WHAT’S YOUR GO-TO FOR LUNCH OR DINNER? I like many of the restaurants our historic downtown has to offer for lunch and dinner. From high-quality pub food to classy dinner fare that’s great for a night out.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE COMFORT OR JUNK FOOD? Cheeseburger! That’s it!

WHAT DISH DO YOU OR YOUR SPOUSE COOK THAT YOUR FAMILY LOVES!? Homemade egg noodles with Italian-spiced meatballs, tossed in olive oil and topped with fresh parmesan. Simple and delicious!

THOM SCHLOSSER

WHAT’S YOUR GO-TO FOR LUNCH OR DINNER? Lee’s Summit really does have quite a few good restaurants. Some of our favorites are in historic downtown Lee’s Summit and surrounding community.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE HOME-COOKED MEALS THAT YOU HAVE SHARED WITH YOUR FAMILY OVER THE YEARS? Nothing beats a good, traditional home-cooked meal. The two meals at the top of our list would be Becky’s famous meatloaf and Thom’s almost-famous barbeque chicken.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE COMFORT OR JUNK FOOD? Ahhhh, good ol’ comfort/junk food! Our favorite is ice cream. Becky goes for coffee ice cream and I love Rocky Road.

JOE HYDE

WHAT’S YOUR GO-TO FOR LUNCH OR DINNER AND CUISINE YOU LIKE BEST? We are very fortunate in Lee’s Summit to have great restaurant choices. We love to try new places and are always excited about authentic foods. As a family, our favorite cuisine is Mexican and our kids can‘t say no to chips and white cheese dip.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE HOME-COOKED MEALS THAT YOU HAVE SHARED WITH YOUR FAMILY OVER THE YEARS? My favorite home-cooked meal stems back to my childhood. My mom made shepherd’s pie at least every other week, and it’s one of my favorites. If I get to request dinner for my birthday, it’s always shepherd’s pie!

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE COMFORT OR JUNK FOOD? Fall is my favorite season of the year. Not that I can‘t enjoy my favorite junk food anytime of year, but there’s something great about eating hot wings with celery and blue cheese while watching football!

MANY OF LIFE’S CHERISHED MOMENTS WITH FRIENDS, FAMILY, AND COLLEAGUES ARE SHARED AROUND A TABLE ENJOYING FOOD OR DRINKS AND SPENDING TIME WITH ONE ANOTHER. For my busy family, the table is one spot where we gather every evening to talk about our day in-between the demands of our schedules. It is a time to connect. Food often holds very special memories, and just the aroma can evoke emotions or moments from times past. The smell of a warm cinnamon apple crisp takes me right back to my mom’s kitchen in the fall. Nutmeg reminds me of my husband’s grandmother who believed almost everything tasted better with a little bit of nutmeg sprinkled in. My most treasured food memory that conjures the strongest emotion isn’t fancy in the slightest, but holds countless memories of time spent at my granddad’s kitchen table— a freshly baked cake made from a boxed mix in a 9x13 pan with canned frosting. My grandpa was widowed at 56 and lived down the street from my childhood home, so we spent a lot of time at his house. We always knew that he would have a cake on his counter ready for us to enjoy. I walked down to my granddad’s house

ARTICLE ALLISON GIBESON | PHOTOGRAPHY KELLY ZUMSTEG RAMEY, KEVIN WALKER 14

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | October 2019

Kansas City native,

CHRIS PASZKIEWICZ, HAS ALWAYS ENJOYED ARTISTIC ENDEAVORS, WHETHER THAT BE IN PHOTOGRAPHY, DRAWING, SCULPTURE OR HIS PERSONAL FAVORITE— FOOD. It’s that love of art and expression that made him decide from a fairly young age that being a chef would be a good fit for him professionally. “I love cooking because I not only love the artist aspect, but I also love to create and experiment,” Paszkiewicz says. “I love to make people happy, and I feel my passion of cooking helps me achieve all of these things.” Born and raised in the south Kansas City area, Paszkiewicz got his start in the hotel restaurant business in Florida where he trained under Chef Randal White, serving as his personal assistant. It was there Paszkiewicz learned skills such as the basics of being a chef and how to serve mass caterings including Sunday brunches and holiday meals. In fact, Paszkiewicz says White was a big part of why he wanted to stay in the business. White says Paszkiewicz keeps an open mind on new ideas, focusing on clean plate presentation with flavor. He said he also has an inquisitive nature about food and continues to learn new techniques. White has seen him execute many large functions of high quality such as weddings of more than 300 guests and multiple large-scale, off-property events over the course of just a few days. “Chris has done very well in taking a leadership role by keeping the end in mind and thinking business-orientated,” White says. Paszkiewicz also worked at the Hilton President in Kansas City as kitchen supervisor under chef Chris Hall and was then executive chef at the 1886 Crescent Hotel in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Today he is the executive chef at the Ivory Grille Restaurant and Lounge in Sedalia, where he prepares various seafood and steaks and create his own new dish each week. To get inspiration for new dishes, he looks around, considers what’s fresh and seasonal as well as what he wants to eat. While he has many favorite dishes that he’s prepared, one that sticks out to him is Salmon Napoleon, which includes a puff pastry, salmon, sautéed spinach, garlic and shallots stacked and then topped with a Boursin cheese cream sauce. It’s a dish he prepared for a few job interviews, so it in turn has given him the chance to create more favorites. Through all his experiences, he has had the opportunity to cook for many prominent customers including Missouri Governor Mike CONTINUED >

