“You get to know their hearts, you get to know their stories and their goals— that’s the best part,” trainer Holly said. “They get stronger inside and out,” Maggie chimed in. Not only does the gym help women heal from the past, but there’s also a preventative component. Self-defense moves are a crucial part of the workout in order to prepare women if a real life attack ever does occur. The man who gets the brunt of this training is a life-sized dummy affectionately named Bob. For the final two minutes of the workout, women get to fight Bob using any and all of their favorite moves.

“You create muscle memory. In a real life trauma situation, normally we panic,” Maggie said. “But if you’ve been practicing self defense, the motion kicks in before your brain has the chance to tell you to freeze.” The gym provides another kind of safety, too. The kickboxing circuit is arguably the ideal workout for the COVID conscious woman. With only one person per station at a time, 6-feet of social distancing is a guarantee. Boxing gloves are worn at all times, and the trainers wear masks and sanitize each station after use. RENOVATE & REFINE

REFINE + RENOVATE ALWYN HOMES HELPING HOMEOWNERS DREAMS COME TRUE

ARTICLE HANNAH ECHOLS PHOTOGRAPHY JOSHUA HICKS

RICK AND CHERYL MAUTZ MOVED FROM PARADISE, CALIFORNIA, WITH ONE GOAL IN MIND— TO BE NEAR THEIR FAMILY. Their son, Jeff Mautz, and his wife, Jenna, bought 7 acres on Oak Hills Drive in Castle Pines back in 2006. Last year, the family decided that it was time to renovate the space and be together. After scouring the internet for their perfect builder, they settled on Craig Austin of Alwyn Homes. Collaborating with Michael Perez, the architect on the project with Craig. The homeowners and team landed on a contemporary design. "The contemporary design was very appealing to me in that it was an architectural departure from many high-end custom homes I've built in the past 35 years, that was exciting to me." Craig stated. Craig has remodeled and built over 150 million dollars in custom home values and has an affinity for exploring different architectural designs for luxury properties. He doesn’t have any employees, which allows 16

for an efficient and streamlined communication process. That, and he only takes on one project a year. “We knew he would give us all of his professional attention,” Rick said. “From the first interview, we were very comfortable with Craig. He was very attentive to our ideas and went through each step of the project before he started.” That project includes a contemporary style 4 bedroom, 4 bath main house for Jeff, Jenna, and their two daughters, Este and Ciela, and a 2 bedroom, 2 bath guest house for Cheryl and Rick. Craig had to get creative with homeowner’s association guidelines that prohibited any secondary structure— like a guesthouse— from being built on the same property. Much like a secret passageway, Craig constructed an 8 foot wide, 10 foot tall tunnel underneath the sidewalk that connects the guesthouse basement to the lower level of the main house. The Mautz’ property has an impeccable outlook of an expansive valley and the distant Rockies. To best capitalize on this invaluable view, Craig aimed to bring the outside, in. The house is complete with modern fenestration elements that allow for an abundance of windows and natural light.

RENOVATE & REFINE (CONTINUED) Working with four people and two different contracts presented it’s challenges, but that’s one of the main reasons Craig was drawn to the project. The multitude of “chefs in the kitchen,” as Craig says, made the project more fun and unique. That, and he built quite the friendship with Grandpa Rick. “Rick was there everyday, very hands-on and involved. He was my shadow,” Craig said. “We always looked forward to seeing each other and catching up every day.” Building someone’s home is an intimate process. From client’s to contractors, Craig enjoys that the personal aspect of his profession allows him to creating lasting relationships. He has built great friendships with his subcontractors, some of which are in their second generation. Over his 32 years of working in the industry, Craig has built a career, homes, friendships, and a family. He traces his “why” all the way back to a handful of bent nails and a box fort. Craig grew up alongside an alfalfa field in the outskirts of a South Dakota town. Around the age of 11, he was mesmerized by an up-close process where before he had only seen finished products. A custom home was built right next to his, and he witnessed the entire journey— from excavation to final touch-ups. The builder allowed him on the job site and tasked him with the job of separating the good nails from the bad. His reward at the end of it all was enough scrap material for Craig and his father to build a fort in the backyard. “I had this vision in my mind of building this little box fort while this builder builds this huge custom home right before my eyes,” Craig said. “I realized right then and there that this is my life, this is what I want to do.” Throughout his 32 years of working in the industry, Craig has built a career, homes, friendships, and, his proudest accomplishment, a family. Alwyn Homes is actually named after Craig’s two kids, Alexander and Lydia Wynne. At one time, he ran two companies, Alexander Homes and Wynne Homes. He has since consolidated both businesses into one overhead name. Family is the reason that the Mautz’ moved and the reason that Craig has cut down to a project a year. “Now I have time to spend with my grandkids. Work is not my end all be all,” Craig said. “You go through shifts of how you prioritize your time, and family becomes more and more important.” If you are looking for a builder to help create a custom space for you and your family, contact Craig Austin at craig@alwynhomesinc.com.

