where we have been and what we have done, and we try to remember to extend ourselves grace. January is a time to cleanse, to start fresh and not dwell on who we were 12 months ago. So much change can happen in a year, so as we plan our future and commit to resolutions, we also leave some room to change our minds—to grow and be human. Here at Memorial Lifestyle, we are so proud of the growth in our community through the last year and cannot wait to see what is coming for 2020. As new businesses open, old businesses expand, charities fundraise and we all turn one year older, we will continue to be right there to share your stories and celebrate your milestones. Happy New Year, Memorial! Thank you for being a part of our story.

JESSICA COLL ADO, A PICT URE OF STRENGTH AND DE TERMINATION Even after her three summers at the academy her coaches still told her she did not have the build to be a successful ballerina which gave way to her own doubts, but Collado was determined. She convinced her parents to trust her, passed on college, then on faith… moved to Houston… She joined what is now the Houston Ballet II a preprofessional program and
HER JOURNEY TO BECOME A PRINCIPAL BALLERINA
was promoted to Apprenticeship the next year. She has continued to climb the ranks over the past 16 years to her current role as Principal. Her road to success did not come without hard work and determination. Every time she heard “you can’t” it only made her work harder. Once she identified a weakness or when someone pigeonholed her for a specific role or type, she would find a way to overcome. Hard work, dedication and persistence has paid off as you can see by her successful ability to perform a variety of roles and her multiple recognitions and awards. Her advice to other dancers. Stick with it, as it can

Dancers at Houston Ballet work out six days a week when performing, 1 ½ hour ballet class plus six hours of rehearsal, wrapping up around 7 p.m. if they’re lucky. However, particularly challenging roles may require extra work to improve stamina or jumps which results in even more time in the gym or on the dance floor. How does she keep up with this pace and remain healthy? Collado realized as she got older her body needed a different kind of workout and an increased level of self-care to remain healthy. That’s when she started cross-training more and incorporating Pilates into her workouts. She also does physical therapy exercises along with free weights and TheraBands. Her goal is to round out her routine to complement her ballet work which keeps her body, and muscles, in balance thus preventing injury. For sore muscles she always ends her workouts with cool down stretches and takes lots of baths with salts and gets massages every two weeks. It must be working as Collado has been fortunate not to have had suffered a severe injury and we hope it stays that way. She also enjoys eating healthy and likes the way she feels when she does, but occasionally may have that slice of pizza or a cookie but doesn’t overdo it. Most all of us have dreamed of being a professional athlete, or at least looking like one. But few of us will ever have the grace and elegance as that of a dancer. But we can at least workout like one. Collado shares some of her favorite Pilates moves. She makes the advanced forms look easy, but don’t be daunted. Check in with your favorite instructor for variations at every level. 18

IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR AN AVERAGE GYM WITH AVERAGE TRAINERS, WOMEN’S ELITE BOXING CLUB IS CERTAINLY NOT THE PLACE FOR YOU. When you open the door, the energy engulfs you. The music is pumping and so is the atmosphere. You see a flurry of women in every shape, age and size engaged in multiple coordinated exercises (pushups, jabs & hooks, weight training…) with vigor and sheer determination because they’ve found hope and encouragement from their fearless leader, Nigel Stokes. Stokes is anything but average and so is her gym. In 2012, Stokes was a manager at a national home warranty company and weighed in at 378 pounds. She knew she needed to do something to get healthy and also knew it had to be something that would capture and hold her interest. She had always enjoyed fight sports and decided to try mixed martial arts (MMA), she discovered she was a natural, but MMA just couldn’t hold her interest. She tried others but didn’t find her passion until she went to the Savannah Boxing Club, Houston’s oldest boxing gym. She opened the door of the big, sweaty gym, took in a deep breath and marched into the owner’s office announcing she was ready to train. She went every day. What she didn’t realize was she was being watched. Three months into her journey she was approached by one of the young boxers. He asked Stokes to speak to his mom and provide some words of encouragement, as she was taken by Stokes results. Two weeks later the mom was training beside her. That’s when the first seed was planted.

IT IS VERY EASY TO GET OVERLOADED WITH ALL THAT IS HAPPENING IN THE WORLD TODAY. The hustle and bustle of the holiday season is behind us and a new year is here. As we look to 2020 and all that is before us, it’s good to have a plan to manage stress and find time to decompress, reflect on the past and contemplate our aspirations, and life. The best way to head off stress and ruminate is to have a place to go to just be, to find stillness and ponder all that is good and great in your world. It is beneficial to have a designated safe and comforting area in your home for this purpose. There is no one optimal solution, design or style as everyone is different. It is important to create space that works for you.

RENOVATE & REFINE
(CON TI N U ED)
Select space and surroundings that make you feel good, soothe, comfort, relax and inspire. Take a moment to consider how different colors, lighting and aromas impact your mood and feelings. Once you’ve selected a location in your home, set up your space. Create a comfortable place to sit. It doesn’t have to be on the floor in lotus style! Surround yourself with pillows, also a good way to add colors that make you feel good and help beautify the room. Use candles, incense or diffusers as smells help the mind relax. Soft music is relaxing for some. Play from another room if possible as this adds to the tranquil feeling. The drapes can be drawn or open, this is a personal preference. Fresh flowers or live plants adds color and life. Now you are ready to get started. Pick a time of day when you will not be rushed or disturbed. Remove distractions like electronics, to include cell phones, and clutter; but don’t forget to have paper and pencil handy to capture thoughts and inspiration. Sit comfortably and close your eyes or just open your senses to take in the sights, sounds, colors and aromas. Let yourself fall into your insights and feelings with openness of harmony and gratitude. Now enjoy life!
