Upon arrival, my mother and I would walk past the racks of beautiful clothes and ride the escalator down two floors to the basement, discussing on the way down what to look at first . . . the crystal? The silverware? The china? It was all glorious to us. I had my silverware pattern picked out when I was 16 years old and started receiving place settings for Christmas. I still use them today. They weren't cheap, but I'd say they've lasted. And isn't that the point? Don't think we didn't shop for clothing too, because we did. Oh, we did. A roughly five-hour drive can provide local, suburb-weary residents all Charleston has to offer, and Chief Marketing Officer Kris Altman said The Vendue, steps from Charleston’s iconic Waterfront Park and the Charleston Harbor, “puts you directly in the thick of it.” Located in Charleston’s historic French Quarter, the Vendue is named for the auctions once held here and is comprised of two different properties located across the street from each other. Created from historic warehouses built in the late 18th and early 19th centuries that included bedrooms upstairs for seafarers and fisherman, 19 Vendue and 26 Vendue offer 84 unique guest rooms furnished with period antiques and reproductions. And although the rooms are outfitted with modern amenities, they have not surrendered their wide, heart pine floors, exposed brick, wooden beams, high ceilings and functioning fireplaces that acknowledge their original architecture. Style Runs Deep ARTICLE JENNIFER CONFORTI PHOTOGRAPHY JENNIFER CONFORTI

Jamie Georgia shows her style

JAMIE GEORGIA, OWNER & EXPERT STYLIST AT TRIBAL CHICK, PUSHES THE BOUNDARIES OF FASHION CONVENTION. STEP ONE FOOT THROUGH THE DOOR AND IMMEDIATELY YOU KNOW THIS IS NOT YOUR MAMA’S CLOTHING STORE. A blast of colors, patterns and textures disturb, in the most positive way, what you’ve always known to be the “right way to dress”. The intrigue pulls you in, mouth open with thoughts of “What do I look at first?!” Animal prints and torn pants, leather cuffs and graphic tees, none like you’ve ever seen before. I felt tantalized and exhilarated with every turn of my head. What was this fresh new look that I didn’t even know existed? All I knew was I wanted more. That was my first experience at Tribal Chick and, I tell you, I have been obsessed ever since. Creativity and new ideas were encouraged in Jamie’s home. “I was born with a creative spirit and my mother encouraged me to be original. She didn’t hold me 16

to a specific look nor was I forced to buy anything off the rack.” Jamie’s maternal grandmother, Elma Thornton, endearingly called “Itey” (pronounced “eye-tea”) was a gifted seamstress and would make for Jamie anything her heart desired. “I wanted a red check dress with a green apple pocket and I got it. It wasn’t just coming up with ideas with her either. I would be dragged to the fabric store! We would be there for hours picking out fabrics and thread and buttons. She taught me the mechanics of fashion and I am passionate about passing down my heritage to my own grandchildren because of her example.” Jamie’s paternal grandmother, Naomi “Dedox” (pronounced dee-docs) House, was also an interior designer. So, you see, her talent runs deep in the genes… and jeans! Oh, the jeans. Side note: I asked Jamie about her grandmothers' distinctive nicknames thinking there was some beautiful meaning since I had never heard of those names before. She giggled and said, “honestly, we have no idea where they came from! Just always called them Itey and Dedox. They were both powerful and independent women. They were a huge influence on me.” Jamie, an interior designer by trade, started making jewelry from vintage pieces she had and discovered that people loved her style. She started selling her handmade jewelry in local shows and ladies started noticing her clothes, which she was designing as well. She found she could help women come up with distinctive looks, work with a local seamstress and create one of a kind pieces. Her clients came back for more. On June 18, 2016, Tribal Chick opened its doors on the square in Fayetteville and she hasn’t looked back. In fact, she has already moved to a larger location just down the street at 397 South Glynn St. in Fayetteville and I, for one, am thrilled . . . more room to play! Jamie’s personal style is a beautiful, eclectic mix of fun patterns, textures and layers, layers, layers. Her clothes are an outward expression of her whimsical spirit. But, here’s the deal, when you ask Jamie to style you, she is sensitive to ask you what your comfort level is. She understands that her look is not for everyone. Jamie confided, “I have to take a deep breath when ladies tell me they want to look “age-appropriate”. I will gently push them to their limit, then pull back a little and we end up where they want to be. We want our looks to complement our client’s existing wardrobe. When they leave, they know they are really cared for.” I hope you treat yourself to a visit. You deserve some Tribal Chick in your life. I know I do.

