I cut out red stars (from foam sheets) and stuck them to the floor (with adhesive putty) to lead guest through the house to the concession stand and back outside to where our movie was going to take place. Before entering our theater (aka our backyard), I set up a shadow box for guests to place their entry ticket. Finally, our guests could choose their seating on chairs or blankets around our yard. I also set up a little bug-spray table for people to grab as needed. Dramatic play, even as an adult, is so much fun! Who says staying home can’t be just as entertaining? I love displaying food in a creative way at our parties. I made this simple DIY Popcorn Display Wall as a statement piece in our concession stand. We have also used it in many other ways for other parties such as a donut wall, bagel wall, pretzel wall and more. You can easily recreate your own for your next party. PEGBOARD DISPLAY WALL + Pegboard (I chose the 4ft square size at Lowes for $10 and spray painted it white) + Optional frame (I bought two 1x4’s for $5 each, cut 2 pieces 4ft long and 2 pieces 3.5ft long, stained minwax walnut, attached to pegboard with screws through the back). + Twine to string popcorn bags (or if you’re using the pegboard display for donuts, bagels or pretzels then use golf tees hot glued into holes from behind!) + Clothes pins to hang popcorn bags + Popcorn bags TICKET BOOTH + Tickets + Ticket Booth (optional) CONCESSION STAND + Popcorn Machine (optional) + Popcorn + Popcorn flavors (for guests to get creative!) + Candy (boxes rather than bags for movie theater vibes!) + Soda (bottles rather than cans) + Napkins + Cupcake toppers & Plates (if its a birthday celebration) + Reused boxes and spray painted them white for guests to easily carry their snacks I hope you have as much fun at your party as we did! I’d love if you tagged me @silvertoothfarmhome so I can see your At-Home Movie Theater too!! In reflecting on the party, Ezra said that “the best part of the night was eating candy with my friends.” After all, people are what matter most! 42

+HANDCRAFTED+
FUN PAPER CRAFT ACTIVITY FOR YOU + YOUR KIDDO ARTICLE NICOLETTE MARTIN
M AT E R I A L S + Cardboard + White crepe paper + Construction paper + Glue + Scissors + Beads, yarn, pom poms, etc.
DIRECTIONS 1. Take your cardboard and cut two pieces into the shape of a llama (we found a stencil online). Then, cut strips of cardboard the depth you want your llama to be. You’ll connect these to either side of the llama cutouts to enclose your piñata. 2. Glue your strip of cardboard all along the edge of one side of your llama, then glue to the other side. (Be sure to leave a hole you can close up later so you can fill it with your favorite candy!)
PIÑLLAMA
3. Starting at the neck, cover the front, back and sides of your llama with white crepe paper, cutting a slit every half inch or so to create the traditional piñata look. 4. Cover all remaining sides of the neck and head with white construction paper, cut to fit your design. 5. Using construction paper, beads, pom poms, tassels, buttons, etc., add some flair to the rest of your llama! Bonus points for incorporating different shapes and textures into your final product.
