ROSEMARY ALLISON

NAMED WOMAN OF THE YEAR 2020 BY ASSEMBLYMEMBER JACQUI IRWIN

The annual Woman of the Year celebration is sponsored every year by the California Legislative Women’s Caucus as part of the Women’s History Month

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 21, 2020 CONTACT: Karie Portillo (805) 312-8445 or karie.portillo@asm.ca.gov

Santa Rosa Valley Resident named Assembly District 44 Woman of the Year SACRAMENTO – Every year, the California Legislative Women’s Caucus sponsors the annual “Woman of the Year” celebration as part of Women’s History Month. This year, Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin (D-Thousand Oaks) named Santa Rosa Valley resident, Rosemary Allsion, as her 2020 Woman of the Year. “It is a great joy to honor powerful women that are pillars of our community every year,” said Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin. “Rosemary’s life-long dedication to bringing people together for the greater good has made her an incredible leader in our community. Known for her philanthropy and her business acumen, year after year she has worked to raise funds for the American Cancer Society, Y.M.C.A. and For The Troops; that’s why I’m proud to honor her as the 2020 Woman of the Year.” Rosemary serves as an elected member of the Santa Rosa Valley Municipal Advisory Council, which has overseen the development of a local equestrian and hiking park, supported the installation of traffic lights and provided emergency housing for animals during wildfires. Long known for her interest in public safety, she has also helped to establish the Santa Rosa Valley Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) that links the community with information on fire updates, mountain lion sightings, and local crimes. She currently serves on the Board of For The Troops, a nonprofit that ships 2,000 “We Care” packages to deployed servicemembers each month. For the last three years, she has also chaired the annual gala at The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library to raise funds to mitigate the $30,000 monthly postage. Additionally, Rosemary is a successful businesswoman, recognized by the Wall Street Journal as one of the Top 250 realtors in the United States. Due to the unprecedented spread of COVID-19, the Woman of the Year luncheon and celebration that had been scheduled to take place on March 23rd in Sacramento have been cancelled. Nevertheless, Rosemary will be celebrated locally on a later date. Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin represents California’s 44th Assembly District, which includes the communities of Camarillo, Lake Sherwood, Moorpark, Oak Park, Oxnard, Port Hueneme, Santa Rosa Valley, Thousand Oaks, and Westlake Village.

Rosemary can give you advice on improvements that will highlight your home’s strengths, downplay its weakness and appeal to the greatest possible pool of prospective buyers. I am flattered to receive this honor and be placed in such distinguished ranks as those of the past honorees. These women exemplify courage, dedication and a determination to build a better quality of life for our community, helping future generations face the challenges that are put in front of them. 10 WAYS TO BENEFIT FROM DOWNTIME

The Chinese symbol for crisis encompasses both danger and opportunity. What is the opportunity for us while dealing with the Coronavirus? 01 To practice relaxation or meditation techniques. Simply close your eyes and follow your breath with your mind as your breath comes in and goes out. Continue to let go as you practice. 02 To do things you did not have time for. Like read a book or paint a room, listen to music or communicate with friends or family. 03 To practice becoming the observer of your thoughts to access a healthy relaxed state of mind which puts you into your peaceful zone. 04 To find a way to be empathetic, positive and helpful toward others. 05 To get to know yourself in a deeper less anxious state. Being with yourself without distractions will bring up feelings below the surface. WORKING FROM HOME

ARTICLE KIMBERLY BLAKER

WITH KIDS DURING COVID-19

AS COVID-19 SWEEPS THE PLANET AND COUNTRY AND SHELTER IN PLACE ORDERS AND PRECAUTIONS ARE TAKEN TO PROTECT OUR HEALTH, AMERICANS ARE TRYING TO ADJUST TO A NEW NORMAL. School and work closures have families staying home except for essential needs. Kids are already feeling stuck and miss their friends, activities and routines. Many parents, however, are learning how to work from home while juggling educating and caring for their kids. This new family dynamic, coupled with the anxiety and stress of what is happening in the world, may make it seem impossible to get anything done. The following tips can help you develop a routine and environment that works best for you and your family.

WORKING FROM HOME (CONTINUED)

20

Malibu Coast Lifestyle | June 2020

DESIGNATE A WORKSPACE Having a particular place in which you work can help set you up for success. If you are not used to working from home, creating a space that feels like going to a workplace can get you into a better routine and improve your focus. Try to create your workplace away from the main areas of your home and, if possible, with a door you can close. These tricks will also help remind your kids not to disturb you when you are in your workspace. Make your workspace as similar to the one at your job as possible. You can also play music or wear noise-cancelling headphones to reduce distractions if another adult or older child is there to care for the younger ones. Once you do arrive at your workspace, reset to adjust your mind from home life to work life. ASK FOR HELP This is not the time to try to do everything yourself. If you have a partner at home, take turns spending time with the kids so you can each have uninterrupted time to focus on work or time to yourself to recharge. If you are feeling overwhelmed or are struggling to get something done for work, talk to your boss or team about the situation before things become too difficult. Everyone is affected in some way by the COVID-19 outbreak and therefore, will likely understand. If you are struggling to balance work and being home with the kids, try talking to them at their level. Kids are more aware and understanding than we often realize. So an open conversation with them may help. BE FLEXIBLE No one knows how long this is going to last, and everything about sheltering in place is new. So realize it will take time to adjust. Even if a strategy works one day, it may not work the next. This is a difficult time for kids as well, who may not fully understand what is going on or be able to handle it emotionally. Unexpected things will come up in your work, with your kids or any other aspect of your life. So, try to build in some wiggle room because you will likely need to make changes as you go. For example, if the day is going really smoothly, perhaps work a little longer to accomplish a bit more in case things do not go smoothly on another day. STAY POSITIVE Focus on the positive aspects of being home with your kids, even while trying to work and adapt to this new and unusual situation. Remember, the circumstance is only temporary. Things will eventually get done, and everyone is trying their best to manage right now with their own set of challenges and obstacles. Try to balance work and quality time with your family while you are all stuck at home. The effort you make to do so can help your family bond and turn a tumultuous time into one filled with good memories. Kimberly Blaker is a freelance parenting writer. Dan Katz, MD

At the state and local level, Katz says communities can better prepare for future public health crises. “We need to get a better understanding of a community’s needs, perform gap analyses, identify the people who are the most vulnerable and look at our available supplies,” says Katz. “In Malibu, we’ve relied on various organizations for support and should encourage coordinated efforts between public institutions and private or faith-based organizations.” Katz stresses self-care for the mind and body during the quarantine and states that taking care of our fellow community members is more important than ever.

“Now that we’ve entered this social isolation, we should take advantage of this newfound time at home,” says Katz. “Parents that have traditionally worked long hours should enjoy the time they have with their children. Individuals may find fulfillment in performing a random act of kindness or picking up a new hobby. One can Facetime with friends and provide them support. We are a resilient nation and I know we’ll get through this soon.”
