sis, I know firsthand how important it is to stay on top of our health. Scheduling an annual mammogram, for example, is key to detecting any signs of breast cancer in the earliest stages. Thankfully, my own breast cancer was detected early, and after a brief treatment, I was declared cancer-free. Navigating the journey through breast cancer is incredibly easier with a team of committed supporters—like Linda Brafford, owner of A Private Affair in Thousand Oaks. Since 1991, the compassionate staff at A Private Affair have been helping women find the perfect bra. With an emphasis on hard-to-fit sizes (A-N), A Private Affair offers women, even those who have undergone breast cancer mastectomies, a custom consultation and bra fitting. “We have something for everyone,” says Linda, and if we don’t have the perfect fit, we’ll get it for you, she told me. In the dressing room, she patiently and efficiently took my measurements and brought me different styles to try. Her warm demeanor and professional expertise helped make an often uncomfortable experience actually

GIVING BACK
(CON TI N U ED)
DEDICATED DOCTOR Dr. Love’s reputation as an activist stems from her role as one of the “founding mothers” of the breast cancer advocacy movement in the early 1990s, when she was one of the founders of the National Breast Cancer Coalition. President Clinton appointed her to the National Cancer Advisory Board, on which she served from 1998 to 2004, and she also started the first all-women breast center in Boston before developing a model for multidisciplinary breast care at the Revlon/UCLA Breast Center. Known as a trusted guide to women worldwide through her books and the foundation website, Dr. Love’s book, Dr. Susan Love’s Breast Book, was termed “the bible for women with breast cancer” by The New York Times. Dr. Susan Love’s Menopause and Hormone Book, first published in 1998 and revised in 2003, was one of the first to sound the alarm against the long-term use of postmenopausal hormones. Her other book, Live a Little, encourages women to take a reasonable approach to becoming healthy. The sixth edition of Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book was released in September 2015 along with a Spanish translation, El Libro de la Mama. In June 2012, Dr. Love was diagnosed with leukemia and underwent chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant. She returned to work in January 2013, more determined than ever to find the cause of cancer and end it once and for all.

When Westlake Village resident Sherri Rosenthal, THEN 60, LEARNED SHE HAD STAGE 1 BREAST CANCER IN
2013, SHE REACTED CALMLY. Even though the invasive ductal cancer tumor in her left breast was small and not aggressive, she told the breast surgeon she wanted both breasts removed. Rosenthal was notified by the radiologist that read her mammogram that she had dense tissue. Once notified, she opted to have an ultrasound. Rosenthal’s tumor only showed up on the ultrasound and not the mammogram. The California Breast Density Notification Law had just gone into effect in April 2013 and requires imaging centers to notify patients who have dense breasts. “I wasn’t that upset,” says Rosenthal. “At the time, the breast surgeon didn’t believe I needed the bilateral mastectomy, but I knew it was right for me.” There was no family history of breast cancer in Rosenthal’s family but because she is of Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry, she had genetic testing done. She was notified that she has the BRCA 2 genetic mutation. Rosenthal later learned that her heritage has a risk of 1 in 40 BReast CAncer (BRCA) mutations while the general population is 1 in 500. Her risk of another breast cancer was high, so the decision to have the full mastectomy was the right one. Both of her daughters also carry the genetic mutation and are monitored closely. Her younger daughter, at age 28, had a preventive double mastectomy and reconstruction after a very large tumor was found. Fortunately, it was benign. TAKING CONTROL, BECOMING WHOLE
(CON TI N UED)
