father is a working professional musician, I was always able to have a guiding light in my father and work ethic from my mother. WHEN AND HOW DID YOUR MUSIC JOURNEY BEGIN? My mother got me into piano lessons at 8 years old and the rest is history. WHAT KIND OF GENRE OR STYLE WOULD YOU CONSIDER YOUR MUSIC TO BE? I consider it an intersection of R&B, Pop, Rock, Soul, Reggae, and Blues WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE TIME WITH SIMS FOUNDATION SO FAR? For one of my earliest concerts after switching to the guitar, SIMS Foundation partnered with me and helped me get the word out for the show. The show was held at The Sahara Lounge and ended up going really well! WHAT IS YOUR ASPIRING GOAL IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY FOR THE NEXT YEAR? Survive this pandemic, take the broken pieces of the industry and put them back together again but this time with equity and inclusion in mind. No more of these “big industry, if you don’t have Spotify numbers you’re meaningless” garbage attitudes, and more focus on the amazing community of music we have in this town. More focus on sharing our talents with each other no matter what type of music we do, who we are, or how we identify. WHY DO YOU FEEL THE AUSTIN COMMUNITY CONNECTS WITH MUSIC SO EASILY, AND WHAT EFFECT DO YOU THINK MUSIC HAS ON HUMANITY? There just isn’t anything like getting together with your friends, posting up with a cooler, and listening and/or dancing to music. This experience has always been at the center of the Austin, Texas Live Music Capital of The World lifestyle. 18

THE GIFTED SPIRIT OF A YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR ME & THE BEES IS A SOCIAL GOODNESS BRAND GALVANIZING AN INFLUENTIAL GENERATION OF BEE-LIEVERS.
WHEN MIKAILA ULMER WAS JUST FOUR YEARS OLD, SHE WAS STUNG BY TWO BEES IN THE SAME WEEK. Her parents encouraged her to do some research on the bees rather than being upset with them. Upon discovering the important role that bees play in our ecosystem, Mikaila was determined to help them. Using her Great Granny Helen’s flaxseed honey lemonade recipe, Mikaila launched her business from her home in Austin, Texas in 2009. Landing a deal with Daymond John on the show Shark Tank was just the beginning of Me & the Bees’ many business successes. Today, the award-winning lemonade is buzzing off the shelves of Whole Foods Markets, Wegmans, and natural and organic food stores across the country. At just 13 years old, Mikaila has shared her story with Good Morning America, NBC News, The Real, Forbes and TIME among others, and has been invited to speak on social entrepreneurship at prestigious gatherings including the White House United State of Women Summit, where she introduced President Barack Obama, Microsoft We Day, alongside Satya Nadella and the Dell Women’s Entrepreneur Network Summit in South Africa. 20

“Don’t be discouraged by life’s little stings, get back up and spread your wings.” —Mikaila Ulmer, CEO Me & the Bees premium lemonade is sweetened with honey, containing BEE-utifully simple ingredients, including mint, ginger, prickly pear, and black tea. Every bottle is “Clean Label” (containing no high-fructose corn syrup, preservatives, or artificial flavors!) Glass bottles are sustainable and fully recyclable! Giving back has always been our mission at Me & the Bees. From the very beginning, Mikaila invested a portion of the profits from the sale of her lemonade to organizations fighting hard to save the honey bees—organizations like Heifer International (provides gifts of honey to needy families around the world, stimulating growth of the bee crops through pollination), Texas Beekeepers Assocation (supports ongoing research through Texas A&M University on the preservation of bees in the state of Texas), and the Sustainable Food Center of Austin (helping strengthen the local food system and improving access to nutritious, affordable food). Me & the Bees encourages everyone to Buy a Bottle...Save the Bees. Most recently, Mikaila launched her own nonprofit, Healthy Hive Foundation. Through research, education and preservation, the Healthy Hive Foundation is dedicated to increasing honeybee awareness and the number of safe environments for bees to survive and thrive. After all, our fuzzy friends are the littlest and biggest links in our food chain and they need our help to stay busy, healthy, and productive! Mikaila’s influence lies in her story, with many of her users engaging with posts about how she built her company. Her story is mentioned most on Twitter. Mikaila’s largest followings are on Facebook and Instagram*. “Give it up for Mikaila with her entrepreneurial self. Becca Friday - Certified Barre Instructor through Pure Barre. First aid & CPR certified She met Ingrid in her intro chemistry class her freshman year & they instantly clicked on another level due to their similar interests & drives. Ingrid, Becca, and Isabella decided to join forces & do something this summer that would contribute to their community & take advantage of their certifications as instructors. Becca was motivated to make a difference, however small, during this time of chaos in the world & help to encourage those to stay active & positive in the midst of stressful situations. She loves that her gift is not only benefiting those who take her class, but also helping the local Austin Dell Medical School (where they chose to donate 100% of proceeds). We wanted to help out our community during the COVID-19 pandemic while doing what we love. Since we are all fitness instructors, we decided to launch our organization. Social distancing can often cause many to lose their sense of purpose, yet, fitness, regardless of COVID, is a great way to reconnect with yourself and with others, and makes you feel your best. Sweat X Serve has been a great opportunity for us to learn how to run a business including management, recruiting instructors, and organizing and planning the content of the classes. As pre-healthcare professionals, our future venture will be related to the business of healthcare where we plan to use the skills we have developed with Sweat X Serve. To participate in a class and to receive the weekly schedule please email us at sweatxserve@gmail.com. For frequent updates and our weekly schedules, follow us at @sweatxserve on Instagram. We have done private classes for organizations, clubs, and businesses that were interested in donating to our cause. If your organization is interested in a private class please email us at sweatxserve@gmail.com. CityLifestyle.com/Austin

