seems like never-ending treats, and you have a magical time of year. Read about old and new rituals this month, discover your inner baker and consider what new traditions you might want to start. Whether you are rushing or relaxing, this is the time of year to reflect, re-charge and remember the “why” behind what you do. A gentle reminder that there are some in our community who are less fortunate. Please consider making a gift this season to the Prop Shop and Prop Food Shelf to help families in need. It’s easily customizable to include your favorite munchies and just the right amount of saltiness. Just a warning though—this is highly addictive! You may want to make a double batch just in case. INGREDIENTS + 4 cups rice Chex cereal

+ 4 cups corn Chex cereal

Cheerios, candy corn, etc.)
+ 1 teaspoon salt INSTRUCTIONS Preheat oven to 250 F. Spray the largest baking dish you have with nonstick spray, then add the Chex, pretzels and peanuts. Put in oven to warm up while you make the caramel; this will make coating easier. Combine brown sugar, corn syrup, butter, and salt in a heavy bottom pan over medium-high heat. Stir gently until sugar is dissolved, then stop stirring and bring to a boil. Boil undisturbed for 8 minutes. Working quickly, take cereal mix out of the oven and have at the ready. Turn off the heat and add vanilla and baking soda, stir quickly to incorporate. Pour over cereal mixture and stir gently but quickly to coat. Careful— this is hot stuff. Return to the oven and bake for 45 minutes, stirring every 15 minutes. Line counter with foil and lightly spray with nonstick spray. When baking is complete, pour cereal mix onto the foil and carefully spread out on foil, separating any large clumps. When completely cool, break into bite-size pieces and put into a large bowl. Add desired mix-ins and toss to combine. Store in an airtight container. 14

NOW OPEN A FAMILY AFFAIR
FAT PANT’S GRAND OPENING IN A TIME WHEN YOU AREN’T SURE WHAT TO EXPECT FROM MOST RESTAURANTS, THERE’S COMFORT IN SOMETHING FAMILIAR. That’s exactly what the owners of New Fat Pants Brewing want you to feel like when you visit – comfortable - like you were in your own living room. As founders Elizabeth, Linda, and Don Anderson understand the pleasure of feeling at home. The Andersons are life-long Eden Prairie resident and wanted to create something they felt was missing in the community. “My goal was to create a fun space where it would be easy to meet friends. Someplace where you could come as you are, and maybe have a bite to eat or something to drink that you wouldn’t find anywhere else”, says Elizabeth. With Fat Pants, she and her partners have hit a home run. When the space just off Flying Cloud Drive and Prairie Center Drive became available, they jumped on it. There has been a lot of work over the past two years to bring their vision to reality, as the space has been completely transformed into the City’s first taproom Joined by childhood friends other family members and Elizabeth’s fiancé, Joshua Schmidt, the partners did much of the work themselves. Fat Pants believes in sustainability and re-cycled items such as the wood pallets that materials were delivered on. “Those pallets became some of our walls and part of a very cool looking bar”, says Josh. After almost six months of heavy renovation, the result is stunning. Building on the ‘living room’ theme, Elizabeth states,

“We wanted comfortable seating, so along with tables there are couches and comfy spots to relax. Our fireplace is another touch that makes you feel at home.” Custom seating can hold a large family or sports team after a game or take a seat at the community style seating if you feel like getting to know your neighbor.

10 MINUTE NO SWEAT WORKOUT OSTEOSTRONG PROVES IT’S NOT ALL ABOUT MUSCLES WHEN IT COMES TO HEALTH
24
Eden Prairie Lifestyle | December 2019
who should consider Osteostrong? 52 million Americans suffer from osteoporosis or low bone density. Osteostrong is for anyone – man or woman - looking to protect against bone loss (Osteoporosis) and improve overall health.
HAVING JUST ARRIVED FOR MY FIRST OSTEOSTRONG
SESSION,
I
WAS
READING TESTIMONIALS FROM A VIDEO ON THE TELEVISION SCREEN AND WAS IMPRESSED. “I was having pretty severe knee pain and inflammation. It was hard to walk the dog, go up stairs or dance at my son’s wedding. I had my first session July 12 and by my other son’s wedding in September, was able to dance the night away. I’ve noticed increased strength in lifting furniture and other activities. The Osteostrong program is amazing! – Dave” “Wow, this system must really work for people to make those kinds of statements”, I thought.
Inside the Osteostrong studio, the space was bright and clean and looked like an upscale gym. As a life-long exercise fan, I was curious about the process. Reading the list of benefits on the wall made me excited to start. Ryan Dayton, my trainer, guided me through my initial session. We started doing small warm-up movements on a vibration platform, designed to improve stability and balance. After a few minutes, Ryan took me to the Spectrum Robotic Equipment and explained how the machines provide Osteogenic Loading, which stimulates bone growth. The science made sense but I wanted to try the machines. CONTINUED >