Truckin' HOW A RESTAURANT ON WHEELS KEEPS PEOPLE COMING BACK

THE FIRST THING YOU NOTICE IS THE LINE OF PEOPLE. The second thing (if you’re lucky enough) is the tempting smell of fried food. We're talking about On The Hook, a food truck specializing in fish and chips. Listen, we know what you’re thinking, we aren’t on the coast, and we aren’t in the UK, but trust us, it’s just what you’ve been looking for. After that first, hot, salty, crispy bite, you'll be hooked (pardon the pun).

On The Hook was started by two friends and former University of Wyoming students, Hunter Andersen and Ocean Andrew, in 2016. Andrew’s father captains a commercial fishing boat in Alaska specializing in catching Alaskan grey cod. While still in school the two friends had the idea to bring hot and fresh fish and chips to people via a food truck.

NEW TO INVESTING? FOLLOW THESE GREAT SUGGESTIONS

ARTICLE ANDREW HENDEL - FINANCIAL ADVISOR FOR EDWARD JONES INVESTMENTS PHOTOGRAPHY TEERAYUTH OANWONG 28

Castle Rock Lifestyle | August 2020

IF YOU’RE FAIRLY NEW TO INVESTING, YOU MIGHT BE WONDERING WHAT SORT OF RULES YOU SHOULD FOLLOW OR MOVES YOU SHOULD MAKE. And while everyone’s situation is different, there are indeed guidelines that make sense for all investors. Here are some to consider:

LEARN THE BASICS. The investment world can seem confusing, but the more you know about the basic components, the more confident you’ll be when you begin to invest. For starters, you’ll want to be familiar with the essential types of investments: stocks, bonds, mutual funds, government securities and so on. And it’s also important to know that some investments are designed to provide growth – an increase in the investment’s value – while others provide income in the form of dividends or interest payments, and still others may offer growth and income. SET YOUR GOALS. You need to know why you’re investing – and that means you must clearly define your goals. Do you want to retire early? When you do

retire, what kind of lifestyle would you like to have? Are you planning on helping your children (or grandchildren) pay for college? Once you’ve established your goals, you can create the appropriate investment

strategy for achieving them, taking into account your time horizon and risk tolerance. INVEST REGULARLY. At first, you may only be able to afford to put in small amounts to your investment accounts, but even so, try to contribute regularly. You’ll get into the habit of investing and, later on, when you earn more money, you can ramp up your contributions. If you have a 401(k) or similar plan at work, the money can come out of your paycheck before you even see it. THINK LONG TERM. As you begin investing, it’s important to have the right attitude. Specifically, don’t look for the “hot” investments that will make you a “bundle” in a matter of weeks. Investing just doesn’t work that way – instead, it’s a decades-long process of carefully choosing, managing and adjusting a diversified portfolio that’s suitable for your individual needs. And by maintaining a long-term focus, you’ll be less susceptible to making ill-advised moves in response to short-term market events.

FINANCIAL BUZZ (CONTINUED)

DON’T GET SCARED OFF BY DOWNTURNS. If you invest for many years, it’s inevitable that you will experience sharp drops in the financial markets. But these declines are actually a normal part of investing. If you overreact to them by selling investments just because their price has dropped, you’ll not only be breaking a cardinal rule of investing – to buy low and sell high – but you’ll also be disrupting the type of cohesive, continuous investment strategy that’s necessary to help you achieve your goals. GET SOME HELP. You may find it easier to navigate the investment landscape if you get some help from a professional advisor – someone who understands your goals and family situation and who can make appropriate investment recommendations. A financial advisor can also suggest changes to your portfolio in response to changes in your life (new job, child graduating college, etc.) and in your goals, such as a new date for retirement.

FUN PAPER CRAFT ACTIVITY FOR YOU + YOUR KIDDO ARTICLE NICOLETTE MARTIN

M AT E R I A L S + Cardboard + White crepe paper + Construction paper + Glue + Scissors + Beads, yarn, pom poms, etc.

DIRECTIONS 1. Take your cardboard and cut two pieces into the shape of a llama (we found a stencil online). Then, cut strips of cardboard the depth you want your llama to be. You’ll connect these to either side of the llama cutouts to enclose your piñata. 2. Glue your strip of cardboard all along the edge of one side of your llama, then glue to the other side. (Be sure to leave a hole you can close up later so you can fill it with your favorite candy!)

PIÑLLAMA

3. Starting at the neck, cover the front, back and sides of your llama with white crepe paper, cutting a slit every half inch or so to create the traditional piñata look. 4. Cover all remaining sides of the neck and head with white construction paper, cut to fit your design. 5. Using construction paper, beads, pom poms, tassels, buttons, etc., add some flair to the rest of your llama! Bonus points for incorporating different shapes and textures into your final product.
