The front wheel weaves back and forth as he tries to gain control. He’s hit the pavement quite a few times and cried, but the next day he is back out there. He falls, he gets back up, makes some adjustments, maybe tries a new tactic. He’s going to get through this and be stronger because of it. It’s a familiar feeling. Over the past few weeks, we’ve had to pick ourselves up and keep going. The beautiful thing about this community is that when someone falls down, someone is

I have read post after post from Chilango, Mezedes, Ramsey’s, Paxton’s, Balance Café, The Works, Tano and so many, many more—all thanking the community for their support. I love seeing Mayor Kathy Bailey’s dinner posts … images of her family enjoying shrimp from Bishop’s Quarter or a growler from Narrow Path are a staple in my feed ... Our community is rallying behind local nonprofits like NEST Community Learning Center, LIFE Food Pantry and The Care Center—donating food and time to ensure those who need help the most in our community are receiving it ... Our Community, Coming Together It was a family outing for ice cream; a stop at a favorite café or coffee shop. It was helping those in dire need, supporting a locally owned business, keeping us motivated and moving. It was takeout and drive-up, drop-off and digital—while still staying safe (and six feet apart). Recognize any of these? Thanks to all who kept (keep!) us going.

Plaid Room Records. They opened just in time
for the holidays, aptly naming their new bike trail location with the two most perfectly descriptive words Vickie could think of: Trailside Provisions. “When you’re on the trail, ‘provisions’ is what you need … ‘provisions’ is a staple,” Vickie explains. A LITTLE SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE Trailside Provisions isn’t just a perfect name, its location is also the perfect spot for trail walkers, runners and bikers—everyone and anyone—to replenish. Take one step inside the shop, and you’ll be mesmerized by the sheer amount of deliciousness packed into the space. Of course, there’s the Larcombs’ staple of popular popcorn varieties (caramel, cheese, butter, or mixed; pop-n-pretzel, cinnamon toast caramel with a kick, or almond butter crunch; caramel with milk or dark chocolate … the list goes on), but the shop goes far beyond popcorn. For starters, Trailside carries a variety of artisanal, local products like Cooke Tavern soups, East Shore pretzels, All Byrd cookies and biscuits, Bert’s snack mixes, Adams Apple Butter, plus other rotating goodies from nearby makers that include jams, syrups, pancake and bread mixes, local honey and honey sticks. If it’s sweets you’re after, the shop’s display of chocolate-dipped treats is sure to satisfy any sweet tooth. Choose from pretzels, Oreos, graham crackers, Twinkies, Rice Krispie Treats, marshmallows, peanuts, raisins or malt balls—all dipped in chocolate and adorned with even more chocolate. Trailside even offers adult treats, like their selection of Camp Craft Cocktails. No, the Larcombs don’t sell alcohol, but they do offer a variety of glass jar infusion kits. With mix flavors ranging from Bloody Mary to Hibiscus Ginger Lemon, all you need for these cocktail starters is to add your own 12 ounces of alcohol, then simply refrigerate for a few days. Or, for more immediate enjoyment, drop a Woodford Reserve bourbon-soaked cherry into your favorite happy hour libation. Coffee lovers will find gourmet varieties from La Crema Coffee Company, as well as witty coffee mugs, coffee-scented candles and edible (vegan) heart-shaped sugars to sweeten up any cup o’ joe. The shop is set up for gift giving, too. Customers can choose items to add to a basket or give Vickie a budget to work with—she’ll fill up a basket for you.

