What Time is It? Summertime! IT IS HEATING UP IN BRIDGEWATER! Time for all of your favorite summer foods and fashion. Goodbye, clunky layers; hello, breezy dresses and floppy hats. And hello, swim-up bars and oceanfront cocktails—are we right? Even if that pool is really an inflatable kiddie pool in your backyard and your cocktail is the last dash of vodka you have left mixed with a juice box, it is still fun to imagine exotic locations and relax in the sun. If you’re parents of school-aged children like us, then you may be worried that all

Educational advocate and educator, Bonnie Kole, M.Ed., offers our readers fun tips to help keep kids learning this summer. Our community's youngest learners have also been missing school. There’s nothing quite like a cool, refreshing dive in the pool. This month we interview Brian Greene, owner of Streamline Aquatics Club, who gives us some insight into what a day in the life of a competitive swimmer looks like. This summer is certainly different from any other one we have previously experienced. After many months of being cooped up at home, our family definitely has a little bit of cabin fever—and by a little, we mean a lot. The sun is shining and we are taking advantage of everything that the great outdoors has to offer.

PROVIDING SHELTER DURING A STORM

NJHSA 2019 Trainer of the Year

THE WORD ESSENTIAL HAS TAKEN ON A NEW MEANING THIS YEAR. While everyone was grateful for the healthcare workers on the frontline and the police officers keeping our streets safe, it seemed that no one thought about the fact that many of these workers are also parents. By mid-March, with schools and daycare centers closing due to the spread of COVID-19, these parents were left wondering who would care for their children while they were obligated to continue working outside of their homes?

Childcare centers anxiously awaited to find out if and how they would be allowed to operate. Tirusha Dave, owner and founder of Ellie’s Academy in Somerville, consulted her staff and quickly learned that they were all in. They collectively decided that they would do anything in their power to stay open and serve these essential employees. Someone needed to step up and care for these children. By the end of March, the enrollment at Ellie’s Academy was down to less than ten students and there was fear of what

the coming weeks would bring. The center finally received verification that they were approved by the state to stay open, and with that, the phones started ringing. Essential parents needed quality care for their children and immediately started enrolling them at the school. With a renewed sense of optimism, Tirusha created motivational videos about the essential parents, highlighting their dedication to the communities. She also formed partnerships with local eating establishments who thanked the parents with donated meals: The Good Donut Shop, Joe’s Meat Market, Corner Cafe & Grill, Stage House Tavern, Domino’s Pizza, Turf Surf and Earth, Indian Hut Somerset, Desi Mojo Foods, Moghul Express, Campozino Restaurant, Bites and Bowls, Costco, On The Border Mexican Grill & Cantina, and Kuay Tiew Noodles & More. She explains, “Ellie’s is our favorite place to be outside of the home! During a time of crisis and paranoia for many people, they made the center so safe for the children. As parents, we had no worries dropping our children off in the morning before we headed to our essential jobs. Ellie’s Academy is so much more than a daycare. They are our home away from home.” Even without a pandemic, finding the right daycare remains a huge challenge for many parents. From its earliest roots, Tirusha was dedicated to bringing high-quality, early childhood education to the families of Bridgewater and the surrounding towns. At Ellie’s Academy, the entire team works together to pave the foundation for their future education. They enroll babies as young as six weeks of age up to five years old. “The time a child spends at Ellie’s Academy is critical to their development,” says Tirusha. “Children learn important social and emotional skills through a partnership that is formed between the child, parents and teachers.” Tirusha, who has been working in the field of early education for over a decade, believes that when the home/school partnership is fostered effectively, it lays the groundwork for the child’s educational aptitude for many years to come. “The first five years of a child’s life are extremely important. During this time, the foundation is built for their future cognitive and social development,” says Tirusha. Throughout these difficult times, Tirusha continues to come into work with a sense of optimism and love of what she does. Tirusha gushes, “The smiles and the hugs are the best part of the day. These children mean everything to me, and they are the future of our world. We have such a small window to mold their minds and teach them the skills which will pave their futures.” elliesacademy.com 14

