I want to take this opportunity to express our deepest sympathy for anyone who has been impacted by the coronavirus. On some level, we are all in that category, but some much more than others. The stories in this issue were photographed, written, and laid out, well before any of us knew how quickly things would change. We will be devoting the entire May issue to the amazing community organizations and small businesses who are serving those most affected by COVID-19. As we have already witnessed, our community remains strong, and we will persevere. In good health,

WE ARE WHAT WE SOW HOW THE BOULDER COUNTY FARMERS MARKETS HAVE NOURISHED THE LOCAL COMMUNITY FOR OVER 30 YEARS

ARTICLE LISA VAN HORNE PHOTOGRAPHY ASHTON RAY HANSEN

HEATHER BURTNESS FONDLY REMEMBERS THE EARLY DAYS OF HER RELATIONSHIP WITH THE BOULDER COUNTY FARMERS MARKETS. “I was raised in Palisade but really grew up alongside the Boulder community,” says Burtness. “As a young adult, my summers were spent transporting fruit over the beautiful mountain passes to join my sister to sell it in town and to engage in meaningful connections with all of Boulder. The farmers market was growing up around the same time, and it essentially became my sacred space.”

The daughter of Dave and Mary Morton, founders of family-owned Morton’s Organic Orchards, Burtness has seen firsthand the intrinsic connection forged between the community and the market since its inception. It’s a revered relationship built on mutual trust, support, education, and sustainability—and it’s become foundational to Boulder’s identity. The market had humble beginnings on the courthouse lawn with only a few farmers. In 1987, it began a new life on 13th Street, when seven farmers set up shop next to the sidewalk between Canyon and Arapahoe. Their intent? To sell the goods they grew—and only the goods they themselves grew—directly to the community. This guiding principle that has driven the integrity of the market for the past three decades; of those original seven farmers, you can still find a handful of them amongst the over 70 vendors at the market of today. Even with this growth, including the expansion into additional regional cities, the market’s core mission has likewise remained steadfast: to support, promote, and expand local agriculture, to make fresh products accessible to the community, and to strengthen the relationships between local food producers and consumers. “We wouldn’t exist without our farmers, and we strive to give them as much support as we can,” says Brian Coppom, executive director with Boulder County Farmers Markets. “Our community members are equally important. We need both to have a happy, healthy market, and the resulting dynamic is one that builds on itself. We’re happy as organizers when everybody is enjoying themselves, interacting with agriculture, and feeling the energy of the community.” The market’s impact on Boulder has long transcended its weekly seasonal hours of operation. Both the market and the participating farmers lead by example when it comes to promoting environmental consciousness. The majority of participants have taken steps to improve their environmental impact, including eliminating the use of toxic chemicals, boosting biodiversity and pollinator health, and applying practices that promote healthier soil. Morton’s was one such early champion of a future without toxic chemicals and practices, and they transitioned to become Certified Organic in 1996. According to Burtness, this is a vital part of the care, respect, and intention with which they treat the growing of their peaches, apricots, and other stone fruits. The market itself emphasizes sustainable practices too. Running a zero-waste operation, the organization works with local leaders such as Eco-Cycle to reduce waste—achieving a 94% diversion rate in 2019. The market subsidized compostable bags in 2019 to help vendors make the switch away from non-compostable plastic and in 2020 is striving to further its zerowaste efforts and is piloting a reusable plate program. The market also works to improve the community’s relationship with food. The organization partners with Boulder County Public Health to secure funding for food access programs and support its Farm to Early Care and Education program. It hosts an annual CSA fair for area farmers to showcase their programs, and it partners with local hunger relief and food waste organizations, such as Boulder Food Rescue and Growing Gardens. This all adds up to a relationship between the market and the community that is both vitally important and thoroughly enjoyable. “Hands down, my favorite thing about the market is the people,” says Coppom. “I love the common bond of food and farming that we share. It makes the market a wonderful place to swim in a stream of conviviality and calm.” The 2020 Boulder Farmers Market season is 34 weeks long and will run on Saturdays from April 4th to November 21st and on Wednesdays from May 6th through October 7th.

THE NATURAL PATH: HOW ECOSCAPE COMBINED FUNCTION AND FLOW IN A LOUISVILLE LANDSCAPING PROJECT

FOR BOULDER’S ECOSCAPE ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN, GREAT LANDSCAPING IS ALMOST AS MUCH ABOUT THE NATURAL BENEFITS OF WHAT’S BENEATH THE SURFACE AS THE AESTHETICALLY STUNNING ENVIRONMENTS ABOVE IT. Bringing an ecological consciousness to landscape design, construction, and maintenance in the Boulder area since 2000, Ecoscape works to apply flow—their own artful practice based on the science of hydrology—to each of their unique designs. Combining this concept of flow with the scientific discipline of hydrology—the study of the planet’s waters and their occurrence, distribution, circulation, and interaction with living things—means that Ecoscape’s work is deeply rooted in a functional symbiosis between natural water pathways and design. This relationship is starkly apparent in one of the firm’s recent projects, in which a Louisville family was seeking to create a comprehensive landscape design for their property that was both sustainable and offered incomparable curb appeal. Each element of the project was designed to maximize the natural water pathways of the existing landscape aesthetically and functionally while addressing the three key goals for the project: beauty, hydrology, and reduction. The welcoming entry area is made up of modern, clean lines. The team also took the opportunity to grade the existing front yard to introduce more outdoor living space and purposefully redirect the surface run-off.

