GIVEN ALL THAT HAS TAKEN PLACE IN OUR COUNTRY SINCE THE CALENDAR ROLLED OVER TO 2020, IT’S HARD TO BELIEVE THAT WE ARE JUST NOW AT THE HALFWAY POINT OF THE YEAR. Just as COVID-19 exploded on the scene at the deadline for our April issue, the tragic death of George Floyd, and all the fallout from this travesty, took place around the deadline for our July issue. We will be addressing this topic in more breadth in our August issue, but the tragic murders of Ahmaud Arbery and George Floyd created an awakening in a lot of us. Instead of simply resting on the notion of “not being racist”, I am realizing the responsibilities that white people have, in regards to playing a more active role in asking tough questions, listening, and standing arm and arm with the black community. WOODWORKING: MODERN, MINIMALIST AND MOUNTAIN VIBES IN JULIE ARNDT’S UNIQUE ART PIECES

ARTICLE LISA VAN HORNE | PHOTOGRAPHY KYLIE FITTS

A COLORADO NATIVE, JULIE ARNDT HAS BEEN DRAWN TO CREATIVE PURSUITS ALL HER LIFE. While becoming a professional artist often seemed a lofty dream to her growing up, it was in following the advice of learning to create without fear of judgment or failure that she turned that lifelong passion into a reality. “I’ve always identified as an artist,” says Julie. “Creating and designing have always been at the forefront of my life, and I was advised that, if I made what I love, then the right people would respond. So one day I decided to go for it.” With a background in printmaking, interior design and consistent dabbling in various other mediums, Julie found that woodworking was the pursuit that truly called to her. Completely self-taught, Julie sees each woodworking project as a big puzzle, favoring to visualize the end result in her mind rather than through sketches and seeing what happens as she brings the pieces together. “I love building something from nothing,” says Julie. “With woodworking, I get to use my hands and build all day. Wood can be so easily manipulated—you can start with one thing and end up with something entirely different depending on how you treat it.” Partial to working with pine with its native abundance in Colorado, Julie takes inspiration from her Colorado home’s immaculate outdoors and natural resources, often also using natural indigo to dye elements of her pieces. A self-proclaimed mountain girl through and through, her style is a blend of her passion for western culture and design—with its dusty desert tones and ample blue skies—and her focus on simple yet impactful aesthetics. Leaning on symmetry, rhythm and contrast in her style, her pieces often mix light and dark to give them eye-catching movement and interest. This style rooted in nature and defined by modernity speaks to Julie’s interior design style as well. Often incorporating ample natural texture, plants and wood into her designs, Julie works with her JA Design clients to create truly unique pieces made specifically for the project and the individual. As she continues her pursuit of creative inspiration, Julie looks forward to seeing how her art translates to her other areas of interest, including photography and the greater Denver area’s vibrant food scene. From making her own cutting boards to experimenting with new recipes, as Julie would say, she’s always on the hunt for that next inspiring moment.

WHISKEY WITH A CAUSE THE MEMBERS-ONLY COLORADO BOURBON AND RYE COLLECTORS ARE POURING THEIR HEART INTO PHILANTHROPY.

CRAVING A COOL AND COVERT COMMUNITY THAT SHARES YOUR LOVE OF BOURBON? Look no further than the connoisseurs of the spirit who have a heart as golden as the rye whiskey they’re sipping. Denver-native, Benjamin Rosen, grew up around whiskey-filled glasses at family gatherings where the older men, aptly named the “Crown Royal Club”, indulged in their drink of choice. He recalls a particular story when his great-grandfather famously said to his own father, “Rosen men don’t drink gin & tonic, we drink whiskey.” The spirit was as much a part of their legacy as the multi-generational and family-run scrap-metal business was. Rosen would join the company to work alongside his father and three siblings while also pursuing his affinity for whiskey. Starting with a collection of rare Japanese whiskey bottles would eventually evolve into Rosen's hobby-turned-charity, the Colorado Bourbon and Rye Collectors (CBRC). What began as a Facebook group of around 75 whiskey-lovers gushing over their favorite batches, became a nearly 1,000-member community when Rosen took over in 2017, realizing there was something more to unbottle here. “There are a lot of people in our area who are searching for the finer things in life. When they think of bourbon, they think of Pappy Van Winkle and a 25 Year Old Macallan,” says Rosen. “Those products are great, but we want to help people curate their own rare collections.”