JEWELRY FROM THE HEART LOCAL ARTISAN CREATES ONEOF-A-KIND PIECES

LOCAL JEWELRY DESIGNER SUSANNE AUDETTE’S

BEAUTIFUL

CREATIONS

REACHES FAR BEYOND WHAT THE EYE SEES. Each piece that Susanne creates is impassioned by her own story and those of her cherished customers. In 2001, the Audettes’ youngest of three sons, Nicholas, was born with Spina Bifida. By the age of 9 months, Nicholas was receiving physical therapy about three times a week, leaving the family with hefty medical bills. To cover the costs, Susanne turned her childhood love of dabbling with jewelry into a more serious endeavor, by making and selling silver jewelry at home parties, her kids’ schools and craft shows. Now, 18 years later, Susanne continues to care for her family and grow her company, Monili Bei Designs (“beautiful jewelry” in Italian), while creating jewelry from the heart. 18

Fayette County Lifestyle | September 2020

ARTICLE ANNIE SINGH-QUERN | PHOTOGRAPHY DEBBIE MCFARLAND AND PROVIDED Susanne spends the weekdays in her home studio (made by hubby Todd), tending to her craft. Outside the window, above Susanne’s desk, Cardinals and Blue Birds flit at vintage feeders as Susanne reflects and sketches her next creations with stones, silver and beads. “As silly as it sounds I let the pieces talk to me.” she said. For her pendants and fine silver pieces, she either carves a design into a soft mold or makes a drawing onto a plate. It could be a leaf, flower or any of her vintage buttons collected over the many years of traveling abroad. She then enters a nine-step process to mold, dry, clean, fire, tumble, patina and finally, mount. The days when she is not working on a pendant or earring, Susanne spends her time beading, wire wrapping, stitching or silversmithing. She added, “I have the freedom to create what my heart literally desires.” One of most memorable pieces Susanne ever designed was a birthday/anniversary gift for a customer’s friend whose husband was suffering from cancer. The special request came to Susanne while she was traveling and after reflecting on it, the concept surfaced - a bangle of twisted silver inscribed with a personal message. “I texted from the airport to say how excited I was that I had finally come up with an idea. She replied that her friend’s husband had passed away that morning just before her birthday and their anniversary. "My tears fell the whole time I worked on the piece, but what an honor to do it for her in memory of her husband.” Another commissioned project for Susanne came from costume designer Louise Frogley to create three styled pieces for Michelle Pfeifer’s part in the movie, Ant Man and The Wasp. In essence, Monili Bei Designs are classic pieces that are simple, easy to wear or layer, and affordable. They are made from a single pearl, crystal or stone. Susanne advises jewelry lovers to invest in a piece that they really like and will wear regularly. In the same vein, she advises against trendy or plated jewelry because they just “fade with time.” The designer’s jewelry pieces made are .925 sterling or .999 fine silver, 14k gold filled (sterling under CONTINUED >

gold), semi-precious stones, and vintage components. For layering necklaces, Susanne recommends choosing silver or gold or both. Start with a short choker (16”) without a drop. Then, add a 18” chain with a smaller drop (optional). The longest necklace (28”-30”) can hold a cluster pendant at the bottom. This simple layering effect will create an elegant look for everyday wear or a special occasion. Caring for jewelry is an important part of owning it. Although sterling can always return to its original shine, air and body oils can tarnish the silver. To protect the jewelry, store it in a small plastic bag and seal it tightly. If the piece is tarnished, just quickly dip it in a silver cleaner (do not soak in the liquid). Then, rinse in cold water and dry. When traveling with multiple necklaces, encircle a twist tie around the chains, store them, and then when ready to use, just pull on the twist tie and the long pieces will emerge untangled from the bag. You’ll find Monili Bei Designs at the Peachtree City Farmers Market on Saturdays. Here, the Audettes proudly display beaded necklaces, silver earrings and other oneof-a-kind pieces, all at reasonable prices. Though her business has an online presence, the designer prefers person-to-person contact with her customers. She also consigns at a few local shops and is a dealer at art shows. When Susanne is not creating or selling, she’s learning. Lately, she’s taken up a Precious Metal Clay class in addition to a soldering & stone setting workshop. She also strengthens her craft through online videos.

Creating & Caring for Jewelry TIP 1 Combine two-part molding compound to make a mold of a vintage button. Push Precious Metal Clay into the mold for it to take shape. Air dry for 30 to 60 minutes. Contour shape with a sanding disc.

The word charcuterie translates to “pork-butcher shop” and in France, the person who prepares the meat is called a Charcutier. There are several different types and styles of charcuterie, and while the original French translation refers to pork, we - individuals and restaurant establishments - have become incredibly creative with a

variety of different meats and accompaniments. The most common charcuterie meats are capicola, salami and prosciutto but any cured meat will do. When it comes to serving charcuterie, presentation is everything. Natural wood boards are a popular option because it gives the charcuterie board a trendy and rustic look. If you want to create an upscale aesthetic, slate serving ware is an excellent option. An ideal charcuterie board has a good balance of flavors and textures and has items that contrast and complement each other - not only in taste but also in appeal. There’s nothing more appetizing than a well-prepared charcuterie board. While charcuterie has been around for hundreds of years, more and more restaurants have added charcuterie to their menus and people are creating charcuterie at home. The artisanal qualities, the simplicity, the vibrant colors and the number of items you can put onto a board lend to the appeal and fun dining experience.