Parson, Lieutenant Governor Mike Kehoe, Jerry Seinfeld, John Travolta and Anthony Bourdain among other celebrities, politicians and people of notoriety. Paszkiewicz says he enjoys plate presentation as well as putting his own spin on new and classic dishes. He said he likes to infuse different types of cuisine into his dishes with seafood being one of his favorites. In fact, his customers often say they enjoy the flavors in his foods as well as his plate presentation. “I definitely put my heart into it,” Paszkiewicz says. “I don’t half anything.” Paszkiewicz says being located in the Midwest has its advantages from a culinary perspective as it gives easier exposure to the influences from both coasts as well as from cities such as Chicago and New Orleans. “Being in the middle is a great culinary spot,” he says. To those considering a career in the culinary arts, Paszkiewicz says it’s important to keep looking ahead and keep your eyes on the big picture. “It can get very overwhelming and frustrating,” Paszkiewicz says. “Sometimes it might feel that you aren’t moving ahead when you are.”

16

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | October 2019

Ivory Grille Restaurant and Lounge All of Paszkiewicz’ training has been on-the-job. He says while one doesn’t necessarily need a degree to be successful as a chef, they do need to be willing to work extremely hard. Paszkiewicz says being a chef a very physically demanding job, often requiring 12 to 16 hours workdays five to six days a week. It’s always a balancing act as he and his wife, Lynn, have four sons, two of which have special needs. Most of his time off is spent caring for his sons and family, and he says he takes work-life balance day-by-day as he seeks to be present during his time with his family. Like many chefs, Paszkiewicz dreams of one day owning his own restaurant. He also hopes to become a Certified Executive Chef through the American Culinary Federation. “It’s a process I look forward to eventually,” he says. DID YOU KNOW?

I am a graduate of Lee's Summit

98% of my business comes from referral and repeat clients. I devote myself to serving the needs of my clients before, during and after each transaction. Because of the level of service I provide my clients, they in turn refer me to people of comparable quality to themselves, who may need the type of service I provide, and who would appreciate this same level of attention.

High School, and raised my family here. For over 18 years I have LOVED helping individuals and families make their dreams of home ownership come true. Lee's Summit has so much to offer with the cost of living, highly rated schools, but the history and the warm, welcoming people make it special. I can assist in both buying and selling transactions. RESPONSIBILITIES.

When you add athletic endeavors into the mix, there is even less time to prepare such meals and all the more need to fuel the body properly. The owners of Neighborhood Café have now developed Neighborhood Fit, a meal solution business that aims to solve this problem by delivering nutritious meals of your choice to various locations around Lee’s Summit. “It’s a convenient option for anyone who has a fitness goal or for people who don’t have the time to eat healthy while on the go,” says owner Tony Olson. In a few simple steps, you can also begin enjoying these well-balanced meals, and here’s how: CHOOSE MEALS BASED OFF PREFERENCES AND SPECIFIC NUTRITIONAL NEEDS. Go to Neighborhood.fit and select the meals you wish to purchase. The meals are grouped into three categories based on nutritional content—keto, performance, and recovery. Keto meals are low-carbohydrate or no-carbohydrate options designed to be consumed before workouts. Performance meals are medium-carbohydrate and high-protein meals, and recovery meals are higher carbohydrate foods designed to replenish after a workout. “Our philosophy is based on moderation,” Tony says. “When you eliminate something completely, it’s actually bad for you in the long run.”

