There’s No Place Like Home “HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS.” It’s a common phrase meaning that our homes are a central place in our lives—where we rest our heads, nourish our bodies and make fond memories with loved ones. It’s the epicenter of our world, where we start and end each day, and where we keep our most prized possessions. In this issue, Ilya Perlovsky—Insurance Guy Without a Tie—offers insurance advice to make sure one of the biggest assets in your life—your home—is properly protected.

The best thing about your home is that it’s the only one exactly like it. Sure, your neighbors’ houses may have a similar style or paint color, but the way you decorate each room and the memories you create in them are uniquely yours. We talk to Danielle and Dave Jenkins and find out how Five Star Home Remodeling turned their house from outdated and drab to modern and fab. For our senior loved ones, assisted living might be the best place for them to call home. Stephanie Maxwell, a resident of Avalon Assisted Living at Bridgewater, tells our readers why she can’t think of anywhere else she'd rather spend her time.

In March we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Ellery’s Pub & Grill shares with us their dynamo corned beef and cabbage recipe. Don’t consider yourself much of a chef? Trust us, cooking doesn’t get any simpler than this slow cooker recipe. Bridgewater is where we have chosen to raise our three daughters. It is definitely where our heart is. Thank you for letting us share a little bit of it with you each month. Happy March, Bridgewater!

FOR ANYONE WHO HAS LIVED THROUGH A HOME RENOVATION, YOU KNOW THAT REMODELING A HOUSE CAN CERTAINLY BE CHALLENGING. From unreliable contractors to delays and unexpected expenses, there’s no shortage of problems that can creep up. That’s why Danielle and Dave Jenkins vetted several home remodelers before agreeing that Five Star Home Remodeling was the obvious choice for their major renovation. Larry Hopkins and his team transformed their outdated dwelling into the home of their dreams. The Jenkins bought a house that met their needs in a great location; however, it needed a little bit of their personal touch to truly make it their own—and by

Dave confesses, “The idea of opening up our house was daunting, but the way Larry managed the project and communicated with us helped to put everybody at ease.” “I tell my crew, ‘Treat the house like it belongs to your grandmother,’” says Larry. Far too often we hear of remodeling nightmares that start with the best plans and intentions, but inevitably drag on for months. Dave laughs and tells the story of a conversation with his neighbor, “Five Star was in and out of our home in 6 weeks. Our neighbors were also doing a renovation at the same time as us and it was taking longer than they had planned. When they stopped seeing trucks in front of our house they asked me, ‘Did your contractor quit?’ I answered, ‘No Larry’s gone because he already finished the job.’” The end result is a stunning remodel that truly deserves a five-star rating. An escape room is a unique challenge in which a team of players cooperatively discover clues, solve puzzles, and complete tasks in one or more rooms in order to progress and accomplish a specific goal in a limited amount of time. The concept is pretty straightforward. A group of friends or family, work colleagues, or even strangers are brought to a room and must collaboratively work together through a series of challenges and puzzles to essentially escape. Growing in popularity over the past few years, there are now 5,000 escape rooms worldwide with over 2,300 right here in the United States! Last summer, Bridgewater residents Kimberly

and

Patrick

Scaglione, opened Ultimate Xscape Rooms in Downtown Somerville. Part of what sets Ultimate Xscape Rooms apart from the competition is that they are not a franchise. “Our rooms are one-of-a-kind, and our approach is to provide a unique experience people cannot get elsewhere,” says Kimberly. People often ask the couple how they came up with the idea to open an escape room. In the summer of 2016, they were on vacation with their daughter. Together with another family, they decided to visit an escape room. They had never seen anything like it before and were surprised by how much fun they all had.

Kimberly explains, “I really enjoyed the cerebral challenge.”

RENOVATE & REFINE

Don’t be afraid to do something different, and don’t take things too seriously. If the piece you’re working with doesn’t have any real value, you have so many options to liven it up, including paint, finish and hardware.

Spread the vintage love. Use antiques strategically and as accent pieces to keep your overall aesthetic from coming off as too dated.

Make your piece multi-purpose by turning the lid into a game table or by storing your cocktail accessories inside for an easy-access mini bar!

Repurpose old tins, mugs, teacups or storage containers into succulent gardens. Because succulents have shallow root systems, they can survive (and thrive!) in smaller spaces.

OUT WITH THE

Make it art. Don’t be afraid to display unique pieces as wall art. Consider creating a gallery wall that mixes vintage photographs, prints, mirrors and china.

YO U R H O M E, P R OT ECT E D TIPS FROM INSURANCE GUY WITHOUT A TIE

Here are a few key items you should note to make sure the roof over your family’s head stays there: 1. Your policy will only pay the amount necessary to restore your home to its original condition, so insuring your $700,000 home for $1.5 million is a waste of your hard-earned cash. Insurers calculate replacement costs based on the composition of your home, and will usually offer up to 50% additional dwelling coverage in case their calculations are off. 2. Increasing your deductibles can bring your rate down, but if you have a claim, then you’ll have to pay your deductible before your policy covers any losses. If it’s too high, then you could pay more on a claim than you saved on your premium. 3. Speaking of deductibles, some carriers have a separate one for hurricanes, which can be as high as 5% of your dwelling coverage. That said, a hurricane deductible only applies to damage caused during the period that 74-mile-per-hour sustained BUYING A HOME IS A CORNERSTONE OF THE AMERICAN DREAM. It’s a place to build your white picket fence and play catch in the yard with your 1.5 kids. While it’s important to protect one of the biggest investments of your life, figuring out homeowner’s insurance can be as easy as doing a 20,000-piece jigsaw puzzle, upside-down while

winds are recorded somewhere in the state, and for 12 hours before and after. 4. Finally, homeowner’s policies do not cover flood damage. If your home is in a high-risk flood zone, you will need to get a separate flood policy.
