SUSTAINABLE DRESS FOR SUCCESS DENVER CLOTHES WOMEN WITH CONFIDENCE ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY HANNAH ECHOLS

“WE ESTABLISH COMMUNITY AND GIVE WOMEN THE TOOLS THEY NEED TO TAKE CARE O F T H E M S E L V E S . ” “WE INSPIRE CONFIDENCE, COURAGE, AND BELIEF IN WOMEN,” IS THE FIRST THING THAT CATCHES ONE’S EYE WHEN THEY WALK INTO THE BRIGHT PINK LOBBY OF DRESS FOR SUCCESS IN DENVER. Pre-assembled, personalized bags filled to the brim with professional clothes, shoes, under-garments and accessories line the walls, waiting for their new owners. Boxes of donations and metal racks of new clothes pour out of every office as a hopeful reminder that there is more than enough for each woman who comes into the nonprofit. Dress for Success (DFS), a global nonprofit with local affiliates in 150 cities within 25 countries, equips women with the clothes and confidence they need to acquire personal and professional success. They are a referral service, which means that other nonprofits in the business of helping people get jobs refer women to DFS. The usual intention for sending women to DFS is to find them something to wear for their interviews. However, Executive Director Amara Martin is adamant that clothes are just the beginning. “People know that we give away clothes, but that’s only the gateway,” Amara says. “We establish community and give women the tools they need to take care of themselves.” CONTINUED >

DFS has four signature programs: professional suiting, a career center with personal coaching, job readiness classes, and employee retention classes. While DFS doesn’t get people jobs, they take a lot of care to ensure women have all the knowledge they need to mix into a professional culture. Acquiring and keeping higher paying jobs are often a matter of survival in areas like Denver that have experienced large spikes in growth. “We have seen populations of women who used to be able to make a wage, go to work, and live in the city,” Amara says. “Now, it’s like impossible.” Gentrification is a major result of this growth. Merriam-Webster defines gentrification as “the repairing and rebuilding of property in a deteriorating area,

often accompanied by an influx of more affluent people. This usually results in the displacement of earlier, usually poorer, residents.” A new study from the National Community Reinvestment Coalition found that Denver is the second-most gentrified city in the United States. While this has the upside of nice properties and new businesses, Amara notes that it also results in pockets of poverty. “Our job is to find pockets of poverty and serve those

According to the Living Wage Calculation for Denver County, Colorado, a livable wage for a single parent with two children is $33.54. It was fitting to use the same name, and Victoria Marie Jewelers was born again in Parker. Fine jewelry can add elegance and sparkle to any outfit, but it is much more than a fashion statement. Gemstones often have sentimental value because they were received as gifts or handed down as family heirlooms. A beloved piece of jewelry is truly priceless to its owner, but improper care can be disastrous, so much so that the piece might not be able to be restored. Vintage jewelry has its own set of challenges. Filigree, with its openwork and intricate design, can be delicate, so there is a fine balance between restoring it and maintaining its original integrity. “All of the normal precautions prevail (as for other precious gemstones) when it comes to care,” Theresa says. “Vintage and estate jewelry should always be taken to a reputable independent jeweler to have it cleaned, maintained and appraised.” So what are the normal precautions that should be taken when caring for any fine jewelry? “Gemstones should never be exposed to harsh chemicals,” Theresa emphasizes. “Jewelry should be removed when you are cleaning and lotions and perfume should always be applied before you put on your jewelry.” Personally, I like to wear a favorite piece of jewelry most of the time, but it might have been wise to save Grandma’s opal ring for special occasions. Opals are a softer stone, so they can crack easily. They are also amorphous, which means they can absorb products that can alter them permanently. Emeralds can be worn daily, but care should still be exercised. Emeralds grow in a hydrothermal method and explosives are used to mine them. This intense process creates fractures. Ninety-nine percent of emeralds are treated by oiling (often with cedar oil) at the factory. The oil seeps into the fractures to give the stone a more even color. CONTINUED >

Sapphires are often heat treated to lighten the color and remove green (which can appear almost black) undertones. If lab reports show that an emerald hasn’t been oiled or a sapphire hasn’t been heat-treated, the stones increase in value and the price is profoundly impacted. Tanzanite is wildly popular. Because it is quite soft, coming in at a 6.7 on the Mohs hardness scale, it can scratch and abrade. Pearls, both fresh and saltwater, are an organic material, and are also porous. Like opals, they should never be sub-

As the hardest of gems, landing at 10 on the Mohs scale, diamonds are impervious to just about anything. Acid baths won’t phase them. AS SUMMER DRAWS TO A CLOSE, DREAMS OF COOLER AIR, FIRE-PITS, PUMPKINS, AND GOLDEN ASPEN TREES BEGIN TO ARISE. The change of seasons brings the hope of renewal, and as the leaves fall off the trees we are reminded that death is needed for new life to occur. Let’s face it— this has been a rough summer. With continual closures and quarantines and threats of disease, everyone is craving a change. Though it’d be foolish to think that a change in wardrobe could change everything, it can be a visual representation of an internal decision to do something new this fall. To create new

The Library, a restored cabin that was given as wedding gift from Dunton Hot Springs owner to his wife
This bounty of pages shouldn’t be here, in the middle-of-nowhere Colorado forest. But just like The Saloon a short walk away offering chef-driven mountain cuisine and crisp G&Ts for happy hour, I’m so glad that it does. We’re here for an extended weekend at Dunton Hot Springs, a boutique luxury mountain resort about 25 miles southwest of Telluride, which sits along the West Fork of the Dolores River. It’s a collection of around two dozen 1880’s miners cabins, once strewn throughout the valley but moved on-site and refurbished into high-end accommodations. There’s an open-air chapel, yoga studio and spa house for massages and other treatments. Some of the cabins feature hot-spring-fed soaking tubs. As a book lover, I’m giddy to spend some time in The Library (a wedding gift from the owner to his wife many years ago), but that’s not the main attraction here.

By taking care of your corneas, you can extend the health of your eyesight and reduce vision loss with age. An easy way to remember what to eat for healthy eyes is to look for orange foods. H E A LT H Y SKIN Did you know that vitamin A is also imperative for skin health? So while you’re caring for your corneas, you’re also boosting your outer glow. If you want to kick it up a notch, be intentional about eating plenty of foods with omega-3 fatty acids to reduce acne and inflammation and help your skin produce its own collagen. For your healthy fats, go for flax seed, walnuts, chia seeds, and fish.

For soft, flowing tresses, make sure you’re getting an equal amount of B vitamins in your diet. We naturally get plenty of B-6 because it’s in most grains, but it’s easier to end up with a biotin or B-12 deficiency if you don’t pay attention. Focus on foods like salmon, eggs, spinach, and broccoli for a healthy balance of B vitamins for your hair.