After a short test, Ryan had me push at my max for about five seconds – and then we were done. On the outside I was smiling and nodding yes when Ryan asked whether it felt good but, inside, I was thinking, “That’s it?” “Where’s the sweat and pain?” The process repeated itself for the next few machines and the session was over. “People might feel relief immediately or they may not see any benefit for a few sessions”, Ryan cautioned, “Unlike lifting weights or working out, you won’t feel soreness or be fatigued, but you are still building bone density and strength”. “Since you can’t always see bones getting stronger, we track your results each session. With Osteostrong, changes in bone density are measured so it’s easy to analyze your progress”, Ryan added. My second session was a week later. Ryan again guided me through the warm up with the vibration plate and again performed the same exercises on the Spectrum Robotic Equipment. I was pleased to see progress
“I am going through menopause and have been worried about bone loss. After 1 year of Osteostrong, I have had a 62% strength gain and have increased bone density in my hips. Osteostrong can fit into anybody’s schedule; all it takes is 10 minutes once a week and I have had amazing results.” – Kim
in my strength numbers. The entire session took about 8-9 minutes. I wore my work clothes. When I got home, I told my wife that I didn’t feel any different. That changed the next morning when I woke up. There was no pain in the big toe on my left foot. I was able to walk pain-free and stand on my foot without it throbbing.

Winter Lights to Revel In FUN AT THE ARB
WOULDN’T IT BE FUN TO LOOK AT GIANT TREES THAT ARE WONDERFULLY DECORATED? How about eating s’mores over a roaring bonfire? Can you imagine yourself sipping hot cocoa or tea as you stroll through holiday lights? These are just a few of the things to do this December to bring light into the dark days of winter, and they are all available at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum in December.

will make.
After stringing the lights, mother began placing the other decorations, some were handmade; others were mementos from places we visited in the past and occasionally something fancy. Each decoration was relevant in its own way. One year, we had a string of popcorn and fake cranberries. And tinsel—always an overload of gold and silver tinsel. The star at the top of our tree was, for many years, a star my older sister made. My father had the honor of placing the star on the top of our tree. Signaling the end of our tree decorating, my father would bring the ladder out, always stretching a bit to reach the top, past the sides of the tree that were now filled to capacity. Our tree design became more sophisticated as we grew older. The homemade star was replaced with something more dignified. What didn’t change was the laughter and fun we had decorating the tree, that never went away. Inevitably, my sister and I moved forward with our lives. Still, many of our traditions today mirror those of my youth. The sequence of decorating the tree is one tradition that remains the same, with my wife playing the role of expert master planner. As the father, I still enjoy placing the star at the top of the tree. Our family’s traditions were borne from love and laughter. When I look at the lights this Christmas season, I will remember the best of those memories. Much to my wife’s dismay, I will add a string of gurgling bubble lights to our tree. In a darkened living room, watching those lights softly dance and flicker, I will again feel safe … wrapped in thoughts of days gone past. December 2019 | Eden Prairie Lifestyle

DID YOU KNOW THAT THE EXTRAORDINARY IS THE ORDINARY? What makes the ordinary extraordinary is your perspective. Take your lungs, for example. They aren’t particularly beautiful to look at, everyone has them and for the most part you don’t even think of them. But behind the scenes, they breathe - they give you life. And the story you tell about anything in your life, from the perspective you tell it can take the mundane and ordinary to the extraordinary. When was the last time you simply noticed the moon in the sky, the birds flying over your car on the way to work, watched a child engrossed in the joy of a simple game, or smelled the lilacs or evergreen on your morning walk? Take time to be present in the moment. Look at something you take for granted and shift it into a new perspective - one of gratitude. Notice how it feels now. Or take an unhappy or unwanted story you’ve been telling for a long time and reshape it to discover what that story tells you about what you DO want. Then vow to always substitute the new version for the old. Watch what happens. Sometime before the new year, sit down and make a list of everything in your life you think of as ordinary. Then, for each item, shift your perspective to find the extraordinary. Guess what - it’s been there all the time!