GIVING BACK (CONTINUED)

CBRC (CBRCWhiskey.com) connects Colorado locals to the organization’s custom distillery releases along with private tastings hosted by reps from national brands, and charity events aimed at pouring their financial gains back into local organizations who need it the most. The group's paying members, currently only a handful of people, have access to limited bottlings, like their debut partnership with Nashville’s Belle Meade, where Rosen chose his favorite barrel selection, which was then bottled and branded exclusively for CBRC. When sourcing bourbon, he looks for something funky and fun, while putting an emphasis on working with Colorado distilleries, including Old Elk from Fort Collins and Mythology Distillery in Denver. Rosen has loved watching people’s attitudes as collectors shift: the idea of making memories over a spirit rather than watching bottles collect dust on the mantle. His vision to expand the mission of the group had him thinking, “we can’t just be a group of people who sit around and drink and talk about whiskey.” So, when a member opened up about a heart issue her daughter was born with, they began a fundraiser for the Colorado division of the Pediatric Congenital Heart Association and raffled bottles to one another, raising around $2,000. Last Memorial Day was their first charity event, where they raised nearly $25,000. In addition, for every bottle sold (between three and fifteen dollars, per bottle) they donate to charities chosen by the collective, like Children’s Hospital of Colorado. To date, they have raised around $90,000. Rosen’s next move is to buy sourced whiskey, age it in barrels here in Denver and bottle it with their own CBRC private label—refining his passion into philanthropy. When Rosen isn’t helping run the family business or seeking new charity recipients, his favorite bourbon to sip is a Wild Turkey 8 year old 101 proof, that he describes as “sweet black cherry heaven.” Cheers!

CAUSE FOR CHANGE

Recently, Sam Barotz, a board member of CBRC,

responded to the tragic events following the death of George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter movement by purchasing $1,500 in gift cards from Denver’s African American-owned bars and restaurants, like NOLA Voodoo Tavern and Wittier Cafe coffee shop, to be raffled off to CBRC members. 32

Who's In Your Cocktail Squad? ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY JIMENA ZAMORA

TODAY MORE THAN EVER WE FIND OURSELVES RELYING ON OUR COMMUNITY THE MOST. We are relying on our friends, family, coworkers, health workers, or any circle you find yourself part of to keep moving forward each day. Lauren and John, founders of Cocktail Squad, have like all of us, adjusted their lives and small business in a blink of an eye. They’ve had to find ways to keep the hustle going and keep their business growing in a changed environment. After speaking with them, there is definitely something that hasn’t changed, their commitment to the “squad life”. Cocktail Squad goes beyond crafted canned cocktails; the name says it all. It’s about bringing people together and sharing experiences, adventures, and maybe even some new activities with physical distance in mind. The portability of their products allows for “to-go experiences” and the idea that your squad can be with you wherever you go. But who is your Squad? Or what do you do now to find those special moments? Since concerts and music festivals have been cancelled for the summer, Lauren and John, who have great passion for connectivity with music in Colorado, have started “Squad Sessions”. This is an online Concert Cocktail Hour every Thursday which releases a music set from an artist recording from their home. As they like to say, this is the “fabric of their brand” - to support a community they believe in (encouraging visitors to donate to frontline causes) and provide some lightheartedness and a fun space for anyone that is missing social connections or who maybe just need to dance it off. So, who is your Cocktail Squad? Well, anyone. Anyone who reminisces on having a cold drink outside, daydreams of sandy beaches and backpacking adventures with family, someone who doesn’t take themselves too seriously and enjoys collaborations, great stories, and “cheersing” with friends or family. The Cocktail Squad name says it all. Different animals with no particular faces, with alternate goals and ways of life, but with the certainty that they are here in this world, sharing spaces, experiences, and coexisting together.
