races, backgrounds, and origin stories. This month, it was heavy on our hearts that we shine a light on the diversity that makes our community such a fantastic place to live. In every issue, I strive to present a magazine that reflects our diversity, but this month is a little different. We've tried to narrow our focus to tell stories that reflect our minority brothers and sisters. I'll be honest. I don't know what it's like to be a person of color in America right now. I don't face discrimination based on the color of my skin. I don't fear police. And while I haven't experienced those fears, that doesn't mean that I can't listen and try to empathize with those that have experienced this and try to make sure that my actions are helping, not hindering progress. I can teach my kids that racism is never acceptable and that it's not enough to ignore it. We have to actively choose to make sure that our society is for all of us, not the lucky few.

but with enough people listening on all sides, there's a path to peace. Hopefully, our magazine will always be a mouthpiece for those seeking to build bridges, not walls. Thank you for reading. Thank you for listening. Thank you for making our community stronger because of its differences, not in spite of them.

HOT SPOT (CONTINUED)

Wings Cafe While some big-name chains have made their mark on the wing nationwide, Northland wing-lovers know that there's one destination for the serious fan--Wings Cafe on Englewood Road. For the last eight years, Eze Redwood and his family have reimagined what chicken could be. Redwood, whose family is originally from Arkansas, says that they went back home to learn the nuts and bolts of what makes a great wing. "We went to this guy that was really like a pitmaster but for wings and tried to learn all that we could. He's retired now, but he was the best in the business," says Redwood. Bringing that knowledge home, Redwood and his family created a menu that includes traditional favorites, but also offers creative sauces and dry rubs. There are 21 different sauces or dry rubs to choose from, ranging from Sweet Thai to Shanghai Bourbon to Firecracker. For the heat lovers, the Dynomite is the hottest on regular offer, but they are always fiddling around in the kitchen, coming up with new flavors. On a recent visit for curbside pickup, Redwood had to share some cool ranch Dorito flavored wings. They didn't disappoint. Diners can choose the sauces and rubs on both bone-in and boneless wings, as well as chicken strips. Wings Cafe doesn't stop at just wings though. They also offer shrimp and southern fried fish. For sides, look for southern favorites like fried okra, mac and cheese, and hush puppies. Or if you want to go all-in, ask for the sweet potato fries drizzled with caramel marshmallow sauce. The fries are soft and pliable, with just the right amount of salt; with the caramel sauce, these could easily be dessert. The family has recently taken over the space where Mudhole BBQ was on North Oak and has turned it into Batch Country Kitchen & Que, which they are using as an incubator for new dishes that may appear at Wings Cafe. Redwood says that they will play with more country-fried goodness there, as well as barbeque. Wings Cafe is clearly a fan favorite. They now have two locations after expanding to Westport a few years ago. And will there be more? Redwood and his team are taking it one day at a time right now. In the meantime, there are new sauces to dream up and new rubs to try. Check-in and see what they've cooked up this week. For a menu, visit TheWingsCafe.com. 16

IF YOU’VE LIVED IN THE NORTHLAND FOR ANY AMOUNT OF TIME, YOU KNOW THAT ONE OF THE BEST PLACES FOR AUTHENTIC MEXICAN FOOD IS IXTAPA FINE MEXICAN CUISINE. This Northland staple has been sharing their culture with us for years. Now, they share one of their favorite meals to prepare at home, Camarones a la Crema. Delicioso!

INGREDIENTS Sauteed Shrimp + 9 whole shrimp, peeled + 1/4 cup white wine + 1 tablespoon butter + 1 teaspoon finely chopped garlic + 1 tablespoon white onion, chopped + Kosher salt and black pepper to taste Creamy Sauce + 1/2 cup heavy cream + 1/4 cup sour cream + 1 poblano pepper + 1/4 cup cilantro + 1/2 julienned zucchini + 1/4 cup sweet corn + Oregano, salt and pepper to taste

DIRECTIONS In a pan, melt the butter and add garlic and onion; cook until translucent. Add the shrimp and season with salt and pepper. Saute for around three minutes. Add the wine and let reduce for one to two minutes and reserve. Char the poblano pepper over an open flame. Remove the skin and set aside. Blend the heavy cream, sour cream, cilantro, and the poblano peppers. Saute the zucchini with the sweet corn and add the creamy sauce mixture. Cook on medium heat for five minutes, add oregano, salt, and pepper if it is necessary. Serve with Mexican rice and black beans if you prefer.

