There’s a unique perspective that working in publishing brings. While we certainly don’t want to wish our lives away, we’re always looking toward the future. Whether it’s planning our next issue or developing story ideas for the next year, we’re often already fast forwarded to future months before the current month has even begun. The fast-paced lifestyle required by this industry often makes it difficult to really settle down and absorb what’s going on around us. Before we know it, the year is over and it’s time to move forward again. Our wish for you this December is to take a moment to slow down a little bit. Enjoy

TIMES PAST A YULETIDE TRADITION
THE MAYOR'S CHRISTMAS TREE LIGHTING “CHRISTMAS IS A SEASON NOT ONLY OF REJOICING BUT OF REFLECTION.” —Winston Churchill The Mayor’s Christmas Tree Lighting is a time to gather together as a community and join in the spirit of goodwill and cheer. In Westfield, the formal tradition began in the 1990s with Rick Sullivan. Driving through town on a cold dark night—the resplendent evergreen with its soft glowing lights and tinsel gleaming on street lamps—is a signal to all what is best about this quaint downtown. Park Square, known to locals as “The Green,” has transformed over the town’s 350-year history. The many trees, planted with care and standing tall, have always been a great source of resident pride. In the early 1800s, townsfolk would water their horses in the fountain, and scales were provided for the weighing of hay. An article from 1835 describes it as “a park or common on the 'Green' to be done with the sanction of a committee appointed by the town and entirely at the expense of individuals.” The area was used for training drills for soldiers, trees were planted and water pumps were added. In 1859, the Park Square and Tree Committees were formed and elm trees were planted along the main streets. The Green has witnessed many political campaigns and band standing of all kinds. In 1902, President Roosevelt addressed a large audience from a platform at the park. Both the 300th and this year’s 350th town anniversary 16

A VERY FESTIVE DECEMBER
(CON TI N U ED)
THE LANTERN PARADE AND MAYOR’S TREE LIGHTING Come one, come all! Light up downtown with your unique lanterns. Live music brought to you by Patrick Kennedy and the Westfield High School Marching Band will have you dancing and skipping down to Park Square. Santa leads the parade, followed by a cheerful gang and as in years past, fun costumes are both encouraged and welcome. Friends and families of all ages can enjoy marching or find a nice cozy spot to wave and cheer along the merry route. Mayor Brian Sullivan and a happy crowd await the procession and commence with lighting the grand evergreen. To cap off the night, children can share their Christmas wishes with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Imagine, the very first Lantern Parade began seven years ago with Bob Plasse and his partner, James Homan. The tiny parade of close to 50 holiday revelers took a short and proud march from The Athenaeum to the annual Mayor’s Tree Lighting on the Town Green. In 2018, with more than 700 participants, the spirit of the event was palpable. Families crafted lanterns in the morning, and the town gathered together to kick off the season. “This year’s Lantern Light Parade and family workshop reflects WOW’s commitment to making events as accessible and inclusive as possible,” says The vice president of WOW programming, Bob Plasse. “Indeed, Decemberfest is a celebration of the wonderfully diverse communities in Westfield. Our workshop will teach kids and their families to craft our memorable Victorian lanterns. Attendees will also be able to create paper lanterns that will honor their own ethnic and holiday traditions, from Christmas to Kwanza, Diwali and Ramadan to Chanukah. Likewise, the parade will honor the Season of Light in all its iterations as a true celebration of the Westfield community.

Save the Date: The Mayor’s Tree Lighting is 6:30 p.m. Dec. 7!
HOLIDAY HOUSE TOUR The WOW 2019 Holiday House Tour will be held Dec. 8, 12-4 p.m. One of Westfield’s most admired events returns with seven uniquely decorated homes that are sure to spark holiday cheer! Enjoy an enchanting day traveling through architectural history. Begin with The Joseph Dewey House, a local landmark built in 1735. Then meander your way from a Cape on Tannery Road to an 1880 Italianate on Chestnut Street. Following Capes and Victorians, the tour ends at the Hawthorne Street home of Betty Faulhaber. “Each house is different both in design and décor,” Betty says, “but one thing they have in common is that they all have been lovingly cared for. The homeowners are pleased and proud to welcome you and share the joy of the holidays.” Historically, the tour marked the conception of WOW, first created as “A Dickens of a Day” for the Western Hampden Historical Society to raise money for historic preservation. When WOW was ultimately founded in 2003, it looked to produce a larger series of events under one theme; the small house tour evolved into Dickens Days and has since morphed into Decemberfest. “How wonderful to have a tradition enjoyed by hundreds every holiday, a true reflection of how far WOW has come in sixteen years,” Bob says. HOUSES ON TOUR + The Dewey House Colonial + The Peroulakis Cape + The Mayo New England Farmhouse + The Jaeger Home Italianate + The Rosenblum Cape + The Langlois Queen Anne Victorian + The Faulhaber Home Queen Anne Victorian Charitable tickets can be purchased for $20 in advance at the Westfield Atheneum, Rosewood Home & Gifts, and Pilgrim Candle. They also can be purchased at the Rinnova Building, the day of the event, starting at 11am. The tour starts at Westfield Creative Arts, 105 Elm St. in Westfield. WestfieldOnWeekends.com