requirements as human products. Vets are able to prescribe neurotoxins and manufacturers didn’t have to report risks and side effects. We started working with a group to lobby through grassroots advocacy and support to get that changed and ultimately were successful! At the same time that everything was going on with Luna, and I was researching solutions, my grandmother gave me her old cedar chest. I was literally sitting on the cedar chest watching Luna and I had this “ah-ha!” moment. I realized that cedar had been used for centuries to protect us from bugs, so why couldn’t we create a safe product with cedar that would protect against harmful insect pests? I reached out to an extraction facility to look into how to get cedar oil and we were excited to find that our solution could also be sustainable. That was important to me. I started working on formulations that we took to efficacy labs and officially founded Wondercide in 2009 with pest protection for dogs, cats, people, and homes. In the early days, my partner and I mixed batches of our spray, bottled it by hand, and sold it online. We also sold it at farmers’ markets and handed out samples to everyone we met. We grew the business selling direct-to-consumer online and started selling to pet specialty retailers after customers were asking their favorite pet stores to carry our products. Luna and I had 2,190 more wonderful days together – enough time for her to witness the birth and rise of her legacy, Wondercide. She was 16 when we finally said goodbye and CONTINUED >

LOCAL LIMELIGHT (CONTINUED) the day of her passing, I received a call from Shark Tank to appear on their show. I was grieving and unsure, but I knew I had to do it for Luna and for all the families out there who I knew we could help. I appeared on Shark Tank, which aired in March 2016. Lori Greiner’s offer made Wondercide the largest valuation of any female-founded and owned company in the history of Shark Tank to date. We didn’t end up taking the deal but instead chose to remain self-funded. Shark Tank helped us introduce Wondercide to millions of families though, and for that I’m ever grateful. Since Shark Tank, we’ve grown exponentially and continue to help families everywhere. Wondercide products are formulated with the highest-quality ingredients that are powered by nature, eco-friendly, biodegradable, and made without artificial colors, or fragrances. Wondercide is a plant-based solution that actually works. Our efficacy studies prove it delivers the results you expect from conventional flea-and-tick meds and pest control services without the toxic ingredients. I’ve always believed that “when you know better, you do better.” I set out to advocate for change that would keep families safe and today, we’re proud to share that over 800,000 families (and counting!) have been protected by Wondericide. You can purchase Wondercide online at Wondercide.com, on Amazon.com, on Chewy.com, and at select pet-specialty retailers nationwide.
“I SET OUT TO ADVOCATE FOR CHANGE THAT WOULD KEEP FAMILIES SAFE AND TODAY, WE’RE PROUD TO SHARE THAT OVER 800,000 FAMILIES (AND COUNTING!) HAVE BEEN PROTECTED BY WONDERICIDE.”

FUN PAPER CRAFT PROJECTS FOR YOU + YOUR KIDDO ARTICLE NICOLETTE MARTIN
M AT E R I A L S + Cardboard + White crepe paper + Construction paper + Glue + Scissors + Beads, yarn, pom poms, etc.
DIRECTIONS 1. Take your cardboard and cut two pieces into the shape of a llama (we found a stencil online). Then, cut strips of cardboard the depth you want your llama to be. You’ll connect these to either side of the llama cutouts to enclose your piñata. 2. Glue your strip of cardboard all along the edge of one side of your llama, then glue to the other side. (Be sure to leave a hole you can close up later so you can fill it with your favorite candy!)
PIÑLLAMA
3. Starting at the neck, cover the front, back and sides of your llama with white crepe paper, cutting a slit every half inch or so to create the traditional piñata look. 4. Cover all remaining sides the neck and head with white construction paper, cut to fit your design. 5. Using construction paper, beads, pom poms, tassels, buttons, etc., add some flair to the rest of your llama! Bonus points for incorporating different shapes and textures into your final product.
