LEGACY SOCIETY CARING FOR THE COMMUNITY
Bill and Lynne Schumacker moved to West Chester Township in 2009, drawn by everything this area had to offer for two almost empty nesters. Their careers kept them busy – Bill in banking and Lynne at her brother’s dental practice – but as neighbors and colleagues became friends, Bill and Lynne became more involved in their new community. “What began as invitations to fundraisers, or events I was asked to attend on behalf of the bank, became a real commitment to West Chester/Liberty,” says Bill. Both Bill and Lynne were raised in families that believed in giving back, so its not surprising that they have continued that tradition by serving in leadership roles and as volunteers for local organizations like the Rotary Club and the Community Foundation. However,
they have taken the tradition of giving back a step further by including a Legacy Gift to the Community Foundation of West Chester/Liberty in their estate plan. “Everyone has to make their own choices with their charitable dollars. For us, we could not think of a better long-term way to serve our community than by planning a legacy gift at the Foundation. By doing this, our family will be helping to care for the needs in the community for years to come.” Although they do not yet have a specific cause in mind to support with their Legacy Gift, by giving through the Community Foundation Bill and Lynne could be flexible with their giving and take advantage of the Foundation’s charitable expertise.

West Chester + Liberty Lifestyle | October 2020
HOW IS YOUR CONDIMENT GAME THESE DAYS? Are you slathering your hot dogs with ketchup? Steve Schneider, an accountant in West Chester, has some advice for you. Swap those condiments out for his passion project: homemade hot sauce. “I’ve liked hot sauce for as long as I can remember,” he says. About a decade ago, Steve began growing plants in his home, and started to branch out into growing peppers through the support of a local Pepper Club. The members meet in the fall to order specific seeds, and the seeds grow in Krohn Conservatory’s Warder Nursery until they can be transported home by the growers in the spring. He uses the peppers to make his own paprika, chili powder and hot sauce. “The smell of slow-roasted peppers after 12 hours is wonderful,” he says. It can pose a challenge to experiment with the more exotic types of peppers, as most groceries don’t offer a large variety. He recommends going to Jungle Jim’s to find some unique types of peppers to use in your recipes. Also, amateur cooks can experiment with taste between the same type of pepper when it’s green vs. when it has ripened to red. Steve also doesn’t follow recipes to a tee, but rather spends time trying experiments to see what he likes and doesn’t. “I don’t measure ounces, cups, etc., yet do count how many of each type of pepper I put into the sauce. I love the smell of hot sauce simmering on the stove. The smell resonates throughout the house,” he says. Steve recommends trying hot sauce on everything from potato chips and chicken to creamy mashed potatoes. If you are interested in joining the Pepper Club, you can learn more about what membership involves by emailing Steve at steve@lasbtn.com. Even if you don’t join the club, consider supporting the Warder Nursery plant sale in the Spring, where you can buy pepper plants donated by the club.

ROAD TRIP
We e k e n d i n I n d y FOOD AND CULTURE ABOUND IN INDIANAPOLIS ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY MICHELLE MOODY
IF YOU’RE ACHING FOR A VACATION BUT NOT QUITE READY TO BOARD A PLANE, WE’VE GOT THE PERFECT WEEKEND ESCAPE FOR YOU: INDIANAPOLIS! This Midwestern gem began honoring their milestone bicentennial anniversary this summer, and the celebration continues through next May. There are dozens of different itineraries one could follow to enjoy a weekend in this vibrant city. For this weekend getaway, we focus specifically on the booming food and art scene that can be found less than two hours away. “Indianapolis is a thriving food city,” says Nate Swick, communications manager for Visit Indy. “We have a lot of options. No matter what your palette is, you can find something to excite.” With dozens of amazing food choices throughout the city, it was hard to narrow down our selections for where to dine. Here we highlight two picks for each meal during your stay. BREAKFAST/BRUNCH Milktooth is the place to go for brunch in Indy. This fine diner was chosen as one of 10 best new restaurants in the United States by Bon Appétit. Menu options change daily and range from sweet to savory. Some standouts are the cornbread waffle with poached peaches, berry Dutch baby pancake and the caramelized onion strata with local chanterelle mushrooms, melted leeks and fried kale. For the adventurous eater, they offer a crispy tongue and beet hash or a fish plate with oysters and sardines. MilkToothIndy.com Gallery Pastry Bar offers decadent desserts, pastries, crepes and more to satisfy your sweet tooth. Their buttery Caramelized onion strata and dulce espresso at Milktooth
croissants with 81 delicate layers are made fresh daily in the open-view kitchen. Display cases feature delectable desserts offered throughout the day. They even host cooking classes where guests can learn from industry-leading pastry chefs. GalleryPastryShop.com