The company offers a variety of options, with breakfast items including an egg white scramble and turkey bacon sandwich. Lunch and dinner options include cashew chicken with green veggies and a zucchini enchilada dish. There are protein balls for snacks and cold items such as a chicken pasta salad and a southwest shrimp bowl for those who might not have access to a microwave during the day. Olson says their most popular requests include their pulled pork sandwiches. The company automatically sends a calculation of all the nutritional content in your order when you purchase meals. For no additional cost, nutritionist Devin Byrd is happy to answer questions and discuss the science of the meals and how they might fit into your diet. If one has more in-depth nutritional and dietary planning questions, Devin can provide such insight and meal planning for a cost. ORDER MEALS AND CHOOSE PICK-UP LOCATION. Meal orders must be placed by midnight on Wednesdays for pick-up the following week. Pick-up days are Mondays and Thursdays at various locations around the city including Neighborhood Café, Blush Bootcamp, Genesis on Oldham Parkway and Shredd KC LS. Olson says the purpose of having two different pick-up days during the week is to ensure maximum freshness, although customers can choose just one pick-up day a week if they so desire. All the meals are prepared at the Neighborhood Café kitchen in Waldo and are then distributed out to the pick-up locations. PICK UP THE MEALS AT THE LOCATION. Finally, you will receive an email when the meals have been placed in the refrigerator at your designated pick-up location, and then it’s time to pick them up, microwave and enjoy. “We wanted to create something that is almost a partner with you,” Olson says. In the future, Olson says they hope to increase the number of pick-up locations they have and rotate menu options more frequently. They are also beginning a subscription service that will automatically order a customer’s requested meals for them each week. For more information visit: https://neighborhood.fit/

WHAT’S COOKING?

(CON TI N U ED)

AMY KEITH Amy Keith is the owner of FLAVOR, a new Spice Shop and Specialty Food Market opening soon in Downtown Lee’s Summit. FLAVOR is your one-stop-shop for all things that bring FLAVOR to what you eat! This unique shop will offer a wide array of spices, both international and domestic; whole and ground; dried and fresh, as well as small batch sauces, marinades, salsas, from local food crafters. They will also have a selection of dried mushrooms and chilis, oils & vinegars, specialty barbecue items and many more FLAVOR-packed surprises! They will also have local cheeses. Their social media for people to watch and follow is @flavorkc1 on Instagram and Facebook. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE COMFORT FOOD OR FAVORITE MEAL? WHY? RECIPE? It is definitely a challenge for a person who lives and breathes food to name one specific favorite food or meal. Food for me is much like music, different meals and tastes, just like different songs and notes, make me flush with unique memories and feelings. I could tell you about how my father walking though door with barbecue wrapped in brown paper from Arthur Bryant’s, or how when I woke up to the smell of fresh bacon at my grandma’s farmhouse, or how the Italian Sausage and Artichoke Soup (see recipe) my mom made for the holidays would make my food soul sing. However, the first time I went to the Annual Ethnic Enrichment Festival in Kansas City in the ‘90s, where we ate multiple dishes from all over the world, was when I knew my food journey had changed forever. Dishes, spices and flavors I could never conceive of. As a tradition, my two boys and I have continued to have that eating experience every year for the last 20 years!

FRESH SEAFOOD TO LANDLOCKED LEE’S SUMMIT. “It is so unusual to find quality fresh seafood in the Midwest and we wanted to bring fresh, quality seafood at an affordable

price to Lee’s Summit,” Lock says. “We learned a lot about the seafood business over the past decade and felt it could translate well to our new concept.” Lock and Molloy both worked at McCormick and Schmick’s Seafood for a decade before opening their first restaurant in 2012, Summit Grill (also in Lee’s Summit). After opening five more restaurants in the following five years, Pearl Tavern was a natural next step. “After opening a handful of restaurants, we determined there was a need for a casual, approachable seafood restaurant in Lee’s Summit,” Lock says. “It made a lot of sense to open Pearl Tavern. We made sure to offer other menu items aside from seafood to appeal to all.” The menu offers variety from beginning to end with starters like calamari and char-grilled oysters to entrees like lobster mac n’ cheese and king crab legs. Their fish is sourced from both coasts, the gulf and the Great Lakes. It’s delivered fresh daily from a company in Chicago. “We have a very diverse menu from not only an offering standpoint but from a price point as well,” Lock explains. “You can come in and have $1 oysters during lunch and happy hour or live lobster for a dinner celebration.” If not a seafood lover—no problem. Lock notes fish-free choices such as the Tavern cheeseburger, andouille sausage sandwich, Romano chicken pasta as well as a selection of homemade pies for dessert by pastry chef Nikki. What makes the cut on the menu starts with a simple question: would they love to eat it? “Many factors come into play as we make decisions on what to place on the menu, but first and most importantly we ask ourselves, ‘Would we love to eat it?!’” Lock says. TENURED AGENT IS STAPLE OF COMMUNITY TONI TYGART OF RE/MAX ELITE 40