TO BRIAN GREENE, THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO ARE INTO LAND SPORTS AND THOSE WHO ARE WATER CREATURES. Brian, who has been swimming since childhood is decidedly in the latter category, and for over 30 years has channeled this passion into providing aquatic instruction to all levels of swimmers—from learn-to-swim programs to developing YMCA National Champions. In 2014, Brian branched out on his own, founding Streamline Aquatics Club (STAC), which he co-owns with his wife, Clare Zeszotarski. With the support of 12 coaches, STAC offers private 24

fit swimming into their schedule, STAC offers a number of opportunities to swim during the week: Monday to Friday nights, Saturday morning and Sunday night. Swimmers also can opt to practice on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday mornings, and STAC will open lanes at other times for those whose schedules are trickier. Some swimmers will only practice four days a week, others more. It depends on the swimmer, and at STAC, school always comes first! For example, if a student has a lot of homework or has to study for a test, they can leave practice early. Swimmers are encouraged to participate in land exercises—walking, biking or jogging—and those older than 12 often consider other additional workouts. During the pandemic, Brian has kept in touch with the swimmers to help them stay in shape for the season, raising their spirits through TikTok exercise videos he films, links to fitness apps and exercise games played using dice, coins or cards. For example, in Brian’s dice game, the swimmers do a certain repetition of exercises—like crunches, planks, lunges or squats—that correspond to the numbers they roll. Many of the students run competitively as well, which Brian encourages, along with other daily calisthenics, such as jumping jacks or push-ups. The coaches instill the importance of nutrition and flexibility early. “Swimmers always look in shape,” Brian says. “That’s because they’re burning what they are eating.” During the day, the student-athletes are encouraged to sip water and nibble on healthy foods that can break down easily like fruit or a power bar so they are always hydrated and fueled. Before each practice, swimmers stretch and perform exercises. Meet days are long, lasting five hours or more. On those mornings, swimmers eat a healthy breakfast like eggs or oatmeal, then snack on fruit and vegetables during the meet. Swimmers who are fast enough to return for finals will work in a nap and lunch or early dinner before their next meet. Brian explains, “What they put in their body needs to be positive.” He finds that swimmers’ acute sense of time management allows them to excel at school and in the pool. “Swimming provides additional benefits like camaraderie, stress management and confidence, which will help student-athletes have the confidence to succeed in other areas of their life,” Brian says. swimatstac.com 26

PARTING THOUGHTS

The Beach Can be a Classroom THIS MARCH OUR STUDENTS WERE THRUST INTO VIRTUAL CLASSROOMS—A CHANGE THAT PROVED TO BE MORE THAN CHALLENGING FOR FAMILIES. After months of haphazard homeschooling, while simultaneously working from home and managing the needs of the household, many parents are now concerned that their kids are not on track for next school year. Bonnie Kole, M.Ed., a local educational advocate and reading specialist, offers tips to keep kids learning this summer.

1.

DON’T BE SO HARD ON YOURSELF! Don’t feel the need to do something educational throughout the summer. The most practical way to address the summer/pandemic slide is to view all activities as a chance to learn something. Ask your children to learn one new fact a day and share it with you. A trip to the shore or a trip to the store will present opportunities to see math, literacy,

2. 3.

science and social studies in real life. HAVE A SCHEDULE! Even a relaxed summer schedule is essential. Reading, for example, should be part of an everyday routine; however, if your child avoids reading, the summer is a good time to find out why? Work with your children to create a schedule that reflects what they want to learn. REACH OUT TO AN EDUCATOR! If you have concerns about your child’s academic readiness for the next school year, contact an educator for suggestions or academic help.

Bonnie works with families on a variety of educational matters, including IEP issues, out of district placements, bullying, reading/writing difficulties and social-emotional challenges impacting academic growth. bonnierkole.com
