All at once, homes are physical spaces, concepts, cities, feelings, qualities, property, and people. All over the city, the concept of ‘home’ is on display: gorgeous, towering houses with impeccable views; residents walking, running, and riding mountain trails; local businesses making meaningful relationships with customers; college students gathering for a meal; and so on. Boulder, home to many, is malleable enough to not only meet many different require-

ments to be considered ‘home’ but also exceptional enough to continuously be a destination folks from all over the world actively seek out. Being afforded the opportunity to call Boulder ‘home’ in any capacity is an incredible stroke of good fortune. It is unquestionably worth devoting a magazine issue to. But part of measuring the true value of a home requires a bit of discomfort on everyone’s part, including, maybe even especially, us here at the magazine.

Boulder is to also acknowledge how undeniably fortunate, for both reasons in and out of any one person’s control, so many of us are to have roofs, doors, walls, electricity, or any aspect of a ‘home’ at all. If this issue resonates in any way, I hope it is due to the hard work from our writers and photographers and because we can all have a better understanding of the value of the home. Enjoy the March issue.

As a second-generation residential real estate broker, I recognize that decisions to buy or sell are often distilled down to the nuances of a community and its impact on the real estate market. As the Front Range grows, those factors become all the more important. Now as a broker with Compass, a technologydriven real estate company, I have even more revolutionary tools and services within reach. I bring all of this to my clients and in a dynamic market such as ours, it is more important than ever.

DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS On Thursday, January 16th, the Drive-By Truckers played a live show at the Fox Theatre. Drive-By Truckers have always been outspoken, telling a distinctly American story via craft, character, and concept, all backed by sonic ambition and social conscience. Founded in 1996 by singer/ songwriter/guitarists Mike Cooley and Patterson Hood, the band has long held a progressive fire in their belly but with AMERICAN BAND, they have made the most explicitly political album in their extraordinary canon. Through the use of unique materials, colors and mirrors to add light and perceived space to each room, the team both maximized the home’s space and elevated each room to peak modern design. obsessive micro-farm-to-table sourcing ethos, but its affordability and quick, comfortable atmosphere attract a broader range of eaters. There are now 11 Next Doors around the country — seven are in Colorado — so the team decided it was time for a refresh to make it appeal to even more people. This involves not just a makeover for the Boulder restaurant and new catering offerings for events and meetings, but also the most significant menu change since it opened. After all, the way we eat is evolving (Keto! Paleo! Vegan! Glutenfree!), and so is technology. Food delivery apps have changed the game, and Next Door, which has its own app, has seen a large increase in to-go and takeaway orders. “It’s moving so fast,” Degnan says of technology and

“We’re building the menu based on how people eat,” Degnan says. “In Colorado people are active, we’re outside, we care about what we put in our bodies. It’s food you can trust. We have really clean food — and we try not to be preachy about it.” Potential new menu items include a bun-less keto burger with two patties, a fried egg, cheddar, bacon and avocado; a paleo bowl of chicken, avocado and cauliflower rice; sheet tray nachos (so every chip gets the perfect amount of toppings); crispy cauliflower with dipping sauces; Baja shrimp tacos; and a Mediterranean burger made with a 50/50 cremini mushroom and beef blend and topped with olive tapenade, roasted red peppers, and feta. Something for everyone, all served in a casual, comfortable environment. It does sound like an Applebee’s, except this gathering place’s commitment to whole, unprocessed foods, inclusive eating and earth-friendliness goes beyond the typical chains. This new version of Next Door fits into everyone’s lives.

HOME SWEET HOME REIMAGINING HOME FASHION WITH CEDAR & HYDE
NESTLED WITHIN THE SHOPS ON PEARL STREET IS A COLLECTION OF COZY SWEATERS AND HYGGE-STYLE TEXTILES THAT WOULD MAKE ANY HOME AND CLOSET FEEL LIKE A PINTEREST BOARD COME TO LIFE. Neutral colors and eclectic storefront displays quickly welcome customers into a lifestyle that encourages diversity and expression. I'm writing, of course, about Cedar and Hyde. Cedar & Hyde is a labor of love between the two sisters, and an idea they tossed around for years before making their dream a reality. “We work with brands and designers we personally know and believe in," says co-owner and founder, Poss Lambert who started this mercantile store with her sister, Christie Lambert. "We feel strongly that if the person making our products does it out of passion, hard work, and love, then the customer will feel all of those things and feel good about their purchases." “Our lives were going in different directions for many years until they weren’t,” says Poss Lambert. "We spent six months dreaming up every doomsday scenario as to why it was a terrible idea until we realized it simply wasn’t. We just had to make it work, so we did!”

