D GO O DREAMY DENIM WOMEN WILL LOVE

LEVI’S PRESENTED BY SOMETHINGCHIC

“Levi’s are iconic,” begins Linda Brooks, owner of SOMETHINGchic. “They’ve been around since 1873…and they do that by always updating their original lines. My mom wore them in the 70s and they are still just as stylish today. Whether you prefer 100% cotton or good stretch in your jeans, Levi’s has it. Plus, their high cotton denim is so easy to customize and add your own distressing, making your pair unique.” She also applauds their move to more sustainable practices. WHY ARE JEANS AN INVESTMENT PIECE? “Jeans are one of the foundations to your wardrobe. You can wear a pair of jeans multiple times a week and create different looks by just changing your top, shoes, coats, and accessories. And when you find the perfect fitting jeans, you buy them, because they are worth it. No one will notice if your jeans aren’t up-to-date or luxury denim if your butt looks amazing. Also, jeans don’t ‘style out’ as fast as other trendy items. You can wear a pair of jeans for years and still be in style.” DO YOU HAVE ANY STYLING ADVICE FOR DENIM? “Straight ankle crop denim is definitely trending. Don’t be afraid of denim that may seem short. Or if Levi’s are too long, cut them off. Since they are mostly such a high cotton fabric, they are perfect for distressing and adding a raw hem. Also the majority of Levi’s are high waisted. Giving your shirt a little front tuck is such an easy styling trick to give a more polished look and highlight the waist. And really, jeans are so versatile. Dress them up or dress them down. They look great with heels, sneakers, boots, and sandals. The options are endless.”

AG JEANS PRESENTED BY CRICKET CLOTHING COMPANY

“I love AG denim because it has a great fit and is made of premium, super soft denim with just the right amount of stretch,” explains Laverne Royer, owner of Cricket Clothing Company in downtown Billings. “AG offers many washes and colors in their denim -one can’t have too many great pairs of jeans,” she adds. WHY ARE JEANS AN INVESTMENT PIECE? “Jeans are an investment piece because they are typically something you are going to wear a lot. We show our customers how to dress them up and dress them down. Denim is something you can wear casual, out to dinner, to a party…almost anywhere.” She also points out that denim is an all season fabric, which means if you invest in a pair that you love, the price per wear is very low, ensuring you receive maximum value (even with a higher price tag). DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR SOMEONE JEAN SHOPPING? “Typically, it’s wise to try on a few brands of denim to find a fit and style that is just right for you. Cricket carries 3 brands of denim with different fits and price points. AG denim comes in different styles and fits so we can find a style to work for most women’s body types.”

GOOD JEANS (CONTINUED)

DL1961 PRESENTED BY SOUTH HARPER BOUTIQUE AND MERCANTILE “DL’s mission includes passion for their product, inspired by a clean creation process, resulting in a premium denim product that feels great and looks even better,” replies Kirsten Harper, owner of South Harper, when asked why she loves DL1961. “While the average pair of jeans will use up to 1500 gallons of water to create, DL jeans uses just 8 gallons of water, resulting in saving approximately 50 million gallons of water each year. Instead of using chemicals to vary the wash in different styles, special ozone machines are used to create the different washes that you see in DL1961 denim by using air from our environment.” WHAT ELEMENTS ARE MOST IMPORTANT WHEN SHOPPING FOR JEANS? “The most important thing to look for in denim, outside of the sustainability and longevity of the product, is the fit. You want a pair of jeans to be something that can be worn multiple times and keep the shape. You want the product to FEEL good on you and be worn in multiple scenarios, whether dressed up or down.” HOW DO YOU RECOMMEND CARING FOR DENIM? “I wear my jeans up to 5 times before washing them. You should turn them inside-out and wash them in cold water, then hang them to dry. Hot water can fade your jeans and dryers break-down the fibers and produce all of that lint.” GIVE A FEW REASONS YOU BELIEVE QUALITY DENIM IS WORTH THE SPLURGE. “Although premium denim comes with a higher price, you can wear them longer than a lesser-made and lesser quality product. A very loved pair of premium denim can last for years.” Kirsten adds that premium denim maintains it shape over time, even getting better with each wash and wear.