Your Goals—Our Passion THE ONLY BOUTIQUE-STYLE INDOOR CYCLING STUDIO IN WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS ARTICLE CANDICE BERUBE PHOTOGRAPHY JEFF MASOTTI & KAT KATTLER
FUN. ENERGETIC. MOTIVATING. INSPIRING. All words used by members to describe the Roots Cycle experience, and exactly the vision Kari Demarinis (Founder) had when launching the studio. Encompassing the Roots mission statement of “Planting the Seeds for Healthy Bodies and Minds,” the Roots brand has been a household name for almost 12 years. Businesses include Roots Gymnastics, Root Learning Center, Roots Aquatics & Fitness Center, Roots Athletic Center, and most recently, Roots Cycle. Operating cutting-edge, stateof-the-art facilities and programming, Kari always wanted to offer indoor cycling. If you are a fitness enthusiast, you are no stranger to the spin classes that hit the scene almost twenty years ago. Kari knew there was an opportunity to bring a unique experience to the Pioneer Valley; a mind-body experience that transcended burning calories, working out and fun. Kari, and the managers of Roots Aquatics and Fitness Center and Roots Cycle, Jackie and Danielle, actively researched by traveling the country to experience indoor cycling studios, to get a sense for the exact vibe and vision they wanted. “We paid attention to everything from the check-in process to the shoes they rented out, and took away notes from each studio experience to bring back to Westfield,” Danielle Kireyczyk (Master Instructor) said. They were committed to the quality and the high energy found in urban areas, and they knew they needed the right instructors. Roots soon began building their cycling studio, and creating a training room for their instructors. They came across an instructor in NYC that had the right mix of musicality, on-trend programming, and enthusiam to help mentor and guide the way. The Roots Cycle team is made up of individuals with a passion for fitness who 28

believe in the Roots brand, and possess the musicality and charisma required to inspire others. Initially, the staff trained for approximately four months; they shadowed a minimum of 8-10 rides per week, learned to find the beat in the music, compiled playlists & choreography for review, and auditioned before a master trainer. “It was a long process but amazing to watch our instructors grow from the training we required,” Jackie Dorsey (General Manager) said. In March of 2018, Roots Cycle opened for business. The dedicated state of the art cycling studio is fit up with 44 bikes, tiered seating with amazing surround sound. When you take class for the first time, you’ll discover that the Roots Ride is a physical and emotional experience. Expect your first class to be challenging, but rewarding. No need to worry about keeping up your first few rides. You are in control of your ride intensity 100% of the time. Every class showcases a new playlist and new choreography, burning up to 700 calories per 45 minute ride. Not only will you find a full body workout, that will get you in the best shape of your life, but you will discover the community aspect that keeps you coming back. Anybody can do it! Roots Cycle offers classes 7 days per week, both morning and evenings. Rides are available to purchase in a variety of packages. Book your free ride today. www.rootscycle.com

GIVING BACK
St. Mary's School SUPPORT A SAINT PROGRAM
ARTICLE ROBIN JENSEN PHOTOGRAPHY KIMBERLEE JASZEK
JOYCE DONOHUE, AND HER SIX YOUNGER SIBLINGS, ATTENDED ST. MARY’S PARISH SCHOOL GROWING UP. In honor of their parents, Anna and Richard Morrissey, they created the Anna and Richard Morrissey tuition assistance award in 2017 at St. Mary's. Two of the Anna and Richard Morrissey beneficiaries will graduate this year: Joe Lucardi and Jack Lamirande. The family of Paighton Ramos, a junior, has received the assistance for the past two years. Joyce, a health scientist for the EPA Office of Water in Washington, D.C., was recently in town with her sister Anne. They stopped by the school to visit with their scholarship recipients and to offer them some advice. “Don’t be afraid to ask questions while you are in college," she says. "And, more importantly, pick something you truly enjoy when thinking about your future career." "St. Mary’s provided my siblings and I with the academic foundation to thrive and be successful,” she says, reflecting on her own education experience. The Support-a-Saint program is a new initiative at St. Mary’s School. In short, any individual, group of individuals, alumni class, or business has the opportunity to donate and support Saint Mary’s grades K-12. Joyce Donohue felt so moved to support our Saints that she joined with a group of her classmates to also create an assistance scholarship called the "7 from 57" award. If you are interested in “Support-a-Saint," please contact Robin at RJensen@StMSaints.org or call 413.568.1160. More than $106,525 was awarded this past year, and the hope is to continue to increase this amount. Thank you to Joyce, her siblings and the Class of 1957 classmates. Thank you for blessing our students and, most importantly, for supporting not just a Saint, but all the Saints! 38
