Here’s what clients are saying... “We heartily endorse Renee Clark to anyone looking to buy or sell a house in Lake County. Renee helped us buy our home in Gurnee 8 years ago, traipsing all over the county, and then sell our home for top dollar this summer, while helping us negotiate around a couple of tricky inspection repairs. We have recommended Renee to several friends who have had similar positive experiences over the last several years.”

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN BATH DESIGN IN 2020

ARTICLE MICHAEL BEIGHTOL PHOTOGRAPHY BRIAN ALLENDORFER

SW Lake Lifestyle | January 2020

AN UPGRADED MASTER BATH SUITE IS A MUST-HAVE FOR LOCAL HOMEOWNERS REMODELING IN 2020, SAYS NORTH BARRINGTON’S BRIAN ALLENDORFER, FIFTH-GENERATION OWNER OF BRIAN ALLENDORFER COMPANY. Whether it’s rain showers, soaker tubs, illuminating medicine cabinets or wall-hung toilets, a bathroom makeover creates a relaxing getaway, as well as a hyper-functional place to prepare for everyday life. Changes to master bath suite design are influenced by experiences homeowners have when traveling, whether to a local spa or a luxury hotel halfway around the world. “We’ve been installing lots of rain showers. Clients enjoy the feeling of an open-air shower, inspired by nature, in their own bathroom. A fold-down seat is a great way to further enhance the spa-like relaxation without taking up shower floor space,” Allendorfer says. “Another must-have feature is a heated floor throughout the master bath suite, even in the shower. It’s a great luxurious feel. CONTINUED >

RENOVATE & REFINE

(CON TI N U ED)

“A popular approach is a curb-less shower,” he adds. “It doesn’t require a stepover because it’s on the same plane as the bathroom floor. The shower floor has a trench or linear drain on one side with a slight slope to it. It’s great not having to step over that cumbersome curb anymore.” For relaxing in a warm bath, nothing beats a large soaker tub. BainUltra, a Canadabased manufacturer, designs hydro-thermo massage tubs with powerful air jets to fit nearly any space. There’s growing demand for aromatherapy (use of essential oils), thermotherapy (heat zones built into the tub) and chromatherapy (therapeutic use of underwater colored lights) in baths or showers so when combined, they evoke positive physical, mental and emotional changes. Allendorfer says he’s adding sound systems with in-walland-ceiling speakers for total escapism. Color schemes lean neutral with lots of whites and grays or even “Greige,” a combination of gray and beige. Adding gray to beige creates a richer color, one that works in both cool and warm color schemes. Natural stone is being replaced with high-quality

improvements in colors and finishes. In hard water environments marble and granite require much more cleaning and maintenance, Allendorfer says. There are even innovations in toilets worth

noting.

Allendorfer

recommends

Geberit North America in-wall systems for wall-hung toilets. The tank fits inside the wall and the toilet hangs from it (stopping short of the floor) for cleaner lines, a smaller footprint and easier cleaning. Wall-mounted flush plates enable a standard flush volume of 1.6 gallons or 1.28 gallons for solids and 0.8 gallons for liquids, saving thousands of gallons of water annually. SW Lake Lifestyle | January 2020

THINKING ABOUT A THREE-DAY HOLIDAY IN 2020? Consider Austin, Texas, the fastest-growing metropolis in the U.S. (population two-million-plus). Austin constantly changes while retaining an all-ages hipster vibe and a compactness perfectly suited for a weekend. Food here is fun, especially BBQ. The big name for brisket, ribs and pulled pork is Franklin’s (900 E. 11th St.; lunch only). There’s also Stubb’s (801 Red River St.; lunch, dinner and late night) which hosts local musicians and touring acts. There’s so much good “Q” some of the tastiest is in the back of bars (such as the Johnny-Cash-themed Mean Eyed Cat, 1621 W. 5th St.) or any number of food trucks. For easy sophistication try Mattie’s (811 W. Live Oak St.), in an expansive 1916 farmhouse. With a wide porch, vest-pocket bar, high-ceiling rooms and a menu with organic and sustainable ingredients, diners indulge in Mattie’s Fried Chicken, Pan Seared Texas Redfish or Wood Grilled Pork Tenderloin. The ambiance includes

a flock of peacocks that roost at night high in the trees surrounding this gracious place. For breakfast check out a bustling diner. Two of the best are 24 Diner (600 N. Lamar Blvd.; open late night) or Phoebe’s (533 W. Oltorf St.; breakfast & lunch only). No visit to Austin is complete without a taco from Torchy’s (multiple locations) or Guero’s (1412 S. Congress Ave.). The Austin music scene is legendary. So many artists - from Willie Nelson to Gary Clark, Jr. - made their mark here. The annual 6-day ACL Festival (Oct. 2-4 & 9-11) is produced by the folks that do Chicago’s Lollapalooza. For more intimate shows there’s the Moody Theater, home of the long-running PBS TV series, “Austin City Limits.” The club scene thrives by showcasing local acts on the way up or already established. Two venues of note: Continental Club (1315 S. Congress Ave.), home to Dale Watson and his Lone Stars, and Antone’s (305 E. 5th St.) featuring mostly the blues by the likes of Buddy Guy, Billy Gibbons, Dr. John and Leon Russell. CONTINUED >

This little exercise will help you find your “why” and help pinpoint a goal. Next decide what commitments you’re willing to make to achieve what you want. Commitments are different than goals. Your goal is the outcome. What if you want to lose 30 pounds? Well, commitments are the daily actions that build new healthy habits and lead to that goal of losing a lot of weight. Examples of commitments might include exercising 45 minutes three times a week; eating veggies at two meals a day; and getting to bed by 9 pm. Actions January 2020 | SW Lake Lifestyle

H e r e ’s to S e co n d Chances BEFORE THE SURGERY TOM POYNTON SAYS HIS HEALTH WAS GENERALLY GOOD. “A year earlier we spent more than two weeks hiking and climbing national parks in Utah and southern Colorado, including the north rim of the Grand Canyon and even up to the top of Angel’s Landing at Zion National Park.” He always believed that a health crisis happens to other guys. “Then on a New Year’s Eve I woke up in a hospital bed and realized I was the other guy now,” Poynton says. On December 31, 2018, after brushing off warning signs for more than two years, Poynton had quadruple bypass heart surgery at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital performed by Dr. Timothy Votapka. SW LAKE: BEFORE SURGERY IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU WERE LEADING A PRETTY ACTIVE LIFESTYLE. Tom Poynton: Sure, but I had been ignoring some warning signs for several years. I felt chest pressure on exertion that radiated down my arms, plus shortness of breath, plus heartburn. All episodes went away quickly which provided a sense of false relief. The warning signs got stronger and more frequent in Spring 2018. I was still active, although I stopped biking because of the discomfort experienced. SWL: WHAT LEAD YOU TO SEE YOUR DOCTOR FINALLY? TP: Late 2018 I was in Buffalo, NY, where I’m from, with my brother,

He said go see a cardiologist.

he did an EKG. After that he tells me to call Jan, my wife, so that she can drive me to Good Shepherd to meet a cardiologist, Dr. Doug Tomasian, who admitted me for observation. The next day I took a bunch of tests. Then more tests on Friday (Dec. 28) when they actually stopped me in the middle of a stress test. Dr. Tomasian did an angiogram which wasn’t good either.
