That's how one of my favorite holiday hymns begins and it's how this month ends. As Thanksgiving approaches, there's so much to be thankful for and it's a blessing just to be able to write about it! This month's issue is all about thankfulness. In our feature story, we learn the story of Éowyn Maynes, the five year old fighter that lost her battle with cancer in 2018. Although she has passed, her family has dedicated themselves to raising money to research pediatric cancers, which receive only 4% of the funding that is dedicated to cancer research. This year's toy drive for Children's Mercy Hospital received three carloads of toys to donate to kids going through the same thing that Éowyn did. Her spirit lives on through her family's efforts. On the subject of family and thankfulness, you'll notice that there's no publisher's letter this month. That's because Jeron and Zach Traphagen welcomed their second son,

For me and my house, we have a lot to be thankful for--my youngest, Indra, will celebrate her first birthday on November 1, we've had a fairly painless potty training season, and there are lots of new opportunities on the horizon. Our world continues to grow and I'm so glad to be a part of it, bringing you stories of our friends and neighbors each month. And I want to hear more! WHEN YOU HAVE SWEEPING VISTAS AND THE SOUND OF LOWING CATTLE AS YOUR SOUNDTRACK, YOU ARE LIVING THE GOOD LIFE. Smithville residents, Courtney and Kyle and their sons, John and Judd, recently moved into their newly built modern farmhouse by Owen Homes. They turned to Cara Massie of Cara Massie Designs for a bit of seasonal color and texture. Cara hails from Smithville where she loves lake life with her three children and husband. As an interior stylist she offers some tips on how to enliven your space, both indoor and outdoor, for the holiday season. Her honey pots for decor are Nell Hills and Thorny Creek Market in Smithville.

FRONT PORCH: 1. Layered rugs are really trendy right now and a great way to greet your guests. When choosing a rug, always ensure that the rug is as wide as your entire door threshold, including transom lights. This porch included a 5’ x 7’ base rug with a 3’ x 5’ throw rug over the top. 2. Autumn is Mother Nature’s time to shine. Let the gorgeous autumnal colors set the color palette for your fall decorating. This front porch is set with muted autumn tones. 3. Natural elements such as acorns, pinecones, wheat, and berries add depth and texture to indoor and outdoor decor. 4. Layering lanterns, pumpkins, and mums is a classic fall look that will carry you from September through Thanksgiving. Cara swapped out traditional bushel baskets for galvanized beverage tubs with gold handles this season.

DINING SPACE: 1. Adding copper mugs and brass brings both warmth and shine to your tabletop setting for Thanksgiving. 2. Decorating with fresh eucalyptus is simple and beautiful. Layer it like a garland around real pumpkins for a fresh centerpiece that will last for weeks. The eucalyptus will dry and last through the season. 3. Cara loves creating dining table centerpieces in hollowed-out fresh pumpkins using floral foam and fresh seasonal flowers, a tradition she carries forward from her mother. 4. Adding candles is a great way to add warmth and light as the days get shorter and temperatures drop. Brass candlesticks can be picked up from a secondhand store for inexpensive fall decor that will transition into the holidays. 20

Tip: Oversized pitchers and urns filled with stems are a quick and easy way to usher in seasonal foliage.

LIVING SPACE: 1. Swapping out pillows is a quick and easy way to add seasonal color to your living room without committing to orange, deep purples or mustard yellow all year long. 2. The artwork on the mantle helps everyone remember to practice gratitude during the Thanksgiving season. 3. Silver dollar eucalyptus will dry well and last all season on your mantle. 4. Fall is a great time to add wooden home decor accents along with seasonal foliage. November 2019 | Northland Lifestyle

ÉOWYN MAYNES: FOUGHT LIKE A PRINCESS A LITTLE GIRL WITH A BIG LEGACY

ARTICLE RACHEL C. MURPHY | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Northland Lifestyle | November 2019

ÉOWYN MAYNES WAS KNOWN AS THE ‘TINY TERRORIST’ BY HER PARENTS, K.C. AND AMANDA MAYNES. The youngest of their four daughters, Éowyn was sure that she had five parents and that three of them (her sisters) were pushovers. She was a fan of anything Disney, especially Mickey Mouse, and the more color, the better. She was full of life, energy, and spunk, and that is how she will be remembered. Éowyn lost her battle with cancer last year, and her parents, sisters, and the community of Smithville are dedicated to making sure her legacy lives on by helping others enduring the same hardships that she did. As a kid, Éowyn was rambunctious--she ran, played, did gymnastics, and threw herself into everything with vigor. When she was walking down the stairs in their home to her room one night, she tripped and bumped her head. Thinking it was mere toddler clumsiness, they took her to urgent care. After a trip to Children’s Mercy to rule out a concussion, they found something much more concerning--a tumor. After a CT scan, Éowyn was diagnosed with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG). This particular type of cancer centers in the pons, the area of the brain that controls autonomous functions such as breathing, heartbeat, balance, eating, and drinking. Its effects are severe and fatal and it is found almost exclusively in children. K.C. says that one of the many problems with DIPG is that it is not a solid tumor. Cancerous cells are mixed up with healthy tissue. While brain tumors are typically responsive to radiation, they react more poorly to chemotherapy. The Maynes family searched for alternative