EVENT DAY This year’s P.ink Day will be held in 14 cities across the U.S., including Canada. In Moorpark at Clear Vision Tattoo, five artists will transform lives on Sunday, Oct. 13. Rosenthal says Owner Rick Sutherland believes in giving back and does a lot of scar work in addition to mastectomy tattoos. “The artists are devoted to this day,” says Rosenthal. “Last year a few of the artists couldn’t finish in one day but devoted enough time to finish the tattoos later.” Rosenthal says the day of the event runs smoothly. A meet and greet is held the night before with the recipients and artists viewing the final sketches and making any last-minute design adjustments. “(Last year) we could not have gotten better matches,” says Rosenthal. “Our recipients had very different requests and the matching with artists went perfectly.” Event day begins in the morning with the artists transferring the design onto tracing paper and applying it to the woman’s chest, leaving a purple outline to begin outlining. Snacks, lunch and beverages are served throughout the eight-hour day. “We try to discourage the women from looking in the mirror during the day. We love to have the big reveal once the tattooing is done, when each woman looks in the mirror,” says Rosenthal. “The process is exhausting but the women get something of their own choosing instead of the scars, that are constant reminders of what was done to them.” Each woman brings a support person to hold their hand, if needed. The support person also reads out loud love notes from family and friends as the recipient is being tattooed. “The day is about making these women whole,” says Rosenthal. “There’s a saying that tattoos are the scars that you choose. It’s extremely personalized.” 28
Conejo Valley Lifestyle | October 2019
THE FINAL SAY Breast cancer survivors from Bakersfield, Carson, Downtown Los Angeles, West Hollywood, Rosenthal’s friend from Pittsburgh and Kim Pusl of Simi Valley were last year’s recipients. In 2012, Pusl, 47, had a 14-centimeter (5.51 inches) benign tumor removed from her right breast. “I said (to the doctor) okay, let’s fix this,” says Pusl. After her mastectomy and reconstruction surgery, Pusl was left with 18-and-a-half inches of scarring. She began researching options for covering up her scars and discovered P.ink on social media. She immediately applied for last year’s P.ink Day. “I was crazy excited (when I was chosen),” says Pusl. Pusl’s tattoo was designed by her friend that consisted of Poinsettia, Marigold and Larkspur flowers representing her two daughters and Pusl’s birth months held together by a pink ribbon. The hummingbird that was also incorporated represented her husband. “He was always flying around protecting me,” says Pusl. During the event, the tattoo took eight hours and a remaining three sessions were scheduled to finish the masterpiece. Pusl says she didn’t feel the pressure of the tattoo needle because she was so numb from her scarring. Her support friend read her inspiring notes from family and friends. “They were reminding me of my strength, that they were proud of me and excited that I was able to have this done,” says Pusl. When the process was completed, Pusl knew she came out on top. “I looked in the mirror and I thought, ‘I win’,” says Pusl. “I got the final say. I earned those scars but now they are mine.” If there is one thing Rosenthal wants people to understand about P.ink is that it is available and acceptable. “Most doctors are very supportive of it and in a situation when you are diagnosed, there’s very little you have control over,” says Rosenthal. “This is where you take control back. It can be more healing than people even think.”

(CON TI N U ED)
“As women share their experiences,” Baharouzi continues, “it is a joy to see participants and staff make connections at the center; many become lifelong friends.” One Cancer Support Community program, Comedy Night, allows participants to focus on laughter as the best medicine. Baharouzi marvels at how she experiences different senses of humor and how comedy can coexist with a cancer diagnosis. “Ann has made some of the most beautiful bras and takes the samples on tour with her,” says Baharouzi. “It’s a unique experience, comical and uplifting.” Everyone has art inside of them. Many art forms take survivors away from the immediate “scary.” Baharouzi has seen how humor and other creative outlets inspire people to lighten up and ward off fear so they can focus on healing and recovery. It’s a recurring theme you’ll find within this community.