HOT SPOT (CONTINUED)
INSPIRATION AND INNOVATION To fill the store with such delectable treats, Vickie draws inspiration from both near and far. For a lot of the healthier provisions, Vickie took into account the needs of the exercise enthusiasts coming in off the trail. “Bikers were stopping and filling me in on the stuff they wanted,” Vickie says. “They liked jerky, energy mixes, honey sticks and drinks, but they were also saying they liked protein balls and muffins, too. We are hitting multiple levels here, making sure we get everyone covered.” In addition to listening to customer input, she also finds inspiration in other less-obvious places. “Sometimes it can be the strangest thing, like watching a TV show or things I did as a kid. My grandma used to bake a lot, which gives me inspiration, too,” Vickie explains. “I also spend a lot of time online looking for new suppliers and vendors … once a year we go to a food show to see what the trends are. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don’t. The Camp cocktail mixes, I loved the way they looked … and we’re going through them like crazy!” And yet one thing no passerby can resist is the smell of freshpopped popcorn. To lure in even more customers, the Larcombs are planning on installing a large, five-foot window right at the front of the store. While the Larcombs won’t be able to sell out of the window, you will be able to smell out of it—and that’s the whole point. “People can smell the cooking and want to come in and see what’s going on back here,” Vickie explains. “The window will never be a service window … it will be a strictly view-and-smell window.” Although Vickie admits they landed in Loveland somewhat on accident, the more they visited their future location and its surroundings, the more they fell in love with it. “We loved the vibe and the traffic, and the people were friendly,” Vickie says. “I love the idea that when you park here, you’re going to walk, and you’re not walking past an empty building. Loveland is a place to go and have fun.” Throughout the mandatory stay-at-home order, Vickie and her family have worked hard to remain accessible via phone-in orders and curbside service—offering Facebook menus (and tantalizing teasers) for snacks, treats, Easter baskets and Mother’s Day gifts. S A C U E & SIX LEADERS, FIVE INTENTIONS AND A WEALTH OF HEALING, HELP AND HOPE
A GLAMOROUS COVER PHOTO—THINK VANITY FAIR WITH ANNIE LEIBOVITZ BEHIND THE LENS. Each woman in dramatic monochrome, whether evening gown or jeans and tee. Each woman owning her own powerful stance and style, yet strategically placed to meld perfectly, artfully, into one striking group. That was our vision, that was our plan. Sometimes plans change. Women whose businesses help, support or inspire other women— that was the original focus of this feature article. We had our lineup of influential women, interviews had begun and all that was left was scheduling the photoshoot (that cover was set to be fierce). But as the month of March progressed and we were encouraged to keep our distance due to COVID-19, it became increasingly clear that a group photoshoot was not going to happen. Should not, in fact. So, we did what we all had to do during this time—we adapted, we changed, we worked together. We modified each woman’s profile story so she could have space to address the community about the current crisis. Messages of support, hope and love poured in, as did the photos. Each woman emailed her headshot, photos of her business, photos with coworkers, photos with family. No one complained about the change of course or extra work—on the contrary, this new editorial direction ignited a passion in each … and what we ended up with was an article that was both real and relevant for the time. To complete this article, these ladies did what they do best— they helped. They made it happen, no matter the hurdles. We didn’t just write an article about women helping other women— we lived it, all of us, through this entire process. So to each of these lovely leading ladies: thank you … for being adaptable, but perhaps most important—for being inspirational. - Emily Barlow

HOW WE HELP: COMMITTED TO YOUR SUCCESS, WHATEVER IT LOOKS LIKE In early 2017, Molly and JoAnne created MoJo Advantage to fill a unique niche for moms—helping them understand what their next steps should be, and how to pursue them. Their mission? To help stay-at-home moms return to the workforce. It’s a process that’s devoted to giving women not only opportunities for income, but the ability to sharpen skills, as well. “Our clients tell us that Mojo gives them the awareness and confidence to pursue what they want to do,” JoAnne says. Molly agrees. “The assessment, our process— it’s all to enable clients to articulate what their skills are, to find what they’re looking for.” MOLLY AND JOANNE’S MESSAGE: “TAKE IT ONE DAY AT A TIME.” “There’s so much uncertainty right now in people’s lives, especially if they have schoolaged kids unexpectedly at home, that we’re

HOW WE HELP: INVESTMENT, INTENTION, CONNECTION Family preservation—that’s the heart of Tried & True Parenting (TTP). Celebrating its fifth anniversary, this nonprofit equips struggling parents with easy-to-learn and easy-toapply techniques to help during a time of need and overcome family obstacles. TTP tethers themselves to a family and reminds parents that they aren’t alone. Whether a family is struggling with their own child’s behavior issues or they are welcoming a foster or adoptive child into their home, TTP’s message is one of hope. Jen, TTP’s executive director, says, “Parenting is as precarious as it is beautiful. For any parent, we seek to provide a way forward where there is often not a road map—supporting them in becoming the best versions of themselves to build sturdy, connected relationships with their children.” JEN’S MESSAGE: “GIVE CARE, RECEIVE CARE.” “We need each other now more than ever. We are literally writing history in this exact day and time … we are hunkered down with our families in a season where we can easily be gripped by fear and anxiety. Let’s be neighborly. Let’s make sure we take care of ourselves and we take care of each other. It takes a village, after all. Let’s be what we want to see for each other’s families.” TriedAndTrueParenting.com 26

ANNETTE FRIESNER SAW PILATES
HOW WE HELP: CONNECTING THE COMMUNITY Annette named SAW Pilates as a nod to her children’s names; it also references “social and wellness.” “We love to host events for our clients and the community,” she says. “There are real friendships here, and the mental and emotional work is there, too.” Indeed, community ties are strong with SAW Pilates. “We helped with a Backpack Give Back last fall—over $2,500 worth of school supplies were donated from our studio for underserved kids right here in Loveland.” Plus, coming soon—reopening after the move to SAW Pilates’ new location. ANNETTE’S MESSAGE: “WE WILL GET THROUGH THIS.” “Our world is so used to going nonstop—we can use this time of slowing down and reflecting to heal, connect and grow together. I have strong faith we will come out stronger after this crisis passes. I can’t wait to see our community at SAW face-to-face and celebrate all we have overcome … together!” SAWPilates.com

A N N E TA B O R TABOR & COMPANY HOW WE HELP: EXPRESSION THROUGH ART For Anne, co-owner/operator of Tabor & Company, painting a home is much more than primer and brushes. “I love color, design—seeing the joy in a client’s face when I’ve transformed their home,” she says with more than a dash of enthusiasm. “For the past 13 years, I’ve been blessed to help families create a space they want to come home to. Painting is about new beginnings and creating the next chapter of your family’s story. I love being a part of that.” ANNE’S MESSAGE: “WE WILL EMERGE STRONGER.” “Surround yourself with colors that speak to you. Eat food that is bursting with color. Use this time to reorganize your home, create a list of projects to update your space, and maintain a sense of humor. This too shall pass.” Tabor.company 28

