so grateful for him. He taught me to be an effective businesswoman and entrepreneur.” Before Covid, Dr. Khtari made her practice so welcoming, parents and extended family came to support their children and simply visit and hang out. The fun-loving Dr. Khatri is known for her sense of humor and for the elaborate photo shoots she stages where she and her staff all dress up in different themes, like pirates. “We’ve built a beautiful little community of families,” she says. “I love what I do, I feel like I was put on this earth to do it, and that it’s my calling.” Now following all Covid protocols and utilizing full PPE and air filtration systems, Janoff & Khatri accepts patients from age one. Dr. Khatri’s goals are to make every child feel safe and comfortable in the dentist’s chair, and to teach lifelong lessons about hygiene and tooth care. She and her staff spend many hours in local schools doing community outreach through fun and informative programs on dental hygiene. The practice also supports The Twig, a Venice nonprofit that supports children in foster care through providing new clothing at its store. “I love Venice and this community,” says Dr. Khatri. “In the beginning, Eddie and I were a bit nervous about what to expect because of Venice’s reputation as a quiet, retirement community. But after more than a decade here, we love Venice as a wonderful place to raise our children, to be a part of a real small town, and to feel supported in return. There is nowhere else we would rather work and live.” Anyone visiting Janoff & Khatri for the first time will immediately feel the warm, welcoming vibe. That comes directly from Dr. Khatri. “We strive to be fun, inviting, light and engaging,” says Dr. Khatri. “Our practice will take care of you as though you have always been one of our very own.” 18

Aside from watching anime, Ayden and Tony also like playing video games together, including Legend of Zelda titles. On his own, Ayden plays Minecraft and Yoshi’s Crafting World. “Ayden gets good grades and my fiancée Khia and I don’t really have to discipline him,” says Tony. “He’s a great kid. I just adore him.” “My dad’s way better at video games than me,” Ayden says and grins. “I like all the things he’s taught me and that he’s always fair to me.” Ayden and Tony are both fans of One Piece, an animated Japanese series by Eiichiro Oda that follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy and his crew of pirates—the Straw Hat Pirates.

Luffy and his crew search the world for the ultimate One Piece treasure. “Every episode is exciting,” Ayden says. Ayden and Tony enjoy gaming, especially playing any titles in the fabled Legend of Zelda series. “I really like Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time,” says Ayden. “My dad and I play and hang out together. He’s way better than me!” Ayden enjoys drawing, taking his inspiration from Japanese manga art. The style of art was developed in Japan in the 19th century, and the term ‘manga’ refers to comics and cartooning. Taken together, manga and anime are among the leading forms of drawn artwork in the world. REFLECTIONS IN GOLD 1975 Tamiami Trail S, Venice 941.493.1911, ReflectionsInGold.com 24

It serves as a community resource and highlights the talents of our individuals artists, business people, and everyone who works so hard to make Venice the safe and happy community that it is.” With a degree in Anthropology, Virginia has lived an adventurous life that included many trips to study Aztec and Mayan temples and ruins in Mexico and Central America. “I used to go every year for two months, rent a car, and drive through jungles to ruins even when there were no paved roads in those parts of Guatemala and Belize,” Virginia says. “I’d always end my trips in Acapulco, which was such a wonderful place to be.” Virginia shares the Venice Lifestyle Magazine philosophy of always working toward the betterment of our community. Her past endeavors include being the top model for the iconic Joseph Ribkoff fashion label, as well as starting glossy magazines up and down the east coast of Florida, where she has lived in main cities from Fort Lauderdale to Vero Beach. “I drove through Venice years ago and immediately fell in love,” Virginia explains. “It was Christmastime and the city was done up in lights. Venice has such charm, such uniqueness. It’s truly a little paradise and I love the Historic Downtown.” More recently, Virginia was the directory Associate Publisher for 15 HOAs in Sarasota County.

M AT E R I A L S

PIÑLLAMA

+ Cardboard + White crepe paper + Construction paper + Glue + Scissors + Beads, yarn, pom poms, etc.

DIRECTIONS 1. Take your cardboard and cut two pieces into the shape of a llama (we found a stencil online). Then, cut strips of cardboard the depth you want your llama to be. You’ll connect these to either side of the llama cutouts to enclose your piñata. 2. Glue your strip of cardboard all along the edge of one side of your llama, then glue to the other side. (Be sure to leave a hole you can close up later so you can fill it with your favorite candy!) 3. Starting at the neck, cover the front, back and sides of your llama with white crepe paper, cutting a slit every half inch or so to create the traditional piñata look. 4. Cover all remaining sides the neck and head with white construction paper, cut to fit your design. 5. Using construction paper, beads, pom poms, tassels, buttons, etc., add some flair to the rest of your llama! Bonus points for incorporating different shapes and textures into your final product.

FINANCIAL BUZZ

saving and investing with your kids IT’S NEVER TO EARLY TO START

ARTICLE KATE HYLAND MERCER PHOTOGRAPHY PRION PHOTOGRAPHY

YOUR KIDS ARE WATCHING YOU. You’ve heard the saying ‘more is caught than taught’, right? Well, that’s true of saving and investing, too. It’s never too early to start modeling good money habits, teaching kids about money, and getting them involved. By learning early, children can grow up more financially prepared and savvy. If children know how to save and invest like ‘the rich do,’ by the time they are 21 they will have

TIP 1. BUILD THE BASE The beginning of saving for kids starts with the use of the piggy bank as early as age three. Have some fun: get four piggy banks and teach your kids the four areas they need to learn: Saving, spending, donating, and investing. It’s an easy way to begin a child’s financial journey and allows them to make decisions about how their money is being used. It also allows you a chance to help them see and discuss some of the unintended consequences of putting all their money in just ‘one basket’.

each child with an imaginary $10,000 to spend in the stock market. Use a spreadsheet to track the name of the stock, its share price, date, and number of shares purchased with an investment total at the bottom. Then periodically enter a new date and share price column to track whether the investments are growing or shrinking. Playing like this creates a space for you and your child to discuss the rules of investing with no risk. Making it a game now will help them associate positive feelings and ideas around money, positioning them for success later.
