Comfortable. WHEN I WAS LITTLE I HATED DENIM. It was unforgiving. It went only where it wanted to go and it creased my body in ways that made room for the material, not for me. Denim jackets, jeans, denim shirts—all of it was horrible. Then one day: the invention of stretchy jeans. It was a marvelous revolution in the fashion world, or at least my fashion world, meaning that I could now enjoy buying and wearing jeans because they were finally comfortable. And now? Denim is a staple in my wardrobe! When I pick up a fashion magazine or read an online article

ARTIST’S PALETTE

YOUR WALLS AN INTERVIEW WITH LOCAL ARTIST ANI EASTWOOD

ANI EASTWOOD’S ARTWORK IS UNMISTAKABLE. She has undoubtedly developed a style that is all her own, and she has the techniques to prove it. C: It seems like you’ve had a love of the arts, specifically painting, all your life. Tell us, how did you decide to work with the materials you use today? A: My grandfather used to say, “If you find what you love to do, you will never work a day in your life.” I felt this way about my artwork from the beginning. I drew and colored all the time as a child, and the gap between my imagination and my hand narrowed but it never entirely goes away. I fell in love with oils right away and started working with them at about 15. They are smooth and you have time with them to layer before they dry. You just can’t get the same effects with other paints. Mostly what I have found is attention to details and quality materials make the work. I also got sick and tired of fragile paintings with canvases that could dent when they’re shipped or just look at them wrong. I designed a frame style is much more durable and strong, as well as beautiful. C: We want to know about the craft and technical process of giclée printing. What kind of end product does it leave you with and how did you come across this method? original paintings. Very accurate, refined printheads with 12 color archival inks, which are known in the art world for producing their museum quality reproductions. These machines, paired with a good printer who knows the craft, can yield the finest quality prints. I tried selling and printing just about every type of other print in the process of finding giclées and slowly learned the technical trade myself while saving for years for the equipment. It is important to me to do every part of the process of my work myself because every step influences the end result.

ARTIST’S PALETTE (CONTINUED)

C: So much of your creative content is centered around nature and the places you’ve been. Tell us, how do you start each piece? Do you have an image in mind or do you start with an emotion, color, size, etc.? A: This process really varies for me. A painting can literally just fall out of thin air when I sit down or be very planned and calculated. Sometimes the pieces are directly from my own photographs and I’m wanting to sort of historically capture the place and moment. Other times they are completely imaginary or just inspired by a wildflower or native grass. C: Why Montana? Out of all the places you’ve been, why here? A: I have deep history in Montana and spent my childhood here in the Bitterroot Valley and Missoula. In 1882, my great great grandparents Aaron and Julia Conner homesteaded in the southern Bitterroot Valley off the Oregon Trail. The town of Conner was named in honor of Aaron Conner who ended up being a judge in the legislature and started a successful hay/sheep ranch in the farmlands under Trapper’s Peak. I also grew up outside, camping with my dad, fly fishing with my grandpa, and riding horses up bass creek with my mother. I owe so much to them because they helped me find the love and home in the beautiful outdoors we all treasure in Montana. C: Are you more proud or perhaps more fond of one painting in particular? It doesn’t have to be a recent one! Perhaps one from your early days that made a special mark on your career or personal life? A: This is a difficult question for me to answer because they all are part of my story and the creation of them has helped me over so many hurtles and changes in life. I think of them sort of as children and know the titles and sizes of all of them by heart

12

as well as copyrighted and recorded all of them. For Montana imagery, the following would probably include but not be limited to “Morning on the River, Trapper’s Peak, Elk Calling, Rattlesnake Creek, Keeping Up the Pace, and The Bitterroots.” C: Where can someone find your work in Missoula? A: The easiest, prime location to view my work in person is The Artists’ Shop, 127 North Higgins. I offer a wide variety of originals, giclée, and greeting cards in a permanent but transitioning display. I also

have built and designed multiple websites for my portfolios and giclée printing services over many years so that my work is widely available to anyone, anywhere. Online, there are very complete portfolios and shopping sites for all price ranges with originals and prints available. You can find my work at AniEastwoodFineArt.com and MissoulaArtistsShopStore.com. C: Lastly, what do you think your work says about you as an artist? A: Painting has brought a lot of peace and serenity in my life, as well as a new level of dedication and patience. It also has consistently given me direction at times where things were hardest and I didn’t know what to do next. I hope the images bring this feeling of serenity, beauty and passion into people’s homes and visual space. I won’t say it is an easy profession, but I will say it is a valuable journey to become a fine art craftsman.