S PA N X D E N I M PRESENTED BY APRICOT LANE BOUTIQUE

“Spanx denim has all of the typical benefits of Spanx: slimming built in panels, structured fabric, and a premium fit that will hold their shape over time,” says Michelle Dowler, owner of Apricot Lane. “Another bonus, they don’t have to be washed after every wear! Cue second day hair and second day denim so we can play more of our day! Our customer feedback has been fantastic and it is probably our largest reorder of the year.” DO YOU HAVE ANY STYLING ADVICE FOR JEANS/DENIM? “The key is taking the time to try them on, but it is so worth it. We’re seeing many new denim trends right now and it can be a little intimidating. You can never go wrong with your traditional styles, but we do encourage a sort of ‘branching’ out to all of our customers and friends.” She lauds the versatility of good jeans, which can be worn for everything from a night on the town to a baseball game. WHY ARE JEANS AN INVESTMENT PIECE? “Most people wear jeans more than any other type of clothing. When you think about cost per wear they are actually a great value. Not to mention, can you honestly remember a bad day when you felt amazing in your outfit? NOPE! Do NOT let your closet be the home to any denim that doesn’t make you feel great.” WHAT ELEMENTS ARE MOST IMPORTANT WHEN SHOPPING FOR JEANS? “Fit is so important! Styles and washes will always change with the seasons, or just come down to personal preference. Fit is something you can’t fake. We also have to be experts on how denim will age and stretch. Some brands ‘break in’ like a pair of shoes, others will stretch, and some will totally hold their shape or ‘recover’ from wear.”

JAG JEANS PRESENTED BY NEECEE’S “JAG has a new line of denim called Best Kept Secret,” says Denice Johnson, owner of Neecee’s. “It’s booty lifting and tummy tucking...we have sold hundreds of them and gals come back for more washes and different styles. It doesn’t matter if you’re 20 or 70. They’re amazing!” HOW DO YOU DETERMINE IF SOMEONE HAS THE RIGHT FIT, STYLE, CUT, WASH, ETC.? “The style, cut, and wash depend on personal tastes. Skinny. Straight leg. Bootcut. Flare. High waist. Mid rise. Washes. All of those items have to be determined as you visit with your customer. We can encourage them to try something ‘out of the box’, but in the end we strive for them to feel their best in their new jeans.” GIVE A FEW REASONS YOU BELIEVE QUALITY DENIM IS WORTH THE SPLURGE. “Jeans are an investment piece because they are a mainstay of everyday lifestyle, whether you work in the home or outside the home. The better the technology in the denim fabric and fit, the better the longevity of your jean. JAG’s Best Kept Secret are a great value for such an incredible fabric and fit. Styles vary but all are priced under $95.” WHAT CAN WE DO TO ENSURE OUR JEANS MAINTAIN THEIR SHAPE AND COLOR? “JAG recommends washing your jeans the first time inside out with vinegar as that will set the indigo dye. Don’t wash your jeans in too hot of water or put in the dryer.”

Swift River Ranch

A PICTURESQUE VENUE, WHERE WOMEN TAKE THE LEAD.

18

Billings Lifestyle | May 2020

TUCKED AWAY ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF TOWN, NESTLED BESIDE THE BANKS OF THE YELLOWSTONE, THE SWIFT RIVER RANCH HAS BUILT A REPUTATION AS AN IDYLLIC VENUE WELL-SUITED FOR EVENTS OF ALL SHAPES AND SIZES. What began as a single request to host an event on the property has since blossomed into a bustling business staging more than 30 events each year. “The owner of the property received a request about 8 years ago to have a wedding here,” begins Heather Calderwood, event coordinator and property manager. “It was a high country wedding…sawdust on the floor. Within a week or two, they were inundated with people wanting to have their weddings at the venue.” The property was originally intended to be used for high-end, intimate gatherings of 8-10 people, where a formal dinner would be served. “Things snowballed so quickly, they never even got that far,” recounts Heather. Once word of mouth began to circulate about the venue’s unique charm and sweeping views, bookings poured in and Swift River had its start. Now, Heather and her associate Melynie Moore (also an Event Coordinator) lead a team of five ladies who take care of everything related to the event, from set-up to tear down…and beyond. “From running heavy equipment to sewing a bride into her wedding dress. We want to do as much as we possibly can to make our clients happy and stress-free.” She emphasizes the importance of being open and honest with clients, ensuring that expectations align with what they are able to provide. As the venue is a barn, Heather likes to be candid about its laid back, rustic atmosphere, especially when consulting with potential brides.