“IT’S NOT ABOUT HOW MUCH MONEY YOU MAKE. IT’S ABOUT PROVIDING VALUE TO FOLK S FAR BEYOND WHATEVER IT IS THAT THEY ARE PAYING FOR .” BOB ROSATO IS CONSIDERED ONE OF THE BEST SPORTS PHOTOJOURNALISTS IN THE INDUSTRY. He's not only credited for 85 Sports Illustrated covers and hundreds of thousands of images published worldwide, he continues to receive respect and recognition from photographers he has guided and mentored throughout his career. Although Bob has embarked upon a new venture, he still loves his sports. Born and raised in Miami, Bob had many hobbies and interests and could have been anything he wanted to be. After college he chose to fulfill his desire to be a policeman, which he did for six years and loved every minute of it. As one of those litany of hobbies Bob had as a child, his mother was into photography - not heavily into it but she developed her own pictures and had a bunch of cameras laying around the house - all of which Bob played and experimented with. This was serendipitous for the unanticipated world-class sports photographer. Bob never imagined that returning to one of his favorite childhood hobbies would land him a 35-year sports media career. In the summer of 1986, Bob left the police department to become a freelance photographer and joined the NFL as a major contributor to the National Football League. This

spent the better part of 20 years. During those years, Bob saw a growing need in the sports photo industry and responded by launching a company in 2003 called US Presswire, which was ultimately purchased in 2011 by the Gannett Company - USA Today. The acquisition resulted in Bob leaving Sports Illustrated and becoming the Chief Operating Officer of the newly branded Sports Images division of USA Today, which became the largest dedicated sports image service in the nation. Bob stayed with USA Today until June of last year when it was time to leave corporate America and immerse himself in the fresh, rich sauce of Your Pie. With retirement in mind, Bob knew that franchising was the direction he wanted to take. After a five-year search examining everything from indoor go-cart racing to food concepts and everything in between, Bob settled on the Your Pie franchise for its outstanding product and community-focused franchise leadership. The first of two restaurants opened in September 2016 and music to his ears is when customers ask whether the restaurant is a franchise. That question is affirmation for Bob setting up a backboard camera.

Bob that a good job was done at decorating and crafting the restaurants to look and feel like a natural part of their local community.

Both the Peachtree City and LaGrange restaurants benefit from Your Pie's Mobile Oven. This part of the operation does more than make and bake pizza. Of course it generates revenue but what it also generates - something most can't begin to quantify - is community good will. Spend any amount of time with Bob and you will find him to be kind and willing to share his knowledge and gains. Similar to the days during his sports media career when he conducted workshops and groomed countless photographers under his tutelage, Bob will tell you today that "opening doors and opportunities for young people is centric to who I am." COZY KITCHEN: The kitchen is truly the heart of this home. The decision to use various textures and finishes makes this space unique, yet inviting. The focal point of this kitchen is the striking metal hood which combines zinc and brass strapping. The lighting and cabinet hardware pull in the warm tones of the brass, while the stainless appliances create a cool contrast.

L A U N D RY R O O M : In this modern farmhouse, we took a utilitarian space and made it beautiful! The mixed-use of metals ranges from Unlaquered brass, to polish chrome and stainless steel. The warm tone of the painted cabinets gives a pop of color, with the arm light behind offering an unexpected contrast. The polished chrome traditional faucet and polished chrome cabinet hardware give a shiny metal texture, while the appliances are matte steel.

ayette County Lifestyle Editor Byron Pugh’s old BMW had 90,000 miles. “I’ve always wanted a Jeep. I like the idea of being able to take the top and doors off. Our daughter, Abby, loves to ride. Abby has special needs, so anything that makes her happy makes us happy.” Byron test-drove a Jeep Gladiator at Cronic Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM. He liked how it drove, but he was looking for a max towing package. So Cronic special ordered his perfect Gladiator. “It’s very versatile,” he said. “The Gladiator can tow up to 7650 pounds, which is unusual for a Jeep. It’s the only top-off pick-up truck that has tow capacity.” Byron’s wife Jennifer Conforti, Publisher, said about Cronic, “They were very pleasant

and very attentive to us, but with no pressure.” They appreciated the sales manager John Pitts arranging a fair trade, and a loaner Jeep Gladiator for two weeks until their custom order arrived. Cronic was offering employee discounts for Jeeps. Byron said, “I looked at the Gladiator at other dealerships when it first came out and they were wanting a $5,000 premium for them.” Rather than paying far more than sticker price, Byron and Jennifer got a great deal. With COVID-19 manufacturing shortages, and shipping limitations, Cronic can still get customers their dream car. And Cronic enables customers to shop from home, all NISSAN

Jennifer says it’s like bringing Disney World home. “One of the biggest reasons why he wanted a Jeep is because of Abby. She, like a lot of kids with autism, enjoys the wind in her hair,” Jennifer says. “Byron bought a five-point harness for her, and he can take her all over town. I don’t think they’ve missed a night of going out for a ride since we’ve had it. She puts her hands up like she’s on a roller coaster. She absolutely loves it.”