therapies with the blessing of their oncologist from Children’s Mercy. “We looked for trials in the U.S. for drugs that might help, but there wasn’t a lot. We ended up going to Monterrey, Mexico, for a trial that a group of parents had had good results with,” says K.C. Even with this experimental study, Éowyn lived 342 days from diagnosis to passing. Eleven months is the average for this diagnosis, and the Maynes family, with the blessing and support of their doctors at Children’s Mercy, made the most of it. “We were told from day one; this is a death sentence. But we were also told, ‘Let’s see how far we can get. Let’s try to make it to a year.’ We worked with Dr. Kevin Ginn there, and he and his team were excellent. They worked with us; they were honest but compassionate, and willing to let us try new things. He was encourag-

at home with her for the long run. Amanda, a stay at home mom, was also devoted to her. For the time that she had, she had all the love that she could ask for. The Éowyn: Fight Like a Princess organization was started to help defray the costs of treatments and living for a family whose life was put on hold. The organization received a groundswell of support, and after her passing, the family decided to continue the work to support other families that were going through the same thing. One of their first yearly initiatives was a toy drive in cooperation with the Smithville public schools. Partnering with the school that Éowyn would have attended had she lived, they gathered toys for the kids undergoing treatment at Children’s Mercy. This is the second year for the drive, and they gathered three carloads of toys for Children’s Mercy Hospital. There will never be a replacement for Éowyn--her spark can never be replicated. But her family is soothed by the efforts to help other children that are struggling in the same way and hopeful for a time when childhood cancer is funded and fought with the same intensity as other cancers. Her spirit lives on, fighting year after year.

Wilson, and Gary Campbell are neighbors that had experienced the sport at some other Kansas City facilities but wanted something closer to their homes. “We went to a mutual friend’s birthday party at a similar concept and had a really good time, but we noticed a few things that were missing that would have made it a little more fun. Fast forward a few months, and we were sitting around a fire in my driveway, drinking and complaining that there wasn’t anything to do in Liberty. We all have families, and we are past the party stage. We wanted something more adult-oriented but not crazy and close to home. We wanted to make it more than just throwing an axe. We wanted to do it better,” says Barton. To that end, they found a space off of 291 Highway in Liberty and created a place where young and old alike could gather to throw axes, play yard games and have fun. There are 15 lanes for throwing a variety of different weapons from hatchets to throwing stars. For those that want just to hang out, patrons can grab a beer, cider or soft drink from the bar, bring in their food and relax at the wood hewn tables or throw some cornhole. Barton says that axe throwing is a sport that nearly anyone can do. He’s had kids as young as four years old, and people in their 90s participate, although the recommended age is 12 years old to start. As long as patrons have closed-toe shoes and the ability to throw, they are welcome.

“WE’VE HAD BOOK CLUBS COME IN TO THROW, MOM GROUPS. . . WE HAVE A WEDDING RECEPTION COMING UP. IT APPEALS TO EVERYONE,” SAYS BARTON.

Barton says that one of the more surprising things he’s discovered is that about two-thirds of his clients are women. “We’ve had book clubs come in to throw, mom groups. . . We have a wedding reception coming up. It appeals to everyone,” says Barton. Axe throwing is about precision, not strength. Weapons can be thrown overhand or underhand, depending on physical limitations. To make the sport safer, Woodchux has eliminated rubber mats to decrease the chance of bounce and separates lanes with a strong chain link fencing. Axe masters are also on hand to help novices become seasoned pros and have fun at the same time. While axe throwing may not help build up your woodpile, it will give you a change of pace from the standard pint at the bar this winter. For more information, visit WoodchuxKC.com. 32

A THANKSGIVING TABLE PHOTOGRAPHY TOM BARNHART TO CREATE A WHIMSICAL TABLESCAPE FOR YOUR THANKSGIVING GUESTS, ADD A POP OF BRIGHT COLOR USING FRESH FLORALS. Start with a linen table runner, and add a beautiful floral arrangement made in a real pumpkin. To add a little extra layer of color, paint the pumpkin a color that coordinates with your color scheme. Incorporating some brass candle sticks and faux eucalyptus stems gives this a sophisticated look. Simple neutral plates and linen napkins helps keep the focus on the centerpiece. Add vintage crystal stemware to dress up the table for guests.