SWIFT RIVER RANCH (CONTINUED)

Billings Lifestyle | May 2020

Yet, weddings are far from the only events hosted by Swift River Ranch. Their repertoire includes birthdays,

anniversaries,

receptions,

dances,

period reenactments, and corporate events. “We hosted the GOP dinner,” Heather adds. Some events take place in a single evening, others may require an entire weekend. Guests are able to camp on-site if necessary and there is a honeymoon cabin available for usage. The barn itself is able to house 500 people seated, 1,000 people standing, offering great flexibility for those who may be concerned about inclement weather forcing the party indoors. Heather and Melynie wear many hats on the job, including impressive culinary skills. Depending on the needs of the client, the team may cook dinner for an event, feeding up to 150 people or more. Paths to Success Before co-managing Swift River Ranch, Heather and Melynie spent four years coordinating public events together outside of Montana. When the opportunity arose for Heather to work at Swift River about 7 years ago, Melynie followed shortly after. “Melynie has a Master’s in art and teaching,” explains Heather. “She handles the artistic side. My side tends to be paperwork and consulting with clients.” Each of them have more than a decade of planning experience, including dance recitals and plays, which helped them understand the logistics of operating large-scale events. Now, as a female owned and operated endeavor, Swift River Ranch is a testament to the unlimited potential of women in business. “A woman in general needs to be able to stand her ground and be confident in herself, and that’s that. She knows what is right and she knows what she wants.” Through her own confidence and the array of talents possessed by the staff, Heather knows they can handle anything an event may throw their way. “We have done it all,” concludes Heather. “We operate equipment, make the repairs, and will also decorate the cake.” Whether setting up tables and chairs for 500 people, or baking desserts for an intimate gathering, Swift River Ranch is dedicated to making their guests feel at home. PRETTY IN PINK

For more than two decades, Kris has been the owner of Accent, a full service commercial print shop located in downtown Billings. In addition to being a full time business owner, she owns and manages several local rental properties. “I also renovate homes in the Billings area,” she adds. As a woman of many talents, and many responsibilities, she strives to find time to indulge in her passions. One such outlet is her love of classic cars. “When I am driving one of my cars, time seems to slow down,” Kris describes. “The worries seem to disappear and life is good. I enjoy seeing the smiles on the faces of others, as if it brings back memories of good times. Owning a classic car is not only about the car, but the friendships that are created amongst people with similar interests.” A lifelong car enthusiast, Kris has always held a special place in her heart for the Dodge Charger. “I remember the first time I saw a 1968 Charger, I was 8 years old,” she recalls. “I thought it was the coolest car ever. I must admit that the ’68, ’69, and ’70 Chargers are my all-time favorite cars.” Her first car was a blue 1970 Dodge Charger, which she purchased after her freshman year in college. In addition to the pink Charger, she currently owns a 1969 Charger and a 1970 Dodge Challenger RT/SE. “I can enjoy driving this car daily, but it’s also fun to drive in parades,” says Kris. “A car such as this is so much more than daily transportation. It takes a person back to the days when 8-track tapes were the thing and Burning the Point was what we did on Friday and Saturday nights.”

PACK YOUR SMALL SPACES WITH A BIG PUNCH BY STARTING YOUR OWN CONTAINER GARDEN

IT MAY BE THAT YOU DON’T HAVE MUCH SPACE TO WORK WITH; MAYBE YOU ARE ALWAYS ON-THE-MOVE; OR, MAYBE YOU JUST SIMPLY COLOR TO YOUR SPACE. It doesn’t matter what your reason may be. Container gardening—the practice of growing plants exclusively in containers rather than in the ground—is a great way to pack some punch into a small (or portable!) space. With container gardening, there are almost endless possibilities. Whether you’re looking to grow decorative plants or edible ones, there’s likely an option for you— and it doesn’t have to be limited to simply growing herbs

WANT SOME GREENERY TO ADD A LITTLE BIT OF

on your windowsill. There are several factors to keep in mind when you first start your container garden, the first of which being to decide whether you’re going to keep it indoors or out. Different plants grow best in different environments, so be sure to choose species that will thrive where you’ve decided to put them—making sure they are receiving the proper amount of sunlight and moisture.