COURTNEY KRAEMER PINK RIBBON GIRLS
HOW WE HELP: NO ONE TRAVELS THIS ROAD ALONE This year, the American Cancer Society estimates 1.8 million new cancer cases will be diagnosed in the United States. For the Pink Ribbon Girls (PRG), that means there’s work to do. This nonprofit provides free, direct services for anyone battling breast and gynecological cancers—at any age and any cancer stage. Families can receive meals delivered directly to their homes, rides to and from treatment, house cleaning and peer support. Last year in Cincinnati alone, PRG provided 26,622 meals, 1,200 rides and 952 house cleanings. “When someone hears a cancer diagnosis, not only are they fearful and uncertain, they can be worried financially,” Courtney, PRG’s community engagement coordinator, says. “PRG is here to help lighten their burden—to be part of the journey by making daily tasks easier while cancer patients focus on fighting the biggest battle of their lives.” COURTNEY’S MESSAGE: “CANCER DOESN’T STOP; WE DON’T STOP.” “PRG will not stop providing critical services to our cancer patients at their time of greatest need— unfortunately, all spring fundraising events have been cancelled or postponed, and we don’t have as many funds coming in. We would be honored to have any support from the community during this time. We’re humbled to serve the entire family, to lift the burden on the mom—who in most cases is the caretaker of the family.” PinkRibbonGirls.org

PACK YOUR SMALL SPACES WITH A BIG PUNCH BY STARTING YOUR OWN CONTAINER GARDEN
IT MAY BE THAT YOU DON’T HAVE MUCH SPACE TO WORK WITH; MAYBE YOU ARE ALWAYS ON-THE-MOVE; OR, MAYBE YOU JUST SIMPLY COLOR TO YOUR SPACE. It doesn’t matter what your reason may be. Container gardening—the practice of growing plants exclusively in containers rather than in the ground—is a great way to pack some punch into a small (or portable!) space. With container gardening, there are almost endless possibilities. Whether you’re looking to grow decorative plants or edible ones, there’s likely an option for you— and it doesn’t have to be limited to simply growing herbs

on your windowsill. There are several factors to keep in mind when you first start your container garden, the first of which being to decide whether you’re going to keep it indoors or out. Different plants grow best in different environments, so be sure to choose species that will thrive where you’ve decided to put them—making sure they are receiving the proper amount of sunlight and moisture.

Here are a few other things to be aware of when you get started: CONTAINER SIZES: Large containers may be easier to grow plants in than small since
they have more space for large root systems and larger amounts of soil retain more moisture. + CONTAINER DRAINAGE: Your container must have a drainage system—even if it’s just a few holes you drill in it yourself. For plants that need to be watered more frequently, consider self-watering containers. + CONTAINER MATERIALS: The fun thing about container gardens is that you don’t have to limit yourself. Get creative with the containers you use (while keeping the above information in mind)! We love repurposing vintage items into unique containers.

The containers you choose are going to largely depend on the type of plant you’re trying to grow and the best space and environment for it to grow in. If you’re looking for the bare basics, there are a lot of different vegetables — like cabbage, celery, green onions, lettuce and leeks — that can grow in water alone. If you’re looking for a way to use that vintage glassware or pitchers hiding in your cupboards, here’s your chance! If you don’t have a lot of counter space (or space in general for that matter), herbs don’t need a ton of room to grow. Consider turning several small planters into a win-

HILARITY, NORMALITY & NOSTALGIA (WITH A CHERRY ON TOP)
S Y N D I C AT I O N I N S P I R AT I O N FOR TERESA MORGAN, IT’S ALL ABOUT RERUNS. “I live in a black-andwhite world,” she laughs. “I’m a MeTV fan.” A happy nod to those channels dedicated to TV’s classics—Hitchcock to Hillbillies, Mork to Maude, it’s all binge-worthy gold. Teresa, of course, has her faves, something we uncovered by accident. Originally an ask for her top movies featuring strong, iconic women, the fact that she’s hooked on Antenna TV was a perfectly sweet twist—she offered us three shows featuring, well … strong, iconic women. “I can go home, turn it on, just watch—and forget about the day.” And isn’t that something we all need more of these days? The Loveland Dairy Whip has been in Teresa’s family on and off since the early ’70s. In 2001, she and her husband took over sole ownership— there’s a poster inside featuring that quintessential Lucy and Ethel chocolate factory scene, often ironically similar to LDW’s drive-through line. “We’re always laughing, ‘Speed it up! Speed it up!’” Teresa smiles about needing diversions that are nostalgic and normal— something her shows and LDW deliver in spades. “People are saying ‘thank you for being here, for being open.’ I can’t believe the outpouring—I thank them for their patience, kind words, all their support. I will tear up, because with everything going on right now, it just makes you really feel good.” TheLDW.com