View these bras at the Paint the Town Pink annual fundraiser at the Oaks Mall on Oct. 1. All proceeds directly support CSCVVSB programs and services. In addition, the backstage areas have also been given a facelift, including the creation of a luxurious star’s suite, complete with a dressing room and a comfortable living room for greeting guests. New additions in the main lobby level will also be unveiled during the October celebration. A new history wall showcases the past 25 years in the theatre, and an artist’s autograph wall in the Founder’s level lobby will feature ceramic tiles signed by many of the performers. “About four years ago, we started asking artists to sign ceramic tiles; it will be impossible to display them all, so we will move them in and out, displaying about 100 tiles on an ever-evolving wall,” says McComb. MARK YOUR CALENDARS! The two weekends of activities kick off on Friday, October 4, with a Gala dinner celebration hosted by the Thousand Oaks Alliance for the Arts, the in-house presenter of some 60 shows annually. The Gala event is a fundraiser to support theatre operations and arts education artreach programs and includes dinner, drinks and a special performance with Herb Alpert and Lenny Hall. Tickets are available at TOArts.org for $250. On Sunday, October 6, 18-year-old Jackie Evancho returns to the Civic Arts Plaza, where she first played five years ago at age 13! Then, on Friday, October 11, former Ms. America Vanessa Williams presents her only West Coast performance, and on Saturday, October 12, the Civic Arts Plaza’s three resident companies perform Hollywood On Stage. 5-Star Theatricals, New West Symphony and Pacific Festival Ballet join forces to showcase the silver screen’s greatest hits in music, dance and theatre. Journeying from stage to screen and back again, the three companies present a show-stopping tribute to Hollywood glamour and legends, weaving together the very best of the love stories, sad stories and the grandest adventures. VIP Premiere Seats include dinner at the theatre! Finally, on Sunday, October 13, starting at 1 p.m., everyone is invited to an Open House at City Hall and the entire Civic Arts Plaza complex for a behindthe-scenes tour. Guests will enjoy entertainment, food trucks and informative tours of the various services provided onsite as they walk through the city’s various departments and backstage areas of the theatre. “It’s a great opportunity to see how we do what we do and get a view of the theatre that the general public isn’t typically able to experience,” says McComb, adding that he is proud to play a part in bringing the arts to Thousand Oaks. “We see kids who have come up through 5-Star Theatrical’s (formerly Cabrillo Musical Theatre) junior program that are now on Broadway, so our theatres really serve as a launch pad for young people,” says McComb. The high caliber of live performances taking place throughout the years at the Civic Arts Plaza has a real impact on the community and “gives people a reason not to get in the car and drive to L.A.,” he laughs.
“WE SEE KIDS WHO HAVE COME UP THROUGH 5-STAR THEATRICAL’S (FORMERLY CABRILLO MUSICAL THEATRE) JUNIOR PROGRAM THAT ARE NOW ON BROADWAY, SO OUR THEATRES REALLY SERVE AS A LAUNCH PAD FOR YOUNG PEOPLE.”

By considering all of these factors and focusing on each patient’s individual short-term and long-term health goals, Dr. Clair creates a proactive plan to meet their individualized goals. LIFESTYLE FACTORS “The same principles that reduce your risk of breast cancer also reduce the risk of heart disease, colon cancer, diabetes and most other health conditions,” says Dr. Clair, adding, “More time needs to be spent educating men and women about what they can do to minimize their risk of developing breast cancer in the first place.” EXERCISE Overweight women have twice the risk of women with healthy body fat percentages of developing breast cancer, says Dr. Clair, citing one French study involving 4 million women: “It doesn’t matter how old the woman is, or what type of exercise they do; it’s how much they weigh, i.e., how much excess body fat they have” that influences their risk of breast cancer. A strong inverse relationship exists between exercise and risk. During adolescence, exercise is important for reducing the risk of premenopausal breast cancer, and long-term activity level is important for postmenopausal risk, he explains. “The more exercise a woman gets, the less likely she is to get breast cancer,” he says. DIET Eating a plant-based diet with less meat reduces breast cancer risk by lowering exposure to anabolic steroids, heterocyclic amines, fat and pollutants, he notes, pointing to a United Kingdom study which showed more than 14,000 excess cases of breast cancer per year due to a diet deficient in fruits and vegetables 10 years prior. Dr. Clair recommends following basic dietary guidelines to reduce breast cancer risk: + Eat organically and plant-based, avoiding sugar and processed carbs, alcohol and dairy + Eating eggs leads to three times the risk of breast cancer + Vegetables, especially cruciferous veggies, are protective, as are onions and mushrooms—eat them daily + Eating fruit, namely ORGANIC strawberries blocks DNA damage and