FASHION ISN’T ALWAYS ABOUT THE LATEST TRENDS. Sometimes, especially in a community such as Missoula, it’s all about simplicity and versatility without compromising style. Jenifer Bain from JL+KO shares some insight on her little shop and her big passion for simple fashion. C: Tell us about the three concepts you had in mind when bringing JL+KO to Missoula. We know for certain that it really boils down to product, who’s buying the product, and the environment in which they’re making the purchase so let us know what your recipe and vision was. J: In the years I spent planning to open JL+KO I knew I needed to offer

something different in order to succeed. It came down to three elements: a beautiful aesthetic, authentic atmosphere, and a well thought out, curated clothing and accessory collection. When customers walk into my store I want them to feel as if they are walking into a friend’s house. I was over the stale shopping experiences and wanted to create something a bit different than the traditional retail model of “Can I help you find something?” Many of my customers I now consider my friends and I love that about my job. There is no better feeling than having someone walk out of the dressing room and say, “I never thought I could wear this! I love it!” or “I feel so amazing in this!”

C: Do you feel that JL+KO has changed since you first imagined it? If so, in what ways? J: JL+KO has changed and evolved since the inception in so many ways. After year one, I realized there was a deep need for men’s clothing. I started small and within the first few months doubled, then tripled my men’s inventory due to the growing need I was seeing. I’ve also greatly expanded my apothecary and accessory collections. I love helping customers put together gifts for friends, husbands, wives, etc. Because of this, I have curated a great selection of the perfect gifts for men and women. I like that JL+KO is now known as more than a clothing store. I’m the place people come to find someone a gift or that perfect piece of jewelry in addition to finding amazing pieces to add to their wardrobe. I also 16

C: Accessories! There are so many talented artists in Missoula. Which styles generally catch your eye and what local artist have you been recently excited about? J: We are so incredibly lucky to have so many talented artists! I absolutely love carrying local lines. Lumin jewelry is definitely my best selling jewelry line and Cassie, the owner, is absolutely amazing. I cannot say enough about her quality and the passion she puts into each and every piece. Love Zoelle is another one of my personal faves. Her style is simple and classic. C: When the coronavirus hit our town, lots of us got to enjoy your daily or weekly “fashion shows” via social media. I was personally amazed at how the same shirt or dress could be worn so differently with the addition of a belt or by simply tucking some fabric in. Can you explain the importance of versatility in the lines you carry and how they cater to all body shapes and ages? J: Yes, during the shut down, I had to get creative and create ways to connect with my customers even though I couldn’t see them in person. That’s when I came up with the “fashion shows.” It was so much fun and my audience grew daily. I involved my daughters and my nieces and we had a blast! People love seeing what the outfit looks like on an actual human and not just on the hanger. I have continued this tradition and now do my weekly “Thursday Try On Sessions” (on my Instagram & Facebook stories @jl.ko) with a dear friend of mine, Kera. We have totally different body types and I wanted to celebrate that by showing everyone how the same outfit can work for various body types. It was my goal when opening JL+KO to change the mindset that most boutiques only carry clothing for smaller people. That is not the case with JL+KO. We carry clothing for all body shapes and sizes. Simple little tweaks, such as adding a belt or doing a mini front tuck can completely transform an outfit! It’s so fun to educate others on this and give them simple tips that will change the way they feel about getting dressed in the morning. 18

A HOME FOR FORGOTTEN CHAPTERS SENESCENCE CARE ASSISTED LIVING OFFERS SERVICES FOR THE AGING COMMUNITY MERRIAM-WEBSTER DEFINES “SENESCENCE” AS THE STATE OF BEING OLD, OR THE PROCESS OF BECOMING OLD. And becoming old doesn’t always conjure positive connotations. To Liz Rolle, however, aging is beautiful, and the inspiration behind the company she started in 2018. Liz established Senescence Care Assisted Living after getting her Masters in Public Health from The University of Montana, and discovered that Missoula is woefully lacking in services for the aging community. During her schooling, Liz worked with the Missoula Coalition on Aging and Disability (M-COAD) now known as Dementia Friendly Missoula. One of the projects she worked on was mapping out resources in the area for people with cognitive deterioration. The intent was to provide referral information to 22

Missoula Valley Lifestyle | September 2020

ARTICLE ERYN ASTON PHOTOGRAPHY INSPIRED BY MONTANA practitioners around the community so they could better serve aging patients, especially those with dementia and other age-related cognitive decline. What Liz found was that housing for people in need of memory care is nearly in a state of crisis here. “The aging process is as varied as the Montana sky is wide. Unfortunately, our local housing options do not match the spectrum of needs for this demographic,” said Liz. Services for aging individuals in Missoula are limited to senior living apartments for the fairly independent, skilled nursing facilities for those with medical needs, and locked memory care units for people with significant cognitive decline or who are at risk of wandering. Less abundant, and fairly unknown, is a fourth type of care: small-home assisted living. Many of these types of homes around Missoula were established when one owner had to quit a job to take care of an aging family member but they still needed to earn an income. Therefore, they decided to house additional seniors who would benefit from such living arrangements. State licensure is required in order to offer these services. There are several regulations about the building itself, including an annual inspection from the fire marshal. The owner must keep detailed records of each resident’s diet and medicine management and a state surveyor makes a random visit at least once a year to ensure all requirements are met and all records are accurate. Through her research for M-COAD, it became obvious to Liz that of the different types of facilities for the aging population, the small-home model offers consistently superior results to folks with minimal to moderate cognitive decline. “People who still have a lot of vibrancy are often misplaced into a home where they are expected to be too independent, or to a home where they lose their autonomy. This small-home model allows people to maintain autonomy while still getting the care they need,” said Liz. CONTINUED >

