COLLEGE CAREER ACADEMY IN SOUTH FULTON CRYSTALLIZING STUDENTS’ REAL-WORLD PROFESSIONAL SUCCESS
FULTON SCHOOL’S COLLEGE CAREER ACADEMY READIES STUDENTS IN SOUTH FULTON TO BE DYNAMIC SUCCESSES IN THE WORKFORCE. Located in Union City, the curriculum covers many trades for 9th through 12th graders, including Culinary Arts, AV/Film, Construction and Aviation. Teaching as a Profession, Animation and dual enrollment at Atlanta Technical College mark new additions, sparked by growth. Youth from neighboring high schools— Banneker, Langston Hughes, Tri-Cities, Westlake and Creekside—rotate and travel by bus to the campus for half-day instruction on a trimester schedule. The academy has more than doubled in attendance since it first opened in Fall 2016 with a little less than 200 students. This term’s enrollment is just under 600 students! It’s a popular option for the state’s youth. Coordinator Lorissa Edwards says the lab-intensive educational experience stimulates the students, keeping them engaged, solidifying retention, and attracting even more to the vocational program. “It’s not a sit-and-get-situation,” she says. “They’re actually flying drones, [stepping into] flight and helicopter simulators, and using the weather station. And the culinary arts students are cooking, smelling and touching.” She adds that whereas 20 years ago vocational education was an either/or model, today, it’s moved to a both/and model. The high schools focus on preparing youth for college, and the Career Academy, as the name suggests, graduates them, armed with certifications, to an actual feasible career. Edwards loves that in her role she attends to the needs of a diverse array of students districtwide, making her a more well-rounded leader. She also handles community partnerships, which really make the institution thrive. They offer donations, such as aprons or mentorship through providing robust and rigorous internships. Career Academy also welcomes additional partners. “I don’t think we could ever exhaust the different experiences that kids could have through those pathways,” Edwards says, noting that her core purpose is to solicit opportunities for students and to provide students with exposure to career skills through them. She wants students to be viable citizens who can seamlessly be professional and collaborative, exemplify great character leadership, innovative with ideas, and feel confident as they step into the workplace. 12

Interestingly, fashion and health have been closely aligned for quite some time. There are many fashion trends that may have a direct impact on your health. As an interventional pain physician, I see many patients who struggle to stay “en-vogue” at the detriment to their health. For instance, high heels are a common culprit for lower back pain though they can really make an outfit pop. The heels serve to create a forward posture that places more pressure on the spine and increases your risk for sciatica. It can also cause muscles spasms in the calves and feet. Skinny jeans on not so skinny people can create uncomfortable waistbands that result in painful compression of the stomach resulting in acid reflux. Additionally, tight abrasive garments can retain moisture from sweat and result in yeast infections and skin abrasions. However, as summer comes to an end and Fall is upon us in South Fulton there are many things you can do to be trendy and also healthy. •Do: Reduce the load in your purses and bags. That “Neverfull” bag was not meant to be filled with 30lbs of items. Carrying around heavy purses leads to neck, shoulder and back pains. •Don’t: Wear the same pair of socks for more than one day. Invest in a variety of colorful socks that can spice up your outfit and change them daily. Many of my patients admit that it is sometimes easier to leave their worn sock in their shoes after a long day at work. They then recycle those socks the following day. The heat in Atlanta causes our feet to sweat and the socks becomes a breeding ground for bacteria that settle in between your toes. •Do: Exercise to make those outfits fit you better. Focus on core strength and stabilization- your abdominal muscles help to counterbalance the forces on your spine. A weak core with abdominal obesity is a main contributor to chronic back pain. Pearl: Every 1lb of belly fat equals 3lbs of weight on your back because the mechanics of your spine. So if you are 20lbs overweight in your abdomen, your back experiences 60lbs of increased load. That is equivalent to walking around with a backpack full of cement mix!