Gabion baskets create a leveled terrace and grand entryway—a unique look that combines cobble rocks with wrapped raw steel—and also provide a functional purpose in holding back soil and absorbing surface run-off. This run-off, along with subsurface water and roof run-off collected via the French drain and directed through a dry creek, is led towards a rain garden at the front of the house.

THE NATURAL PATH (CONTINUED)

“When designing our landscapes we need to find the flow of the space, the natural flow of the living spirit, and energy of the land,” says Cheval Oldaker, BLA, landscape designer with Ecoscape. “Water flows can create wonderful design opportunities and, once we understand these natural paths, we can connect with how best to design these spaces.” “My favorite element of this design is the com-

rain garden is very playful.” The absorbent properties that these features and this layout provide are also ecologically significant—especially in Colorado’s high desert climate. A large part of hydrology includes the study of the chemical and physical properties of water. As Oldaker notes, landscape designs that allow for the natural remediation of storm water run-off contaminants also mean that properties can effectively play the role of watersheds and capitalize on passively collected water—contributing to both a thriving landscape and a larger thriving ecosystem. “In Colorado, run-off is often a lost opportunity,” says Oldaker. “Having swales, berms, and boulders in your landscape can turn it into a multidimensional sponge that not only allows for water retention and extra nutrients in your soil but also naturally filters run-off before it hits larger bodies of water.”

The result? A landscape design that artfully harmonizes existing water pathways and climate conditions with sensible ecological design.

LOCAL’S CHOICE (CONTINUED)

BLUE YOGA MATS HAVE BEEN NEATLY ORGANIZED ALONG EACH WALL OF THE STUDIO ROOM WITH BOLSTERS AND STRAPS NEARBY. The center of the room is empty and each student already knows to line up in unison with legs up the wall, laying flat on their back. This Avita Yoga® class at the Yoga Loft in South Boulder is almost full and is unlike any yoga class I've attended before. I follow what I believe is “the way” and find questions already starting to percolate about this new practice. Our teacher, Jeff Bailey, walks into the room and has the class place a bolster under our pelvis, legs still up the wall. As a newbie to this style of yoga, I have no idea what to expect, but here we are, doing seemingly nothing but relaxing on our backs. I notice my mind start to trust the relaxation, as he instructs us to turn our head to the side. I feel the compression of my shoulders while he shares helpful words about the purpose of this sensation in my upper back. In my meditative state, I forget the words, but the message somehow translates to my physical experience. He’s attentive, attuned to each body in the room, and is proactively facilitating adjustments for each person in the class as they transpire. In the slowness, the subtleties start to augment themselves to be seen and felt. I am aware of the tightness in my neck and the resulting impact on my breath, as the invitation to work with rather than against my tension is spoken. According to Bailey, my body is reorganizing itself with each shape; reorganizing and releasing the patterns I’ve created throughout my life—previous movement practices, various injuries, traumas, muscle training, and the on-going pressure to keep doing. For better or worse, my body has created patterns to adapt to the demands of life and society—a behavior that encourages bodies to strategically hide the problem to keep the momentum going. Avita Yoga® gently reveals the problems in order to restore good health. After attending his first yoga class at the young age of twenty-two, Bailey asked his teacher what yoga meant. His teacher responded that it means ‘to join,’ which left Bailey perplexed. 78

Boulder Lifestyle | April 2020

“If it means ‘to join’ then why do we spend all this time pulling ourselves apart?” This question would lead him to the creation of Avita Yoga® many years down the road. Avita Yoga® is all about slowing down the pace to cultivate more presence for peace, health, and wellbeing. “It's the resolution of conflict on all levels— physical, mental, and emotional,” Bailey says. Each shape and sequence is intentionally designed to take care of the bones and joints through specific pressures and compressions on which they thrive. It's the secret sauce to activating cells in your body that serve to take away things that are no longer needed and to stimulate the creation of new tissues. The number one cause of pain is due to the lack of circulation, and one of the greatest benefits of this practice is the long-term increase in circulation. With less pain, your body can begin to increase its range of motion. Avita Yoga® is a moving meditation meant to bring bodily freedom, comfort, and ease. To practice Avita Yoga® is to choose wellness. Many movement practices push us to sweat and exhaust ourselves and many of us have equated exhaustion with relaxation. If you’ve ever attended a yoga class you’ve likely put your body into poses that are much more complex than you’ve given yourself credit for. The body never forgets, especially when it comes to injury. Whether physical, mental, or emotional, it's important we give space and time to the yoga shapes and sensations so lasting, healing results can occur. As I slowly press myself up to a seated position, my nervous system feels noticeably different. I can breathe deeper and I feel this sense of connectedness to my whole being. In the search to understand the perplexity Bailey once felt about the meaning of yoga, I believe I am feeling what he means to truly practice yoga: to join with the places in myself that I’ve wanted to abandon or give up on because they’ve been too painful, too frustrating, or confusing, and come into a deeper sense of wholeness. It’s nice to know that no matter how challenging or painful, there is a helpful way. It’s never too late to heal and join. April 2020 | Boulder Lifestyle