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | October 2019

AFTER MORE THAN 5,000 REAL ESTATE TRANSACTIONS AND NEARLY 35 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE, TONI TYGART HAS BUILT A NAME THAT PEOPLE REMEMBER. As a broker associate at RE/MAX Elite, Tygart has been selling Lee’s Summit, the Lake Communities, and beyond with legendary results. “Loving what I do” is the formula Tygart credits for making her one of the top agents in eastern Jackson County: “I love helping people. I love the challenge, and I don’t ever quit.” That persistence was on display just last week when Tygart was able to help a friend of hers—a seasoned realtor with 20 years’ experience—sell a home sitting on the market for seven years. Proof that Tygart has the skills to go the distance. “I have no desire to retire,” Tygart says. “I loves sales, and I still want to sell houses and work with people. The only difference is I have learned how to balance my life. Today, I attract clients who are especially drawn to a professional who’s been in the industry awhile and knows how to take care of them.” Tygart says 80 percent of her business is past clients or referrals, including second-generation families. The other 20 percent is due to her reputation built upon name recognition. Tygart says she enjoys working with first-time buyers who trust her opinion to steer them in the right direction and to fully decode the contract, which some people don’t even read because it can now run 60 pages or more. “I take care of people which is why I have so much referral business,” Tygart says. “The commission check is not more important than doing what’s right. I believe in being professional and ethical.” The first year that RE/MAX created its highest and most prestigious award, the RE/MAX Circle of Legends, Tygart met the stringent conditions to qualify—a feat that has taken other agents decades to accomplish, if at all. (She was one of only 11 agents out of 123,000 worldwide to earn this distinction.) Tygart has earned numerous distinctions over the years (see list) and has designations in Accredited Buyer Representative (ABR), Certified Residential Specialist (CRS), Graduate of the Realtor® (GRI), Short Sale & Foreclosure Resource Specialist (SFR), and Certified Distressed Property Expert (CDPE). Tygart began her real estate career in the ‘80s. As a Lakewood resident with experience in interior decorating, Tygart thought selling neighborhood houses would be a fun, part-time job which has grown into a full-time position. Her passion for matching clients with their dream homes was an instant connection, winning her Rookieof-the-Year in her first year of real estate. She credits her late husband, Rodger, for much of her success. “Rodger was the driving force behind my phenomenal sales career,” Tygart says. “He dreamed that one day I would be recognized as one of the Top 10 RE/MAX agents worldwide. I fulfilled his prophecy the year before he died.” Although Tygart’s business territory has widened, her heart remains in Lakewood. She has built her third personal home there where she resides with her 4-year-old, 95-pound goldendoodle, Cooper. “Everybody knows Cooper,” Tygart says. CONTINUED >

Start of school can lead to disputes August is the start of the school year for most children. For many kids, where they are going to school is a forgone conclusion. It might be that they are simply returning to the school that they attended in the past. However, for many other children, the school they are going to attend can be a source of disputes between family law litigants. When parties are divorcing, one spouse can live in one school district, while the other has moved to another. In other cases, one parent might want the children to go to private school where the other parent desires a public school. In some situations, one parent may even want to home-school the children, while the other parent is against that idea. Since schools typically start sometime in August, August can be a month where lots of family law litigation can take place. They can take place in a divorce mat-

ter. Where the parents are not married, it can can culminate in paternity litigation. Where the parents are already divorced, motions to modify or motions for contempt can ensue. Many litigants hope to get a resolution from the court before the start of school. In other circumstances, a party might even attempt to file a temporary restraining order to prevent the children from being enrolled in a new school. In many of these cases, a guardian ad litem ends up being appointed. A guardian ad litem is an attorney for the children who typically provides recommendations to the court as to custody related issues, including what school the children will attend. Family court judges are to look at the best interests of the children in resolving these disputes. Thus, family courts can look at variables like the rankings and services that the schools offer. If the kids have spe-

cial needs, they often look at the ability of the school to meet these needs. If private school is being debated, the cost of who is going to pay for that can be a big issue. Regardless, make no mistake that August is often a boom month for new family law litigation. The start of school can be the source of disputes between divorced or separated parents. Stange Law Firm, PC limits their practice to family law matters including divorce, child custody, child support, paternity, guardianship, adoption, mediation, collaborative law and other domestic relation matters. Stange Law Firm, PC gives clients 24/7 access to their case through a secured online case tracker found on the website. They also give their clients their cell phone numbers.