apples especially reduce risk + Soy products actually reduce risk and improve survival by binding preferentially to ERb receptors, which are antiproliferative + Green tea, turmeric and ground flax seeds are anti-estrogenic; consume them frequently + Vitamin D reduces risk of breast, colon and prostate cancer; take at least 2,000 IU daily + DHA supplementation of 100 mg is an anti-inflammatory and as such reduces one of the promoters of cancer. SLEEP & REDUCING STRESS The importance of quality sleep should not be overlooked, says Dr. Clair, as melatonin produced during sleep has been shown to reduce breast cancer risk. Excess chronic stress, which impacts sleep for many, also affects overall health. “Stress is a huge monster these days,” notes Dr. Clair, who recommends taking steps to reduce stress, including journaling, laughing (watch comedies), avoiding negativity and doing yin yoga or other style of relaxing, restorative yoga. Hot yoga or other style of exercise-focused yoga, while helpful as exercise may not reduce stress. AVOIDING HARMFUL SUBSTANCES Alcohol is carcinogenic in any dose, notes Dr. Clair, adding that some 5,000 cases of cancer each year are related to consumption of even moderate amounts— even a single drink per day. Environmental exposure to various risk factors also impact breast cancer risk, Dr. Clair cautions, specifically advising people to avoid the following when possible: + Polycyclic aromatic compounds (released by grilling food) + Bisphenol A found in plastic bottles, food containers, known as a xenoestrogen + Herbicides and pesticides + Parabens in haircare products
THE BOTTOM LINE When it comes to the impact lifestyle factors have on breast cancer risk, “it’s typically not just one reason; it’s all connected,” says Dr. Clair. “You can’t ignore any one of those aspects if you really want to be optimally healthy.” Noting that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound

WOMEN IN THE UNITED STATES AND 1 IN 8 WOMEN WILL BE DIAGNOSED WITH BREAST CANCER DURING THE COURSE OF THEIR LIFETIME, SO TAKING STEPS TO KEEP YOUR BREASTS HEALTHY IS KEY. Routine care is the best way to ensure breast health, and getting a regular mammogram plays a big role in detecting breast cancer at its earliest stages, when it is most treatable. When found early when it is still localized, or restricted to the site of origin, without evidence of spread, breast cancer patients have a relative survival rate at five years of around 98%, according to the National Cancer Institute. When found at a late stage (spread to distant parts of the body), the breast cancer survival rate at five years drops to about 23%. “It is quite devastating for patients when a cancer diagnosis is delayed,” says Dr. Laura Doepke, an Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Radiological Sciences at the

David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, who specializes in breast imaging, particularly imaging of breast cancer. “I don’t want women to wait; we want to screen them, because we want to find it before you can feel it—the shortlived compression of the breast during a mammogram is absolutely worth the long-term benefits,” she adds. Early detection and improved treatment have led to decreased mortality rates for those diagnosed with breast cancer, and screening reduces mortality by more than 40% in women 40 and older, says Dr. Doepke, also the medical director of the new UCLA Westlake Village Women’s Imaging Center that recently opened its doors to provide local women with potentially life-saving imaging services. “In an effort to reach the communities that previously had to drive to our central hubs in Westwood and Santa Monica, the Westlake Village Women’s Imaging Center offers a high level of care by highly specialized physicians—the majority are exclusively breast doctors,” says Dr. Doepke. “We know the need is there. Our primary care doctors in the area would really like for their patients to receive all their care nearby, so they don’t have to drive far. Patients are going to get the same care here in Westlake Village than if they’d driven to UCLA’s main centers in Westwood or Santa Monica,” adds Dr. Doepke, who also practices at UCLA Westwood, UCLA Santa Monica Barbara Kort Women’s Imaging Center, the breast imaging practice at the Motion Picture and Television Health Fund, and the Santa Clarita breast imaging facility, in addition to training residents and teaching UCLA fellows. FULL SERVICE Open five days a week, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Westlake Village Women’s Imaging Center provides a full range of imaging services, including + Interventional Procedures + Mammography (2D and 3D) + MRI + Ultrasound + DEXA. As a professor of breast imaging at UCLA Health System since 2009, Dr. Doepke notes that technological advances in imaging, such as 3D mammography (Tomosynthesis), offer several advantages for patients. “Breast imaging has changed a lot in the past 10 years, with the advent of 3D mammography, as well as new treatments for breast cancer, which are changing, improving and evolving over time,” she says, noting 3D mammography has been shown to detect more cancers earlier and to decrease the number of call-back rates.