NORTH KANSAS CITY LAW OFFICE USES ITS BUILDING TO REFLECT THE CITY'S DIVERSITY

WHEN A WALL BECOMES A BRIDGE ARTICLE RACHEL C. MURPHY | PHOTOGRAPHY ASHLEY ELWELL

WHEN MOST PEOPLE SEE A WALL, THEY SEE STRUCTURE OR STABILITY: A WAY TO KEEP THE ELEMENTS OUT AND THE PEOPLE IN. When Roger McCrummen, founding partner of McCrummen Immigration Law Group, looked at the back wall of his North Kansas City office, he saw a canvas. “I’ve actually wanted a mural for a couple of years. My wife, who works at the firm with me suggested that we go to the school and do a design contest. I thought it was a great idea,” says McCrummen. Another colleague connected McCrummen with Chico Sierra, the muralist that completed the work. 24

Northland Lifestyle | August 2020

Instead of just commissioning a piece, McCrummen decided to see what creativity could come from his community, specifically, North Kansas City High School. Northtown, as it’s colloquially called, is said to be the most diverse high school in the state of Missouri. With roughly 40 different languages spoken there, the school was the perfect place to launch a competition to find an artist to create a piece that spoke to the diversity of North Kansas City. As incentive, McCrummen was willing to award $1000 to the first place winner. Fine arts department chair and art teacher Josie Farrentelle thought that it was a great idea. She used it as a class assignment for her students, made a flyer to post around the school, and shared it with fellow teachers. The competition was open to anyone that wanted to create. Farrantelle said that she withheld the size of the finished space so as to not intimidate her students. “I think it would have been a little more overwhelming had they seen the size of the wall before they started. But I just asked them what diversity means to them, to us, to North Kansas City, how do you experience with your classmates and your peers? But we worked with Chico to figure out how to translate it to the wall,” says Farrantelle. Approximately 40 students submitted designs. McCrummen says that he was somewhat surprised by the positivity that he saw in many of the designs. “Thematically, we wanted to emphasize the positive aspects of diversity and immigration. With all that’s in the news, I would have expected students to put kids in cages and being separated from parents, and we didn’t want those kinds of images. We wanted this to last for a while and show the positive sides of immigration. The winning design, featuring an indigenous face with hair flowing into a map quilted

ROGER MCCRUMMEN

Northland Lifestyle | August 2020

“For a long time, I’ve been wanting to do some sort of art project for the school, something that shows what Northtown prides itself on--diversity and inclusion. When I saw what the contest was about, I instantly had an image of what I wanted it to look like. Normally, when that happens, it’s a sign for me to go ahead and do it,” says Parks. Once chosen, her design was given to Sierra to execute. No stranger to large canvases (he recently completed a mural memorializing George Floyd in the Crossroads area), Sierra added his own unique touches to make the art fit the space. “I made a few tweaks. I wanted to add the whole world map, whereas the original design cut off at one point. Then I just made it fit the space. The design was great. Each flag was its own challenge, and then we put the map on top,” says Sierra. Sierra says that he’s normally more of a freehand artist, but he was happy to interpret Parks’ design. “It was cool to do. It’s different than the stuff that I normally do, so it was a good challenge. And writing the words that she had put on there and translating them was fun and interesting. I’ve never written in Korean before!” Sierra says that he double checked some of the phrases with friends that speak the language to make sure he had everything right. With its completion, McCrumment hopes that this won’t be the last mural to find its home on his walls. “I know that North Kansas City is looking to add more street art. Maybe they need one of the other walls,” he chuckles. The piece resonates with locals as it celebrates the many facets of living in North

“I was a history teacher and it was a passion of mine to study local history, especially of Parkville. I dove in and was connected to some people that were working on the Banneker school. Later I was honored to be able to join the board,” says Singletary. The end goal, says Singletary, is to create a living history museum. Before they get there, though, several structural advances are needed.

PIÑLLAMA

+ Cardboard + White crepe paper + Construction paper + Glue + Scissors + Beads, yarn, pom poms, etc.

DIRECTIONS 1. Take your cardboard and cut two pieces into the shape of a llama (we found a stencil online). Then, cut strips of cardboard the depth you want your llama to be. You’ll connect these to either side of the llama cutouts to enclose your piñata. 2. Glue your strip of cardboard all along the edge of one side of your llama, then glue to the other side. (Be sure to leave a hole you can close up later so you can fill it with your favorite candy!) 3. Starting at the neck, cover the front, back and sides of your llama with white crepe paper, cutting a slit every half inch or so to create the traditional piñata look. 4. Cover all remaining sides of the neck and head with white construction paper, cut to fit your design. 5. Using construction paper, beads, pom poms, tassels, buttons, etc., add some flair to the rest of your llama! Bonus points for incorporating different shapes and textures into your final product.