LOCALLY OWNED (CONTINUED)

Liz debated the benefits of building from scratch versus purchasing something already built but nothing she saw seemed to fit her requirements. Finally, an almost perfect house became available in the Upper Miller Creek area. Liz and a group of her friends and family immediately began cleaning, painting, and making modifications in order to best meet the needs of the future residents. Â St. Thomas House was established in March of 2018 under the Senescence Care Organization. It opened with just one resident but soon came to be home to seven individuals. Some were no longer safe living alone and others just wanted the comfort of living at home without the responsibility of running a household and without putting any burden on their children. The residents enjoy private bedrooms, a comfy living room, a quiet den, and a spacious dining area and kitchen. They have flexible schedules and space to work on projects or hobbies. They can participate in cooking and cleaning, or they can sit back and be catered to. Unlike many people in our senior population who become isolated in their own houses, the residents at St. Thomas House always have plenty of options for socialization. Â The small size and intimate nature allows staff to establish close relationships with the residents and pick up on changes in behavior that might indicate a health concern. They are also able to keep closer tabs on folks who might be at risk of wandering, thus promoting a safe living environment without stifling oversight. Apart from the care provided to the residents at St. Thomas House, one of the biggest rewards that Liz receives from running Senescence Care is the peace of mind that she is able to offer to the families who have entrusted her with their loved ones. Branching out from solely resident care, Liz also recently obtained licensure to include senior day services. Similar to daycare for the elderly, this is an opportunity not only for caregivers to have a bit of respite from the stress and demands of watching over their loved ones but it also provides an opportunity for a person to get out of their house and socialize with others in a safe environment with staff that understand the specific needs of caring for a person with cognitive decline. Liz hopes to open more homes like St. Thomas House in the future. She continues to keep a proactive approach toward caring for our aging population here in Missoula and establishing resources to support them and their caregivers in order to maintain the highest level of independence and the best quality of life for as long as possible. 24

As a remedy for the clothing chaos, I created two packing list templates: one for warm weather and one for cold weather. I’ll make a few tweaks here and there based on destination (what you need for a trip to the Caribbean is different from what you need in Northern California). (Pictured during a 2019 lunch while wandering around Helsinki, Finland.) + HUNTER TALL GLOSS RAIN BOOTS ($150) If rain is in the forecast, and I know I’m planning on walking a lot, these boots are in my bag. Sure, they take up a little space but they’ve kept my feet dry and warm in rain, sleet, and snow. The glossy finish makes these rain boots just as stylish as they are practical. I found my Noli’s in an activewear boutique over a year ago and now have four pairs. They are my go-to for long flights and always look chic. (Pictured on a mother-daughter trip to Lucerne, Switzerland.)

+ TORY BURCH ELLA PATENT TOTE ($198) When it comes to my carry-on bag, this tote is roomy enough for a laptop but can collapse if you need less space. The patent leather details make the bag stylish

PARTING THOUGHTS

Sizing Up the Clothing Industry

ARTICLE SUSAN BALDANI

ONE OPINION ON WOMEN’S CLOTHING SIZE VARIATIONS BUYING CLOTHES FOR MY HUSBAND IS A BREEZE. For pants,

big or small that size actually is. And length is another tricky situation.

all I have to know is his waist size and inseam, and voilà, perfect fit

I’m 5’4” which is considered “average” in the U.S., but when buying

every time! The same goes for his shirts. A large is a large, no matter

pants sometimes “average” is too long and “short” fits just right.

what brand.

This is the reason I have to bring at least three sizes of various

I wish it were that easy when it comes to buying clothing for myself,

lengths into the fitting room. It’s a frustrating experience and buying

especially when shopping for pants. Knowing my size is never enough

clothes online is almost impossible. It usually involves shipping items

because every designer seems to have his or her own idea of how

back because they don’t fit.

Another observation when shopping for clothes is that the more expensive the brand, the more generous they are with their cuts. I guess if a woman believes she wears a size 8, buying a size 10 just won’t do, and that insulting piece of clothing will be left behind on the rack. Shirts and blouses are a bit easier because if they’re a little too big or a little too small, they can still look okay. When in the fitting room I usually have at least two sizes of each to try on. If only the clothing industry would make women’s sizes consistent, we would then have a better idea as to what size we actually wear. Right now, the only things I can confidently buy right off the rack are socks. At least my feet are happy. 34