IS THE BEST PROTECTION
BREAST CANCER IS THE SECOND MOST COMMON CANCER AND THE SECOND LEADING CAUSE OF CANCER-RELATED DEATH IN WOMEN, REPRESENTING APPROXIMATELY 14% OF ALL NEW CANCER CASES IN THE UNITED STATES. Treatments for breast cancer have significantly advanced and survival rates have steadily improved since the 1990s. Early detection has contributed greatly, and one of the easiest things every woman can do is to perform regular breast self-exams, which may help identify breast cancer in its early stages. Following are some tips for performing a breast self-examination as well as what to look for from Cathy J. F. Cole, NP, MPH, CHES, FNCBC, Oncology Nurse Navigator Breast Program at Los Robles Health System. HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU PERFORM A BREAST EXAM? Monthly. For those with menstrual cycles, exams should be completed five days after the cycle ends. For those who are menopausal, any date of each month. 54

middle of your breasts; use firm pressure for the deep tissue in the back. When you've reached the deep tissue, you should be able to feel down to your ribcage. WHAT’S NORMAL AND WHAT’S NOT? There is no “normal” or “standard” breast among women. Breasts differ in size, shape and density, and often one breast will be slightly different from its pair. Pregnancy, as well as monthly cycles, can change the size and tenderness of your breasts. If you feel a hard fixed irregular lump or experience a retracted nipple or clear or bloody discharge, contact your health care provider for further evaluation. DOES A BREAST SELF-EXAM REPLACE MAMMOGRAPHY IF ALL IS CLEAR? Never. Mammograms are still the gold standard for finding abnormalities as well as defining any new change with ultrasound. New 3-D mammography allows the radiologist to see the breast tissue in greater detail as it takes approximately 300 images, as compared to traditional 2-D mammography, which only covers the top and side of the breast. For women with dense breasts, 3-D mammography is particularly valuable. For more information about 3-D mammography or to schedule a mammogram, contact the Los Robles Imaging Center at 805.523.8062. “I HAVE TO BE THANKFUL EVERY DAY FOR AN AMAZING NETWORK OF SUPPORT—FIRST, MY HUSBAND, WHO STANDS RIGHT BY MY SIDE THROUGH THIS; MY DAUGHTER WHO HAS NOW BECOME A CAREGIVER; AND MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS WHO TEXT, EMAIL, CALL, VISIT, SEND CARDS AND GIVE THE MOST LOVING HUGS, WHICH SPEAK VOLUMES! I WOULD SAY THAT THE PROTECTIVE BUBBLE AROUND ME IS THAT I GOT MY MAMMOGRAM EVERY YEAR, WITHOUT FAIL, IN LARGE PART BECAUSE I FELT LIKE IT WAS PART OF MY JOB DESCRIPTION TO DO IT! IT WAS THROUGH THE MAMMOGRAM IN MARCH THAT THE LUMP WAS DETECTED AND THE CANCER WAS FOUND EARLY. MY PROGNOSIS IS VERY GOOD AND I HAVE A NICELY SHAPED BALD HEAD... AND FOR THAT I AM ALSO GRATEFUL!” —MONICA
