AND SPENDING TIME WITH ONE ANOTHER. For my busy family, the table is one spot where we gather every evening to talk about our day in-between the demands of our schedules. It is a time to connect. Food often holds very special memories, and just the aroma can evoke emotions or moments from times past. The smell of a warm cinnamon apple crisp takes me right back to my mom’s kitchen in the fall. Nutmeg reminds me of my husband’s grandmother who believed almost everything tasted better with a little bit of nutmeg sprinkled in. My most treasured food memory that conjures the strongest emotion isn’t fancy in the slightest, but holds countless memories of time spent at my granddad’s kitchen table— a freshly baked cake made from a boxed mix in a 9x13 pan with canned frosting. My grandpa was widowed at 56 and lived down the street from my childhood home, so we spent a lot of time at his house. We always knew that he would have a cake on his counter ready for us to enjoy. I walked down to my granddad’s house a couple

art gallery ARTICLE ALLISON SWAN PHOTOGRAPHY PAUL VERSLUIS

NEARLY 30 YEARS AGO, PRAIRIEBROOKE ART GALLERY OPENED ITS DOORS IN DOWNTOWN OVERLAND PARK. Specializing in custom artwork consulting for offices, homes and spaces throughout the greater Kansas City area, the team at Prairiebrooke is in the business of making life beautiful. As a comprehensive art house, they do it all—from finding the perfect piece of art, designing custom framing and managing installation and placement. Megan Hoban is the president of this second-generation, woman-owned art business located in the heart of Johnson County. “We’re proud to have been recognized over the years for our achievements in arts, business and leadership,” Hoban says. The award-winning gallery is housed in a 6,000 square foot barrel-roof building built in 1928. Here, Prairiebrooke’s clients are treated to an extensive retail gallery, custom framing operation and corporate art headquarters. Over the last three decades, Hoban, her family and their trusted staff have provided art services to thousands of commercial and residential clients. Hoban, who joined her mother, Brooke Morehead, and the Prairiebrooke team 15 years ago as an art consultant, says that the art business is more than just work. “As the second-generation owner of Prairiebrooke, my joy is in connecting art and clients for a truly special space.” 18

Leawood Lifestyle | October 2019

Prairiebrooke curates artwork that reflects your unique and personal brand, image and style. “In a world full of art options online, having an art consultant to lead the way through the process is important. In corporate art consulting, designing an art plan that is consistent with a company’s image is even more crucial.” According to Hoban, this is what sets Prairiebrooke apart from other storefronts and online retailers. “As part of our process, the design goes beyond color and placement as we work to create a collection that complements a company’s vision and image to enhance the workspace for visitors and employees alike. Coordinating our in-house custom framing, delivery and installation make for a seamless project that is completed on time and on budget.” The Prairiebrooke team knows that well designed and placed artwork can greatly enhance a workspace or public area. “Art is a key design element that creates cohesion between the flooring, furniture, wall color and CONTINUED >

Pig & Finch

IS SERVING UP FRESH, MODERN PUB FAVORITES IN LEAWOOD’S PARK PLACE. French, British and American options are all on the menu ranging from pub classics to elegant dishes. Seth Welch is the gastropub’s general manager. “The 801 Restaurant Group was expanding their concepts and wanted to start a gastropub that had the feel of an old English pub, but still offered world-class food,” says Welch. “The company is based out of Des Moines, Iowa. The main export out of Iowa is pork, and the state bird is the goldfinch, so with that, Pig & Finch was born. “Chef Joshua Minnich has perfected this menu over the two and a half years he’s been here. What makes his food stand out is the unique flavor combinations that you won’t see anywhere else. Our pan seared scallops dish includes sweet corn, roasted cauliflower, grilled pears and Vadouvan, a french style curry blend. None of these ingredients are traditionally paired together, but with the rich buttery scallops, they create a dish layered with incredible flavor that is all tied perfectly together. For his signature dish, he takes a filet of Skuna Bay salmon and prepares it very similarly to how you would prepare and serve prime rib. It is roasted with the skin on with a prime rib glaze and is served with horseradish cream and a port reduction on the side. It’s beautiful on the plate and one of the more unique salmon preparations you will find.” Other popular dishes include their shrimp and grits made with gulf shrimp, speck and Louisiana style hot sauce and their glazed pork belly is made with persimmon, arugula, celery root and sherry maple vinaigrette. “Our shrimp and grits will stand up to any that you’ve had anywhere in the country, and our glazed pork belly combines some Asian fusion flavors with perfectly seared pork belly shingles that people rave about.” Their drink menu changes with the seasons and is regularly updated. Syrups and infusions used in their signature cocktails are made in-house, local and national craft beer selections are on rotation through their twelve taps and their extensive wine list includes 45+ options, so there’s always something new and fresh to pair with your appetizer or meal. “We have a nice mix of pub food like meatloaf, burgers, sandwiches and shepherd’s pie. We also have some unique dishes like Spanish octopus, roasted duck breast and much more. With our take on gastropub, you can get the best of both worlds. CONTINUED >