Here are a few other things to be aware of when you get started: CONTAINER SIZES: Large containers may be easier to grow plants in than small since

they have more space for large root systems and larger amounts of soil retain more moisture. + CONTAINER DRAINAGE: Your container must have a drainage system—even if it’s just a few holes you drill in it yourself. For plants that need to be watered more frequently, consider self-watering containers. + CONTAINER MATERIALS: The fun thing about container gardens is that you don’t have to limit yourself. Get creative with the containers you use (while keeping the above information in mind)! We love repurposing vintage items into unique containers.

Why stick with one kind of garden? Once you’re a container garden pro, there are tons of different theme gardens you can create all around your home. Save some space by building your garden vertically instead of horizontally. If you’re running out of room indoors, try placing all your pots on an old bookshelf or baker’s rack.

The containers you choose are going to largely depend on the type of plant you’re trying to grow and the best space and environment for it to grow in. If you’re looking for the bare basics, there are a lot of different vegetables — like cabbage, celery, green onions, lettuce and leeks — that can grow in water alone. If you’re looking for a way to use that vintage glassware or pitchers hiding in your cupboards, here’s your chance! If you don’t have a lot of counter space (or space in general for that matter), herbs don’t need a ton of room to grow. Consider turning several small planters into a window garden for basil, cilantro, dill or thyme. In order to grow larger plants, such as tomatoes, lemons or — yes, even avocados — you’ll need some larger containers, like large pots, baskets or box planters.

T R ICI A K EL LY, R N BSN A native of Cody, Wyoming, Tricia graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1997. She made the decision to move to Billings soon after, motivated by both a desire to be closer to family as well as the chance to begin her nursing career at St. Vincent’s and Yellowstone Surgery Center. Much of her nursing experience has been in the operating room, and she displayed a passion for plastic surgery in particular, even early on in her career. Prior to working for Billings Plastic Surgery, Tricia circulated many plastic surgery cases with Dr. Grosso and Dr. Peet (before his retirement). “I enjoyed the challenge of reconstructive and cosmetic surgical cases,” she recalls. “When the opportunity came to work exclusively at Billings Plastic Surgery, I jumped on it. That was nearly 15 years ago and I have never looked back.” About five years ago, Tricia was presented with the opportunity to found the aesthetic division within Billings Plastic Surgery. Bolstered by her extensive knowledge and years of experience with laser and aesthetic procedures, she eagerly assumed this new role, helping the fledgling division flourish. “We have grown tremendously and I am very proud of that,” Tricia states. “We have an excellent team.” When she isn’t at work, Tricia embraces the excitement and charm of the chaos that is motherhood. She and her husband, Donovan, have three children: Kaylor, 22, Zoie, 18, and Sophia, 7. They also have a “Schweenie” named Hugo (3/4 Dachshund and 1/4 Shih Tzu). “You can usually find me chasing my kids to various activities such as soccer, gymnastics, piano, swimming lessons, and everything else in between….yes, I have the honorary label ‘soccer mom’,” she adds. Tricia enjoys skiing, cooking, traveling, indulging in good food, exercising, and, when time allows, crocheting. But most of all, she loves being a mom. Over the course of her career at Billings Plastic Surgery, Tricia has discovered the elements which make this practice truly special. “Our level of compassion, dedication, and the excellent level of care that we provide emotionally and physically without compromise,” she attests. “We truly wholeheartedly care about our patients.”

BUILDING HOME POSSIBILITIES

Before our remodel I was embarrassed to host parties or have company in our kitchen. It was crowded, dark, outdated, and not vey functional. After Ty Nelson's amazing renovation, I now love hosting people and we are so proud of our kitchen. To say we highly recommend Ty Nelson Design & Remodel would be an understatement!” ~ Pat and Jamie Carahasen