Poss and Christie Lambert started their store strictly on determination, previous retail experience, and a risky financial move. Coming from a lower-middle-class family, a strong work ethic was instilled in them both from a young age. “We created a world we could not have lived in unless we built it ourselves," says Poss Lambert. “And while sometimes it can feel like a glasshouse, we have gratitude every year to see it gain strength and feel a little more established.” Cedar & Hyde’s niche is not only in fashion, but fashion for the home as well. From kitchen to bath, the store satisfies the craving for ceramic pots for houseplants and woven area rugs to dress up hardwood floors. “I actually just remodeled the main living area of my home this past summer, and the style is very Southwest meets old New York. We used American Clay on the walls and ceiling to not only give warmth to the space but also to make it feel established,” says Poss Lambert. Poss used all living materials in her home — including soapstone, cement, and oak in the kitchen, which will age well with passing time. “The lighting and dishes are all handmade pottery from people I admire, and thanks to my husband, there is a never-ending supply of plants to keep it fresh,” says Poss Lambert. Poss advises to let fashion be an extension of yourself and carry that into your home. She struggles with trends and encourages anyone looking for a decor style to think about the colors, space, and designs that bring each individual person to life. “There is no right or wrong answer,” says Poss Lambert. “It’s about feeling comforted and at ease in your own little world.” Cedar & Hyde is looking forward to more brand collaborations in the future to help put their makers in front of their customers and let their stories be told.

to fashion their new home like an old beach house, vintage fridge included. Despite their best efforts to find the perfect product, they only found boring iceboxes. A man of eclectic taste, Creamer was known to cringe at conformity. Not one to dress retro, but always ready to try things outside of the box. He was just the man for the job. Creamer had always loved retro aesthetics and had spent his years as a broke college student collecting old refrigerator doors to decorate the walls of his home. He admired the design of that era and saw these doors as his artistic expression. Dreaming of the days when artistic thought was apparent in appliances, he longed for statement pieces and was perplexed by the countless lackluster kitchen appliance designs he’d seen populate the market over the last few decades. Unimpressed with the white, insulated boxes, it was time to put

LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT CAPTURING THE MOMENT ARTIST MICHELLE COURIER KNEW DENVER WAS HER NEW HOME ARTICLE AMELIA BROUGHTON | PHOTOGRAPHY POPPY + CO.
FROM THE MOMENT ARTIST AND WESTWARD GALLERY OWNER MICHELLE COURIER PEERED THROUGH THE WINDOW OF HER FUTURE ART GALLERY ON DENVER’S BELOVED TENNYSON STREET, SHE KNEW IT WAS MEANT TO BE. The previous owners of the former frame shop had seemingly written it on the wall for her.

“Whoever has this magical space next, I wish you great wine, great energy, and great art.” The space was prepped and ready with everything necessary for a gallery, including an art studio that allowed for the continued unfolding of Courier's magnificent talent. In the summer of 2016, Courier visited her daughter and discovered the gallery. At the time, she’d been living in Lake Tahoe, had her work featured in twenty galleries across the country, and was well-known for her captivating acrylic paintings of tree-scapes and water scenes. Overcome with an unexplainable feeling of joy, she was certain that she was going to live in Denver; by October, Courier was a resident of the Mile High City.

Westward’s namesake is a nod to Courier’s years spent exploring the West, with an inspired nudge from her daughter. She intimately knows the highways, having spent ten weeks out of every summer traveling and instantly knew “Westward” would capture the essence of her gallery. A painter who purposely tries not to do anything typical, Courier remembers being a rebellious spirit from a young age in school. “I would think of every single way that I could make it not what everyone else was doing,” she shares. Courier starts by taking a hundred or so photos of any given area, closing in on details, and savoring each moment of the environment.

“When I’m at a scene, I take notes and I write down what day it is, the year, the time, what it sounds like, what the air feels like, is there wind, is it warm?” She immerses herself into the painting before any paint has even been squeezed out of the tube. Halfway through the process, she lets go of the photos and embodies the feeling — it’s not what she sees, but what she feels. She wants viewers to experience the feelings she has and admire the light she’s captured, not necessarily know the origins of the painting. Beyond her fierce dedication to painting and running the gallery, Courier shines as a glowing example of a woman boldly traversing the unknown to do what sets her heart on fire. It would seem as though Courier and Colorado coalesced to ignite more possibility for her future. Her work has recently been featured on wine bottles and her famous water scene blue and green hues have found their way into signature Charvin acrylic set with Jerry’s Artarama. Denver continues to inspire Courier with easy access to breathtaking scenery, endless musical talent, and hidden gems that she seems to have a knack for finding. And while a paintbrush will likely find her wherever she goes, Courier knows Denver is the home for all her hopes and dreams to continue coming true.