PIG & FINCH

(CON TI N U ED)

“We strive to create a fun, laid-back atmosphere that feels like your neighborhood pub. You’ll feel like family when you walk in the door and instantly realize this place is something pretty special. We have a ton of regulars and are truly like a little micro-community. Guests love the top-level service and love coming back time and time again. I think that is a result of a very unique but also approachable menu. If you want to come in and have some pub snacks or burgers with a few beers, you can get away spending less than $20 per person. Or, if you want to come in for a special occasion, you can have a 3 course meal with some of the best food in town and pair it with some really nice wines or cocktails. We execute a fine dining menu in a pub friendly environment.” From birthday parties, rehearsal dinners and family gatherings to corporate functions and meetings, Pig & Finch is the perfect place to host your next small gathering or big event. Their dining options include their semi-private room for up to 20 guests, their community table for up to 16, or buyout the entire restaurant to accommodate up to 150 guests. Chef Minnich and his team can even create a custom menu to complete your event. Don’t miss their happy hour, brunch on Sunday’s and outdoor patio during warmer months. October Financial Tip

Fall is here, pumpkin spice lattes, changing leaves, and holiday planning! But did you know you could fund your Roth IRA by simply deciding to make your own coffee in the morning instead of buying that Pumpkin Spice latte at a cafe or eating out at a restaurant? This simple and easy strategy can help yield surprising results!

The best time to develop a plan was 20 years ago, the second-best time is now.

They use the best products in the industry, and take education seriously. THE

ORIGIN STORY OF BOULEVARD BREWING CO. comes down to one seemingly crazy idea. Jeff Krum, president of Boulevard Brewing and friend of founder John McDonald, describes his involvement with the company as a “happy accident.” “My friend had a crazy idea back in the mid-1980s to start a brewery,” Krum says. “It seems

commonplace now, but at the time it really was sort of crazy. Most people he talked to told him as much, that there was only one other brewery in the state of Missouri at the time, and it happened to be the largest in the world.” And they’re still the second largest brewery in the state. But unlike 30 years ago, there are now over 100 breweries in Missouri. Krum says time was on their side. “We were fortunate in the timing when we started, even if it didn’t seem so in the early years, because it was still a pretty radical notion,” he says. “We had the benefit of timing. We had pretty strong tailwinds behind us for most of our early life.” Krum trusted his friend’s instincts, invested in the idea and Boulevard opened in 1989. A couple years in, it seemed McDonald’s idea had found traction—sales were strong, and their reputation was growing. Since Krum had business organization skills he says McDonald lacked, he offered to come in one day a week to help “bring some order to the chaos.” One day quickly became five plus days a week, and 25 years later Krum describes

erage that’s 6,000 years old, the beer business is remarkably volatile.”

With the ups and downs, closings and consolidations that came pre- and post-Prohibition, Krum notes that by the 1970s almost every brewery in the U.S. was making basically the same beer—a light, pilsner style lager. “[Beer is] a big tree with lots of branches and basically all that was being produced in the U.S. was one singular style,” he says. “But nobody knew any different at the time. The notion of making a beer like Boulevard Pale Ale (which was our first beer) or Boulevard Unfiltered Wheat (which became our most popular beer) were radical notions at the time. People had not seen or tasted anything like it for a while, not for decades and decades. Which means that most people that were alive had never experienced it. It was truly a revolutionary idea at the time.” Krum believes the company has a reputation for producing balanced beers. “We don’t seek extremes,” he says. “We spend a lot of time, energy and money on ensuring that every beer that we make is as good as it can be. When we first started, we invested in a lab and laboratory equipment and personnel and still do. I think most people will tell you that they may not love each and every one of our beers, but I think we’re known for not making any bad beers.”