ROAD TRIP (CONTINUED)
LUNCH Café Patachou is often described as “a student union for adults.” Each of their five café locations around Indianapolis features dishes prepared from scratch with an emphasis on local and organic ingredients. Their casual fare includes omelets, salads, soups, sandwiches and gluten-free desserts. Founder Martha Hoover is a trailblazing female restaurateur and operates nine additional bars and restaurants around town. CafePatachou.com Shapiro’s Delicatessen has been an Indianapolis staple since 1905 and now offers three locations. The deli is best known for huge portions of Kosher-style classics like their slow cooked corned beef, pastrami and brisket. Homemade matzo ball soup, New York-style bagels and creamy cheesecakes are just some of what can be enjoyed at Shapiro’s. Shapiros.com DINNER Our favorite dining experience of the weekend was Livery, near the city’s Mass Ave art and cultural district. Their Latin-America influenced dishes and drinks are exquisitely presented. Known for tequila and margaritas, they also serve creative specialty drinks. Each menu item offers a unique pairing of ingredients that work together deliciously, such as a cauliflower appetizer served with avocado salsa. Some of our recommendations include the empanadas, lamb tamale and paella served with a spicy chorizo fried rice. We finished our meal with churros drizzled with caramel and left wishing we had room for more. Livery-Restaurant.com If you’re a foodie who’s ready to put your faith fully in the hands of the chef, Beholder is a splurge worth exploring. Chef Jonathan Brooks, who also founded Milktooth, and Sommelier Josh Mazanowski are partners in this high-end establishment that Wine Enthusiast named one of the top 100 wine restaurants in both 2018 and 2019. The menu changes daily and offers both three and six artfully presented tasting courses with optional wine pairing. BeholderIndy.com

HAPPY HOUR A casual spot to grab a post-dinner beverage is 1718 The Bates-Hendricks House Bar. Cocktails are their specialty and they’ve become known for their selection of bourbon. 1718HB.com If beer is your beverage of choice, Sun King Brewery offers a wide range of choices from Pachanga, a Mexican-style lager, to Orange Vanilla Sunlight Cream Ale. SunKingBrewing.com ART AND CULTURE Between meals, there are abundant art and cultural opportunities to enjoy, many outdoors and free of charge. “The Cultural Trail is an 8-mile art walk that connects all of Indy’s cultural districts and several historic neighborhoods,” explains Nate. “It breathed new life into the neighborhoods and has already changed downtown for the better.” One of the most popular stops along the trail is White River State Park. This 250-acre urban park has outdoor sculptures, open green space and the Indiana Central Canal, which can be enjoyed via pedal boat or on a threemile pedestrian walking path. Various concerts and festivals are held in the park, including the Vintage Indiana Wine Fest, coming on October 17. Seven museums and attractions are in the park, including the NCAA Headquarters & Hall of Champions, Indianapolis Zoo and The Indiana State Museum. The Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art houses exhibits that inspire an appreciation and understanding of the art, history and cultures of these indigenous people. A noteworthy exhibit features the work of Michael Naranjo, a blind artist who creates stunning bronze sculptures. Disposable gloves are provided to encourage visitors to experience the “Please Touch!” exhibit with their hands. On the north side of the city is Newfields, a campus

The Indianapolis Museum of Art is best known as the home of the original Robert Indiana LOVE sculpture, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Four floors showcase everything from ancient works to art from Africa, Asia, Europe and America. A new fourth floor modern art exhibit will open in 2021. Check their website for current exhibitions and events. DiscoverNewfields.org Just outside the museum are 52 acres of peaceful gardens to explore. Tour the historic Lilly House and conservatory, then enjoy a local brew in the beer garden.

ROAD TRIP (CONTINUED)
Across the river is the Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park. Birdwatching and relaxation are encouraged with 100 acres of woodlands, wetlands and meadows to explore. Modern sculptures are interspersed, including Funky Bones, the whimsical group of 20 fiberglass “bone” benches upon which visitors can walk or jump. If you’re concerned about the safety of traveling during a pandemic, rest assured that Indianapolis is taking precautions. “We’ve been preparing for reopening for months now and we’ve rolled out the most effective and safe measures possible,” says Nate. If you’re ready to hit the road this fall for a food and art-filled weekend, check out Indianapolis. “We’re ready to welcome visitors back safely and we have a lot to offer,” shares Nate.