IT 'S A BLUEBIRD DAY FOLK MUSIC LIVING LEGENDS SWOOP THROUGH BOULDER FOR 3RD ANNUAL BLUEBIRD MUSIC FESTIVAL

ARTICLE BEN WIESE | PHOTOGRAPHY TY HYTEN AND MOLLY MCCORMICK

FOR TRAVIS ALBRIGHT, MUSIC IS A KEY THAT UNLOCKS THE POTENTIAL OF A COMMUNITY. His understanding of such a concept is on full display in his work: each summer, Albright puts on a slew of music education-based summer camps for Boulder students with his nonprofit organization, Future Arts Foundation, and he kicks the season off with a celebration of the art form itself in the form of the Bluebird Music Festival. GIVING BACK (CONTINUED)

Albright’s work is the best of both worlds: an entrepreneurial spirit, accompanied by grand ideas and vision, and the day-to-day involvement and work ethic of a person with true conviction about his purpose. Since beginning the festival in 2014, after numerous performers, audience members, students, and employees have participated in his work, Albright is unwavering in his belief that there’s still more potential to unlock for the present and future generations of Boulder. WHAT WOULD YOU WANT FIRST-TIMERS TO KNOW ABOUT THE BLUEBIRD FESTIVAL? TRAVIS ALBRIGHT: First-timers should be aware of the unique setup for the day. There are two, separately ticketed events that day. In the afternoon during Strings & Stories, Wesley Schultz of The Lumineers, Colin Meloy of The Decemberists, Jade Bird, Josh Ritter, and Adia Victoria will each play a few songs from their catalogs and also tell stories of how those songs came to light. The evening will include full solo sets from Colin Meloy and Josh Ritter, while Jade Bird and Dave Simonett (of Trampled by Turtles) will play full sets with their bands. There is also a kickoff concert on April 16th at eTown Hall. Dave Simonett will play a full Strings & Stories show that evening to kick off the weekend. HOW HAS YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE IMPORTANCE OF THE BLUEBIRD FESTIVAL CHANGED OVER TIME? Well, the event is now important for a variety of reasons. First off, proceeds from the event supply local schools with musical instruments they cannot afford and pays for art classes for the children of local teachers and first responders. Secondly, it has become an economy boost for the city of Boulder. The city estimated that the one-day event brought in around one million dollars to Boulder’s economy last year. HOW HAS RUNNING THE BLUEBIRD FESTIVAL SHAPED YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF PEOPLE AND MUSIC? The success of this event has shown me that there is a thirst for “listening events” in a beautiful setting. I love a fun, dancing concert as much as the next person (I attended nearly 100 Phish concerts in my younger days), but there’s something special about a festival that takes place in a beautiful, seated auditorium. It’s very rare and special in that aspect. The unique Strings & Stories component just adds another beautiful layer to that.

GIVING BACK (CONTINUED)

102 Boulder Lifestyle | April 2020

HOW HAS YOUR ROLE IN ORGANIZING THE FESTIVAL EVOLVED OVER TIME? Not at all. I still book all the musicians, do the marketing, meet with local businesses to acquire the sponsors, and put together staff/logistics. I feel like if an event founder stays well connected with all these aspects, it keeps a festival grounded in its roots and identity. Authenticity can be difficult to find in large music events these days with corporations running most large concerts and festivals. I like that Bluebird feels like a family event from the musicians, to the staff, to the attendees. That’s important to me. IF YOU COULD MAKE ONE IMPROVEMENT TO THE FESTIVAL AND DIDN’T HAVE THE BUDGETARY/LOGISTICAL HURDLES YOU HAVE, WHAT WOULD IT BE? I would eventually like to grow it into a full weekend event, whether that means more days at Macky Auditorium or adding venues. We feature many national and international musicians, but there are so many great local musicians around here. Over 60% of our attendees come from out of the state or country. I’d like to draw them in with the national acts, and turn them onto our local acts while they’re here. I’d also like to tie other fun aspects of the city into the event. We live in such a beautiful place, folks should experience all of Boulder while they’re here, not just the music. WHY DO YOU KEEP DOING THIS? WHAT DO YOU GET OUT OF IT BEYOND KNOWING YOU’RE PUTTING ON A SUCCESSFUL SHOW THAT PEOPLE ENJOY? I LOVE it. Curating an event that so many people have come to love is my passion. Then, when I see proceeds benefitting the kiddos of our community, I feel so proud that it’s become such a well-rounded community event. WHAT’S THE NEXT STEP FOR THE FESTIVAL AND WHAT DOES TAKING THE NEXT STEP LOOK LIKE ON A DAY-TO-DAY BASIS? I think the next step will be adding more days, venues, and musicians to the event without getting out of control. I want it to keep its identity, but also want to show off more of Boulder and Colorado musicians. To be continued...