A World of Sweet Possibility
LE MACARON CREATES A DELIGHTFUL COFFEE BREAK AT LIBERTY CENTER
WHETHER YOUR FAVORITE DESSERT IS FROZEN, BAKED OR INTRICATELY DECORATED, THAT FIRST BITE IS EXQUISITE. Whatever was on your mind can take a break, making room for a little sweetness. Marina Amaral has been a home dessert chef and world traveler her whole life: after growing up in Brazil, she has lived in Venezuela, Switzerland, Germany, and now, the West Chester/Liberty area. “I learned a lot about people around the world and what kinds of desserts they like,” says Marina Amaral, owner of Le Macaron at Liberty Center. “This helped me a lot! I understand the customers better. I also speak Spanish and understand some French, which helps as well.” When she looked to start a business in 2018, Marina found a perfect blend of her passions for living around the world and for baked treats. The Le Macaron name is part of a small French-owned franchise which allowed her to create a wonderful shop for desserts and craft coffee alongside the main attraction: macarons. “I started the process with this franchise in January, 2018,” says Marina. “In June, I found Liberty Center, which has great foot traffic. It’s perfect.” Macarons are a unique delicacy that may appear simple but require a lot of finesse to create: the ingredients of almond flour, egg whites and sugar are combined to create the shells of a sandwich, with flavorings and color added in to create the many different types, from Lavender White Chocolate to Lemon Cream. The filling is flavored buttercream, delicate chocolate or jam. “The idea is that it’s an adventure every time you try one,” says Marina. “First, a crunch in the shell, then the moisture inside, then the melt-in-your-mouth sensation. Our logo says ‘a mouthful of heaven,’ for a reason.” At only 80 calories per macaron, these sweets are guilt-free, in addition to being made with gluten-free ingredients. Three flavors are also dairy-free—Strawberry Key Lime, Passion Mango and Raspberry— making a visit to Le Macaron accessible for all dessert lovers. Beyond macarons, the shop has chef-created gelato, a frozen treat different from the average ice cream. 28

HOT SPOT (CONTINUED)
“Ice cream is made using cream, while gelato is created using milk, so it’s not as heavy,” says Marina. “The flavors we have are made by a French chef, so we have slightly different flavors: macaron gelato, an almond based flavor with pieces of macaron, and we have violet flower and pistachio. It’s a piece of Europe here.” Marina enjoys the aspect of the business that lets her work with a close friend as well as a variety of other workers, who receive ongoing training to continue to provide a great customer service experience. “It’s great to work with people you really trust,” she says. As a former teacher, she trains her workers about the products the shop offers and much more. “I was an educator working with learning disabilities, so this is another way to use what I learned, to teach them how to be the best they can be,” she says. “We are always innovating here, with new training every month on how to be successful in the shop and beyond.” After nearly two years in business, she continues to find new joys within the coffee bar, pastry case and trays of macarons. “I love the new craft iced lattes. It’s iced coffee, plus gelato and syrup. For macarons, I love the Orange Grand Marnier macaron with the chocolate inside,” says Marina with a twinkle in her eye. “Every day, you want to try something different: eclair, napoleon or something else. I thought I’d be tired of desserts after six months, but there’s always something new!” Macarons have become popular as a compact, beautiful gift, with boxes that house a single macaron for a party favor all the way up to ornate towers of macarons that make excellent party or wedding centerpieces that turn into delightful desserts at the end of the meal. If you’re looking for a high-quality gift, Le Macaron is happy to help—just keep in mind that macarons are best fresh, so pick them up less than three days before they’ll be consumed. Whether you work with Le Macaron to craft great corporate business gifts for the winter holidays or use it as a perfect place to drink a latte and nibble on a pastry, this shop is a great way to transport yourself to France and beyond.

OCTOBER IS MY FAVORITE MONTH. This October, I celebrate 25 years of marriage with my sweetie. Five states, three kids and one dog later, I am delighted to call West Chester home and thrilled to be returning to the editor role at West Chester + Liberty Lifestyle. It's home-

coming season, after all. Here are a few more of my favorites, the comforts of home that bring me joy.
01 Fresh flowers—Wildflower bouquets brighten up my world. 02 Double chocolate chip ice cream— There’s no such thing as too much chocolate. 03 Marimekko—I am drawn to the bright and bold prints of this Finnish designer. 04 Soul tunes—My playlist includes 60’s soul classics and my current fave band, dynamic duo Johnnyswim. 05 Chai tea—Hot, iced or frozen, chai tea is my caffeine of choice. 06 Purple pens—Red pens give writers bad flashbacks; purple is a kinder color for edits.
